Sorry, but why did you remove the my reported regression concerning the

What is the solution now? Totem gets some workaround, but the bug in
Unity/Appmenu remains, leaving VLC and who knows how many other

Ok, I read about restoring subtitle functionality by switching to
fullscreen in #1448234, which gave me an idea. There is nothing wrong
with totem or vlc. Yet again its Ubuntu's appmenu that botches up
applications. After uninstalling appmenu everything works as expected.

[Bug 1447224] [NEW] Regression: Unable to select audio or subtitle tracks

2015-04-22 Thread Peter Würtz
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Ubuntu 15.04 neither Totem nor VLC are able to select
different audio tracks or subtitles when playing videos with multiple
tracks. This is a regression from Ubuntu 14.10 where playback of such
files was working as expected. I tried this on multiple machines running
15.04 and with various media, mostly MKV videos but also AVI videos or
simply DVDs.

On Totem the expected functionality in the application menu is missing
or the menu item is just empty.

On VLC the menu items are present but always disabled.

[Bug 1024912] [NEW] Totem refuses to decode videos not supported by vaapi, Nautilus crashes

2012-07-15 Thread Peter Würtz
Public bug reported:

I tried installing gstreamer0.10-vaapi for gpu accelerated video
decoding. Generally, vaapi works but it only supports mpeg2, h264 and
vc1. So one would guess that a video application should just fall back
to the standard decoders when trying to play an unsupported video.

Totem seems to have trouble with this. First, the thumbnailer isnt
working for non-vaapi videos:

$ /usr/bin/totem-video-thumbnailer -j no-vaapi-support.mp4 test.png
libva: VA-API version 0.32.0
Xlib: extension XFree86-DRI missing on display :0.
libva: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva: Trying to open /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/nvidia_drv_video.so
libva: va_openDriver() returns 0
totem-video-thumbnailer: 'no-vaapi-support.mp4' isn't thumbnailable
Reason: Media contains no supported video streams.

Another problem is that when opening the properties for unsupported
videos in nautilus the application just freezes and crashes.

[Bug 34813] Re: gedit fails to save files over smbfs/cifs

2011-12-02 Thread Peter Würtz
Ok this is getting nasty. The latest experience with this bug (Ubuntu
11.10) when trying to edit/save a textfile is a dialog popping up,
telling me that gedit is unable to save the file. If you decide to close
the editor for some reason now, the file is completely gone. You didn't
just loose your changes, you lost the complete text file. There might be
an invisible ~backup file around, but from a users point of view, the
file is gone.

Can we please make that bug critical?

[Bug 390662] Re: nautilus shortcuts doesn't work at first press

2009-07-29 Thread Peter Würtz
I think this bug is related to my experience that nautilus sometimes
ignores copy/paste shortcuts. I couldn't really reproduce this bug until
I found this:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1219031

After (a) opening a new nautilus window, or (b) navigating to a new
directory in an existing nautilus window, there is often — but not
always — a brief pause of a second or two where nautilus will not react
to certain keyboard shortcuts.

Indeed, if you perform these operations quickly (keyboard), nautilus
misses some keystrokes from time to time, although I don't know a way to
exploit this behavior with 100% success.

[Bug 34813] Re: gedit fails to save files over smbfs/cifs

2007-11-28 Thread Peter Würtz
Guys, please actually read the stuff others wrote before...

As I said, the problem with gedit is the save routine. It relies on moving
the file that is being edited while the filehandle is kept open. This works for
most filesystems, but it fails on cifs and sshfs (by the way, it works with
smbfs). There are 2 ways to fix this:
1. do not move open files
2. fix support for moving open files in cifs and sshfs

I would just change the save procedure and go with the first solution,
but the gedit devs don't like the idea of changing their way of saving
files because any other solution would require a full copy of the text
file (for backup) or open up racing conditions if someone else tries to
edit the same file.

[Bug 49594] Re: Bonobo-activation-server sometimes is not killed after session restart, leading to many unexpected problems

2007-09-20 Thread Peter Würtz
I experienced a problem that looks related to your report. When starting
a gnome session for the second time, the gnome-panel fails to load
several applets. Instead, I'm getting a error message for each applet. I
tried deleting .gnome, .gnome2, .gconf, .gconfd and killing gconfd-2,
but only a complete reboot fixed the panel applets. When gracefully
logging out from the gnome desktop or just killing X, the problem occurs
on the next session again.

Recently I discovered the bonobo-activation-server running in the
background. After killing this service, the broken panel loads just fine
again.

I assume this is the same kind of bug, although the problem arises in a
different way.

[Bug 34813] Re: gedit fails to save files over smbfs/cifs

2007-05-26 Thread Peter Würtz
I disagree, this bug renders Ubuntu/Gnome useless in situations when
working with other workstations in a domain.

Having a central file server for user and group data is very common,
like pam-mounting a users home when logging in or just using a common
cifs share for a group of workers.

From: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance
High - Has a severe impact on a small portion of Ubuntu users

In my opinion, being unable to save textfiles is a severe impact, this bug
should be marked as high.
This bug is pending long over one year now and we are talking about a text
editors vital function!

in line 670, gedit tries to rename the file to a backup file... like
moving testfile to testfile~

if (rename (saver-priv-local_path, backup_filename) != 0)

I checked local_path and backup_filename, they are correct. I also
wrote a small test application using rename() from stdio.h and renamed
the same files on the mounted cifs filesystem, which works.

I'm not a gnome developer, could someone help me out here please? I
assume the rename() function is not the rename function from stdio.h,
does gnome implement its own rename?

Gedit opens a file, moves the original file to a backup file while keeping the
file open, and finally deletes the backup file if you choose not to keep
backups.
The rename method sets errno = ETXTBSY, so moving the original file fails.

I don't think moving/deleting open files on purpose is a good idea,
although it works for most linux file systems. But its definitely a bad
idea for network file systems like sshfs and cifs, which of course
fails.

[Bug 88213] Re: Feisty does not mount encrypted partition

2007-03-12 Thread Peter Würtz
@Martin

in my comment i wrote

The mapper device is set up correctly by gnome-mount.
As root, i am able to mount the mapper device without
any problems. However, gnome-mount does not mount
 the filesystem.

so yes... it works using manual mount...

[Bug 88213] Re: Feisty Herd 4 does not mount encrypted partition

2007-03-10 Thread Peter Würtz
I'm also getting this error, when investigating the mount problem by
calling gnome-mount manually.

Timeout for waiting for cleartext device... Exiting.

The mapper device is set up correctly by gnome-mount. As root, i am able
to mount the mapper device without any problems. However, gnome-mount
does not mount the filesystem.

I tried mounting the mapper device using gnome-mount... don't know if
that is supposed to work at all... nevertheless... here is the output
trying to mount /dev/mapper/luks using gnome-mount.

** (gnome-mount:7786): WARNING **: Given device '/dev/mapper
/luks_crypto_5ed4dcfd-85ac-4e33-a899-83f61162d26f' is not a volume or a
drive.

** Summary changed:

- Feisty Herd 4 does not mount encrypted partition
+ Feisty does not mount encrypted partition

[Bug 88213] Re: Feisty does not mount encrypted partition

2007-03-10 Thread Peter Würtz
By the way, I'm running an up to date installation of feisty (10.03.).
So this bug is surely not restricted to Herd4 - changed the title

** Changed in: gnome-mount (Ubuntu)
   Status: Needs Info = Confirmed
