[Bug 2043395] Re: Updating to Ubuntu 23.10 (mantic) fails as the gnome-remote-desktop & gnome-shell packages are broken

2023-12-17 Thread Geary Shull Jr
I'm having this issue as well. Here are my logs:
https://pastebin.com/8ygwMKgY";>main.log
https://pastebin.com/1CqpXAPe";>apt.log

I attempted to reinstall both packages reported in the log and have had
no success. I am beginning to believe that the packages are fine. I'll
remove the remote-desktop and see if that solves the issue

Oddly enough, the issue remains exactly the same, even with the remote-
desktop removed outright. Sorry, I'm out of ideas at this point beyond a
full reinstall.

[Bug 1898958] [NEW] Error importing google caldendar from Online Accounts

2020-10-07 Thread Robert A. Schaefer Jr.
Public bug reported:

When I upgraded to 20.10 beta evolution wouldn't connect to the google
calendars of any of the accounts that I setup in the settings online
accounts. I was able to add them through the evolution accounts mail
accounts options and that worked. I tried removing the accounts in the
main accounts settings for ubuntu and putting them back again. That
didn't correct the problem.

Crashed again overnight. No response from mouse, keyboard, or power
button. Hard rebooted. Dont see any new error links. I have reinstalled

Re: [Bug 1880728] Re: [amdgpu] Gnome Shell freeze

2020-06-17 Thread David Landis Jr
Here are a couple other links from errors.ubuntu.com today. There were
three from temviewer as well, but i did not list those here.

https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/5f1c4638-b0a5-11ea-af49-fa163e983629
https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/69a6aac2-b0a4-11ea-9cf2-fa163e102db1
https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/3fa61456-b0a4-11ea-a652-fa163e6cac46
https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/3a454040-b0a4-11ea-9cf2-fa163e102db1

I actually just uninstalled teamviewer to see if that resolves anything. I
am going to be using a different program called anydesk for right now.

Crashed again overnight. Went to wake the screen (the computer doesnt
sleep, just turns off the screen) and got no response from the mouse or
keyboard. When i pressed the power buttonit woke the screen, but it was
just a black screen with the mouse cursor displayed, but not able to be
moved. There is a new error on errors.ubuntu.com, but it was in the
afternoon and i used it in the evening just fine. Here is the link:
https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/1abba6b4-b09b-11ea-aba8-fa163ee63de6

i also am attaching another prevboot file that i ran after it powered up
this morning.

I have tried CTRL+Q. Still does not shut down. The only way is to kill the
process.

[Bug 408903]

> Current kernels have KEY_MICMUTE==248, i. e. X.org should be
> perfectly able to recognize this. Apparently this was done in
> 2011 already.

248 is the first linux kernel value which X cannot handle.

The mapping is +8, so 248 ⟹ 256, which does not fix in 8 bits.

(The first 8 are reserved – from way back – for the modifiers.)

2013-09-09 Thread JR
I forgot to mention that I'm using qtcurve as I had other crashes when
using the gtk oxygen theme.

it seems this issue can be worked around by adding
gtk-enable-animations=0

to $HOME/.grkrc-2.0

[Bug 321720]

2013-07-10 Thread James H. Cloos Jr.
Most of the information I have about xfa has come from the itext list.

An example of the type of info posted there:

http://support.itextpdf.com/node/134

If there is new info since 2011/12 I’d be interested to know.

[Bug 321720]

2013-07-10 Thread James H. Cloos Jr.
It looks like the xfa situation isn’t as dire as I’d been led to
understand.

OTOH, I’m not entirely certain that the licence text in the preface of
the pdf referenced in comment #9 is GPL-compatible. Or even DFSG-
compatible.

In any case (unless Albert things otherwise), it probably should not be
implemented as part of poppler. I suspect an xfa-specific library would
be better.

Poppler, of course, can help by assisting the extraction of the xml.

It is a huge (and likely non-Free) standard, will require web-browser-
like implementation, and xfa is not limited to pdf encapsulation.

It might work better as an extension to webkit or gecko.

For starters www.xfa.org does not exist. And xfa.org does not have an A

[Bug 1195973] Re: FGLRX Fully Installed but system still uses VESA

2013-06-29 Thread Bien Baldonado Jr.
This is what appears after I execute the fglrxinfo command:

display: :0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 7640G
OpenGL version string: 4.2.11903 Compatibility Profile Context

Yes, I understand that that's not always the case. But how come whenever
I monitor the system performance when I play videos, it is quite
noticeable that the video utilizes a large amount of resource from the
CPU, when in fact it should use hardware acceleration from the video
hardware, not to mention the bumpiness on the window environment
whenever the CPU usage approaches 100%?

