[Bug 491483] Re: after recent update which included xorg, xserver etc causes low-graphics mode error at start

2009-12-06 Thread Philip Muskovac
Ok, a comment how I understand this issue:

failsave-x only supports use cases where gdm is not DISABLED. Setups where gdm
is used or isn't installed aren't affected. So...
although I understand that the patch described above works, I get the feeling
this is fixed at the wrong place.

First of all, why does failsave-x even assume that gdm and kdm aren't
installed at the same time? There are users that I know that like to
have both gnome and kde installed. And even if that wasn't the case,
with the current startup check

start on stopped gdm EXIT_STATUS=[!0]

what happens for kubuntu users that have a broken X Server? Kubuntu
isn't supported?

Second: Why does a 'Disabled' status justify an exit status !0? In that
regard both gdm and kdm are broken since they both have the same check.

IMHO this should be fixed in the failsave-x upstart script so that we
have proper support for both gdm and kdm (failing or not).

[Bug 491483] Re: after recent update which included xorg, xserver etc causes low-graphics mode error at start

2009-12-06 Thread Philip Muskovac
@Selenia:

what happens:

k/ubuntu boots
upstart finds gdm.conf and tries to start gdm
upstart finds kdm.conf and tries to start kdm
upstart finds failsave-x.conf and tries to start failsave-x
gdm finds out that it's not the chosen WM and fails with exit status 1
kdm finds out that it's the chosen WM and continues
failsave-x finds out that gdm failed with exit status != 0 and continues

result: failsave-x and kdm tboth try to start and failsave-x is faster.

Now who is responsible for that...

Here's a debdiff for karmic-proposed that makes the failsave-x upstart task
abort if gdm isn't enabled.
Can you guys test it by editing your /etc/init/failsave-x.conf to look like
this:

start on stopped gdm EXIT_STATUS=[!0]
stop on runlevel [06]

script

[ ! -f /etc/X11/default-display-manager -o $(cat /etc/X11/default-
display-manager 2/dev/null) = /usr/sbin/gdm ] || exit 0

exec /etc/gdm/failsafeXServer

[Bug 491483] Re: Since failsave-x was enabled in karmic it starts if gdm is disabled and kdm is used

2009-12-06 Thread Philip Muskovac
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

Using Ubuntu/Kubuntu 9.10 on Toshiba Laptop with ATI radeon HD 3650

Today morning I did updated the system with updates available.

Following is the recent log entry in the Software update module in KDE.

  Installed: ureadahead, ureadahead
  Updated: x11-common, sreadahead, xserver-xorg-video-all,
xserver-xorg-input-all, xserver-xorg, xorg, x11-common, sreadahead,
xserver-xorg-video-all, xserver-xorg-input-all, xserver-xorg, xorg

After this update I get Ubuntu running in low-graphics mode error at
the boot time and If I press cancel it boots me upto the normal login
  screen.

How to get rid of the this error?

Also I loose the com positioning (desktop effects), I need to manually
  resume the same. (ALT+SHIFT+F12).

  Please resolve urgently.

  Thanks, Manish

Edit: check this post as well for various experience on this particular issue:
  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1343261
+
+ Edit: this is caused by failsave-x starting if kdm is used and gdm is disabed
since gdm will fail with exit status !=0 and thus triggering failsave-x. So
this affects all users that use kdm while having gdm installed as well and kdm
starting slower than failsave-x (they both race to start X first).
+ To fix this make sure that failsave-x checks that gdm is enabled before
assuming that X is broken.

[Bug 405006] [NEW] [karmic] gdm doesn't allow to input password after pressing alt+_key

2009-07-26 Thread Philip Muskovac
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

In the new gdm you need to press alt+_key to get to the
language/keyboard/session selections since tab doesn't bring you there
if you wan't to change them by using your keyboard. But once you do
that, it's impossible to input a password since the password input field
cannot be reactivated neither by keyboard nor by mouse.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at

bug as a bug in brasero.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the

[Bug 401089] Re: Nautilus crashes when i try to open a Original CD with a new tab

2009-07-18 Thread Philip Muskovac
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or more challenging to
deal with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport
report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic
retracer.

Note: You might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 395765] Re: [karmic] nautilus crashes when opening a sftp url

2009-07-05 Thread Philip Muskovac
Sebastien: I will do that once you tell me how to get apport to trap the
crash. I have apport enabled all the time and usually it does it's work,
but here it doesn't seem to notice that nautilus crashed. That's why I
used gdb and ubuntu-bug.

Any ideas?

[Bug 395313] Re: gdm 2.26 kills or switches away from active X sessions on upgrading

2009-07-04 Thread Philip Muskovac
My 2 cents:

The first upgrade gave me a new login screen and I stayed logged in like
everybody else.

Now for the second one... I don't think It killed the session but simply logged
out. At least aptitude that was running in yakuake didn't get killed until all
updates were processed and firefox had time to close itself (Didn't tell me it
had crashed).
What I actually saw was getting kicked out to tty7 without X - and after a few
seconds gdm came back up.
