[Bug 1915096] Re: clock/calendar displays outdated information

2021-04-11 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
I have experienced a bug and I have adequately described its appearance.
If the responder cannot recreate that bug then that does **not** mean that it
is not a bug.
Letting this bug expire testifies of an arrogant mindset.

[Bug 1915468] [NEW] calendar should have a button in its top bar

2021-02-11 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

Having a "synchronize' entry in a dropdown list is VERY userUNfriendly.

I cannot imagine the mindset that deems it okay.

The button should always be visible, so put it on the top
bar of the application.

[Bug 1915233] [NEW] Document Viewer has no underlines on Alt-Spacebar menu

2021-02-09 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

Alt-Spacebar brings up a menu to minimize-maximize-move-etc the window.

That menu does not have letters underlined so the user cannot use the
keyboard.

There are people in the world that prefer not to use the mouse for
reason of, for example, suffering from, or trying to prevent getting,
repetitive strain injury (RSI).

[Bug 1912873] [NEW] disks incorrectly reports smart attribute 231 as "temperature"

2021-01-22 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

SMART attribute 231 of the KINGSTON SA400S37480G (SBFKK1B3) is defined
as "SSD_Life_Left" (see
https://media.kingston.com/support/downloads/MKP_521_Phison_SMART_attribute.pdf).

The drive is correctly specified in the smartmontools, smartctl/smartd
database (see attached).

disks (gnome-disk-utility 3.36.1 = UDisks 2.8.4 (built against 2.8.4))
reports attribute 231 as "temperature".

Possibly relevant is that "smartctl -t short" reports an error (see
attached)

@humphrey.vanpolanenpetel That is four year old software. Please first
test this with a recent GNOME version (3.36) before reporting software

I thought Xenial, i.e. 16.04, is still being maintained -- perhaps not
so?

Ubuntu LTS 16.04.6

118K files in trash
gvfs-trash consumes both CPUs and 100% of available memory

"empty trash" goes into prepare phase, but nothing appears to happen,
presumably because of the large number of files, so I closed the window
by clicking the

rm -rf ~/.local/share/Trash/*

nautilus window on trash:/// goes dark for a long time, but eventually
comes back to show Trash to be empty

opening the Trash icon (on the on the launch bar) shows it to be empty
and both and buttons are greyed out, but the Trash
icon still shows 'filled'

2020-07-02 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
I wouldn't know whether it a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gsmartcontrol/+bug/1873546,
because it concerns two different utilities. Sure, they could both be
using the same underlying resource which could be the one at fault, but
I do not have sufficient knowledge about these matters, though on the
basis of my reading on forums I suspect hddtemp as I mentioned in the
description, but that is only my opinion.

The release date of the Kingston SA400S37 ssd was Q1 2017.
Therefore, the upstream decision from Debian maintainer, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/smartmontools/+bug/1858121
is within the bounds of the hardware maintenance phase.
Accordingly, update-smart-drivedb should be reinstated, backported from 18.04.

[Bug 992430] Re: ubuntu update to 12.04 LTS wipes ~/.local data

2018-11-18 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Sorry, Paul, but I have lost my faith in the idea of volunteer support
without strict oversight (which I gather is how things are working
here). There have been too many problem that I felt were important that
were graded low importance or even placed on the wishlist. I get the
strong impression that this is the consequence of essentially a CLI
mindset while the rest of the world is GUI. I plan to one day write to
Canonical about this, but I have other priorities. Meanwhile I am happy
to let this one expire.

I am happy to file bugs and even go the extra mile, but you guys are not
making it any easier. As it is, gitlab appears not to be under the
UbuntuOne umbrella and their registration confirmation emails do not get
to my inbox. I am sorry, but I give up.