[Bug 1195973] [NEW] FGLRX Fully Installed but system still uses VESA

2013-06-29 Thread Bien Baldonado Jr.
Public bug reported:

So I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my HP ProBook 4445s. I applied all
updates on the update manager then installed the FGLRX through
Additional Drivers application.

I then checked the system information if it reports the correct video
driver, since issues with FGLRX were apparent on releases before 12.04
(11.04 and 11.10) on my experience. I was surprised that the problem is
still there.

Thinking that it might just be an installation problem, before I
reformatted my notebook computer again, I tried to run a few
applications through WINE. Surprisingly everything works well, with the
hardware acceleration and all. As I've read on a few reports,
applications use the hardware acceleration quite well. But as for the
desktop experience and videos, the system only uses VESA.

After reformat and installation and updates and driver installation, system
information still reports VESA.

[Bug 321720]

2013-06-26 Thread James H. Cloos Jr.
Adobe would have to document XFA forms before this even could be
addressed.

The most up to date info I could find on that front is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XFA#Standardization

As long as Adobe keeps XFA forms proprietary they are not potable and
livecycle and acroread are the only way to deal with them.

Speaking only for myself, I’d go so far as to say that private,
unpublished extensions to the PDF format make the file not PDF.

Support for ECMA-Script, on the other hand, is merely a matter of
coding.

Until poppler or evince add it, you might want to try compiling mupdf
master

  (git clone git://git.ghostscript.com/mupdf.git)

with -DV8_PRESENT=1. You’ll need to install v8 first. Your
distribution might pacakge it, else look at http://code.google.com/p/v8.

[Bug 537970]

2012-06-03 Thread James H. Cloos Jr.
The renderings I get from evince (master, with poppler master and
cairo master), ghostscript (9.05 and master) and mupdf (master) all
match the png you posted as attachment #62423.

I looked at the document after running it though:

  :; mupdfclean -d -a Abschlussarbeit.pdf Abschlussarbeit.pdfc

to make it readable. The only odd thing I found was that the ink was
set (via 0 g 0 G) multiple times in a row. That is redunant – even
redundantly redundant ☺ – but shouldn’t cause any harm.

Oddly, gs 9.05’s psdrgb device was unable to render the file; every
other output device I tried with gs 9.05 worked fine.

In any case, poppler master with cairo master renders correctly.

[Bug 974784] Re: accessibility virtual keyboard showing up after screen lock resume

2012-04-25 Thread Neliton Pereira Jr
I found the cause of the annoyance. For some reason, the virtual
keyboard (Onboard) is automatically set, probably by gnome-accesibility,
to show up when the screen is locked. Launching Onboard Settings and
unchecking "Show Onboard when unlocking the screen" obviously stops this
behavior.

[Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap

2011-10-03 Thread Jim (JR) Harris
Folks, here is my dos centavos, dva kopekie, two cents, or whatever. . .
.

Note: Distro used is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

1. Allowing physical icons to overlap is just plain messy and un-
professional.

Most of the places I have worked for had a bug-rating from 1-4, 1 being
"hotter-than-hell" and 4 being "yea, alright already!" However, they
also had another bug level - 5 - which was reserved for bugs that -
though maybe not hyper-critical - needed to be addressed ASAP because
they made the company, or product, look silly, stupid, or maintained by
the gorillas at the City Zoo. Things like misspelling the company's
name, placing the Corporate Logo as a mirror-image, or on it's side. Or
a ridiculously obvious GUI/usability issue that looks like the developer
hadn't had his morning coffee yet.

2. My suggestions:
  (a) Create a default size, especially width, (X by Y), that icons must stay
within. If an icon represents something that can have a preview, it should be
scaled to fit the default icon space. If it's considered worth it, an icon
with a preview can explode the preview to a larger, more easily seen size, upon
mouse-over. Of course, the preview would be like a tool-tip/text box that can
cover a portion of the desktop while the mouse is within it.

  (b) Allow a non-selected icon to show, at most, two lines of it's
title with an ellipsis if it was truncated.

  (c) Force the icon label to fit in a space only slightly larger than
the icon size itself (i.e. if the icon matrix is X by Y, than the icon
label would have to fit within a X+2 width space, wrapping as necessary,
and truncated to two lines if not selected.

  (d)  Make the icon spacing a ***user-configurable setting*** (<<===
Hint! Hint!) as it is in Windows.

  (e) Create, adopt, and maintain some kind of "User Interface and
Usability" standard that - once adopted - would become "mandatory" by
consensus - in pretty much the same way that various distributions have
rules for how bugs are created and reported, code modules interact, etc.
etc. etc. These "rules" are necessary so that everyone is on the same
page of the play-book.

