[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-16 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
two things:

1. i'm left handed and driving the mouse with the right hand, i think
lots of left-handed people do that

2. this will make wine applications look even more out of place, also
chrome has the problem. for wine i think it's more or less unfixable.
but i understand that wine is not really a high priority for canonical.

[Bug 89656] [apport] vino-server crashed with SIGSEGV in rfbAuthCleanupClient()

2007-03-05 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vino

here is what i think happened; i was testing connection from a remote (local
computer) through VNC. at one point, i was connected through the remote
computer, and i asked to disconnect it through the VNC applet icon in the GNOME
menu. I think that that point i asked twice. two windows asking for
confirmation to disconnect the remote computer appeared, i closed one by saying
disconnect.
later, i tried to connect again from that same remote host. i have VNC set up
so that it asks for confirmation when someone tries to connect. so the window
XX tried to connect through VNC, do you want to allow or refuse?.
I wanted to click allow but the window was not responding. at that point i
noticed the old window about disconnecting the remote computer in the previous
session. i think i tried to close that old window with cancel, and i think
that it's at that point that vino crashed.

[Bug 34805] Re: ALT GR key don't work.

2007-03-04 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
well, same timing. i also just tested it with vino 2.17.92-0ubuntu1, and
i confirm: it still doesn't work.

i'm wondering if the VNC clients we're using also support that. I'm
using ultraVNC. I'm saying that because both computers have slovenian
keyboards, and that also the slovenian specific keys čšž don't work
through that VNC connection, which is another problem than alt-GR. Maybe
those windows VNC clients always assume the keyboard is en-US or
something like that?

well actually it supports the basic keys in the right layout for sure;
if i type qwertz through VNC, qwertz is displayed, not qwerty or
something like that. it's still strange that čšž doesn't go through.

i'm using edgy here, and alt-gr from windows client to ubuntu definitely
doesn't work. it's really bad, because on my slovenian keyboard, it
means i can't type:

[]{}@

which means programming using vnc from a windows computer is a complete
nightmare.

[Bug 71928] does not offer to copy CD when right click on drive

2006-11-15 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
Public bug reported:

I'm pretty sure that in dapper, nautilus 2.14, when right-clicking on a
CD drive, I was offered to copy CD, which I could use to get an ISO
image of the CD/DVD. I upgraded my computer to edgy, and now in

[Bug 66461] Re: edgy: places-network servers error

2006-10-31 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
i tried ftp://user:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

it works.

the first time I tried it I got the message box:

nautilus cannot display url
please select another viewer and try again

but it never appeared again (also tried to reboot, now it just works).
so i guess it was nautilus being a bit tired, and the conclusion is that
it works.

[Bug 66461] Re: edgy: places-network servers error

2006-10-30 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
I don't think this patch will fix my problem of not being able to open my FTP
servers with passwords from the gnome-panel...
All that was fixed is another (related) problem of unclear error message on
gnome-open ftp-site-with-password.

When you upload packages to edgy which should fix this i can 100% say
that the bug that I reported is not fixed. But right now i really can't
see how it could be fixed...

to restate my problem:
in dapper, places-name of my FTP server, GNOME asks my keyring password,
nautilus opens my FTP server with password.

in edgy, exact same settings (dist-upgrade), places-name of my FTP
server, error message.

I don't think upstream released a fix to this bug :-/

ah, maybe we were talking about different things.

looking more careful at this page, we are talking both about a small
libgnome bug, that error message, for which a fix was released, and also
of the bug i'm getting, which would be on gnome-vfs2, and still not
fixed.

in that case, sorry for the misunderstanding.

2006-10-26 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
probably you already know that, but i'm just saying just in case.

it's not good enough to just give another error message: gnome-open
shouldn't fail, it should display the message box asking the username
password. and from places where i actually entered by username and
password, it should work. so your patch is not fixing the problem.

as i said, you almost certainly already know that, i just wanted to say
it.

[Bug 66461] Re: edgy: places-network servers error

2006-10-18 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
OK, I ran all the commands.

The results are puzzling, to me at least...

---
gnomevfs-info ftp://ftp.gnome.org
You must log in to access ftp.gnome.org
Login anonymously?
 1 Yes
 2 No
1
Name : /
Type : Directory
MIME type : x-directory/normal
Default app : nautilus-folder-handler.desktop

gnome-open ftp://ftp.gnome.org works fine, displays the dialog asking login
anonymous or not

gnomevfs-info with my FTP server with authentication returns:
Name : /
Type : Directory
MIME type : x-directory/normal
Default app : nautilus-folder-handler.desktop

gnome-open on that ftp fails instantly without asking anything. i can give you
the address, there's no password even asked:
gnome-open ftp://ftp.domenca.com

i also tried
gnome-open ftp://[EMAIL PROTECTED]

same thing. both fail with Error showing url: Unknown error code: 30

I know another FTP server which requires password. this one also fails error
code 30:
gnome-open ftp://ftp.takedomain.net

so it seems that it's important that the server requires a password.
I'm not sure if I was right before when I thought that error 30 would be
GNOME_VFS_ERROR_LOGIN_FAILED. Maybe I was right.

anyway, I'm more and more puzzled...

