[Bug 1876308] Re: in GIO 2.64.2 (Ubuntu 20.04) smb file attributes corrupted

2020-05-01 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1872476

I have read the explication of Sergio Durigan Junior in bug 1872476 and
I am convinced now that there is a problem in Samba and not in GIO. So I
shall mark this bug as a duplicate of 1872476 now. Thanks, Sergio!

I tried the update in a virtual machine. It seems to work. The files on
the NAS are no more shown as empty folders even if they are mounted via
GIO. But it is not the same machine where the bug had occurred before,
so I must go on testing to be shure.

[Bug 1876308] Re: in GIO 2.64.2 (Ubuntu 20.04) smb file attributes corrupted

2020-05-01 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
It seems to be the same problem as bug 1872476, but there it seems to
affect samba. I found that samba 4.11.7 alone works fine and that the
bug only occurs if the samba shares are mounted with gio mount.
Therefore I suppose it is a gio bug.

Before installing a patched samba version in my system I would like to
know what has been done there. A patched samba can be quite a security
risk.

[Bug 1876308] [NEW] in GIO 2.64.2 (Ubuntu 20.04) smb file attributes corrupted

2020-05-01 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
Public bug reported:

If the samba protocol is reduced to SMB-1 (option client max protocol =
NT1 in smb.conf), in all samba shares mounted with gio mount, the
mounting used by file managers like Nautilus or Thunar, ordinary files
are displayed as empty folders and therefore not usable. The problem
seems to be new in Ubuntu 20.04 (samba 4.11 and GIO 2.64.2) because it
did not exist in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (samba 4.7 and GIO 2.56.4).

In a shell opened by smbclient or in samba-shares mounted via
mount.cifs, in Ubuntu 20.02 all files are displayed correctly and
usable, even when the protocol is reduced to SMB-1 (client max protocol
= NT1 in smb.conf or mount-option vers 1.0). Therefore the problem seems
not to be a bug in samba 4.11 but one in the used GIO version.

[Bug 310598] Re: can't copy or move folders with gnome-user-share

2009-01-29 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
I wonder why this bug is still set invalid in gvfs.

I explaned that you misunderstood what I was doing. I never had tried to
share a file that's already been shared! I only tried to copy the folder
dav://gu...@192.168.1.100:53811/Musik to my home folder. That did not
work, the folder was not found.

It was no problem to copy the same folder from the POSIX compatible
alternative address ~/.gvfs/WebDAV on 192.168.1.100/Musik to my home
folder. That is why I am convinced that this is a parsing problem in the
gvfs frontend for WebDAV.

[Bug 310598] Re: can't copy or move folders with gnome-user-share

2009-01-05 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
I am so sorry. I don't know how to explain what I really mean. The
problem is not half as complicated as what you describe, it is very
simple. I never tried to share a file that's already been shared. I
totally agree with you that this is nonsense!

In the folder Public (or Öffentlich, for it's a german version) in
my home folder there is a folder Musik which contains some mp3 files.
That's all for the server, no shared files are concerned there.

On the client the folder appears with the syntax
dav://gu...@192.168.1.100:53811/Musik. Single files from that folder
can easily copied from that folder to other folders on the client
(downloaded), bot not the whole folder. That's all. But it is not
normal.

Using the other (optional and extra) POSIX compatible access way, the
same folder can be copied with no problems. That's why I think it might
be a parsing problem in the standard Syntax dav://.

In Samba, copying folders with the syntax smb:// does work, so it
must be something else than the double slash that causes the problem.

[Bug 310598] Re: can't copy or move folders with gnome-user-share

2009-01-05 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
Well, English not beeing my native language, I certainly did not explain
very well. Sorry.

The problem is not at all sharing a foreign share. It is a client
problem.

On the client, the shares are published with the syntax dav://. If
you simply try to copy one of the shared folders to the client (which is
nothing but a normal download), it does not work, and you get the error
message not found. Copying (downloading) single files in the same way
works fine.

It must be a gvfs problem on the client. In gvfs there is always a
second way to access published folders (it is the same for samba
shares). You can find them in a hidden folder .gvfs in your home
directory. There the access is possible without the double slash via
~/.gvfs/WebDAV on IP. If this way is used to access the shared
folders, they can be copied or moved to the client without any problems.

That is why I still think that gvfs is affected.

Since gnome-user-share is meant to be a tool for everyone, the default
way must work without any sofisticated workarounds!

