This is a high impact bug. Any idea when the upstream will be available
to install for us peasants?

[Bug 2039722] Re: "Large Text" accessibility option cannot be turned off. Text is too large

2023-10-18 Thread Rich McAllister
I can reproduce this with Ubuntu 23.10.1. It is necessary to select
large text while running the installer (I did use the new installer.)
The key difference is on a host installed without selecting large text
in the installer, "gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface text-
scaling-factor" will reset the factor to 1.0. On a host installed
*with* selecting large text in the installer, it will reset the factor
to 1.25. Presumably the installer is somehow setting the default value
in the installed image, but I don't know how to check that. Also
presumably, the Accessablity menu implements "turn on large text" to
mean "set text-scaling-factor 1.25" and "turn off large text" to mean
"reset text-scaling-factor". So once the default value is set to 1.25,
turning off is effectively a no-op. I do not know whether the bug here
is in the installer -- that it shouldn't push the install value into the
defaults of the image -- or in the accessibility dialog, which maybe
should implement "turn off large text" as "set text-scaling-factor 1.0".

[Bug 1744946] Re: Special characters change the width of trailing/leading space character in Gedit (and medit)

2018-01-23 Thread Tao Rich
** Description changed:

If I paste a special character - say from the Character Map - into Gedit
or medit in Ubuntu 16.04 into the middle of a line, then the space
characters directly after the special character display with a
- "compressed" character spacing/display until the behaviour is
- "interrupted" by a standard text character.
+ "compressed" character spacing until the behaviour is "interrupted" by a
+ standard text character.

So the basic problem result is that the uniform monospacing of
characters gets out of alignment on lines above and below the lines with
  the special character problem.

I posted a detailed question on AskUbuntu and the prevailing opinion was that
I should log a bug report.
Another user with different versions was easily able to reproduce the same
issue .

  https://askubuntu.com/questions/986258/why-do-special-characters-change-
  spacing-following-space-character-in-gedit-or-m

Please see that post for full details, worked example, and screenshots.

  Additional comments:

  * As stated above:
  - running Ubuntu 16.04

  * This affects:
  - Gedit 3.18.3
  - medit 1.2.0

I am aware that it is thus not strictly a gedit issue, and probably
- affects multiple Gnome editor under multiple Linux variants but Gedit is
- my favourite text editor and Ubuntu is my favourite Linux so I thought I
- would start here.

[Bug 1447224] Re: Regression: Unable to select audio or subtitle tracks

2015-06-11 Thread Rich Daley
Thanks! I think where it got confusing is that those of us who reported
this against VLC got added to this defect when someone decided they were
the same thing. I will follow that other case.

+1 to pwuertz's comment. This is a wider issue than totem so marking it
as resolved when there's a workaround only for totem doesn't help those
of us with issues in VLC.

[Bug 1296275] Re: PTP Cameras not working on 14.04, works flawlessly on 12.04

2015-05-22 Thread rich painter
I would like to join in by reporting that my Canon PowerShot SX20IS will
also not function on the USB for my Lenovo T530 running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
64bit updated. It works fine in my windows vista and xp machines.

lsusb shows
Bus 003 Device 006: ID 04a9:31e4 Canon, Inc.

gtkam reports the proper model is detected but reports "cannot
initialize it"

gnome3 automounts it on the desktop which when double clicked the
contents are empty.

ls -l /run/user// in part shows:

[Bug 1450935] [NEW] Rhythmbox crashed when I added to a large Play Queue

2015-05-01 Thread Rich Fiekowsky
Public bug reported:

Rhythmbox just crashed on my Ubuntu 14.04 system on a Dell GX620. The Dell
mimitower has the integrated sound and 4 GB RAM.
The action that apparently provoked the crash was: I dragged and dropped three
files from the Music list (in the main pane) onto the Play Queue icon (in the
left pane). It was playing (not paused) at the time. Earlier in the day, I had
pointed rhythmbox to my audio directory (in Preferences). RB had finished
adding the tracks to the Music list. But afterward, I had made a few changes in
some of the subdirectories of my audio directory.

