[Bug 296075] [NEW] Gnome-Power-Manager hangs during general use

2008-11-09 Thread Mark Baran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

In the latest Ubuntu release, Intrepid Ibex, the Gnome Power Manager has
a tedency to hang for a very long time when it enters the function
"do_nanosleep" (as reported by Intel Powertop), showing generally
unstable behavior. Moreover, gnome-power-manager also hangs when a
battery is plugged in or out. Ironically, Powertop also notes that
gnome-power-manager is the leading cause of battery life reducing
interrupts when gnome-power-manager hangs itself. Solving the hang may
therefore also help my battery life.

Researching the problem on the internet, it seems this bug may be in the
kernel, fixed by a patch to ACPI EC subsystem. This thread seems to
indicate that these timer problems were solved in the latest kernel
iteration.
My laptop is the same model, an Acer Aspire One. Perhaps the ACPI EC
patch could be backported to the current Ibex kernel.

Gnome-Do, which also seems to sometimes enter do_nanosleep has a similar
hanging problem, so that also might be related.

I am using the latest Ubuntu release, Intrepid Ibex, with all the latest
updates installed.

+
+ UPDATE: It turns out that disabling display dimming seems to fix these
+ problems. Even though the display is now set not to dim, it dims
+ anyway, but at least the Power Manager no longer freezes.