[Bug 310598] Re: can't copy or move folders with gnome-user-share

2009-01-04 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
This might be a bug in the backend of WebDAV in gvfs.

Accessing the share with the default syntax dav://... all folders can
be found and opened, but not copied or moved. Using the alternate acces
by the hidden folder ~/.gvfs/WebDAV on IP, every folder can be
copied without problems.

I can't test whether this problem is general with WebDAV or specific to
gnome-user-share.

The problem does certainly not affect GnomeVFS, but gvfs. This was a
typo; sorry!

[Bug 228161] [NEW] connect to a server - Windows share does not work

2008-05-08 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber

In Hardy, when I try to connect to a Windows- or Samba-Share on a Server

After entering my password, I get the error message can't display,
share not mounted (free translation of the german error message...).
But an icon appeares on the desktop for this share. By opening this

anonymous connections without write permissions.

[Bug 164971] Re: Gnome freezes after moving or deleting many files

2007-12-06 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
There have some new important details been observed since, even if we
could not get a useful logfile yet:

When audio preview is activated, but not working for there is no esound
installed, a new pipe is opened whenever the mouse is moved over a
symbol of a mp3-file (You can see that with lsof -c nautilus). That can
lead very quickly to a huge number of open files, and Nautilus will
freeze quite soon.

After deactivating audio preview the number of open pipes does not
increase any more by moseover, but it still does increase by handling
mp3-files, so that the same bug still can happen, but later than before
and not so often. Obviously there are other programs (perhaps players or
plugins) who do open pipes.

Even if this bug is not a problem of Nautilus itself, it is very
ennoying, and new users will loose confidence in Ubuntu when observing
such problems! It should absolutely be fixed soon with a official
developpers patch!

I still can't get a logfile. The last time that Nautilus has freezed I
had handled mp3-files again. The system monitor showed Nautilus still
running continiously with 83% CPU and 381 MB memory. That's enormous,
usually it uses about 10 MB.

After shutting down and restarting Nautilus everything was normal with
10,2 MB of memory used by Nautilus and Nautilus sleeping when there is
no action.

I turned off audio preview, and the bug happened again. So I can be
quite shure that it is not a problem of audio preview and that it has
probably nothing to do with Bug #125739.

Yet it was always after handling a lot of mp3-files that I did observe
the bug. Could it be possible that the files are opened for identifying
and not well closed afterwards?

(Would it be possible to alter the name of the Bug, for actually it is
not Gnome but Nautilus that freezes?)

[Bug 164971] Re: Gnome freezes after moving or deleting many files

2007-11-27 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
It seems to be a pure Nautilus problem indeed. It is not Gnome but
Nautilus that freezes. Restarting Nautilus is sufficient to get it
working for a while, there is no need to restart the X-Server as I did
first.

There is no ordinary program crash; Nautilus freezes rather slowly: To
begin, the specific icons for music files are replaced by neutral
symbols, then Nautilus refuses to open files and the above mentioned
error-message appears. At last even open windows can't be closed any
more. The Gnome-panels continue to work. So Nautilus can be shut down
and restartet by system/administration/system-monitor.

It seems to me that Nautilus behaves as if there really were too many
open files, even if there are not. I suppose that it forgets to close
files correctly after handling them.

I think the problem is new in Gutsy (Nautilus 2.20.0). I had never
observed it before.

[Bug 164971] Re: Gnome freezes after moving or deleting many files

2007-11-27 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
I don't think this logfile is very instructive. It is the actual one,
even beeng rather old (07-11-19). The problem had appeared several times
since, not creating a debug file. It seems to me that Nautilus not
really crashed but that there were really too many open files, even if I
had not opened any.

I noticed the bug always when I managed audio-files, specially mp3. That
for I would not be surprised if it turned out to be a problem of audio
preview, opening files to identify them and not closing them correctly
afterwards. That could lead to a big number of open files.

In Bug #125739 a similar problem arrised from the beginning and not only
after some time of handling files. Maybe there were much more files in
one folder.

[Bug 43900] Re: Too many open files

2007-10-25 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
After deleting and/or copying several files from one partition (FAT-32)
to an other partition or directory, I get this message : copying
impossible, too many files open, even if there are no other files open.
Later on Gnome refuses all other File-operations and does no more
recognize the kind of the files. It seems to me that Gnome does not
correctly close files after copying or deleting.

After restarting Gnome with CtrlAltBackspace, Gnome works fine
again till the same problem occurs again. I can not find out if this is
a special FAT-32 problem.

