[Bug 878941] Re: Mail Notification Plugin Doesn't Notify

2012-05-01 Thread John M
As a workaround: For Ubuntu 11.10, I used the stracciatella PPA (
https://launchpad.net/~janvitus/+archive/gnomestracciatella ). It has
already been updated for precise, and includes the evolution packages.

[Bug 863773] Re: gedit crashed with SIGSEGV in __memcpy_ssse3() (when using snippet)

I confirm that installing the package from oneiric-proposed (gedit
version 3.2.3-0ubuntu0.1) solves the issue ---i.e., drag and drop from
nautilus no longer crashes gedit when the snippets plugin is enabled.

[Bug 857348] Re: All python plugins are broken by a bad import

2011-09-27 Thread John M
I just got the amd64 packages from
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libpeas/1.1.3-0ubuntu1/+build/2765954
and the gedit plugins seem to be working again (including the one for
latex, from git).

@Alex Schiff: The gedit-latex-plugin from git needs gedit-dev, which in
turn requires a libpeas-dev package with a matching version.

(gedit:13751): libpeas-WARNING **: Could not find loader 'python' for

Since the error is similar to the one described in Bug #839712, the
plugins might be broken as a result of the last upgrade to the python-
gobject package.

The latest git version of gedit-plugins is 3.1.5, whereas the one in the
Ubuntu repositories is 3.1.4. So updating the package in the
repositories could solve the issue.

[Bug 844238] Re: Nautilus cut/copy/paste requires selecting cut/copy twice

After experiencing the same bug in Nautilus 2.30, I noticed that it is
actually triggered by the version of parcellite currently in oneiric
repositories. There's a similar bug ( Bug #848771 ) which suggest that
upgrading the package to the rc5 might solve the issue.

twice, otherwise the Paste option does not activate. The behavior is
the same if done from the Edit menu, the context menu or the
Ctrl+{X,C,V} keys.

I get the same behavior in both my desktop and my laptop.

[Bug 792709] [NEW] Gnome panel drawer applet 'shivers' with 100% CPU (and crash?) when oversized

2011-06-04 Thread John M
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Increasing the width ("size") of the gnome-panel 'Drawer' applet when
the applet is on the far edge of the screen past the available width
until the screen edge (see screenshot, somewhat hard to describe.) when
the drop-down menu (the whole point of the drawer app) is open causes
the drop-down to go absolutely crazy and shake back and forth with 100%
CPU usage, making the system totally non-responsive.

In my case, the gnome-panel was 54px tall (I believe the drawer applet
attempts to make itself square so this means the drawer applet was 54px
wide as well) and the bug occurred when the 'size'(width) of the drop-
down was increased to >= 44px through the properties menu of the drawer
applet.

Again, the attached screenshot illustrates the test-case for this, just
increase the 'size' up some more and should occur. I have not tested
with any other sizes of the panel aside from the mentioned 54px, but I
have a hunch this is some kind of an edge case, because when I hit 44px
wide, the button to increase the size in the properties windows grayed
out, but this did not matter as the system had just became unresponsive.

Holy wow, I just tested this again to make sure it wasn't a fluke and it
totally crashed the entirety of gnome. Had to reboot the whole system
because gnome was totally non-responsive and messed up everywhere when I
logged in again before the reboot. Wow. (firefox saved the contents of
this though, phew :])

[Bug 772639] Re: can't assign keyboard shortcuts for "Move to workspace X"

2011-05-03 Thread John M
Not sure if this is your problem or not, bradmont, but I found that the
'Move window to workspace x' shortcuts were the only ones that were
broken. I did not mean to use these anyways though, I wanted to
reconfigure the 'Switch to workspace x' keys.

[Bug 658339] Re: Evolution Super SLOW in start-up

2010-10-22 Thread John M. Novosel
I'm having similar problem. I have Ubuntu 10.10. Evolution 2.30.3.

It operates UN-REASONABLY SLOW. It is CONSTANTLY actively doing something in
the background with status showing:
  "Filtering new message(s) (xxx% complete)".

This percentage complete increases constantly. This process updates the
percentage complete in a staggered manner. It is fast and then slow and
then fast again and then slow again and NEVER FINISHES. I can watch it
FOR HOURS and observe that it will get to 99%, and then IMMEDIATELY go
back to 0% complete.

The process is GRINDING all the iron-oxide off of my hard drive with a
vigor that I haven't EVER SEEN BEFORE HELP!!