[Bug 1738593] [NEW] disks should synchronize with fstab

2017-12-16 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

When gnome-disk-utility formats a disk it assigns a new UUID.
UUID is the preferred way to identify disks in fstab.
Problem is that gnome-disk-utility does *not* update fstab.
As a consequence the system will not boot & newbies will be stumped. (I was
for two days).
Therefore gnome-disk-utility must check fstab and if appropriate
not assign a new UID
or
update fstab
or
alert the user to update fstab.

And, yes, this is a bug, albeit a bug in the design, but still a bug.

Then how do I phrase the comment that I was requested to move the bug

[Bug 1524610] [NEW] search should prioritize name field

2015-12-09 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

The width of columns in Nautilus appears to be averaged across all columns such
that all columns display as much as possible.
The consequence of this is that long names in the location-column will cause
the name in the name-column to be truncated.
The problem with this is that files with long names cannot readily be
identified, because the differentiating part of the name is truncated as with,
for instance, suffixes denoting version numbers.

[Bug 1520113] Re: disks should not offer x-gvfs-show when Bug #1012081 is still unresolved

2015-11-27 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
please read up

 bug #1012081 =
Applications in the default desktop - specifically gnome-disk-utility - depend
on behaviour only introduced in util-linux 2.21+. Specifically if you select
"Show in user interface" in mount options, it adds the mount option
"x-gvfs-show" to the mount options in /etc/fstab. Mounting of this mount point
then fails because the option is unrecognised.

in particular, comment #51 =
[...] The fstab entries done by the gnome-disk-utility v 3.10.0 which comes
with 14.04.2 are still causing problems at boot.
After some try and error I found that the entry in fstab needs to be
"...comment=x-gvfs-show..." as opposed to "...x-gvfs-show..." entered by the
gnome-disk-utility when "Show in user interface" is checked.

[Bug 1505105] [NEW] misleading error message on resize

2015-10-12 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

 opens "resize images" box
seeing the "scale" option pre-filled with 50 I knee-jerk-click
I get the error message "'Screenshot from 2015-10-12 18:08:49.png' cannot be
resized. Check whether you have permission to write to this folder."
I am confused, investigate and *finally* realize that I should have clicked the

the bug is that the error message should have been appropriate to the

[Bug 1097963] [NEW] typing+cursor movement does not obey sort order

2013-01-09 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

Expected behavoir:
Directories and files are sorted alphabetically.
Typing a 't' will place the highlight at the first occurrence of a directory or
file that starts with a 't'.
Moving the cursor then down typically moves the highlight to the next such
occurrence if that exists.

Observed behavior:
Given the following list of directories (as they appear on my system)
..
System
Texts
_Thesis
Topics
Ugrad
..
Typing a 't' correctly places the highlight on Texts, but moving the cursor
down incorrectly places the highlight on Topics instead of the next entry
_Thesis.

No worries.

Do I now understand correctly that I should report all gedit bugs
upstream first and then report here afterwards?

[Bug 992430] Re: ubuntu update to 12.04 LTS wipes ~/.local data

Well, whatever is the case, the dirs+content dispappeared and that
should not have happened. IMO that points to the existence of a bug
somewhere. Now I have reported the bug and if anybody wants more
information I will be happy to oblige.

[Bug 992430] [NEW] ubuntu update to 12.04 LTS wipes ~/.local data

2012-05-01 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

The system invited me to update to the new release 12.04 LTS

~/.local/share/mime/packages
These directories contain information for the markup of user-defined languages

[Bug 992430] Re: ubuntu update to 12.04 LTS wipes ~/.local data

2012-05-01 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
I originally installed 11.10 which then upgraded itself to whatever.
The data in those dirs was indeed custom data - as required by gedit - see:
http://live.gnome.org/Gedit/NewLanguage
Fortunately, I could recover the missing files from elsewhere.

[Bug 992430] Re: ubuntu update to 12.04 LTS wipes ~/.local data

2012-05-01 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
I searched the disk and the files were not found (I did include hidden
and system files), ergo the dirs + content were wiped, ergo 'they' (of
gedit) did not migrate those datas, ergo the upgrader must have been at
fault.
