Re: [Bug 2020881] Re: Accessibility settings not persistent

2023-06-06 Thread Kieran
Restart mousekeys enabled but not working

gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.a11y.keyboard mousekeys-enable
true

Clear then enable mousekeys in settings now working

gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.a11y.keyboard mousekeys-enable
true

Occurs at every restart

I only use mousekeys but I have tried enabling Screen Keyboard which works
as expected!

Hope this helps

[Bug 1508146] Re: Alt+left/right arrows switch between tty consoles (Gnome Shell vanishes), cannot disable

2018-08-08 Thread Kieran Bingham
At the peril of adding another Me Too comment, this happened to me on
18.04.1

sudo kbd_mode -s

has fixed it for me.

There are two relevant things that I have been running on my system before this
happened.
 1) I have synergy installed, to share my keyboard and mouse to another
computer (installed recently)
 2) I was playing with /dev/uinput [0]

2018-05-16 Thread Kieran Bingham
I find my way here after losing xchat-gnome on the bionic upgrade:

Is there a way to get apt to suggest / recommend hexchat instead of
failing to install xchat-gnome?

[Bug 1557866] [NEW] connecting to samba share doesn't show all items

2016-03-15 Thread Kieran Grant
Public bug reported:

When connecting to certain Shares from a Windows computer (Windows 10, but
happened also from when it was Windows 7). I get this error:
Sorry, could not display all the contents of “google drive on wrs-scanner-pc”:
Invalid argument
But when accessing other shares on this folder I can access it.
Other Windows computers on the network can access it fine no problem.
Sometimes I can see an item or two from the Google Drive share, other times 0
items, and other times that error.
It looks to me like a gvfs-mount problem.
As far as I can tell, I am not hitting the max share limit on non-server
Windows versions. (Which limit to a maximum of 20 connections, we don't have
that many connecting it)

[Bug 1496581] [NEW] GOA configured Google calendar not using OAuth2

2015-09-16 Thread Kieran Bingham
Public bug reported:

I'm hitting this issue on my Ubuntu 15.04 installation regularly!

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=728496

Its symptom is to present a non-descript modal input box requesting a
password for my e-mail without any description as to why, or who is
asking for it.

More distinctly, you can enter either an incorrect or correct password,
and it will respond with "invalid password"

This leaves the user feeling quite dismayed, and concerned as to what is
being authenticated with my credentials.

The gnome bugzilla suggests that the issue has been resolved, and so
this simply needs a version bump - or a backport.

2014-05-29 Thread Kieran Clancy
Thanks Simon,

Looks like the KBCL variable is indeed the right one. Strange that it
changed from 01 to 04 rather than 01 to 05 though... If you have time
for a few more tests, I would love to know what values it takes when the
UEFI variable is modified from 00 through 07.

Currently we have:

UEFI KBCL
  00
  01 01
  02
  03
  04
  05 04
  06
  07

[Bug 1203592] Re: Keyboard backlight does not work in Samsung Series 9 NP900X4C

2014-05-29 Thread Kieran Clancy
Simon,

Sorry about that - there was a syntax problem in regions.c

I've just updated it so it should work properly now, if you are happy to
test it again.

The keyboard shortcut is currently set up to connect to the samsung
laptop kernel driver, but since the module is disabled on UEFI, the
shortcuts don't do anything. That's why I want to write a UEFI-safe
module for this.

[Bug 1203592] Re: Keyboard backlight does not work in Samsung Series 9 NP900X4C

2014-05-28 Thread Kieran Clancy
Simon,

It looks like your UEFI variable has a different name:

KBDBacklitLvl-8be4df61-93ca-11d2-aa0d-00e098032b8c

Please do xxd on this and see if it looks similar to my
SecKeyboardBacklightLevel variable.

Thanks for your DSDT. It looks like your machine doesn't have a KBLL
variable... the closest thing I could find was a KBCL variable, but I
have no idea if it does the same thing.

I have uploaded a program to probe the memory at this region, designed
for your DSDT, at:

https://github.com/kieranclancy/probe-dsdt-regions/tree/900x3g

(Note to others, do NOT run this program, it is just for Simon's DSDT
and could break your system. If you want a version of this program for
your machine's DSDT, please ask me.)

If you have time, can you please:

1. Compile this program from the 900x3g branch
2. Reboot to get a relatively clean variable state
3. Save the output of 'sudo ./probe'
4. Dump the KBDBacklitLvl UEFI variable with xxd and save this too.
5. Modify the KBDBacklitLvl variable slightly (e.g. from 00 00 00 07 to 00 00
00 06)
6. Reboot to reload variables
7. Save the output of 'sudo ./probe' to a new file

This will tell me whether your KBCL variable is the important one, or if
the variable has another name.

At some point I would like to handle these KBLL/KBCL variables in the
kernel, and this information from your machine can help me to write a
safe kernel module to do this.

[Bug 1203592] Re: Keyboard backlight does not work in Samsung Series 9 NP900X4C

2014-05-27 Thread Kieran Clancy
For those without KeyboardBacklight UEFI variables, can you attach a
list of the UEFI variables you do have, as well as attach a dump of your
DSDT:

sudo cat /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/DSDT > DSDT.aml

If you are not using UEFI (e.g. you have no /sys/firmware/efi directory)
then none of this will help you. Most likely you just need to fix your
key bindings.

[Bug 1203592] Re: Keyboard backlight does not work in Samsung Series 9 NP900X4C

2014-04-25 Thread Kieran Clancy
If you are using UEFI, do not remove the blacklist on samsung-laptop!

You are probably safe from the bricking bug with a recent kernel, but
there are other UEFI problems with samsung-laptop that have never been
resolved, like machine check exceptions.

I did find a way of setting the keyboard backlight without the samsung-
laptop module, but I am still working on it.

The ACPI DSDT defines a variable KBLL (keyboard back-light level?) in
the SNVS (system non-volatile storage). This is where the the backlight
level can be stored, but it is highly non-trivial to set. I wrote a
program for my own machine, but it has hard-coded memory addresses which
probably make it very unwise to run on other systems.

A slightly safer way, which requires a reboot to work, is to set the
keyboard backlight level in the UEFI variables.

On my system:

# cd /sys/firmware/efi/efivars
# ls *KeyboardBacklight*
SecKeyboardBacklightLevel-2f440835-38c4-44b6-b7e4-4f321c8b4189
# xxd -p SecKeyboardBacklightLevel-2f440835-38c4-44b6-b7e4-4f321c8b4189
070001
# echo 070005 | xxd -p -r >
SecKeyboardBacklightLevel-2f440835-38c4-44b6-b7e4-4f321c8b4189
# reboot

You can change that last byte from 00 through 06 or so. Don't change the
first or other bytes. At some stage during the next boot, it will be
read into the KBLL value mentioned above.

I use '01' pretty well permanently. Now that recent kernels detect the
ambient light properly, it comes on automatically when I need it.

[Bug 776271] Re: empathy does not connect to Google Talk after waking laptop up from sleep

I had a similar problem with empathy after upgrading to 11.04, mine was a
little worse.
Empathy could not connect to Gtalk at all using the supplied defaults for
Google.

The above instructions have fixed it however.

This is an issue for me in latest karmic with version 185.18.36-0ubuntu7

Using gstreamer-properties didn't work so I tried nvidia settings.
Unlike Scott from above, my hue setting was 0, but when I moved it to
something else then back to 0 the video was fixed. In VLC I managed to
work around the problem by setting the video output to OpenGL.

[Bug 32917] Re: Multimedia keys only works after re-configuring in gnome-keybinding-properties and restarting rhythmbox

2007-02-22 Thread Kieran Hogg
Before the rhythmbox patch to work with control-centre (off the top of
my head) it was not working but it has been since that patch.

[Bug 80896] Re: Changes to start-up programs are not saved

2007-01-28 Thread Kieran Hogg
I've had no need to, it's only a secondary system. I just update, play
with updates and that's it. I understand that something caused it
though, so I'll just put it down to doing something silly.

Nothing, it's only been freshly installed a week or so and I've not ran
anything out of the ordinary.

[Bug 80896] Re: Changes to start-up programs are not saved

2007-01-28 Thread Kieran Hogg
Sebastien: .config/autostart is owned by root so I think we've found
why. I'm 99% sure I've not done anything that would make it root-owned,
so is this a bug or just a mistake?

I have recorded a screencast of the behaviour:

[Bug 80896] Re: Changes to start-up programs are not saved

2007-01-21 Thread Kieran Hogg
Steps to reproduce:

Open "Sessions"
Click "New" in the "Startup Programs" tab
Add a program
See it is enabled and in the list
Restart Gnome
Notice it is no longer in the list

[Bug 80896] Changes to start-up programs are not saved

2007-01-21 Thread Kieran Hogg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

I'm running an up-to-date Feisty and any changes made to the session
start-up programs are not saved on restarting. Not a lot to go on I
know, just ask if you need any more information.

** Affects: gnome-session (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed
