[Bug 1969243] Re: gdm 42.0-1ubuntu4 no longer shows Wayland option

I have no session menu at all after upgrading to Jammy today. Is this
the right bug report for it, or should I open a new one? It wasn't
entirely clear to me from the description.

[Bug 995885] Re: Custom keyboard shortcuts do not work if they use the Super key

2012-05-07 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
I am not able to set a custom keyboard shortcut using any combination
with Super. No difficulties otherwise. However, there is an exception; I
can use super+0 to switch to another workspace. That slot is unused on
the launcher. Very strange. In a guest user, I emptied the launcher
completely, and then I could assign super+num to switch between
workspaces, though it didn't seem to work immediately.

Weird bug. I think it'll need some thorough testing.

[Bug 922299] Re: Mouse-wheeling sliders moves them the wrong way.

2012-04-24 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Actually, with the new audio dialog, the Volume slider at the bottom
doesn't react to scrolling at all. Neither does Balance in the right
pane of the Output tab. The slider in the Effects tab also doesn't
react. And not per-application audio.

In summary; none of the sliders react on scrolling anymore.

[Bug 980213] [NEW] In-progress actions dialog is difficult to find in Unity.

2012-04-12 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Public bug reported:

I'm freeing up a disk, copying 500GB to my internal storage. I
discovered that the dialog is difficult to find. The Nautilus Launcher
doesn't show that there are more open Nautilus windows. And in the
Quicklist it's mixed in with bookmarks.

See screenshot.

The Quicklilst entries should be moved to the top, with a separator
before the bookmarks. And the Launcher should get an extra dot to show
it has another open window.

[Bug 929577] [NEW] Appearance Behavior Reveal sensitivity should work opposite

2012-02-09 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Public bug reported:

The reveal sensitivity slider in Appearance Behavior gave me the
impression that it went from slow to fast. After carefully reading the
labels, I eventually figured out that it was opposite. But if the
immediate reaction counts, and I think it should, then it seems to me
that it should work the opposite way, so that left is most sensitive.

I understand why that might sound odd. However, I think most users won't
look at it as sensitivity, but how long it takes to reveal the launcher.
In that case, it makes sense that right will decrease sensitivitym since
you're increasing the time it takes to reveal it.. Of course, this is my
subjective experience. But if I were surprised – I actually thought it
didn't work at first – then I think others might too. At the very least,
this should be tested on innocent users.

It might've been easier to understand if the default was at the middle.
The fact that this wouldn't necessarily be mathematically correct, is
less important, I think.

[Bug 922299] [NEW] Mouse-wheeling Launcher icon size slider moves it the wrong way.

2012-01-26 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Public bug reported:

Steps:

1) Open the control center and open User Interface.
2) Move the mouse pointer to the Launcher icon size slider.
3) Scroll the mouse wheel upwards.
4) Notice that the slider moves to the left.
5) Scroll the mouse wheel downwards

[Bug 918017] [NEW] Sound preferences: mouse scrolling balance only works for right.

I have only experienced this in Nautilus. I've also only heard people

[Bug 886520] [NEW] Controls and menus disappear from time to time.

2011-11-05 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Public bug reported:

On several occasions, I've noticed that the toolbar just disappears in
Nautilus. This started happening very recently, though I've been using
11.10 for more than two months. I've been told by several users that the
same thing happens to menus. Now, there's also been two separate
questions about it on AskUbuntu.com which tells me that the issue is
absolutely real. See http://askubuntu.com/questions/64464/empty-
nautilus-menus and http://askubuntu.com/questions/75733/nautilus-menus-
empty-ubuntu-11-10.

I haven't been able to reproduce it reliably, though it _seems_ to have
something to do with workspace switching, but that's only speculation.

[Bug 886359] [NEW] Missing feature blocks Python apps from being ported to GTK3.

2011-11-04 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Public bug reported:

gi.overrides.Gtk.ListStore has no attribute .reorder. Porting a PyGTK
app to GI GTK3, I found that sorting a TreeView is no longer possible
because GTK.ListStore doesn't provide a .reorder method. Reading the
source code, I found that pygobject indeed doesn't have any override for
.reorder. This is the source code I'm talking about:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/pygobject/tree/gi/overrides/Gtk.py

This is something I can't fix, but since it's likely that many Python
GTK apps use TreeViews, it'd be very nice if a wizard could have a look
at this ASAP.