Can you imagine what it would be like if every software company out
there could just arbitrarily decide how a CD/DVD should be formatted -
or if an application developer just decided to write whatever the heck
he wanted, willy-nilly all over the hard-drive platters - without regard
to what someone else may have done before?

This wouldn't be "bazaar", it would be - literally - bizarre! Along
with totally un-workable. Even in a bazaar, booths are laid out in an
orderly way, each booth getting only so much space, so that all the
vendors are easily accessible to the customers, without stepping on
each-other's toes.

  (f) Find out whomever coded the desktop so that different icons could
totally overlap and hide each other - hang 'em by their feet, and beat
them senseless with a short bat.

Hmmm. . . . You know? THAT might just be the "User usability feedback"
method we've been looking for! Finally, developers would take us
seriously. . . . (just kidding, but sometimes I am SO tempted.)

Re: "Copying Windows" (slightly off topic)
It appears that there is a small, but vocal, group that believes that
Ubuntu/Debian/Fedora/SuSE/etc. should be as un-like Windows as possible - and
they seem to want to be as much like the Mac as they can without being sued.

And that's their right.

However. I'd also like to see a desktop design started that would try
to create the same look-and-feel as Windows - short of being sued -
because (IMHO) that would greatly help the cross-over user become more
relaxed with Linux. And I'd gladly join whatever maintainer group was
created to develop this.

What say ye?

Jim (JR)

[Bug 777712] [NEW] password dialog doesn't appear when screensaver ends

2011-05-05 Thread JR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

since the upgrade to natty, the password dialog sometimes doesn't appear so I
can't unlock my screen.
in that case I only see a blank screen with the mouse cursor. most of the time
i switched to some text-console and back to the xserver console and was able to
login then. the other times, I hit esc and enter and after a while I the
password dialog appeared.

2011-05-04 Thread JR
I tried a lot of configurations, at least I really left enough space left
and right of the notification area. whatever I did did not make the skype
icon larger that 1 px (restarting skype for every try).

[Bug 776143] [NEW] skype icon isn't visible in panel

2011-05-02 Thread JR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

after switching to natty, I used unity for a few days, but I didn't like
it - so I switched to gnome-classic.

I found that the skype icon isn't visible in the panel. this is quite annoying
if I accidentally minimize skype because it's inavailable then. the interesting
thing is, that this problem does not exist in unity.
I've never had this problem in maverick.

[Bug 734552] Re: Memory leak in Nautilus?

2011-03-18 Thread Jim (JR) Harris

off of my multi-T file server based on the needs of the client-/du-
jour/.

Thanks!

[Bug 734552] Re: Memory leak in Nautilus?

2011-03-18 Thread Jim (JR) Harris
Ref: question #148866 in Launchpad.

I have taken the (admittedly great) liberty of inviting the Kernel team
to weigh-in on this since I am beginning to suspect that this may
actually be a kernel issue.

Summary:
When moving huge files - hundred+gig to terabyte sized file groups - eventually
all available RAM and then all available swap is consumed.

Running huge file/multi-file copies or moves either from Nautilus (drag-
and-drop) or from within a terminal window causes large amounts of
memory to be consumed that is not released when the copy is done.
Subsequent file copies/moves simply add to the memory consumed.

Multiple, simultaneous huge file/group copies simply pour gasoline
[petrol] on a raging fire. This has been a problem for me since at
least Feb. 22 - 2010 - probably before - and has cost me massive crashes
on my file server on multiple occasions.

To duplicate this, you will need massive amounts of storage - in the
multiple T range - and it will be necessary to create folders full of
multi-gig files in the 200G to fractional-T size to move around. (e.g.
If I have two 2T drives, one that has abut 1.5+ T of data on it, and the
other empty, and I run a "cp -a -v /mnt/huge_drive/* /mnt/huge_drive_2"
- and watch the memory allocation either in SysMon, or via top, you will
see memory climb steadily (top shows increasing amounts of buffer used).

If you are really sadistic, you can repeat the command again once it
finishes. My box has 4 gig RAM, and almost 2 gig swap, and doing this a
few times rapidly runs all available memory and swap - and then some! -
right down the tubes.

Please review question #148866 in launchpad:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+question/148866 for
additional, possibly relevant, info on this issue.

[Bug 734552] [NEW] Memory leak in Nautilus?

2011-03-13 Thread Jim (JR) Harris
Public bug reported:

Yesterday when moving relatively huge amounts of data between hard
drives on my system (using the GUI - drag-and-drop) I discovered that
after some time I had consumed all available memory and all available
swap.