At the time, Chromium was using a great deal of RAM, and tabs were open
which had played video with sound.

After the music stopped, apport displayed that there was not enough free
memory to analyze and report the crash. System Monitor showed over 2 GB
free.

I realize my usage is a little extreme:

 - System monitor showed the rhythmbox process was using 255 MB of memory
before apport killed it.

 - My audio directory contains over 50,000 tracks

 - There were 125 tracks in the Play Queue at the time. I had dragged and
dropped them there, one at a time or a few at a time, from the Music list.

[Bug 1327295] Re: Can't resize "S.M.A.R.T. data" window

2014-12-08 Thread rich painter
I am running Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS with Gnome3 64 bit on a Lenovo T530.

I have the same problem with the English (US) presentation. I want to
amplify the bug report...

1. The SMART data popup is not moveable and must be.
2. the popup is not resizable and must be.
3. the individual fields are nearly all truncated.

All of these problems prevent even seeing any of the useful SMART data.

image is attached.

[Bug 1207812] Re: [FFe] Update libimobiledevice to support iOS 7, fix Trust Prompt Looping

2014-08-10 Thread Rich Wales
NOT working for me (Ubuntu 14.04, iPhone 4S running iOS 7.1.2).

I'm not getting the trust loop problem, but I am getting "Unhandled
Lockdown error (-20)" and cannot mount the iPhone in order to upload
photos into Shotwell.

I've tried the suggestion to make the /var/lib/lockdown directory
publicly read/writable, but this did not help.

Is there a separate bug for this lockdown problem?

[Bug 980710] Re: black font on black background in xfce terminal

2012-09-29 Thread Rich Winslow
For the command line inhibited that read this thread; on my Ubuntu 12.04
/ XFCE system I was able to get Evolution's colors to be correct by
using Synaptic package manager to install the "shimmer-themes" package.
It includes the albatross, bluebird and greybird themes. Select one of
these themes and Evolution follows the theme and looks good. Reading
elsewhere it appears that Evolution wants a GTK3 theme. Later I
installed some other GTK3 themes from gnome-look.org and Evolution is OK
with any of them as well.

[Bug 763159] [NEW] Sharing a folder in an NT drive produces incomprehensible error

2011-04-16 Thread Rich Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

To reproduce, open an NT formated drive (like this external), then right click
share, Create Share.
Result: Folder not shared, user is given incomprehensible message and now way

Re: [Bug 683856] Re: Clicking on the far-right hand side of a maximized window does not scroll

2011-01-11 Thread Rich Jones
I assume that this is happening because of the border around the window. The
border is pretty ugly (again, not present on OSX), but necessary in GTK
right now because that's how window resizing is done. I'd suggest that
instead, window resizing be done with an _invisible_ border (ideally with
the same default radius as the shadow in Compiz) and that the rendered
border be completely independent, and not present on maximized windows.

[Bug 369498] Re: 32bits gtk and glib modules not found in ia32-libs

2010-12-01 Thread Rich Wohlstadter
We just ran across this today.

problem: 32bit gtk2 apps that link with
/usr/lib32/libgio-2.0.so.0.2400.1 will throw these errors:

/usr/lib/gio/modules/libgiogconf.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
Failed to load module: /usr/lib/gio/modules/libgiogconf.so
/usr/lib/gio/modules/libgvfsdbus.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
Failed to load module: /usr/lib/gio/modules/libgvfsdbus.so
/usr/lib/gio/modules/libgioremote-volume-monitor.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
Failed to load module: /usr/lib/gio/modules/libgioremote-volume-monitor.so

I did a 'strings /usr/lib32/libgio-2.0.so.0.2400.1' | grep 'gio/module'
and see that the 32bit library is linking to /usr/lib/gio/modules
instead of /usr/lib32/gio/modules so its trying to incorrectly load the
64bit libraries.

