[Bug 767427] Re: [i965gm] GPU lockup

2011-05-15 Thread PresuntoRJ
I have been trying to get reproduce the bug to capture dmesg,
i915_error_state and even backtraces from my gdm session, but I am not
sure what triggers it yet.

So far, it seems that it freezes when the screensaver was running for
some time BECAUSE IT HAD TURNED MY SCREEN OFF due to energy policy...

I had since disengaged the energy control option to never turn my screen
off again, so far it has not frozen my system again. I suspect that this
could be the root cause, but I am not sure how to prove it, or what
packages could be involved to further the investigation.

It also seems to happen only on my systems with intel video boards
(Mobile GM965/GL960 Lenovo Laptop and Mobile 945GME Express Asus
netbook).

[Bug 773907] [NEW] the login wont show my selected picture

2011-04-30 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I have, several versions ago, set a picture of me to be shown at the
login screen (via About Me), but on Natty, about 50% of the time, it
shows only the default "msn-like" generic image... not sure what
triggers it, not sure how to reproduce, but the other 50% of the time,
it shows my photo just fine.

is there a log file I can post? a test I can try?

[Bug 768578] [NEW] gdm froze when anything but Unity went to fullscreen (even screensaver)

2011-04-21 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

My system keeps freezing if I leave it alone for a long time, usually
more than thirty minutes, enough for the screensaver to kick in, and
many subsystems (desktopcouch-se, zeitgeist-datahub, ...) becomes zombie
processes, rendering the box unusable... I have found out it is not a
screensaver specific issue, since I can have anything in full screen
(like a banshee session, playing some music, or gedit with a text) and
force the screensaver to never load, that after a while (again, more
than thirty minutes), the box will freeze.

I cannot kill X with Ctrl+Alt+Bckspc (which I have set previously), but
I can still get to a shell via Ctrl+Alt+F2, then I can get log files,
kill gdm-binary, and startx (startx wont start Unity completely,
complaining I dont have enough hardware to run it, and get me to a
Ubuntu-Classic session)

At least I have managed to post this bug with apport.

This happens every single time I am AFK with anything but Unity
fullscreen

[Bug 767427] [NEW] [i965gm] GPU lockup

2011-04-20 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Not sure if its a gdm problem, since it could also be in xorg or
something else. I keep my system up-to-date while testing (just run an
apt-get upgrade) and have been testing banshee when the screen went
black ... I could not regain access to the system locally with
Ctrl+Alt+Bckspc (set to kill X), or even Ctlr+Alt+F2... I had to ssh to
this box, but killing gdm or xorg was not enough ... eventually I gave
up and rebooted it, so I could post this bug report.

[Bug 756829] [NEW] there should be a easy way to reach the configuration GUI in Natty Unity

2011-04-10 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I am not sure if gnome-control-center is installed by default on Natty
but it, or some similar package, should... and it should be stick to the
bar in the left from get go, cause there is no way for new users to
locate the Admin and Preferences icons like it used to in Ubuntu-Classic
(gnome), cause they cannot guess what to search for, and alphabetically
is NOT a good way to browse for them

gnome-control-center at least acts like a Control Panel (from Windows)
and have a "familiar" effect with the bonus of keeping the adjusts in
one place, unless the "all over the place" is the way to go for Ubuntu
now

Re: [Bug 555539] Re: evolution calendar cranshed when adding task on a particular time

2010-04-06 Thread PresuntoRJ
Sorry, but I think you have missed to understand what happened here...

There is no .crash file to be sent because apport has nothing to send
automatically, because it never detected an error, because the session
has crashed so completely, even apport was halt.

I am on lucid, fully up-to-date, not yet stable release, soon to be
released, and apport is always on (and can get a bit annoying trying to
send errors all the time anyway).

I had to restart the session with ctrl+alt+bkspc every time, and apport
never even mentioned something to be sent, thats why there is no .crash
file.

This seems to me not only a real bug, but a perfectly valid one, since
the crash was so major that the trustworthy systems we have learned to
rely on (apport) to help the development of Ubuntu haven't even blinked.

I will try to locate a relevant file in the /var/crash, but have in mind
it might not be there, which does not automatically means that nothing
went wrong and that is not a valid bug report.

[Bug 555539] Re: evolution calendar cranshed when adding task on a particular time

2010-04-04 Thread PresuntoRJ
It might be uglier than I have reported a short while ago... since then,
I have been testing a relatively conservative way of trying the same
thing, to avoid the crash...

I have then pressed the New button on the tools bar... it has also
crashed the evolution at least, my session is still responding this
time

I have been wondering if the previous crashes had something to do with
the way evolution links its schedules in the gnome calendar which
appears when you click on the clock in the top panel (not sure what the
name of that applet also)...

[Bug 555539] [NEW] evolution calendar cranshed when adding task on a particular time

2010-04-04 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I am not sure if it really an evolution problem or some other related
package...

