[Bug 360177] Re: [Jaunty] Original screen brightness not restored after activity with dim display when idle for MacBook 5.1 when running on battery.

2010-02-22 Thread Matthew Nuzum
This bug also affects me on my Dell Latitude D430 running Lucid as of
Feb 22 2010.

When I'm working I set brightness to 100%. Using the keyboard shortcuts
there are 8 possible values of brightness: 0% (progress bar gone) to
100% (progress bar full) with 6 steps in between.

If I set brightness to 100% and then let the computer go idle while on
battery it dims to a very low level. Then when I use the computer I
expect that the brightness will go to 100% again but instead it goes to
the fourth step (three above 0). I have to press the brighten keyboard
shortcut four times to get the screen back to 100% brightness.

I do not have an option for ambient light in the gnome power manager
(but I do have an ambient light sensor). Covering the sensor seems to
affect how many times I have to use the keyboard shortcut to get back to
100% brightness. Doing a quick test, with the ambient light sensor
covered I had to use the keyboard shortcut 8 times to get to full
brightness.

[Bug 497006] [NEW] Icon to launch says Empathy which is not at all descriptive of the program

On Ubuntu 9.10 UNR the icon to launch Empathy is in the Favourites menu,
making it very prominent. New users have no clue that Empathy is an
instant messaging application. Most of the icons are named in a way that
explains their function, for example, Evolution mail client.

[Bug 497011] [NEW] New account dialog should offer a familiar choice by default

2009-12-15 Thread Matthew Nuzum
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

When the user is presented with the wizard to create their first account
it would be helpful if there was a frame of reference. The first thing
the user has to do is choose if they want Jabber or something else. Even
among people who use Jabber it is not commonly referred to as Jabber
(it's instead branded as their provider's instant messaging service,
such as Google Talk).

Empathy should start the wizard with something the user is a bit more
likely to recognize. Some suggestions are:

  Google Talk
  Yahoo
  MSN
  AIM

[Bug 144453] [gutsy] evince opens taller than the screen, hangs off the bottom

2007-09-24 Thread Matthew Nuzum
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Usually when I open large PDFs, the Evince window is so tall that I
can't see the bottom of it (see attached screenshot). This also means I
can't click the bottom scroll bar arrow. Its hard for me to tell how
tall the window is... it seems to be more than just the height of the
panel, but I could be wrong... maybe evince calculates the full screen
width causing it to be off by the height of the panel.

[Bug 141589] Cannot open multiple gedit windows at once

2007-09-21 Thread Matthew Nuzum
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

In Gutsy: It would be nice to open two editor windows side by side.
However, there is no apparent way to do this with gedit. Each time you
try to launch the program it opens up a new blank tab.

In previous versions of Ubuntu if you switched to a different virtual
desktop you could open a second editor window, then drag it over to the

different editor when comparing documents side-by-side.

[Bug 127964] font rendering problems in Gutsy w/ compiz

2007-07-28 Thread Matthew Nuzum
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm attaching an annotated screenshot illustrating four problems. The
screenshot is an SVG file but I've created it so that it should render
properly in Firefox 2. If it doesn't, you may need inkscape to view it.

Problem #1 (top right):
Fonts in the title bar of applications look ugly. The reason is that it is
white text on a brown background but with a black stroke. My guess is that this
was done to provide contrast since the title bar is sometimes transparent.
However, the way the text is outlined causes it to look dirty, thin, and makes
it harder to focus on.

The solution is quite easy though. Instead of using a black stroke, use
a brown stroke. The same color that the background would be if it wasn't
translucent. If possible, make the stroke wide (say, 5 - 8 px) AND
blurred (don't blur unless its wide). Since the font was chosen
(presumably) to look good against a brown background then use the brown
for the stroke too.

Problem #2 (two circles to the left of #1):
Similar problem, but this time for inactive title bars. Because the title bars
are too transparent, then there is not enough contrast for the text. It makes
it look messy. There is two possible solutions to this. The best solution would
be to heavily blur whatever is behind the inactive title bar. This would allow
you to get a sense of what is behind it, but would soften the edges allowing
the fonts in the title bar to contrast against the transparency. The alternate,
but probably less attractive solution is to outline the fonts (dark grey on
light grey is bad btw) with the light grey color, making the outline quite
thick and blurring it. This effectively reduces the transparency of the portion
of the title bar where there's text.