[Bug 777661] [NEW] gnome-volume-control doesn't /always/ remember sound theme between sessions

2011-05-05 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

In 11.04, if you select a sound theme in gnome-volume-control, it isn't
always remembered between sessions. It is a very strange bug. Sometimes,
it is remembered, other times it isn't and I don't know why. I use
Unity. Steps to reproduce:

1) Click the audio icon indicator.
2) Select preferences.
3) In the first tab, select a sound theme different from the currently selected
one.
4) close the dialog and repeat steps 1-3.
5) Observe that your choice is remembered.
6) log out and back in.
7) repeat steps 1-3: your choice of theme should now be forgotten.
9) if it is remembered, repeat steps 1-8 a few times and observe that the
setting is sometimes forgotten.

[Bug 777661] Re: gnome-volume-control doesn't /always/ remember sound theme between sessions

2011-05-05 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
I think I've found the problem. It seems that the settings aren't
flushed to disk immediately, so if you log out quickly after changing a
setting in gnome-volume-control, then it is forgotten. If you wait a
couple of minutes after selecting sound theme before you log out, then
it is remembered. But this is inconsistent with the rest of the dialog,
because the volume selection in the same tab is remembered regardless.
Steps to reproduce:

1) select a new sound theme in the preferences dialog.
2) log out immediately afterwards and log back in.
3) observe that the new theme is not remembered.
4) in the same tab in the dialog, set a new sound level
5) log out immediately and back in.
6) observe that the volume _is_ stored.
7) perform steps 1-6 again, but this time wait two minutes before logging out.
8) observe that everything works as expected.

[Bug 675918] Re: Login sound plays when 'Play login sound' is un-checked

2011-05-05 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
I can confirm this today, using an updated 11.04. After a clean install,
the dialog will say that login sounds are disabled, even though they are
enabled. If you enable it in the dialog, then disable it, then the login
sound is disabled, and the dialog displays the correct values.

[Bug 9449] Re: the clock calendar should use tooltips on events

2010-09-14 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
In Lucid, birthdays are cropped when the names are too long and also
seem to widen the clock applet, which causes parts of it to go outside
of the screen when the clock applet is in the default location on the
panel.

In Maverick, birthdays doesn't seem to be displayed in the clock applet
at all, which is a bad thing, imho.

In both Lucid and Maverick, appointments and tasks are limited to 21
characters when displayed in bold and 26 in plain. We really do need
tooltips, or some other way of providing a quick preview of a task or
appointment.

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2010-09-09 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
If you're looking for an easy workaround, then I'll present you with
one: use two floating top panels, one for the menubar, and other stuff
you have on the left, and one for clock, session menus, notifiers and
other things you have on the right. As your resolution changes back and
forth, the panels are moved back and forth, but the icons stay where
they are relative to each other.

Problem solved. At least for now.

[Bug 587166] [NEW] No tooltips in clock-applet for tasks and events

2010-05-29 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

The clock applet is very useful to get a quick overview of tasks and
events ahead. However, the space for subject is very limited and so most
get chopped. I find that I often have a list of Monthly meeting w...,
which doesn't really tell me much since I can have many monthly
meetings. The clock applet would be much more useful if we could display

[Bug 321176] Re: [Jaunty] alarm-clock causes screen to freeze

2009-05-01 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
sabby7890, please stop nagging about viruses. This has nothing to do
with viruses at all! A virus is an executable file that copies itself
into another executable. This bug wouldn't in any way permit a user to
write to its executable, nor any other executable, hence it's not a
virus.

Though it is annoying that a bug in one application is able to hang
the entire desktop, it is not in any way a security issue since you have
to install the application and run it manually. You should be aware that
any application you run will have all the same rights as you do,
including deleting all your files, which would be alot more problematic
than this bug. Also, this bug doesn't affect other users.

[Bug 36189] Re: Applets do not scale well with changing resolution

2009-04-27 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
I absolutely agree with Vincenzo. This bug has been bothering me for
years, it seems, but how often have I changed resolution for my screen?
Seldom. So I haven't really made a big deal out of it. Now, however,
with the new netbook, the answer is: 4-5 times every day. That's
something else entirely.