When I have clicked on an empty time of a particular date to try to
create a new task for that schedule, not only evolutions turned gray,
for ever, but my session has frozen (only the mouse still moved and I
could login to textual consoles via Ctrl+F1) forcing me to
Ctrl+Alt+Bkspc (which I have enabled in me gnome keyboard settings)

There was also an evolution-data-server something to report via apport-
bug but it refused to repport (could be related, cause it has shown up
after the crash)

I can reproduce the error at will, since it happens every single time I
try it (and I to need to terminate the entire gnome session every time)

I can try some tests or send some log files if necessary, but I am not
sure what to try... please, let me know if its necessary

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 545617] [NEW] gnome-terminal closed kept a fg job running

2010-03-23 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

I was running iptstate under sudo in a gnome-terminal tab to monitor
some activities, and when I have closed those terminals (after my tests)
I have notice a 50% or so use of the CPU while the system was supposedly
in stand by (mostly idle, on the nautilus was opened)

by itself to use that much CPU on my system, even worse, since I had
already closed it and it was not supposed to be running any more any
way; I think

I had run it under sudo, which could be the root cause of the issue...
not sure.

this behavior never occurred in my system, though it looks very similar
to bug #234753

after I had it $ sudo kill (pid) it died quietly and the system was idle
again

I am able to reproduce this at will, cause it happens every time I do it
again in my system...

I am not sure with logs or tests to do, but feel free to ask and I will
sure try them out and send whatever necessary.

[Bug 462368] [NEW] There is something wrong with volume control in karmic

2009-10-27 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Not really sure if that's the right package, but since I have upgraded
to karmic (a few weeks ago) it got my sound extremely low, almost
inaudible.

It detects my hardware properly (nvidia) but even if I max it out (the
150% trick is neat by the way) it was almost not present anymore.

I had no problem before since 8.10 in the desktop.

I was worrying more with bug that prevented me to do some work, but is
eventually got to my nerves.

The only work around that seemed to work was that I had to install the
alsamixer and actually raise the master volume there, it was bellow 5% !

I believe there should be at least one way to raise the master without
this trick... I assume it may affect other users after release day.

If you need any log files, configuration, hardware description, please
advise.

It's been kept fully up to date hourly with the following script (reboot
whenever necessary):

#!/bin/bash
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get check
sudo apt-get update -o Acquire::http::No-Cache=True
sudo apt-get -y autoremove
sudo apt-get -f -y install
sudo apt-get -y upgrade && sudo apt-get -f -y install
sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade && sudo apt-get -f -y install
sudo apt-get -y autoremove && sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get clean

Using this sources.list file:

lei...@amz:~$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ karmic main universe restricted multiverse

And here is my lshw output, by the way:

[Bug 144660] login screen wont accept TAB as it used to

2007-09-24 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

In the recent past, I could after the user name to type the
password, or if I so preferred,

Now I have to press as the only option again, as it used to
bemany many versions ago (before Dapper, not sure when it has changed).

It actually differs from Windows and other OSes now, and it looks like a
step back for no particular reason.

It does not crash, or seams a security issue, but smells like a
misbehavior that should be fixed at the very least.

Best if Ubuntu keep improving rather the degenerating back to its more
simple roots. ;-)

2007-06-10 Thread PresuntoRJ
It fails when I past the command on the shell too.

It fails if I copy the file to the /home folder too.

It does not fail in every single file format... it might be a codec
problem, since it worked with MPEG-2 set differently

The file worked under other OSs though (Both MacOSx and WindowsXP, both
with most current codec pack and VLC player).

VLC crashes unde my ubuntu too (probably related).

[Bug 106635] [apport] gnome-panel crashed with SIGSEGV in gtk_file_info_get_is_folder()

2007-04-14 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I am using a Fully up-to-date Feisty Beta on several machines, but the
gnome-panel started freezing in the Compaq Armada M700 (so far, only on
this system).

I still do not know exactly what is going on here, and I have not been
able to reproduce at will yet.

When it freezes up, it wont come out unless by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Bkspc

[Bug 99293] [apport] planner crashed with SIGFPE when resizing a task

2007-03-30 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: planner

I was able to reproduce in several ways, but it most commonly happens if
you already have a set of tasks, try to link two tasks (one as the other
predecessor) with the default zoom on the Gantt view.

If the one you click to drag the arrow was created with a very small
profile due to a very short duration (i.e. 1h), the mouse usually get
stuck in the resize mode (right white arrow with a limit), the
application freezes and than crashes.

It happened more often on the 0.14.1 version but I still got at least
three times in less than two hours using the 0.14.2 (currently available
on Feisty beta).

The only known workarround is to avoid linking such tasks with the
mouse. Either edit the interdepency manually (FF, FS, etc) or do the
predecessor step prior to resize the task to a shorter period.

It often works fine if you keep the button pressed to actually resize
the task duration.

It happend on four of my machine: a Compaq Armada M700 PIII 850Mhz 512M
working with a Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse running Feisty, a Dell
Precision 220 Workstatio Dual PIII 700 MHz 256M working with a Dell
Optical Mouse running Edgy, a Dell Optiplex GX 260 P4 1.8GHz 256M
working with a Microsoft Wireless Mouse 2.0 running Edgy and a Compaq
iPaq PIII 733Mhz 512M working with a Microsoft Stark Mouse running
Dapper;

None of those equipments seem to crash using other GUI applications
(Gnome or Kde) regarding Mouse attributes, movements or commands besides
this reported issue with Planner.
