[Bug 592109] Re: ZIP archives with non-ASCII filenames cannot survive a round-trip in File Roller (when p7zip is not installed)
As I mardek quite a few bugs as duplicate of this one. I'd mention that there is a simple workaround, install p7zip. The bug is caused by zip/unzip stack provided by Info-Zip. In particular, zip(1) seems to have no problem creating a ZIP archive with non-ASCII file name; the encoding used is UTF-8. However, unzip(1) just refuse to list any non-ASCII printable character in filenames. As FIle Roller use zip/unzip as one of its backend for ZIP, the same issue can be seen in File Roller. When p7zip is installed, File Roller would use it as backend for ZIP instead. Therefore, to hide the problem from end users, we may let file- roller depends on p7zip so that we can guarantee that we have a working ZIP stack. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to file-roller in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/592109 Title: ZIP archives with non-ASCII filenames cannot survive a round-trip in File Roller (when p7zip is not installed) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/file-roller/+bug/592109/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 495880] Re: Extracting a file with german Umlaut in the filename doesn't work
Hey guys :) It is worth knowing that ZIP archives can come with different encodings for file names. The old standard encoding for ZIP is CP437 [1]. Since CP437 only covers the need of certain regions of the world, people on Windows began to use whatever local encoding available, for example, ZIP archives created in Simplified Chinese version of Windows uses CP936 [2]. In 2007, optional UTF-8 support is added to ZIP standard [3]. Unforunately, unzip pre-installed on Linux/Mac OS X and built-in ZIP support of MS Windows don't support the new standard well. I know some people want unzip be fixed but the unzip upstream seems inactive. And unzip is a program supporting so many platforms (including VMS!), so it may be a bit hard to hack. I would recommend 7Z archvie to do cross-platform archive exchange since it seems to support Unicode-based filename from day one. 1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_page_437 2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_page_936 3. http://www.pkware.com/documents/casestudies/APPNOTE.TXT -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/495880 Title: Extracting a file with german Umlaut in the filename doesn't work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/file-roller/+bug/495880/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 495880] Re: Extracting a file with german Umlaut in the filename doesn't work
As I tested the file in comment 3 on Ubuntu 12.04, this file should have encoding CP437. $ unar -e cp437 Prueba\ con\ acentos\ y\ espacios.zip #Works perfectly (You can install unar by sudo apt-get install unar) The result of unzip is a bit strange as it ask for password for one file, is this correct? Anyway, the big picture is that: * ZIP filename encoding is tricky * unzip has broken UTF-8 filename support and limited support of encoding conversion after a patch. * File Roller is just a frontend of tools like unzip, if you install p7zip it will invoke p7zip instead, which can result in working UTF-8 ZIP filename support. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/495880 Title: Extracting a file with german Umlaut in the filename doesn't work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/file-roller/+bug/495880/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 495880] Re: Extracting a file with german Umlaut in the filename doesn't work
Hi, sokolov The round-trip issue you mentioned roots from bugs in unzip (from Info- Zip project) . I already tried to reach Info-Zip people a few months ago, for exactly same issue affects my language (Chinese). http://www.info-zip.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4t=403 So if you use File Roller, please install p7zip so that File Roller can use p7zip as its backend and there won't be round-trip issue any more. If you works in command line, you may consider switching to other tools. zip/unzip seems to provide some unique and useful features, though.

[Bug 596193] Re: file-roller doesn't handle zip archives containing accentued characters correctly
As I studied this issue a little bit, I'd give a brief summary here. There are Unicode enabled and non-Unicode enabled ZIP archives. If you system has unzip/zip but not 7z, neither type of ZIP archives can be displayed in File Roller. This due to limitation of unzip. If you system has 7z, File Roller can correctly display Unicode enabled ZIP archives. For non-Unicode enabled ZIP archives, you can handle them with lsar/unar (included since 12.04), which supports encoding conversion natively. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to file-roller in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/596193 Title: file-roller doesn't handle zip archives containing accentued characters correctly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/file-roller/+bug/596193/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 580961] Re: unzip fails to deal correctly with filename encodings
Hi, all. I wonder we'd have a test cases database. I think we can use the bug tracking systems come with code hosting services . People use different natural languages and have different compression preferences can all post sample archives. Maintainers mark new and essential test cases as confirmed, repeated test cases as duplicate, ... This database, more specifically the confirmed part, can then be used as the verification tool of proposed solutions. This bug points to several unzip packages in different distributions. It seems that info-zip people refused local encoding related patch and info-zip's board is down. We'd maintain the patch ourselves, which is not ideal. (I'm not very sure whether info-zip's license permits forking) Is it possible to use p7zip, bsdtar or other promising projects, if any, as our foundation? if we have an CLI archiver with official supported encoding conversion capacity. The remaining work for file-roller and ark would be much easier. Changing main archiver may not be that dangerous, I believe, if we have enough test cases. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to a duplicate bug report (34667). https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/580961 Title: unzip fails to deal correctly with filename encodings To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/file-roller/+bug/580961/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