This gnome-panel bug should have the highest priority, cause this makes
GNOME and Ubuntu look really ugly and unfinished. And if you're new to
an operating system and have no experience with it. Would you trust an
OS that couldn't even handle something as basic as a change of
resolutions?

2009-04-27 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
I'll take it to bugzilla. I still think this bug should have a high
priority here though. Just to clarify; you're right, people wouldn't
trust Ubuntu just because the applets stayed at the same places.
However, trust and distrust are two very different things. Distrust
comes much more easily than trust. If the system feels unfinished, then
the new user might begin to wonder what else is unfinished. It's easy to
forget how scary it can be, to alot of people, changing OS. I don't
think this should be underestimated. But there are other, more potent
arguments of course; it breaks muscle memory for instance.

[Bug 321176] Re: [Jaunty] alarm-clock causes screen to freeze

2009-04-25 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
I agree. If it was just alarm-clock, it'd been ok. It's not a critical
application, and it's not supported. But it isn't just alarm-clock. This
also happens if you try to strace something in gnome-terminal at least.
Other things cause this to happen as well. I think this bug should've
been marked with high priority and fixed before release. I hope it'll be
fixed quickly, cause this is really annoying, and as you said, people
who are running alarm-clock on startup, will have a useless system
unless they're able to figure this out. Not everyone will be able to.

Right. Only 18 months to go until next LTS-release, right? A change of

businesses are also the ones to prefer the LTS-releases? If applications
such as OpenOffice.org and Evolution won't receive updates in an LTS
release, then we might as well switch to update every six months or
switch to debian or something. I have a growing feeling that fancy is

[Bug 191889] Re: [MASTER] [WORKAROUND] Offline Mode feature fails to detect proper online state for networks that are managed outside of network manager.

2008-08-12 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
I'm also using a CDMA connection using PPP and Firefox always starts in
offline mode. This is extremely annoying, but not really a big problem.
However, this also means that no Prism-applications work at all, because
it also starts in offline mode, and doesn't have a way to switch.

[Bug 219495] Re: Performing a Copy on an Evolution 2.22.1 Task crashes Evolution

2008-04-28 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
This has been confirmed, and fixed upstream.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new task with some text in the body.
2. Save and close the task editor.
3. View the task in the preview and select some text
4. Copy the text, either using Edit Copy or Ctrl+c
5. Notice how evolution just closes.

Bugzilla bug: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=524121

Please add this to a stable release update for Hardy.

[Bug 221620] [NEW] TV streams doesn't resume after pause

2008-04-24 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

When you watch certain TV streams using Totem in Firefox, it usually
works fine, though not all the time. I may have to start another stream
and go back to the one I was watching, and sometimes I think it's
necessary to close Firefox and reopen it for the stream to work at all.
I think that's actually another bug, but the description fitted nicely
into this one. Someone more qualified can file that bug if deemed
necessary. However, once a stream is running, if you pause it, it
consistently doesn't resume afterwards. I do not know if this is limited
to a certain type of stream, but I hope the steps to recreate will
enable a qualified debugger to determine that.

* To recreate, open http://www1.nrk.no/nett-tv/klipp/359580 (This is Norway's
official television channel)
* You'll get a list of links to programmes on the left hand side, and a flash
player (or totem plugin, I'm not sure about that relation) in the right hand
side.
* Start a program by clicking a link in the list.
* It should open. It doesn't always, and I have no idea why, but if it doesn't
close firefox and go back to the page and try again. It will open eventually.
* When the stream is running, wait a minute or so, and pause it.
* Resume the stream. You'll notice it's running but then shortly stops. A
reasonable assumption is that it's reading from cache but not reopening the
connection to the server.

This is an incredibly annoying bug, and I hope it'll be easily fixed and
that it'd be given some priority.

[Bug 210268] [NEW] Nautilus' should use folder settings for the Desktop.

2008-04-01 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Nautilus is used to draw both the desktop and the file browser. The
desktop is just a normal folder like any other, be it ~ or ~/Desktop,
Nautilus' settings for that folder should also apply to the desktop.
That is, when you set a desktop background, I think that background
should be used in the file browser too, and when you change the icon
size in the file browser, then that icon size should be used on the
desktop. This behaviour should probably be configurable using gconf-
editor.

[Bug 194322] [NEW] Separate tray from Notification Area (micromize)

2008-02-22 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Windows uses the system tray to hide applications you want to get out of
your way, but don't want to close. That's fine, I like that feature.
However, in Ubuntu and GNOME, we don't really have a tray. We have the
notification area, which very much resembles the system tray in Windows,
but it should be used when updates are available, a reboot is required,
marsian attacks, etc. It would be nice if we could have one for both
features. I for one, love Alltray. Being able to hide firefox or
evolution is nice, but I should be able to move those icons away from
the notification area, making the notifications more visible.

How about a fork of Notification Area to be used for exactly that? What
Windows calls minimize to tray, we'll call Micromizing, and
micromized applications are called Micro icons, or Microns. This
could be really nice when combined with an application like Alltray,
which could be renamed to Micromizer.

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2008-02-06 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Do you mean posision as the posision specified in gconf? Because that
would be interesting. There is a configuration option for panel applets,
called panel_right_stick. It seems that all of thiese problems are
related to applets on the far right of the screen. Has anyone tried to
move the panels a couple of pixels away from the edge and other applets
and made sure panel_right_stick isn't enabled? It's just a wild guess,
but could be worth a try.

Is it always the clock that's being pushed to the left? It's the applet
that takes the longest time to load here.. Might that have anything to
do with it?

[Bug 182805] Memo previews are blanked every minute

2008-01-14 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

The preview of a memo is blanked every minute. This is really annoying
when you have a memo that it takes more than a minute to read. You'll
have to select the memo in the memo list for it to be visible again, but
then you've spent some time already, so once you've opened it again and
found the place in the text where you were cut off, it's blanked again.
This happens every minute at the same second.

[Bug 181697] Local Evolution users should be able to share data

2008-01-09 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

In Evolution, there is an On this computer type for all types of data;
calendars, mail folders, tasks, notes and contacts. It's quite common
for people to share the same computer, either physically, or using a
terminal server such as LTSP or NX. It should be easy to enable users to
share their data with other users via the filesystem. At least in read-
only mode. I'm not sure it would be a good idea to let several users
have write access at the same time, but even being able to just view
another users data would be of great value to lots of users. If Mother
just wants to see if Father has time to pickup Child, it'd be overkill
to invest in a MS Exchange server or something like that.

Solution, add a Select calendar button to the dialog that appears when
you create a new calendar On this computer. The filesystem permissions
will decide if one can write to it or not. Shared data is located in
/home/evolution-share, for instance. It shouldn't be more complicated
than that?

[Bug 177867] Totem doesn't play when opening a file that's already open

2007-12-21 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

In Gutsy, when you have a directory of sound files that doesn't
necessarily belong in a playlist, it's common to just click the file you
want to hear, having the player in the background. This works good with

2007-12-08 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Yes, that's still a problem in gutsy. I just tried. I've also discovered
that the timezone configuration isn't displayed even though it's checked
in the view menu.

This time, I did the following:
1) opened evolution and selected calendar view.
2) double-clicked on the top field in my day-view to create an all-day event.
3) that dialog doesn't show the timezone setting. In the View-menu, it's
selected.
4) I unselected and selected the timezone setting in the view-menu. Now it's
visible again.
5) I selected a time-zone from the world map.
6) wrote a short summary
7) saved.
8) double-clicked the new event. The time-zone setting is not visible, even
though it's checked in the view-menu.
9) unselected and reselected the timezone setting in the view menu and had a
look at it. The old timezone is displayed.

[Bug 152917] Re: evolution appointment timezone issues

2007-10-15 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Thank you for pointers. On the second issue, yes, you're right: it works
as expected if you check timezone in the View menu. However, it's
automatically displayed when you create an all-day event, but not if you
create a normal one. I think it's inconsistent. It should either always
be displayed or never. I would prefer if it was always displayed by
default.

Steps to reproduce the first issue:
Open Evolution in Calendar view and create an all-day event.
Fill out some data, set a timezone and save.
You'll be asked if you want to modify This instance only, or All instances.
 Select All instances.
Open the event again, and notice that the new timezone has not been stored.

Do the same again, but this time, answer This instance only. Open the event
again,
and you'll see that is has been updated.
