[Bug 1862264] Re: Browsing smb share is painfully slow when mounted via "gio" (compared with "mount")
Reported upstream as issue 2062 (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/glib/issues/2062) ** Bug watch added: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/glib/issues #2062 https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/glib/issues/2062 ** Description changed: + Reported upstream as issue 2062 + (https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/glib/issues/2062) + Ubuntu 18.04 LTS here, fully updated (as of late Jan 2020). TEST #1: To establish a baseline/expected behavior, we first mount an SMB share via mount.cifs and time an ls command: $ sudo mount -t cifs -o username=pablo //myserver.example.com/share ~/mnt/share $ cd ~/mnt/share/some/dir $ time ls ... approx 320 files ... real 0m1,080s user 0m0,008s sys 0m0,005s $ sudo umount ~/mnt/share TEST #2 Now we do the same via gio mount: $ gio mount smb://myserver.example.com/share cd /run/user/1000/gvfs/smb-share\:server\=myserver.example.com\,share\=share/some/dir $ time ls ... same 320 files ... real 0m28,999s user 0m0,013s sys 0m0,032s Enumeration of files is about 29 times slower when mounted via gio mount than via mount -t cifs. TEST #3 Now for the real weird: while using the gio-mounted folder, we now time ls IN COMBINATION WITH SOMETHING ELSE (can be strace ls, ls|wc etc...): $ time ls | wc 321 3239804 real 0m0,546s user 0m0,006s sys 0m0,004s Note that this is almost TWICE AS FAST than the "fast" mount of test #1 and about 53 times faster than "slow" test #2 ! The expectation is that Tests 1 and 2 should have similar timings, not differing by a factor of 30 or so. More disturbing, there is no good reason why tests 2 and 3 differ by an even bigger factor of 53: They use the same underlying infrastructure which test 3 proves is adequately fast. And yet, we get this slow down in test 2. As a final note, these benchmarks are a distilled version of the original real-life motivating scenario where a Java-based program would simply take tens of minutes to display the same list of 320 files when mounted via gio mount and a second or so when mounted via mount -t cifs. The same timing difference is of course visible in any file manager. Hope this helps PS: several old/ancient bug reports exist for a similar issue and I deliberately copied the title from one of them (#259771) PS2: may or may not be relevant: The remote server is a VM running Windows 7 (yes, I know...) and the connection was made via VPN (Ubuntu stock SSTP). PS3: Another data point (server is now a Synolgy NAS, not a Win7 VM) $ gio mount smb://nas.example.com/share2 $ cd /run/user/1000/gvfs/smb- share\:server\=nas.example.com\,share\=share2/another/path $ time ls ... 528 subdirs approximately ... real 0m45,075s user 0m0,013s sys 0m0,058s $ time ls | wc - 5281631 10893 + 5281631 10893 real 0m0,911s user 0m0,003s sys 0m0,005s Factor is about 50. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to glib2.0 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1862264 Title: Browsing smb share is painfully slow when mounted via "gio" (compared with "mount") To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glib2.0/+bug/1862264/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1823793] [NEW] Font scaling not working on gnome startup
Public bug reported: The font text scaling setting is not being loaded on gnome startup. I have font text scaling set to 1.25. After updating mutter to package version 3.32.0-1ubuntu1 the text scaling setting is not loaded any more when starting gnome. Steps to reproduce the issue: 1) Set your font scaling factor to something other than the default '1'. This can be set, for example, either by using "Gnome tweaks" or with gsettings: settings set org.gnome.desktop.interface text-scaling-factor 1.25 2) You'll see that the top bar text gets larger. 3) Log out and log in. You'll see that the top bar text and text in general has been reset to the default '1'. The setting is still set to '1.25', but visually it's '1'. If you set the value to something else, it gets applied correctly, until you log out. This worked as expected on package version 3.32.0-1. I wonder if this patch listed in the CHANGELOG could have somehow created this side effect: debian/patches/x11-Add-support-for-fractional-scaling-using-Randr.patch: - X11: Add support for fractional scaling using Randr ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 19.04 Package: mutter 3.32.0-1ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.0.0-8.9-generic 5.0.1 Uname: Linux 5.0.0-8-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.10-0ubuntu25 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Mon Apr 8 13:42:39 2019 InstallationDate: Installed on 2019-04-08 (0 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 19.04 "Disco Dingo" - Alpha amd64 (20190408) ProcEnviron: TERM=xterm-256color PATH=(custom, no user) XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: mutter UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: mutter (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug disco -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1823793 Title: Font scaling not working on gnome startup To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1823793/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1210910] [NEW] Mouse settings don't work in some sessions.