[Bug 625793] Re: Keyboard layout automatically changes + 100% CPU usage [updated]

2010-10-05 Thread Rich Wales
I, for one, am *not* willing to sacrifice the keyboard layout indicator.
If a user is using multiple layouts, the indicator is essential, and
removing it is (IMO) a significant regression from Lucid (where the
layout indicator worked just fine).

So, then, is this a bug in gnome-settings-daemon? Or in indicator-
applet? Or some combination of the two? And what additional debugging
information would help at this point to isolate the problem and allow it
to be solved?

[Bug 531173] Re: New Lucid keyboard layout indicator does not indicate current layout

2010-10-04 Thread Rich Wales
>From the perspective of a naive (or not-so-naive) Ubuntu user who is

keyboard layout-related task, all they will notice is that the indicator
icon breaks when they "upgrade" to Maverick.

If there is some reason why the Lucid indicator applet can't be
transparently upgraded and must instead be reinstalled in Maverick, this
needs to be clearly documented (or, better, fixed).

[Bug 531173] Re: New Lucid keyboard layout indicator does not indicate current layout

2010-10-03 Thread Rich Wales
Just on a wild guess, I launched "Add to Panel" and added the "Indicator
Applet" — and a US flag (corresponding to my currently active keyboard
layout) showed up in the panel along the top of the screen.

Although (re-)adding the indicator applet seems to have fixed the
problem, there is still the question of why the indicator applet became
broken in the first place.

2010-10-01 Thread Rich Wales
If this bug report is "invalid" w/r/t the indicator application, please
advise what needs to be done in order for the problem to be addressed.
It would (IMO) by a very bad thing if this problem were to be neglected,
and if Maverick were to be released without anything being done, on
account of the issue getting stuck in the middle of a finger-pointing
contest. I'm not criticizing the "invalid" status label as such — if
the bug doesn't belong here, then it doesn't belong here, no matter how
serious it is — but it's got to belong *somewhere*, and it sounds to me
like it's an issue whose classification is not at all obvious to the
users who are suffering from it.

[Bug 531173] Re: New Lucid keyboard layout indicator does not indicate current layout

2010-10-01 Thread Rich Wales
I installed a set of flag icons (us.png, etc.) in ~/.icons/flags, and I
enabled /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/indicator/showFlags in
gconf-editor, but this did no good — in fact, it made the static
"keyboard" icon go away entirely (replaced with a generic "I can't find
any icon to display here" placeholder).

I'm seeing this error in Maverick beta. The layout indicator (including
using flags as described above) works perfectly for me in Lucid. It's a
regression, not a "wishlist" item, since the layout indicator feature
worked previously but is now broken.

I don't know why the fix that was reportedly released didn't fix the
problem on my Maverick beta system, but it didn't.

"aptitude show gnome-settings-daemon" on my Maverick beta system reports
version 2.32.0-0ubuntu1.

[Bug 625793] Re: Keyboard layout automatically changes

2010-09-30 Thread Rich Wales
@divan: Could you clarify exactly how you set up your keyboard layout
indicator to show country flags?

One problem I've been having (at the same time as this random layout
switching bug) is that I am no longer seeing any indication of my
current keyboard layout at all. All I am now seeing is an icon that
looks like a keyboard, with a cable trailing off into the distance
behind it — and this icon stays the same no matter which layout I am
using.

I'm not certain if this indicator problem is related to the random
layout switching problem or not, but (at least for me) both issues arose
at the same time, so I'm suspicious. I've reported the indicator
problem separately as bug #650166.

[Bug 650166] [NEW] Layout indicator is just a keyboard icon, doesn't identify current layout any more

2010-09-28 Thread Rich Wales
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

I'm using multiple keyboard layouts. The current layout for the
currently active window used to be identified with an abbreviation
(e.g., "USA" or "Rus") along the top of the screen.

When I went from Lucid to Maverick beta, however, the layout indicator
was replaced with a generic "keyboard" icon. I can see/change the
current layout by left-clicking on this keyboard icon and viewing a list
of radio buttons, but the old automatic indication of which layout is
currently active is gone.