Problem #3 (bottom left corner):
The fonts on the desktop just don't hold up against their drop shadow. The font
is too thin which reduces contrast and makes it hard to focus. When the icon is
selected, it gets a grey background around the text and the text becomes solid
black, which is far more readable. I realize that the developers never know
what color background the icons are going to be against and need to provide
someway to give the text contrast... I suggest giving the font a little more
weight.

Problem #4 (firefox - near bottom left):
This needs to be a separate bug. Ignore it here.

Problems 1 and 2 are directly related. I think problem #3 is too, but if
not, I can file a separate bug on that one.

[Bug 128312] gnome-terminal keyboard shorcuts are all gone

2007-07-25 Thread Matthew Nuzum
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

In a clean install of Gutsy tribe 3 (and fully updated) gnome-terminal
is quite broken. None of the keyboard shortcuts work. This includes new
tab (ctrl+shift+t iirc), copy (ctrl+shift+c) and paste (ctrl+shift+v).

Also, the default does not have the menu bar enabled, which may not be a
bug, and the default profile is called no name (or something
similarly buggy looking).

Oh, and the background by default is yellow. :-p

If there's a workaround for this before an official release is
available, I'd love to hear about it, as the lack of shortcuts is quite
hindering.

In a clean, fresh install of Gutsy Tribe 3, with desktop effects enabled

[Bug 127622] fitts law problem - panel doesn't extend to extreme top/bottom of screen

2007-07-22 Thread Matthew Nuzum
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In a clean, fresh install of Gutsy Tribe 3 with desktop effects enabled
(the default on my laptop) the extreme top of the top panel and the
extreme bottom of the bottom panel is unusable, which severely hinders
usability of the desktop.

For example, when trying to click the System menu, if you move your
mouse to the top of the screen you can't click the System menu. Instead,
you've got to move your mouse cursor down one pixel or so to be able to
click it.

This is not true for the left and right edges of the panels, which do
properly extend to the edges of screen.

You can also demonstrate this problem by moving your mouse the far
bottom of the screen (assuming you have a bottom panel) and trying to
right click. Nothing happens. Again, the edges work as expected.

The interesting thing is, if you move your mouse over the clock applet
to the very top, you can't click it to make the applet show the
calendar, but the tool tip does appear.

This only happens when desktop effects are on.

[Bug 96497] Evolution icons are wrong

2007-03-26 Thread Matthew Nuzum
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

The icon for Evolution is wrong. It used to be pretty, now its that old
round icon from the ximian gnome days. See attached screenshot. The icon
shown is also the icon used in the Applications -- Internet menu, but I
can't take screenshots of that for some reason.

[Bug 96510] Report a problem icon doesn't match other icons

2007-03-26 Thread Matthew Nuzum
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-artwork

See attached screenshot. The colors and shape of the report a problem
icon differ dramatically from the other icons in the menus, causing it
to stand out in a bad way.

[Bug 88476] cursor for DND-copy and DND-move should differ more

2007-02-27 Thread Matthew Nuzum
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-artwork

When you drag a file, it's cursor changes to indicate that wither the
file will be copied or moved when it is dropped. Right now, the two are
barely distinguishable.

This causes a bit of a usability problem because the default drag'n'drop
action differs depending on if you drop the file on the same or a
different file system.

Here are two suggestions:
for Move, have the cursor change to include an icon representing a document
with a curved arrow point from nothing to the document
for Copy, have two slightly overlapping documents

I'm attaching a *rough* (I think you'll agree that its rough) sketch of
what I'm trying to describe.

[Bug 70106] Clicking panel icon for evolution produces error

2006-11-03 Thread Matthew Nuzum
Public bug reported:

When I click the panel icon in edgy it produces the error Could not
launch application Failed to execute child process evolution-2.0 (No
such file or directory)

When I right click the icon and choose properties, I see the command is
'evolution-2.0' however when I open a command prompt and type
evolution\t the options are evolution, evolution-2.8, evolution-2.2,
evolution-addressbook-export

I did a fresh install of Edgy and then copied my home directory to the
new install. While its possible this came from the old installation, I
doubt it - all of my panel preferences were lost when I logged into
edgy, so I had to re-customize my desktop.

[Bug 47604] Re: Pictures Folder isn't configurable

2006-08-07 Thread Matthew Nuzum
It would be nice to have the ability to configure this. I can confirm
that there is no way to set the folder and there is no clear indication
of what folder is used by default.
