[Bug 1026254] Re: Open with on folders was removed, Ubuntu should consider patching back

2015-03-13 Thread Mark Edgington
One decent existing use-case for this feature is the "baobab" program
(that is useful to a broad user-base, not just "power-users"), which
helps people see their disk usage, and get rid of unneeded large files.
It would also apply to any other application that operates on folders.

Without this feature in Nautilus, a user is forced to (1) locate /
remember the name of the baobab program and run it, and (2) select an
"open folder" item from within the application and navigate to wherever
the desired folder to act on is. This is terribly inefficient in
comparison with just right clicking on a folder that you are already
viewing in Nautilus. The same would apply to any software that is
developed to operate on a folder instead of just a file.

One other argument for this is in terms of consistency -- the way you do
something with a file in Nautilus should be consistent with the way you
do something with a folder -- then there's less to remember about how to
do things.

[Bug 793122] Re: PDF content not rendering due to "some font thing failed", failed to load truetype font - important data silently left out

2012-09-07 Thread Mark Edgington
The pdf in comment #8 renders ok for me -- using evince 3.4.0 / Ubuntu
12.04.

However, I am attaching a pdf file which does *not* render correctly
(with several "some font thing failed" messages on the console). I
guess this is a problem with poppler? (I'm currently using 0.18.4 of
libpoppler-glib8) -- btw this PDF dumps core when opened with xpdf.

[Bug 390816] Re: external monitor output is switched off when closing the laptop-lid when gnome-power-manager is set to blank screen on closing

2010-08-22 Thread Mark Edgington
I don't know to what extent it relates to this issue, but there is a
difference in behavior on my Lucid installation between pressing the
suspend-button, and closing the lid (with the system configured to
suspend on lid-close).

If I have a second monitor connected and active (configured with
something like xrandr --right-of ...) at the same time as the laptop LCD
display, then in the first case (button-press), resuming from suspend
correctly restores the display on both the LCD and external display.
However, in the second case (closing the lid), upon resume, the LCD's
resolution is changed to match the (lower-res) external monitor
resolution, and the screens become identical clones of each other.

[Bug 486074] Re: pdftotext crashed with signal 24 in _int_free()

2009-12-04 Thread Mark Edgington
The problem is only reproducible when trackerd is spawning pdftotext
(i.e. it doesn't happen when calling pdftotext directly from a
terminal), so it seems to be a problem with trackerd, and not pdftotext.
I have attached a valgrind log from running tracker-indexer with it.

But what may be more important is... when running tracker-indexer, I get
the following debug output:

Initializing tracker-indexer...
. (a bunch of normal messages) ...
CPU time limit exceeded (core dumped)

So, I'm not sure what is imposing this time-limit, but this is probably the
cause of this 'crash'.
(in any case, the affected package should probably be changed to tracker).

[Bug 419143] Re: Printing from evince (and perhaps other GTK apps) to PostScript printers is broken

2009-11-27 Thread Mark Edgington
One "workaround" for this which seems consistently to work for me is to
first print it to another PDF file via cups-pdf, and then open the
generated PDF file, and print it (all printing done via evince). This
may mean that a "good" filter is being used by cups-pdf, which might be
able to be adapted to solve the problem here. (?)

[Bug 443050] Re: Intra-document hyperlinks jump to wrong page

2009-11-09 Thread Mark Edgington
I tested it in Karmic with Evince, and when you are in presentation mode

[Bug 443050] [NEW] Intra-document hyperlinks jump to wrong page

2009-10-05 Thread Mark Edgington
Public bug reported:

I have generated several presentation PDFs via pdflatex + the beamer
class, and have noticed a problem when viewing these documents with
okular and evince that does not occur with Acrobat Reader.

Take for example, the PDF at http://latex-
beamer.sourceforge.net/beamerexample1.pdf . When loaded in Acrobat
Reader, clicking on "Our Model of Absolutely No Space Overhead" in the
table-of-contents page jumps (correctly) to page 17 in the document.

If you open the same document with evince/okular and click on the "Our
Model..." link, it *appears* to take you to page 17 (this is the number
which shows up in the page-number entry-box), but the actual page which
is viewed is page 18. If you page-up, and back down, the real page
number of the jumped-to page will be shown in the page-number entry-box
(i.e. 18).

In general (sometimes for the first link in the TOC this is different),
the hyperlinks in the TOC jump to one page further in the document than
they should.

I presume this is a problem with the poppler library (as opposed to
evince and okular), but correct me if I'm wrong.

In any case there is clearly a difference between what Adobe Reader does
and what these poppler-dependent programs do.

Using AMD64 Jaunty (9.04), and libpoppler-glib4 0.10.5-1ubuntu2.2.

[Bug 218361] Re: [Hardy] Evince won't open another pdf from a link within a pdf file

2009-05-28 Thread Mark Edgington
This is still a problem in Jaunty (using AMD64). I have attached a file which
demonstrates the problem.
When the link in the file is clicked with evince (assuming the target --

and the new evince window which is launched contains an error message: "Error

If the same PDF file is opened in Adobe's acrobat reader, it opens the

[Bug 9870] Re: Better spam filtering for evolution

2007-05-25 Thread Mark Edgington
For the record, I am running Ubuntu 7.04 on an AMD64 machine, and use
Evolution to access mail via IMAP. Spam filtering with Bogofilter only
works when a group of messages is selected, and the Message->Check for
Junk menu item is chosen. So, it does not check automatically upon
receiving new mail. I have also tried to set up filters to do things
with new incoming mail, but again, this does not work -- only selecting
messages manually, and choosing Message->Apply Filters will cause the
filters to be executed on the selected messages. I have tried all
combinations of options on the "Receiving Options" account-preferences
tab (e.g. "Apply filters to new messages in INBOX on this server", which
sounds like the right thing), but nothing seems to work.

So, in short, I think that unless this problem (of being able to run
filters/check for spam on new incoming messages) is resolved (am I the
only one experiencing it?), spam filtering will not work (properly or
easily) for Evolution users who have IMAP accounts.

[Bug 94924] Olympus DS-2 voice recorder not recognized as audio-device

2007-03-22 Thread Mark Edgington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

I have an Olympus DS-2 voice recorder, which can record in the WMA
format. It is detected and mounted as a USB drive by HAL. I would like
to be able to play and import files from it in a sound/music manager,
and it seems natural to automatically launch the music-manager when the
device is connected. I have modified 10-usb-music-players.fdi,
including the following entry:

[Bug 81087] error reported when all top-level files in an archive are hidden (dot) files

2007-01-22 Thread Mark Edgington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

To reproduce:
1) Create an archive containing, for example, a single directory ".test" (note
the initial dot)
2) Right-click on the created archive in nautilus, and select "Extract Here"

An error is reported, presumably because the script which moves the
files from within the temporary-extract directory uses a shell wildcard
which doesn't match any files/directories if they are all hidden.

** Affects: file-roller (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed
