I can confirm that removing the USB reciever and replacing it on a Microsoft Wireless 6000 fixes the issue. As Andrew suggested I used killall gnome-volume-control After that I can use gnome-volume-control to start it again. I'm going to wipe and reload with Alpha 3 (coming today I believe) this weekend. Thanks for the response but where would I then find the system sound settings and volume control panel? The Volume Control button from the speaker doesn't work.
