[Bug 393177] Re: Too easy to show your password by accidentally typing in the username field at login
I don't think this was fully fixed, here is a copy of comment 12 from Bug #36855: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-gdm-themes/+bug/36855/comments/12 This issue has security ramifications as well, it leads to passwords being logged (which is pretty bad IMO). If you mis type your username or password, your are prompted to login again, starting with username. In many cases the user will just type the password again and hit enter, assuming he is re-prompted for password. The user is now prompted with the password field, but for him this is really confusing. Even if the user realizes what happened, there is no way the username can be fixed, so in most cases the user will hit enter again. Two things happen: - password is exposed in clear on the screen in the username field - password ends up in clear in /var/log/auth.log (if the user presses enter for the second time) I think the username and password fields should be shown at the same time, this would eliminate this problem. The other fix that seems to be implemented in Karmic is to never prompt for username, use a face browser for that, and only prompt for password. In some cases you may really not want to list all the available accounts, so proper username/password fields should be available as an alternative. -- Too easy to show your password by accidentally typing in the username field at login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/393177 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Yes, the exact same problem is in 8.10. No clue about 9.04. [Bug 275542] [NEW] jpg causes internal error, from Rhythmbox
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox One of the jpg files I have in my music folder (and only this one) cases an error in Rhythmbox. The file is listed under Import Errors, and the actual error says: Internal GStreamer problem; file a bug. Running Hardy amd64. Tried to file this under gstreamer, but kept getting this error: gstreamer does not exist in Ubuntu. Please choose a different package. If you're unsure, please select I don't know And gstreamer does show up when you click Choose. Also, every time this form comes back with an error the attachment is lost. ** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- jpg causes internal error, from Rhythmbox https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275542 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to rhythmbox in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 158868] unconfigured Last.fm pops confusing error on play
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox If Last.fm is not configure (no username/password entered) then an appropriate message should be displayed when you try to play Last.fm. Also, when you enter the username and password, there should be some confirmation that you entered the correct values. Either that, or proper error message when trying to play. [Bug 158871] import errors for pdf and m3u files
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox Some of my musing folders contain pdf and m3u files, Rhythmbox reports these are errors: - The MIME type of the file could not be identified (for pdf) - The GStreamer plugins to decode Unknown files cannot be found (for m3u) I would say that these files should be ignored and errors should be reported for them. What's even worse is the fact that these errors keep coming back every time you start Rhythmbox.
