If you use OpenDNS for instance, as I do, you will not be reidrected to Google, and many providers use this kind of DNS redirection. If you want to make a Google search for the expression you inserted, you have to select the corresponding Smart Bookmark in the dropdown list. That makes me think anyway, that this is not as obvious as it should, and that there should be an easier way to access Web Search (e.g. ship with a default Search the Web smart bookmark on the toolbar, as some distribution already does, and solve bug #337297).
