[Bug 1246272] Re: Keyboard layout changing randomly

2014-05-24 Thread Jochen Fahrner

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1240198

Mirko, you are right. And it's also a shame how long critical bugs are
unresolved. See Bug #884 . This makes nouveau graphics driver
totally unusable on laptops (laptops need supsend/resume for power
saving). This bug is reported in january 2013 and still unresolved!

When those critical bugs are unresolved for such a long time, you can
think about how low long it will take till this bug gets fixed. It's
time to think about a switch to some other, more stable system.

This is NOT a duplicate of Bug #1240198! In this bug the keyboard layout
is correct after booting. The bug is, that it is changing randomly AFTER
booting.

[Bug 1246272] Re: Keyboard layout changing randomly

2014-05-21 Thread Jochen Fahrner
I'm also wondering why this is of low priority. A system with a broken
keyboard layout is totally broken and unusable. IMHO this is high!

I'm thinking about downgrading to 12.04 which really worked flawless for
me. Since install of 14.04 I have lots of problems on my MacBook 5,1.

Nouveau is crashing on resume from suspend. Bug #884

Nvidia often does not recognize graphics card and input devices. Bug
#1319899

Wifi often tries endless to connect. Maybe Bug #1310746, I'm not sure.

Keyboard layout is changing randomly.

My MacBook got really unusable with this upgrade. All these bugs exits
since months, and my hope that they will be fixed soon is fading away
from day to day.

This is not what the One Hundred Papercuts claims. :-(

[Bug 1246272] Re: Keyboard layout changing randomly

2014-05-09 Thread Jochen Fahrner
I can confirm comment #29. I'm on Trusty with a german keyboard layout
(qwertz). After login all is ok. But sometime later the layout suddenly
switches to some englisch layout (qwerty). The indicator still is
showing german. Manual switching to US and then back to DE restores the
german layout.

[Bug 1315345] Re: "open with" MIME-type functionality broken

2014-05-02 Thread Jochen Fahrner
After some googling around I found a workaround for this problem:
Nautilus now needs a "%U" in the Exec line of an applications .desktop
file.

with a line

Exec=avidemux2_gtk %U

Nautilus shows it in the "open with" dialog.

Either fix this new behaviour in nautilus, or fix ALL .desktop files of
all applications.

[Bug 1315345] [NEW] "open with" MIME-type functionality broken

2014-05-02 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Public bug reported:

I cannot open a video/mpeg file with avidemux.

The desktop file for avidemux has the correct entries:

MimeType=video/mpeg;video/x-mpeg;video/x-avi;application/x-flash-
video;application/x-shockwave-flash;video/flv

The MIME-type of a file I want to open in nautilus with avidemux is
"video/mpeg". The "open with" dialog in nautilus is missing avidemux.
When I select "other application" and then "show more applications"
there is still no possibility to select avidemux.

This was working fine in 12.04, but is now broken in 14.04.

[Bug 1153488] Re: Treats bluetooth input device batteries as batteries

2014-05-02 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Is this bug about showing a wrong icon or showing the mouse battery at
all?

IMHO a mouse battery should not be shown at all. My Logitech wireless
mouse has a non-chargable battery (primary cell) which runs a year (or
longer) with the same battery. Its absolutely useless to show its status
in favour of the laptop battery. My main concern is the laptop battery,
not the mouse battery, and I wish to see laptop battery status all the
time!

This problem still exists in 14.04.

Bodum, I don't want to clutter my system with Gnome. Some time ago I
left Ubuntu because of all these Gnome 3 things are very hungry on
resources. I wanted a leightweigt but comfortable OS and found it in

seen, wasting resources endless. I'm now very happy with Debian
Wheezy/Xfce and don't want to clutter this perfectly running system. I'm
sorry.

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-03-09 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Maybe I'm suffering from the same problem. Every time I upload a large
file through davfs2 to my web server, Thunar freezes completely, it even
does not redraw it's window. This even happens if I copy that file in
terminal, without Thunar. Thunar is frozen until file upload is
complete.

PCManFM and Rox filer are not affected by this problem. I don't know
about Nautilus, I don't want to install all these Gnome 3 libs.

with that change you have to wait the first time you click on "Network".

>Now in my file i have

>so i had to delete "lmhosts host" ???

It's essential that you remove the "host". This is the cause for the hangs.
But you can also remove the lmhosts. This has no function until you add some
entries in /etc/samba/lmhosts.

I think I found a solution for this nasty bug. In /etc/samba/smb.conf
acivate the "name resolve order" line and change it to:

name resolve order = wins bcast

The "host" component of the search tries browsing the internet and makes
the search hang.

[Bug 1022353] [NEW] Nautilus ignores settings for thumbnail creation

2012-07-08 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Public bug reported:

I have set Nautilus to show thumbnails only for local drives and only
for files less than 10mb. I have a network volume mounted with davfs2
and if I open a folder containing videos, Nautilus tries to create
thumbnails causing all files to be downloaded and blocking Nautilus
totally. Nautilus should not try to create thumbnails with this setting
in davfs2 folders.

[Bug 13983] Re: Evolution virtual trash / "real" trash on IMAP server

2011-11-23 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Boleslaw, you misunderstand. A protocol has nothing to do with a user
interface. These are two distinct things.
Look at the POP-protocol: it has no folders, it has no trash and it is not
designed to leave mail on the server. But many mail clients have local folders,
local trash, and leave mail on the server. The protocol is only the transport
mechanism for mail, it has nothing to do with the way a mail client offers mail
to the user.

Now look at IMAP. Many old clients used it similar as POP, they fetched
mail from the server as they did with POP. Folders were only local in
these old clients. Modern clients work different, they leave mail on the
server, they use folders on the server, and since trash is only a normal
folder, they can move deleted mails to the trash folder on the server.
Why should they restrict the user interface to the technical limits of
the underlying protocol? There is no reason to do that.

[Bug 13983] Re: Evolution virtual trash / "real" trash on IMAP server

2011-11-15 Thread Jochen Fahrner
Don't mind about it. Evolution is history. Canonical has decided to make
Thunderbird the default mail client, and they did it right. The
evolution of evolution got stuck in the last century. If someone is
argueing "this is the way how imap is designed to work", he is not
willing to make his piece of software user-friendly. This is a point
which makes Apple so successfull. The user experience has to have the
highest priority, not some old fashioned technical arguments.

[Bug 225361] Re: other users don't have access to .gvfs

2011-01-02 Thread Jochen Fahrner
We are now on 10.10 Maverick and this bug still exists. I can't believe that!
I have over 20 years experience in unix systems, and believe me, if this bug is
meant "by design", than this design is broken!
There should be nothing that root can't access on my own machine. There are
some filesystems for accessing remote file systems (e.g. nfs), where you can
define root acces as "nobody". This is for security reasons, because you don't
always have control over user rigths on remote systems. But inside my own
system, root should have access to everything.

And even if I have mounted filesystems where my root account has nobodys
rights, then it should be possible to exclude them with rsyncs -x
option (don't cross filesystem boundaries). This seems to be a second
bug. Why does rsync try to include .gvfs with the -x option? If this is
a mounted filesystem, it should be recognized as such.

2010-12-29 Thread Jochen Fahrner
unsound, there is something broken with your .deb package. After
installation through ubuntu software center, there is something broken
in software center that should be repaired. But software center always
gives the same error and goes into an endless loop, asking to repair
again and again. I aborted this repair, and now update manager sees an
update for the glib package. When letting update manager install this
update, I have the old version of glib again. How can I get rid of this
old package in update manager?

[Bug 672873] Re: Installed GSettings schemas not detected on PowerPC

2010-12-27 Thread Jochen Fahrner
unsound, you are my hero!
Now user administration and Empathy are working.

First I tried it my own, installed glib2.0 source version 26.0 and
applied the patch. A "make install" installed the libs to
/usr/local/lib, not to /lib. So I copied
/usr/local/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0.2600.0 to /lib, and that crashed my
whole system. :-(

I had to restore this lib from the live cd.

Now, with your debian package it is working fine. Many thanks for this,
and I hope that this fix will find a way to the update manager.