[Bug 66461] edgy: places-network servers error

2006-10-16 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
Public bug reported:

I upgraded my computer from dapper. In dapper that feature worked fine.
I have one FTP (with login) server registered on my places-network servers.

If I click on it, I get an error message box.

it's written:

-
Could not open location 'ftp://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/FOLDER'

There is no default action associated with this location.
-

It's not that my servers file is not properly written or anything. because if I
go in nautilus in the Network folder manually, then click on the same FTP
server, all works perfectly!
so the problem seems to be with the gnome-panel.

when doing FTP in nautilus with that server, it didn't go very well too.

clicking retry worked.

[Bug 63297] Re: ssindex crashes

2006-10-11 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
another thing: in the upstream bug report, the developer:

1. explained that a whole class of such problems were fixed in 1.7.1, so
hopefully all the crashes found in this bug were fixed

2. gives a small (15 lines or so) patch to fix the issue in 1.7.0 if it
was too late now to move ubuntu to 1.7.1

so i think now ubuntu should either go to 1.7.1, or if the freeze is too
deep and it's too late, the small patch suggested and adopted by
upstream which fixes the issue should be applied to ubuntu's gnumeric
package.

[Bug 63297] Re: ssindex crashes

2006-10-11 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
OK, if we can't get 1.7.1 then it would be great to apply that small
patch suggested by the developer.

1. the crash will be experienced by anybody having installed gnumeric and
having .csv on his hard disk which gnumeric does not like
2. the patch is very small
3. the patch is approved by upstream
4. it's easy to check whether the patch does fix the crash: we have in this
bugreport all the files which triggered crashes so far. run the files through
1.7.0 with the patch and check that they indeed don't crash gnumeric

The problem is that apport makes this problem very visible: you are
working normally on your computer, and suddendly you get a window that
ssindex, a program you never heard of, crashed. I'm sure many people
will think VIRUS!!!, plus I don't know how this affects beagle
indexing.

[Bug 56886] Re: Very small throbber

2006-09-24 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
it really doesn't look very good, and there is a patch in the GNOME bug report
which is very simple... (ask for an icon of size 32 and not of size 0).
I guess an alternative fix would be to remove the low-resolution throbber icons
from the icon theme.

it would be really nice if that could be fixed for edgy. it's this kind
of lack of polish that gives a bad initial impression to many users.
let's call it anti-apple.

it's a real problem because in edgy AFAIK all the GTK themes are cairo-

problem).

in dapper you can choose LegacyHuman and you're OK. in edgy... you'd have to

[Bug 48198] drivemount: regression: audio CDs no longer displayed

2006-06-03 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
Public bug reported:

since dapper, drivemount no longer displays in the list of drives CD
drives containing audio CDs.
I think it's because it has been decided to hide drives that the user cannot
mount.

In the case of audio CDs, it's a regression IMO, because:

1. you can no longer click the drive and select Play CD, option which was
introduced in 2.12, so beginner users will have as only solution to
eject/reintroduce the CD to get it to play if they don't know which program is
used to play audio CDs.

2. you can no longer eject the CD using the drivemount applet. you must use the
button on the CD drive. imagine explaining to a beginner that he must use the
drivemount applet to eject CDs... unless if it's an audioCD. then he must use
the button on the drive. it's confusing.

I think the new behaviour should be changed: don't display drives that can't be
mounted, unless they are audioCDs. Always display audioCDs (like in breezy).

I first reported this bug in GNOME bugzilla but it seems it's ubuntu
specific so I report it here.

well it's been established that it only happens to ati users for sure. i
mean, many people already commented on that, and they all use ATI cards.

so either it's a ATI driver bug or ubuntulooks bug that only appears

bad image of linux ubuntu that such a trivial thing causes a crash in my
opinion.
it was not so bad in breezy because it was hard to make a slideshow in EOG (you
had to open directory), now that it's much easier i think many people will
notice that bug. i mean, who doesn't have a digital camera nowadays?? everybody
wants to see slideshow of their pictures.

that means once more the best way to have slideshows will be gthumb, and
for that you must explain to people that they must learn another way of
browsing their folders, which is annoying, esp. for beginners.

but it's your call... i won't comment on this bug anymore unless
upstream reacts...