[Bug 528474] Re: empathy crashed with SIGSEGV in tp_proxy_get_object_path()

2010-09-05 Thread John M
With the newest empathy I don't get the crash. It seems that it was one
of GNOME's usual upgrade inconsistencies. Not sure if the following is
still relevant:

Before upgrade, I deleted everything GNOME-related, in my home directory,
except for the following:
$XDG_*_HOME/telepathy
$XDG_*_HOME/Empathy
~/.gconf/apps/empathy
~/.gconf/apps/nautilus_actions
~/.gnome2/gedit
~/.gnome2/keyring
~/.gnome2/accelsgedit (file)
~/.gnome2/gedit-2 (file)
~/.gnome2/gedit-metadata.xml (file)
~/.gnome2/Vim (file)
~/.mission-control
~/.gtk-bookmarks (file)
~/.viminfo (file)
~.vimrc (file)

(I deleted any other directories/files not related to GNOME, except the
following: $XDG_*_HOME/exaile, ~/.beagle, ~/.filezilla, ~/.mozilla,
~/.opera, ~/.Skype, ~/.ssh, ~/.thunderbird, ~/.VirtualBox, ~/.xine,
~/.bash*, ~/.pam_environment, ~/.profile)

I did a clean install on the / partition (my /home partition is
separate). After the install, empathy worked, except that it always
crashed whenever I tried to access the history of conversations. But
after yesterday's update, I can no longer reproduce the crash.

[Bug 618607] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2010-09-04 Thread John M
Nautilus is having trouble with some of my CDs.

Some of them are shown as "Blank CD-R Disc", and even though they're not
blank. Nautilus only shows no contents, only the CD/DVD Creator message
with the Write to Disc button. When I mount those CDs using Disk
Utility (palimpsest), I can access their contents through one of the two
"Blank CD-R Disc" entries on the Places panel.

Some other CDs are not shown as blank, but those are the ones that cause
the crash when I try to access them.

On the same computer, I checked the same CDs under Red Hat (EL5.5), and
they're mounted just fine, so it's not a hardware problem.

[Bug 560490] [NEW] Nautilus restarts after pressing the arrow keys

2010-04-10 Thread John M
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

After clicking the desktop background (to make the desktop gain focus),
whenever I press the left/right/up/down keys, nautilus restarts ---i.e.,
all instances/windows of nautilus close, the desktop icons dissapear and
then reappear after a while.

I'm using Lucid (fresh install from the beta2 CD image, no upgrade), on
a 64-bit machine.

[Bug 438266] Re: gdebi don´t work - invalid f ile descriptor

2009-10-25 Thread John M
All that happened with a fresh install of the release candidate... So
hopefully it's not "many" different bugs.

While trying to install libstdc++5*.deb (which I still need), I got the
"invalid file descriptor" dialog; the same thing happened trying to
install the deb package of Opera. But it all goes away after I change
the file permissions in the /etc/apt and /var/lib/synaptic
directories... and it comes back after "sudo apt-get update" (and in
general, sudo-related operations seem to screw things up in my machine).

I seem to be the only person having this problem, so I'm not sure to
which package it belongs. Thanks.

[Bug 438266] Re: gdebi don´t work - invalid f ile descriptor

2009-10-25 Thread John M
I still get this error, after I use the "sudo" command on files related
to APT. I noticed that the behavior of sudo in karmic always defaults
to access o-rwx ---and that defeats the purpose of installing system-
wide software using sudo, among other things.

*For example, running the following line in the terminal

   sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release
-cs).list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

causes the medibuntu.list to be saved with access mode 640. If I then
run the command "sudo apt-get update", gdebi-gtk cannot be used after
that ---and the update-manager complains that it cannot access either
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list or /var/lib/synaptic/preferences.

*Also, the command "sudo update-mime-packages /usr/share/mime" changes the
access modes for the mime-types lists, and after that nautilus assigns
text/plain to all the files shown.

[Bug 204547] Re: Fortran files: gedit code-comment plugin and gtksourceview

2009-08-25 Thread John M
Hi,

The issue with wrong mime type assignment due to "!-" or uppercase file
extension is solved in Jaunty (and, so far, it's working just fine in
Karmic Alpha 4). Although the syntax highlighting still misbehaves.
For example:

^program test
^character arg
^call testsub(arg)
^case('a')
^case default
^cycle
^end program test

All the lines within the program block are highlighted as comments
---according to the fortran.lang file incluided with Jaunty and Karmi
(alpha 4), that's due to a "hack to avoid considering ^COMMON a
comment". The hack, at line 46, is:

  !|(^[Cc](\b|[^Oo]))

A better form would be:

  !|^[*]|(^[Cc](\b|[^OoAaHhYyLl]))

Although there might be better ways (I've never been good at regular
expressions).