System:
Athlon 64 X2 processor on ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe MoBo.
4 gig RAM
1.64 gigs Swap
Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit) "Desktop" edition.

System configuration:
40 gig IDE mounted as root ( / )
4x 1T SATA mounted as md0 - RAID 5 on /mnt/Storage3/Public
1x 2T eSATA mouonted on /mnt/Storage3/Public2
1x 2T eSATA mounted on /mnt/Backup
1x 2T eSATA mounted on /mnt/Backup2

Sustem is being used as a NAS file server running Samba, Apache, and
SWAT

System is fully up-to-date according to Update Manager, with all updates
to whatever it wanted to update, kernel, firefox, and a whole laundry-
list of other things. . . .

Running "gadgets":
1. HW-monitor running libsensors (monitoring CPU temp, both core temps, CPU
and chassis fan speeds, and four voltages - vCore, 3.3v supply, 5v supply and
12v supply)
2. "Weather" gadget.

Desktop configuration:
Running the "Clear" (?) Desktop theme (the "Windows" looking desktop)
I have not tried this using any other desktop configuration.

Possibly relevant?
During a moment of absolutely culpable stupidity, I inadvertantly deleted all
the non-dot folders and files from my home directory. Not knowing any clever
way to rebuild my home directory, I rebooted into the 10.04 live CD (64 bit),
and copied the "Ubuntu" users home directory (the non-dot folders) back to my
home directory, changed permissions and owner to match my user, and rebooted.
Prior to this copy, I verified that none of the hidden (dot) files or folders
had ben touched. I do not believe that this would have any bearing on this,
but I mention it just in case.

Scenerio:

My 4T RAID-5 file store was becoming fuller than I could back-up so I
decided to re-distribute the files by moving certain directories to
Public2 (an additional drive I just added) and replacing them (on
Public) with symlinks.

The magnitude of the move was in the order of almost two teryabytes of
data, (appx. 1.5-or-so T), to distribute the data more evenly between
the two drives.

About half the data was moved using "cp" on the command line. Parts of
the data that had non-standard filenames (containing spaces, etc.)
caused difficulties moving it with cp, so I used the "file browser" as
root (gksu "nautilus. . .") because some of the directories had varying
permissions set.

The porocess was as follows:
1. Drag directory from source to destination.
2. Wait for the copy to successfully finish.
3. Delete the original direcotry.
4. Create a symlink (drag with ctl-shift) from the new location back to the
original location.
This was done because only the Public directory is shared via Samba, and I
wanted to keep it that way.

In some cases, I moved multiple directories at the same time - some
being very small (in the megabytes range) and some were relatively large
(in the multiples of gigabytes range)

This went on for several hours.

Eventually my system virtually ground to a halt. Attempting to launch
any new GUI based process failed with "unable to fork - could not
allocate memory" (or something like that).

I eventually got "top" running in a terminal, and discovered that all
available RAM and all available swap had been consumed.

I was eventually able to get the computer to shutdown, pause to catch
it's breath, and restart.

Performing some directory copies after the re-boot, with "system
monitor" running on the desktop, disclosed the following:

1. Under normal operating condiditons, the system is using appx. 450
(plus or minus) megs of RAM and zero swap.

2. Copying of any amount of data using the command-line within a terminal does
not affect the system memory used.
There are variations in memory used - but the magnitudes are less than about 50
or so megs - it never gets as high as 500 megs used. Once the process is
finished, the memory used returns to very nearly the base value - eventually
dropping back to it after a moment or two.

(Update: This actually depends on the amount of data being moved, and
the amount of terminal activity - I have subsequently seeen it rise into
the 600+megs region, but it always recovers.)

3. If I copy data using the GUI and drag and drop between different
file-manager windows - the used memory rises to about 570 (plus or
minus) megs used, and when the process finishes, it releases only about
20 or 30 megs - if that much. Additional directory moves cause the
memory usage to continue to climb by about 100 megs per copy. Note that
the majority of the copies were multi-gigabyte copies that could take
from 10 minutes to an hour to complete.

Rebooting the machine always restores memory - as we would expect.

Top shows Nautilus consuming increasing amounts of memory every copy.

I looked all over the web checking for a solution, and I even tried the
"apt-get remove

[Bug 725348] [NEW] bug appeared iin download: getdeb.list.bck in sources list

2011-02-25 Thread Vallin Dayton Estes, Jr.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

THat's all. It's just a nuisance in that everytime I upgrade it appears
at the end of the update/grade as an erroneous file and will be ignored.
I got it erased one time on my Dell, but forgot how I did it. It
appeared on Ubuntu 10.10 cd. It's just a pest, that's all.
