something wrong.

[Bug 1732489] [NEW] TMPTIME is not honoured

2017-11-15 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

TMPTIME is incorrectly migrated on an upgrade from Trusty to Xenial.

tmp.conf uses D where it should be d. This also has the effect of wiping
/tmp no matter what.

This is fixed in Debian.

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=795269

This could result in data loss, although storing non-volatile files in
/tmp is madness.

I have not seen this seen moving from Precise to Trusty. Also not seen
this on Xenial.

I can think of no reason for going backwards to Precise so you can close
this unless someone else is still seeing this on Precise (and Precise is
still supported).

[Bug 1252909] Re: Nautilus takes no notice of my selection in File --> Properties

2017-03-06 Thread Ken Sharp
The file menu, as well as all the others, have been removed from
Nautilus, which is marvellous.

Nemo, a fork of Nautilus which doesn't adore Unity, doesn't have this
issue in Trusty or Xenial. There is no Nemo for Precise but then it
wasn't needed.

[Bug 1452357] [NEW] MTP device fails to mount

2015-05-06 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

Yesterday I could access my Motorola Moto G (2013) Android phone via MTP
(mtp-probe). Today I cannot.

May 6 16:44:27 kernel: [ 613.641980] usb 1-3: USB disconnect, device number 5
May 6 16:44:30 kernel: [ 616.504041] usb 1-3: new high-speed USB device

May 6 16:44:30 kernel: [ 616.637429] usb 1-3: New USB device found,
idVendor=22b8, idProduct=2e82
May 6 16:44:30 kernel: [ 616.637437] usb 1-3: New USB device strings: Mfr=1,
Product=2, SerialNumber=3
May 6 16:44:30 kernel: [ 616.637442] usb 1-3: Product: XT1039
May 6 16:44:30 kernel: [ 616.637445] usb 1-3: Manufacturer: motorola
May 6 16:44:30 mtp-probe: checking bus 1, device 6:
"/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1d.7/usb1/1-3"
May 6 16:44:30 mtp-probe: bus: 1, device: 6 was an MTP device

*Was* an MTP device?

This may be due to libmtp* but they were not upgraded yesterday.

I can no longer access the files on my phone.

[Bug 1437885] [NEW] gnome-panel crashes while swapping openttd screen modes

2015-03-29 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

ALT+F moves OpenTTD from windowed to full-screen mode. Doing this

at unpredictable times. It crashes regularly, but it isn't clear how to
cause it.

[Bug 1409032] [NEW] gvfsd-smb: very high CPU utilisation

2015-01-09 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

Example:

I use Virtualbox and mount a .vdi on an SMB server. Using gvfsd-smb
(browsing within Gnome to find the share), gvfsd-smb uses up to 50% CPU
which slows down the entire system when accessing the network share.
Mounting using sudo ($ sudo mount -t smbfs -o guest, nounix, noperm
//server/share /media/share) so that cifs is used uses around 8% CPU.
The difference is dramatic!

If I didn't have sudo access my machine would grind to a halt when
trying to use the remote share.

I don't even know what's going on with the greeters in newer versions of

it's something I'll have to Google for a while to find a workaround.

[Bug 1260985] [NEW] Please enable uploadable translation (.po) files

2013-12-14 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

Translating 500+ strings via Launchpad is hideous. Please make it
possible to upload a .po file to make the process much easier.

Launchpad keeps telling me that I can help in translating these strings,

off OOPS messages, and repeat.

2013-12-07 Thread Ken Sharp
So the problem is that the packages mentioned in these comments are not
recommending this package? You need to open bugs for those packages.

As is usual in Ubuntu bugs people have all lumped their problems
together, so I'll close this invalid and ask that you open bugs for
those individual packages, assuming you first check that those packages
do not recommend this package and you installed them correctly.

Workaround is installing this package. gnome-keyring does not have a
bug.

[Bug 1059263] [NEW] Cannot reboot or shutdown system

2012-09-30 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

This usually occurs if two users have been logged on to the system via
X, even if one has logged out.

