[Bug 613474] [NEW] Umlauts in fs-label cause actual label to be longer than indicated
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-disk-utility Umlauts apparently have to be encoded to be used in a file system label (e.g. ä becomes M-CM-$). This causes confusion when a long fs-label with at least one umlaut in it is chosen, because the resulting label is longer than allowed, although it doesn't look like it. Steps to reproduce: 1. Open palimpsest 2. Create a new partition, choose ext4 3. Enter a long fs-label with at least one umlaut in it (the current german default is Neuer Datenträger, which palimpsest shortens to Neuer Datenträge because of the 16 characters label limit) 4. Create the partition Expected result: File system is created with the given label Actual result: Error message: Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: given file system label exceeds 16 characters For comparison, this is what it looks like if done manually: $ sudo tune2fs -L Neuer Datenträger /dev/sdb1 tune2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010) Warning: label too long, truncating. $ sudo tune2fs -l /dev/sdb1 | grep volume Filesystem volume name: Neuer Datenträg $ sudo blkid /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdb1: LABEL=Neuer DatentrM-CM-$g UUID=785fab65-ddb0-49b5-9722-2eca589994c7 TYPE=ext4 Note that the resulting label is 20 characters long, whereas palimpsest limits it to 16 characters. If the OS claims to support the Win7 interface, the BIOS reports fn-f8 as Super_L + p. Conclusion: No bug in Linux, the BIOS just (intentionally) reports fn-f8 differently for Vista and Win7. Which would indicate that Super + p is a feature that was introduced with Win7 :) As I suspect that more and more newer laptops are going to default to this behaviour, you would have to either quirk those to convert Super_L + p to DISPLAYTOGGLE (which is not feasible), or have everything that previously only reacted on DISPLAYTOGGLE to also react on Super_L + p. [Bug 524830] Re: problems triggered when I open the laptop lid

[Bug 524830] Re: problems triggered when I open the laptop lid
I suspect that the following is happening: - lid close causes a (fake) fn-f8 keypress (display toggle on the Dell Latitude E6400, gsd calls it fn-f7), gsd reconfigures outputs (all outputs off) - lid open causes another (fake) fn-f8 keypress, gsd reconfigures outputs (LVDS on) So, for one lid close and open, gsd should receive two (fake) fn-f8 keypresses and reconfigure the outputs each time. Unfortunately any keypress after a fn-f8 keypress will cause a duplicate fn-f8 keypress to appear (bug #535348), causing this: - lid close - fake fn-f8 keypress, gsd reconfigures outputs - lid open - fake fn-f8 keypress, which is causing a duplicate fn-f8 keypress to appear. gsd reconfigures outputs twice - if you hit any key at any time after you've opened the lid, this causes another duplicate fn-f8 keypress to appear. gsd reacts and again reconfigures outputs, causing the visual lag and flashing of icons. This is visible in the log I attached before, gsd claims to handle fn-f7-events four times. -- problems triggered when I open the laptop lid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/524830 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 524830] Re: problems triggered when I open the laptop lid
Fixing bug #535348 should provide correct behaviour. gsd should reconfigure the outputs after the lid was closed (all outputs are disconnected on lid-close) and again after it was opened (LVDS1 reconnected). -- problems triggered when I open the laptop lid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/524830 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 535426] Re: Totem video playback flickers when moving between windows
I repeated the same steps, it doesn't flicker with gst-launch-0.10 playbin2. It's probably connected to the selected widget indication. If the drop down menu above the playlist is selected, it turns orange. If you focus another window, the orange highlight disappears. I suspect that the same thing is happening when the video area is selected. If the totem window loses focus, the (in this case not visible) widget indication goes away, which causes a short flicker. -- Totem video playback flickers when moving between windows https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/535426 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 453748] Re: sets wrong brightness value with xrandr
The behavior has changed: Pressing fn-brightness-up/down while gnome-power-manager is running still causes actual_brightness to jump up/down two levels on each keypress, but it now represents the correct brightness (i.e. my display backlight really increases or decreases its brightness by two levels). I believe that the keypress is both handled by my laptop directly and by gnome-power-manager. BIOS (or hardware directly, however this is actually implemented) reacts to fn-brightness-up by increasing the brightness one level. g-p-m also reacts to the keypress by increasing the brightness by one level. This causes the backlight to actually increase its brightness twice on a single keypress. lshal reports for my backlight: udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer_backlight' info.addons = {'hald-addon-generic-backlight'} (string list) info.capabilities = {'laptop_panel'} (string list) info.category = 'laptop_panel' (string) info.interfaces = {'org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.LaptopPanel'} (string list) info.parent = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer' (string) info.product = 'Generic Backlight Device' (string) info.subsystem = 'backlight' (string) info.udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer_backlight' (string) laptop_panel.access_method = 'general' (string) laptop_panel.brightness_in_hardware = false (bool) laptop_panel.num_levels = 16 (0x10) (int) linux.hotplug_type = 2 (0x2) (int) linux.subsystem = 'backlight' (string) linux.sysfs_path = '/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0' (string) laptop_panel.brightness_in_hardware being set to false is wrong, my laptop supports that. ** Attachment added: lshal.txt http://launchpadlibrarian.net/33942421/lshal.txt ** Package changed: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) = hal-info (Ubuntu) -- sets wrong brightness value with xrandr https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/453748 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 453748] [NEW] sets wrong brightness value with xrandr
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager My laptop display backlight has 16 brightness values (0-15). If gnome-power-manager is not running and I set it all the way down to 0 (via fn-brightness-down) and watch /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness as I incrementally turn it up to full brightness again, I see the values 0, 1, 2, ... 15 as one would expect. If gnome-power-manager is running, I see the values 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, ..., 14, 15, i.e. jumping two levels up each time I increase the brightness one step. The backlight however really only increases the level by one each time I press fn-brightness-up, so when actual_brightness reaches 15 the actual brightness I see on my display is around half of the full backlight level. This causes the brightness notifications from notify-osd to report bogus values (thinking I already reached maximum when I'm just on half brightness etc.) This behaviour started very recently, probably when the xrandr-backlight KMS capability was enabled, it was working fine before. I'm not sure whether this is actually the fault of xserver-xorg-video-intel or the kernel, but as I see those bogus values only when gnome-power-manager is running I decided to file it against that. I have an Intel GM45 on a Dell Latitude E6400. Attaching the output of gnome-power-manager --verbose when incrementally setting the brightness from zero to full. [Bug 23220] Re: Closing lid should not turn off external LCD
Still broken in Intrepid. When the lid is closed, the external monitor also gets turned off, even if the internal display is already disabled by xrandr. Expected (default!) behaviour: - external monitor is connected, lid is being closed - internal display is turned off, external monitor remains active - move mouse or hit a key - internal display stays off - lid is being opened - internal display is turned on Actual (default!) behaviour: - external monitor is connected, lid is being closed - internal display and external monitor are being turned off - move mouse or hit a key - both displays are turned on, even though the lid is still closed This is very annoying, especially since bingnet's suggestion to set power management to do nothing does not only keep the external monitor on, but the internal display as well (as I would have expected).
