[Bug 805789] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with signal 5 in _XError()

2011-09-26 Thread Michael Kofler
For me, it happens in Parallels Desktop about 30 sec. after login. With
unity-2d.

Basically the same as in 11.04 in VirtualBox :-(

Some things never change ...

[Bug 756882] Re: Unity mysteriously loses theme

2011-04-19 Thread Michael Kofler
I have the same problem when using natty (all updates installed as of
today) in Virtual Box 4.0.4 (Windows), using the classic desktop. gnome-
settings-daemon crashes about 30 sec. after login, no matter whether the
vbox guest additions are installed or not. (The following .xsession-
errors is with guest utils.)

.xsession-errors says:

I also had random problems with gnome-settings-daemon on real hardware
(with closed nvidia driver) in beta 1, but they seem to have dissapeared
now. However, I am using Unity on this machine, not the classic desktop.

[Bug 558469] Re: nautilus-connect-server: mounted shares are lost at logout

2010-04-15 Thread Michael Kofler
Sorry for the incomplete report. It's Lucid with all updates as of April
15th. I just re-tested with a new user. All shares I setup with
nautilus-clonnect-server are lost at logout and have to be re-configured
at the next login.

PS: Right now you can only test this for shares without password,
because of a bug in gnome-keyring:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-keyring/+bug/552375

It is impossible to setup a share with passwords if you try to save the
password in gnome-keyring.

2010-04-15 Thread Michael Kofler
I can also confirm this bug. It does NOT happen on a freshly installed
beta 2. It happens only after installing all updates. Not storing a
password as described in #6 gets you around this error.

is possibly a duplicate of this error.

[Bug 558469] [NEW] nautilus-connect-server: mounted shares are lost at logout

2010-04-08 Thread Michael Kofler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I can setup a connection to a windows or samba share with nautilus-
connect-server. However, the connection is lost at logout. The next time
I login I have to connect again, supplying all infos again. In previous
Gnome/Ubuntu versions, the icon for the connection stayed on the desktop
and could be re-used after logout/login.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-04-02 Thread Michael Kofler
Is it only me who finds the form of the minimize and maximize icons
irritating? The first thing I do after (re-)installing Ubuntu is
deleting the lower panel and adding the windows list to the upper panel.
Thus, the minimize button (arrow down) no longer points to the window
list. More than once I wrongly clicked on the maximize button (arrow up)
when I wanted to minimize the window.

Mac OS X uses the symbols - and +, which can't be confused.

Another option would be a small and a large rectangle.

(I won't discuss the stupidity of window button placement here, as this
already has been done in abundance here. The whole discussion is a clear
sign that fundamental GUI changes should be made much earlier in the
development process ...)

[Bug 537227] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon dies on first (auto-)login

2010-03-11 Thread Michael Kofler
Public bug reported:

I am testing Lucid using VirtualBox on a machine with a lot of RAM (8
GB). Rebooting is very fast (about 10 seconds).

I have configured auto-login. At the first login, the Gnome desktop
looks ugly, because gnome-setting-daemon dies. If I log out and log in
(now manually), everything works fine. I can also manually start gnome-
setting-daemon. I have this problem only with VirtualBox, not with real
hardware. Is it possible, that my startup/boot process in a VirtualBox
machine is perhaps too fast for the gnome-settings-daemon? (i.e. gnome-
settings-daemon is started before some other processes have ended etc.?)

[Bug 216104] Re: Hardy - Nautilus shortcut to Samba Share reports wrong password, double icons

2009-03-06 Thread Michael Kofler
it is fixed in Jaunty *and* in Intrepid, but not in Hardy

basically, it is fixed since Gnome 2.24

the problem is: Hardy is LTS and is promoted for enterprise and business
use; this is a serious flaw for inexperienced desktop users; therefore,
it should be fixed also in Hardy (backport the Nautilus fix or
whatever); if Hardy were not LTS, this bug could have been closed a half
year ago

[Bug 216104] Re: Hardy - Nautilus shortcut to Samba Share reports wrong password, double icons

2008-05-20 Thread Michael Kofler
I can also confirm this bug (8.04 with all updates installed as of
2008-05-20). It is annoying, as it prevents to pre-configure the desktop
for non-skilled users. I need to add a Windows share which stays on the
desktop, so other users can simply open this share without knowing
anything about network details.