[Bug 124437] Re: Format profile active but not choosable in drop down list

2007-08-01 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
I think this is not a bug but a codecs problem. Both packages
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse and lame must be installed to make
the mp3 profile appear and work.

[Bug 84007] Re: Cannot edit audio profiles without closing the list

2007-08-01 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
I have got no problems any more to install the mp3 profile and to rip mp3 filse
since I have installed the fix from this page:
http://www.auer37.dsl.pipex.com/Packages.html.
Are you sure your friends have installed not only the lame package but also the
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse package? Both of them are needed,
otherwise it happenes just what you describe as the mp3 profile bug.

[Bug 84007] Re: Cannot edit audio profiles without closing the list

2007-07-18 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
Sorry. Everything works fine now, thanks! (no need to investigate...) I
just did not know that I had to reinstall all (!) packets from
http://www.auer37.dsl.pipex.com/Packages.html and not only the i368 .deb
package!

2007-07-17 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
I installed the i368.deb package from
http://www.auer37.dsl.pipex.com/Packages.html. The bug is still there,
no way to edit audio profiles. Not possible to close any window without
a kill-command. Is that the package you mean?

[Bug 84007] Re: Cannot edit audio profiles without closing the list

2007-06-29 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
Sebastien, I am sorry, but I can't get along with this easy
workaround. The dialog can be closed after closing Gnome edit audio
profiles, but the all changements of attributes and additions of modes
are not accepted by Sound Juicer, everything stays as it had been
before. So this bug really is a blocker!

I am doing my best to wait patiently, too. But, please, don't let us
wait forever!

[Bug 84007] Re: Cannot edit audio profiles without closing the list

2007-06-29 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
Thanks, Bruce!

If it makes you want to fix this bug, then perhaps all this moaning
was not so wrong! Even if it is not a security risc (I do agree with
Sebastien), this bug is important, and it might well stop somebody using
Ubuntu. Sound-Juicer is the standard application for ripping CDs to MP3
players, and just that does not work! The workaround described above is
not easy, and I am not even shure it really works (see comment of
Sergio).

Good luck! But don't forget to sleep the night anyhow!

2007-06-29 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
Sorry, Sebastien.

You are right, and I don't want to demotivate anyone. Be sure that I
recognize and estimate the very good work you and all the maintainers
do! And I am sure, the others think the same way. I'll try to be more
patient.

Thanks for your effort!

[Bug 103420] Re: Editing profile window is unusable unless Edit GNOME Audio Profiles is closed

2007-06-11 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 84007 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/84007

Sound-Juicer does not accept any changements or new profiles when the
window Editing profile $profile is closed after closing the window
Edit GNOME Audio Profiles. That for it is absolutely impossible to add
or change profiles!

[Bug 115928] Re: access via samba denied to nautilus network browser in feisty

2007-05-23 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
I open a window with the network browser in the same way as I used to do
in Edgy and as I always do in Windows:

click on 'network':
   - window with symbol 'windows network' appears
double click on symbol 'windows network':
   - window with the symbol for the Domain/Workgroup appears
double click on the Domain/Workgroup symbol:
   - window with the shares of the selected server appears
double click on a personalized share (hd partition FAT32 mounted in
/media/Daten, owned by myself, uid = 007):
  - acess denied !

In Edgy a password demand had followed at this place, and after entering
the username and the samba password, the access to ther share had been
free for rw. This password demand did never happen in Feisty.

After removing the restriction uid = 007 for this partition in
/etc/fstab on the server a read-only access becomes possible without
password, but rw does not work.

In the logfile I found, that the access to the share had only been tried
as nobody and never with my identity. For user 'nobody' this behaviour
of Samba is correct.

Using connection to server instead of the network browser and entering
the address of the share allowes to enter username and password and to
establish a correct access to the share. Mounting the share on the
client with username and password also is possible. That proves that
it's not a Samba problem.

[Bug 115928] access via samba denied to nautilus network browser in feisty

2007-05-21 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Gnome Network Browser versucht unter Feisty nur als nobody auf Samba-
Freigaben zuzugreifen. Bei persönlichen Freigaben erfolgt keine
Passwort-Abfrage, nur access denied. In Edgy war der Zugriff über die
Passwort-Eingabe noch problemlos möglich gewesen.

in Feisty Gnome Network Browser only tries to acces samba shares as
nobody. For personalized shares there is no more password-request but
only access denied. In Edgy there had been no problems in accessing
personalized shares by entering the samba password.