Also, there are some missing keywords (in regards to Fortran 95; e.g.,
ALLOCATE, DEALLOCATE, DEFAULT, INTERFACE...) and none of the Fortran
2003 keywords are included (e.g., BIND).

GFortran has supported the Fortran 2003 ISO C Bindings (among other
Fortran 2003 features) since 2006 at least, so it's about time they're
included in the gtksourceview file.

My version of the fortran.lang file was attached to a previous post in
this bug report (it includes the new hack and the missing keywords,
among others); it can be used to improve the current version of the
fortran.lang file a little bit.

At the time of crash, it was an empty Fortran source file (the copy of
another empty file in the same directory). I cannot upload an empty
file, so assuming the name of the original (empty) file is "foo.f90"

was trying to rename from the gedit file browser pane) is "foo

[Bug 351824] [NEW] Embedded terminal changes to wrong directory

2009-03-30 Thread John M
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit-plugins

Using gedit in jaunty beta, with the embedded terminal plugin enabled,
and selecting the option "Change directory" in the embedded terminal,
does not change to the directory that corresponds to the active
document, but to its parent directory.

For example, if I open the file "/home/${USER}/tutorial/texts/hello.txt"
in gedit, activate the bottom pane and right-click the embedded terminal
to select "Change directory", the terminal will point to the
"/home/${USER}/tutorial" directory, instead of pointing to
"/home/${USER}/tutorial/texts".

The "Change directory" option worked just fine in all the previous
versions (i.e., intrepid, hardy, gutsy,...), so it seems like a
regression.

This particular bug is still present in Intrepid. The steps to
reproduce (the same ones given above) are:

* Make sure visual effects are enabled
* Add the window selector applet to a panel
* Open a bunch of windows of different applications
* Click the Window Selector to open the menu (all of the windows should be
listed)
* Click the Window Selector again to close the menu
* Click the Window Selector again to open the menu (some, not all, of the
windows should be listed).

Re: [Bug 33673] Re: Not obvious when logout is stalled by window on another virtual desktop / window beneath front-most one / window is minimised

2009-01-06 Thread John M
Maybe i wasn't clear enough: it happens even when gedit has no open
documents. For example, if I open gedit right after login, close the
(only) unsaved document and then press the logout button, I
nevertheless get the window telling me that gedit is blocking logout.

Also, the auto_save_session option doesn't work in intrepid, so it
was unnecessary for me to mention.

It seems that intrepid is totally broken, and I'm tired of trying to
make things work, say:

*the network manager issues with the interfaces file
*the xserver conflicts with compiz
*the screensaver making crash the xserver
*nautilus not knowing how to eject a CD and when it finally ejects
the disc tray autocloses again
*xserver problems in general
*gnome-session's auto-save not working at all
*nautilus search STILL not workin properly

I guess I'll just go back to hardy or switch distro. Thanks anyway
for the help.

Re: [Bug 204547] Re: Fortran files: gedit code-comment plugin and gtksourceview

2008-12-03 Thread John M
Hi,

I'm still using Hardy (Network Manager issues in Intrepid make it
unusable), and it's still too early for me to test 9.04.

In Hardy, the code-comment plugin now works as expected ---although
there are two extra entries in the Edit menu for commenting code
(C and U), and those don't work.

The source is still taken as text/x-vhdl if the first two characters
in the source file are "!-" (without the quotes).

I added some missing extensions to the freedesktop.org.xml file
(*.f03; *.fpp and so on) and also modified the fortran.lang file
---I'm no xml expert so I don't know if modifying it made things
worse... although it seems to work. The file is attached. That's it.

John.

[Bug 204547] Re: Fortran files: gedit code-comment plugin and gtksourceview

2008-05-24 Thread John M
There are two new issues, besides the one I pointed out above, with the
way gedit highlights Fortran files:

-If the file extension is F90 (instead of f90) and the file was
originally written in MS-Windows, it is clasiffied as a MATLAB file
(mime: text/x-matlab)

-If the file extension is f or F, the file is not highlighted at all
(i.e., the mime is text/plain).

[Bug 207407] Re: gedit autoscrolls while moving text selection

2008-04-29 Thread John M
Well, I don't know whether this qualifies as bug or wishlist.

It has to do with the way gedit behaves when you select some text and
then try to move such selection with the mouse. If the text you select
is at the top or at the bottom of the client area*, then gedit
autoscrolls the area so that the selected text is at the center of the
client area, and it tends to be confusing since the target point to the
which the selected text is going to be moved, needs to be found again by
the user.