PS: I remember the days when people started switching to Ubuntu because
'it just worked'. These days are gone, obviously. All recent Ubuntu
release had quite some bugs, but in 8.04 there are simply too much. Esp.
for an LTS release. Very disappointing.

[Bug 227721] [NEW] F-Spot import dialog is crippled

2008-05-07 Thread Michael Kofler
Public bug reported:

in the F-Spot import dialog you can only choose a complete volume, not a order;
this is brain-dead! I have a 250 GB NFS volume with ca. 4 image files, but
I want to import only a small subset (my private photos)

F-Spot should allow to select any order to import (use the gnome
standard dialog for it!)

I fail to understand how a program so incomplete and full of bugs could
become the default image administration tool for Ubuntu 8.04 (LTS!); the
Nautilus integration is a desaster, the German localization is almost
non-existent etc. etc.

gThumb lacks shine and hype, but at least it works

[Bug 208467] Re: Camera Device button "Open F-spot Photo Manager" doesn't work

2008-05-07 Thread Michael Kofler
This bug appears not only affect in the case you insert a SD or CF card.
It also applies to all cameras which behave as storage device (not PTP).
Attaching such cameras (in my case: Casio Exilim Z600) gets you into the
same troubles as described above (new volume icon --> Nautilus with
broken button 'Open F-spot Photo Manager'). My guess is that this bug
affects quite a number of Ubuntu users.

[Bug 23230] Re: Browsing as root from disks manager

2006-04-20 Thread Michael Kofler
> don't run the programs with gksu but use the sudo mode instead

I have not tested the patches, but I cannot believe this makes any difference
to the security risk imposed by disks manager; 'Browse' will still start
Nautilus with root privileges, no matter whether these privileges are obtained
by gksu or sudo

[Bug 23230] Re: Browsing as root from disks manager

2006-04-20 Thread Michael Kofler
I have tested Ubuntu 6.06 flight 6 and was quite dissapointed as nothing has
changed

status quo: as a non-root user, I see icons for all windows partition on my
desktop; however, clicking on a NTFS icon gives an error (no rights to see
contents); clicking on a FAT icon gives only read access; file names with
none-ASCII characters (such as äöü) are displayed wrong because of encoding
problems (latin1/ANSI --> utf8)

to be able to write into FAT partitions or to read NTFS partitions I have to
use the disk manager; it runs with root privileges; its 'Browse' button starts
Nautilus with root privileges; and opening any document from within Nautilus
starts the program (i.e. OpenOffice, Gimp etc.) also with root privileges

what needs to be done to make access to Windows partitions easier (at least
from my point of view):

(1) change /etc/fstab during installation so everyone (or at least the first
ubuntu user) may read NTFS partitions and everyone (or at least the first
ubuntu user) may write FAT partitions; also add options for the correct
characterset for FAT partitions

/dev/hda1 /media/hda1 vfat umask=0,utf8 0 0
/dev/hda2 /media/hda2 ntfs umask=0,utf8 0 0

or

/dev/hda1 /media/hda1 vfat uid=1000,gid=1000,utf8 0 0
/dev/hda2 /media/hda2 ntfs uid=1000,gid=1000,utf8 0 0

(2) reduce the disk manager to a pure administration tool and get rid of the
'Browse' button

---

a final note for Dapper+1: current versions of ntfsmount allow many NTFS
*write* operations; Knoppix 5.0 shows how far this already goes; future
versions of Ubuntu will also have to include this feature, which will makes the
whole setup even more difficult