[Bug 44344] when shutting down, text console is shown and usplash appears only later

2006-05-12 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
Public bug reported:

since gnome-session has changed to using gnome-power-manager instead of
gdm to log out (at least it seems to me that's when the change occured),
when shutting down the computer, instead of switching to usplash for the
shutdown, the display switches to one tty (text mode, letting you enter
login and password to login, with a blinking cursor, as if you hit
ctrl-alt-f1), and only later switches to usplash (when the usplash
progress bar is quite far) before shutdown.

before that change, when shutting down, the display was switching
straight to usplash, for a much smoother experience.

[Bug 43322] Re: EOG crashes when stopping slideshow

2006-05-08 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
I posted a patch that should fix the issue on the upstream bug at:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=64955action=view

explanation for the patch:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=320206#c13

More explanations:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=320206#c8
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=320206#c15

If upstream won't react on time for dapper, you could maybe consider including
it in dapper anyway. Your call obviously...

[Bug 43654] in bookmarks menu, x-nautilus-desktop instead of Desktop

2006-05-08 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
Public bug reported:

Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Binary package hint: nautilus

in my dapper computer upgraded from breezy, in nautilus, in the Bookmarks
menu there is an entry named x-nautilus-desktop instead of Desktop.
If I click on it, it does bring me to the desktop, but the icon and the text is
wrong. I'll attach a picture.

[Bug 43322] EOG crashes when stopping slideshow

2006-05-07 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
Public bug reported:

Affects: eog (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
there is a very big bug in EOG 2.14.1 present in dapper: start a slideshow,
then cancel it using ESCAPE. you'll likely trigger a crash.
according to the upstream bug report it's mostly when you cancel when a new
image just appeared in the slideshow. but for me it's all the time.

i think the bug is very critical. dapper doesn't look good at all if the image
viewer crashes just by doing a slideshow. for now upstream didn't fix it yet.
this is a request that ubuntu developers consider distributing the fix in
dapper as soon as it's applied in CVS (assuming it will be applied on time),
even if EOG developers don't make a release, and even if it's quite late in
dapper schedule.

i think it's a very serious bug like the nautilus crash on right click
make archive was in breezy, that required to upload the fix in breezy-
updates since so many people where hitting it.

upstream bug:

2006-05-06 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
in
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/tango-icon-theme/+bug/42765
(equivalent bug for tango)

we can see that a bug was filled on freedesktop BTS, for the icons to be
integrated in tango upstream:

[Bug 42765] Re: icons for EOG

2006-05-04 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
i don't have a freedesktop bugzilla account but you should put in that
bug where you found the icons. they must be sure about copyright before
including them. if they don't know where the icons are coming from, who
is the copyright holder and what is the license, they will certainly
refuse to include them.

[Bug 17970] Re: gtk-update-icon-cache not run

2006-04-03 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
i agree with some that comment that the cache specification is broken.
there is an alternative to patching the 300+ packages: patch the cache to:
1. retry on the filesystem if the icon wasn't found in the cache (as sebastien
bacher suggested on planet gnome)
2. check recursively the mtime to decide whether the cache is outdated

so that's the alternative for ubuntu debian: patch the cache instead of
disabling it, even if upstream disagrees. 1 package to change instead of 300+
and of course rebuild applications to use the cache, which would be needed
anyway.
of course that risks some bad mood bad comments from upstream...

2006-03-27 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
Public bug report changed:

the problem is that tango provides SVG (scalable) versions of the icons while
the ubuntu icons don't offer SVG versions.
i also think this should be fixed.

[Bug 36833] emblem for symbolic link huge

2006-03-27 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/36833

Affects: ubuntu-artwork (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
with the new ubuntu icon theme in dapper (and with tango, and actually this
problem is inherited from tango), the emblem for symbolic links is huge.
it's probably also the case with emblems for read-only etc.

i'll attach a screenshot.

the problem is that
/usr/share/icons/Tango/scalable/emblems
probably shouldn't exist.
I don't know if the ubuntu icon theme can fix that easily without changing
Tango since it inherits from Tango.

it's very annoying, see screenshot. in the case of the screenshot,
viewing icons is completely impossible: they are hidden by the emblems..

Public bug reported:

Affects: ubuntulooks (Ubuntu)

Description:
Now that Tango offers SVG (scalable) icons in their iconset, it would be
great if the new human theme could also offer SVG versions of the icons
so that they scale well. for instance the new folder icon does not look
well, because it's only provided as a bitmap, not as SVG.