Steps to reproduce:
- Open a text file large enough to be scrollable (e.g., 100 lines or so)
- Scroll down so that the line 41 is located at the top of the of the client
area.
- With the mouse, select some text from line 41 and, while holding the mouse
button, start moving it slowly to the bottom (at this point, gedit will
autoscroll up so that the line 41 is located at the center of the client area;
by default, it shouldn't autoscroll at all, since it tends to be confusing).

Also, when you move some selected text with the mouse, there is no
indication (i.e., insertion point) of where exactly the text is going to
be once you release the mouse button; the mouse arrow is changed by a
little hand during this process, but it is pretty much useless.

Steps to reproduce:
- Open a text file and paste the following two lines:
There'se's buying a st a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
  And shairway to heaven
-Select "e's buying a st" from the first line and, using the mouse, move it to
the second line so that it is located exactly after "And sh" (notice that there
is no way to know exactly where the text will be put, since there is no
insertion mark).

And I don't whether this is the usual way or not, but when selecting
text by using the keyboard (i.e., Ctrl+Shift+Arrows), selections are
done on an alphabetic, numeric or underscore basis, instead of being
done on a word basis (i.e., selecting the text "Fahrenheit_451" could be
done in one step, instead of two)... And the same applies when moving
through the text on a word by word basis (i.e., Ctrl+Left or
Ctrl+Right).

[Bug 207407] [NEW] gedit autoscrolls while moving text selection

2008-03-26 Thread John M
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

When moving a text selection with the mouse, gedit autoscrolls so that
the currently highlighted line is centered to the screen/client area.
This tends to be confusing (i.e., the user needs to locate the target
line again). Usually happens when the highlighted line is near the
top/bottom of the screen. Also, there is no indication of the exact
insertion point ---and the mouse icon is not useful at all.

This happened in Gutsy, and still happens in Hardy-beta.

[Bug 186250] Re: gedit unable to open text file

2008-03-22 Thread John M
I installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron beta a couple of days ago. The draw-
spaces plugin is still unstable: opening the slatec file with the plugin
enabled, causes gedit to freeze, and I eventually have to kill the
application (since there is no response). I still haven't checked the
issue with the Latin-1 encoding.

Also, funily, the plugin remains enabled after if I disable it through
the preferences (and is finally disabled after I open/close gedit a
couple of times).

[Bug 204547] [NEW] Fortran files: gedit code-comment plugin and gtksourceview

2008-03-21 Thread John M
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit-plugins

Hi,

I just installed the beta of Hardy Heron, and have a couple of comments
regarding gedit:

In Gutsy, the gedit code-comment plugin was unable to comment/uncomment
Fortran files (*.f90, *.f95, etc.), although that option used to be
available in Feisty ---I thought it was related to the "sort-of-beta"
status of gktsourceview-2.0, so my solution was simply to add an old
version of codecomment.* to my plugins folder. The problem still
persists in Hardy.

Also, I noticed that the gedit version that comes with Hardy is unable
to identify an *.f90 file as Fortran source, if the file starts with
"!-" (without the quotes) , as in the following:

!---
program hello
   print *, 'Hello world!'
end program
!---

In those cases the mime type, according to the the tooltip, is
text/x-vhdl, instead of text/x-fortran. It looks like
gedit/gtksourceview is not considering the file extension at all.

I don't understand what you mean by "latest Ubuntu release". Isn't 7.10
the latest release? Trying the alpha of Hardy Heron is not an option I
would want to try right now (I'll wait for the beta at least).

The offending file was slatec
(http://people.scs.fsu.edu/~burkardt/f_src/slatec/slatec.f90), which has
around 300 thousand lines. I just tried opening the file, with the
draw-spaces plugin active and in disabled highlight mode, and it seems
to work just fine (it also works with enabled highlight mode, but it's
too slow to be practical).

Thanks.

[Bug 186250] Re: gedit unable to open text file

2008-01-29 Thread John M
I replied a few days ago through my e-mail client, but it seems like it
didn't go through this time. So:

Ubuntu: 7.10
   kernel: linux-rt 2.6.22-14.47
   gedit: 2.20.3-0ubuntu1
   gedit-plugins: 2.20.0-0ubuntu1

I hope that helps.

[Bug 186250] [NEW] gedit unable to open text file

2008-01-26 Thread John M
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit-plugins

When I try to open a quite large text file, gedit closes itself right
after launching. This is the error thrown if I lauch the application
from a terminal:

gedit: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server
:0.0.

After playing with the options, I found that the problem was caused by
the "Draw spaces" plugin.

Re: [Bug 153445] Re: Launching awn causes 40 instances of python to run

2007-10-17 Thread John M
I didn't notice that the bug was classified as being from the
gnome-system-monitor. Actually, I launched the bug reporting tool
from there, so... Sorry abou that.