Public bug reported: In Raring, in some sessions, the mouse and touchpad settings are not what they're supposed to be: too slow, scrolling doesn't work as well as two-finger tapping to open context-menu and keyboard cancellation when typing. Rebooting solves the problem, but it comes back sometimes. I can't reproduce it, as it seems random, but I'm in one of those sessions right now. My idea comes one day late as the deadline was yesterday :( OpenITP is looking for projects to fund. [Bug 1033219] [NEW] Main Gimp window looses focus every time an option is used
Public bug reported: In order to use the Gimp menu, the main window has to be selected. However, after running almost any option from the menu, the focus does not return the main window but changes aleatory to one of the other windows (either Toolbox or Layers). Those windows do not have menus, so you neither can use Alt+ to get to the menus nor take advantage of the HUD. I could say that this happens with any option that launch a dialog window. Re: [Bug 882307] Re: [list-view] After copying text from a rename entry, file copy menus items are broken
João In the bug I'm talking about, you ARE able to copy the file, but the option will look like it doesn't work, because it's gray instead of black. I'm unable to reproduce it now and I can't reboot (it doesn't always happen), but there's a clear way to do it, and that's how I originally reported it: 1. Save a file to a Ubuntu One synchronized folder. 2. Wait for the file to upload and the green checkmark to appear. 3. Right click the file and click Publish. 4. Right click again and look for the "Copy web link" (or something like that) menu item. The item will be gray, though it works. 2012/5/11 Joao Leonor <882...@bugs.launchpad.net> > Hi Pablo. > > I did has you said and I'm still unable to reproduce the bug in 12.04 > I even tried other steps, but I was always able to copy/paste the file. > > Cheers. > > -- > You received this bug notification because you are subscribed to a > duplicate bug report (956031). > https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/882307 > > Title: > [list-view] After copying text from a rename entry, file copy menus > items are broken > > Status in Application menu module for GTK+: > Triaged > Status in Nautilus: > New > Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu: > Triaged > Status in “nautilus” source package in Precise: > Triaged > > Bug description: > When renaming a file in nautilus, in list view, if you copy the > highlighted part of the name, after this you're unable to copy/paste files > This only occurs in list view > > Steps to reproduce: > - Open Nautilus > - Chose List View > - Right click a file and chose Rename. [Bug 975662] [NEW] Opening a new folder from Unity's Dash brings the window unfocused, kills keyboard-only navigation
Public bug reported: Note: I don't know if this is a bug in Nautilus or in Unity, but I'm reporting it as a nautilus issue just to get the logs into the bug. Steps to reproduce: 1. Have Firefox opened. 2. Open the dash (by taping Super) and search for a folder's name. 3. Navigate to it (if necessary) and type Enter (or Return). 4. Nautilus will open in that folder, but you can't do anything in it with the keyboard and has to use the mouse. What should happen instead: 4. Nautilus should open with focus, so you could search a file by typing or navigate using the arrow keys. Workaround: You can Alt-tab to the new opened folder and then it gets the focus. But this is annoying and kills the convenience of using the keyboard. [Bug 956031] [NEW] "Copy web link" item from the Ubuntu One menu is gray even when active
Public bug reported: Note: I'm reporting this as a nautilus issue only so that apport will collect some info that might be useful from my computer. This is probably a Ubuntu One issue, but as I've seen a bug that looks exactly like this before on nautilus (but with the "Paste" item), I'll leave it like this. Also, this is not a problem with radiance theme or something like this. It happens to Ambiance too. The problem: When you click "Publish" in a Ubuntu One syncronized folder's file and the item gets published, the "copy web link" item doesn't look like it's activated, even though it is and can be clicked. This is confusing and not obvious. I'm attaching a screenshot. Notice that the option "Stop publishing" is active ("Parar a publicação" in portuguese) but the "Copy web link" option is gray (even thougth I can click it). [Bug 902095] Re: Copying remaining time estimative is not accurate when doing multiple copies
** Description changed: When you copy two files (or two set of files) from or to the same disk separately, so that you have two copying progress bars and estimates and the one copying process is dealing with a amount of data larger than the other, nautilus calculates the estimate as if both copying processes were going to be running simultaneously until copying is complete, which is not true. Once the smaller set of files finishes, the larger one will - get it's full speed back and finish sooner than the first estimate + get its full speed back and finish sooner than the first estimate actually predicted. My suggestion: Nautilus should be aware that the second file copy is slowing the first one down, so it should calculate the first's estimate as something like: + . Although this approach may look too simplistic, I think it's better than the rather pessimistic approach we're using right now.