Select "reboot" or "shutdown" from the power icon and the whole screen
locks up. It does attempt to log out but it simply fails. Nothing
happens. Cannot CTRL or CTRL+ALT to another VT and have to SSH from my
Android phone to issue a sudo reboot or sudo shutdown.

The syslog says it all:

[Bug 750429] [NEW] empathy uses proxy when it shouldn't

2011-04-04 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Empathy is trying to connect to the Windows Live (MSN) service through
the proxy, but the system proxy settings only apply to HTTP and FTP.
Other applications respect this, but Empathy is trying to tunnel port
1863 (MSNP) through Squid. It therefore fails.

There is no way to set proxy settings within the app and adding
messenger.hotmail.com to the ignore hosts makes no difference
whatsoever.

[Bug 745090] [NEW] "Empty Junk" in Empathy would be nice

2011-03-29 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Most other mail clients have an "Empty Junk" option so that I don't have
to go into my Junk, select it, see what I was wishing to junk in the
first place and delete it manually. It would be nice if Empathy also
had this option - it does have a "Empty Deleted Items" option already.

[Bug 727415] [NEW] Disk Utility tries to launch Nautilus

2011-03-01 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-disk-utility

Disk Utility (palimpsest) defaults to opening Nautilus when clicking on
a mount link. If you don't use Nautilus then this produces an error.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open palimpsest
2. Pick a partition (or mount one)
3. Scroll down to the Mount Point section
4. Click on the link to open the mount
5. Error - Nautilus is not found

I'm not sure if it's possible to use a generic link not specific to
looking for Nautilus (or some other mechanism), but it probably is.

[Bug 592826] Re: "Places" shortcuts don't work

2010-10-15 Thread Ken Sharp
My motherboard died. I now have a new machine with a fresh Lucid AMD64
install. The only way to test this would be to go through an install
--> upgrade process which would take far too much time. I'm sure it can
be done on a VM but for now, I won't be doing that.

[Bug 592838] Re: Cannot click on status URLs in Empathy

2010-06-14 Thread Ken Sharp
There a number of possible ways to make the URL useful:

1. The tooltip can remain until the pointer moves outside of the window focus.
2. Right clicking on the user could bring up an option "Open URL..."
3. A user's status could appear under the username.

I guess it depends on whatever would be easiest.

[Bug 592826] Re: "Places" shortcuts don't work

2010-06-11 Thread Ken Sharp
It does appear to be specific to one user.

I have to take the hideous route from Intrepid to Lucid (Intrepid -->
Jaunty --> Karmic --> Lucid).

Trying to start a guest session doesn't do anything, it just locks the
screen.

[Bug 592826] Re: "Places" shortcuts don't work

2010-06-11 Thread Ken Sharp
It does work fine for a newly created user.
If the configuration is broken then it's something that has happened during the
upgrade process, it was fine before.

Right-clicking on shortcuts in Places does the same thing as left-clicking: it
tries to open the link (and fails).
I opened a nautilus window and changed the "Open with" to nautilus, but this
has not helped.

[Bug 592845] [NEW] Gimp crashes during Save As if files in the current folder change

2010-06-11 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open an image in Gimp.
2. Select Save As.

The image I was trying to export was located in /tmp and files are
created and destroyed in /tmp all the time. The changing file list
seems to cause Gimp to crash at this point.

Changing the current folder to ~/ does not crash (there are no changing
files).

$ gimp Screenshot.png

 assertion failed: (r == n_visible_rows)

(script-fu:18422): LibGimpBase-WARNING **: script-fu: gimp_wire_read():

At the time I was compiling using ccache distcc gcc so the files in /tmp
were changing regularly.

[Bug 592838] [NEW] Cannot click on status URLs in Empathy

2010-06-11 Thread Ken Sharp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Contacts (in AIM for example) can add URLs to their statuses and Empathy
will create a clickable link when hovering over the username.

Unfortunately when you move the mouse to try and click on the URL the
"tooltip" immediately disappears making it impossible to actually click
on anything.

Using Ubuntu Lucid and Empathy 2.30.1