When using several keyboard layouts, this indication was extremely
helpful, and the loss of this feature is (in my view) a serious
regression which is likely to delay or prevent my adoption of Maverick.

[Bug 627392] Re: Keyboard menu missing from the panel

2010-09-28 Thread Rich Wales
I see an icon that looks like a little keyboard, but it doesn't indicate
the current keyboard layout any longer (via an abbreviation like "USA"
or "Rus") the way it used to. I can do a left-click on the icon and get
a list of radio buttons allowing me to see/change the layout, but
nothing shows the layout automatically. This, in my view, is a serious
regression from Lucid to Maverick.

[Bug 596596] [NEW] Battery meter is erratic

2010-06-20 Thread Rich Barfoot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I'm using 10.4 LTS Netbook Edition on a Gateway LT2104U netbook.
Occasionally, and seemingly without reason, the battery meter suddenly
reads 1.0 percent left and the message appears that the system is going
to hibernate right now (and quickly does so). This happens regardless of
how full the battery actually is (it's happened with a fully charged
battery, and with a half-charged battery). It appears to happen only on
battery power and not when plugged in to AC power. When this happens, I
can immediately turn the system back on and use it normally. Since this
seems to happen completely at random, I cannot provide specific steps to
reproduce it.

[Bug 459647] Re: Cannot change mouse cursor theme when compiz is enabled

2010-05-09 Thread Rich Adams
@SabreWolfy: Yes, I confirm that your changes will be lost the next time
the compiz-core package is updated via a normal upgrade.

To stop this you can just put the package on hold [echo "compiz-core
hold" | sudo dpkg --set-selections]. You can confirm it's new state with
[dpkg --get-selections | grep compiz-core]. While on hold, the package
will still be displayed in update manager or in apt-get/aptitude, etc,
but it won't be automatically selected. To remove the hold just do [echo
"compiz-core install" | sudo dpkg --set-selections].

Alternatively you could create a diversion using dpkg-divert, but since
I imagine this bug will be fixed sometime soon it's probably easier just
to put it on hold until then.

@JohnathanHard: Yes, I'm also seeing VLC using the normal white-cursor
instead of the themed one.

[Bug 459647] Re: Cannot change mouse cursor theme when compiz is enabled

2010-05-08 Thread Rich Adams
If you can't wait for this to be fixed upstream, here's a step-by-step
guide of how to fix based on d.a.'s description (thanks d.a.!) for those
not familiar with modifying and re-building things from source.

1. Make sure you have apt-src installed [sudo apt-get install apt-src].
2. Checkout the compiz-core source [sudo apt-src install compiz-core], this may
take a while.
3. Find the relevant file, and modify it accordingly. [sudo vi
compiz-0.8.4/debian/patches/013-add-cursor-theme-support.patch].
3a. Modify lines 133, 135 and 136 to change "core.xml.in" to "core.xml.in.in"
and save.
4. Rebuild the package [sudo apt-src build compiz-core], this may take a while.
5. Install compiz-core over existing version [sudo sudo dpkg --install
compiz-core_0.8.4-0ubuntu15_amd64.deb] (note I'm on 64-bit system, so filename
may be different for you, but you should only need to replace the core one, not
the others).
6. Refresh compiz. I just did Alt+F2 [metacity --replace], then Alt+F2 [compiz
--replace].

..and you're done! Mouse cursor and size should now reflect what you
have set in your preferences.

Massive thanks to d.a. for figuring all this out!

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-04-01 Thread Rich Wales
I still say that placement of the buttons on the left is wrong.

But if you absolutely insist on doing this, there needs to be a user-
visible option in the preferences GUI to allow someone to reposition the
buttons via a check-box. Expecting people to launch gconf-editor from
the "Run Application" window and type an arcane configuration string is
not at all user-friendly. Expecting people to find out that this is
what they need to do (such as by searching the bug reports or the online
help facility) is user-hostile.

[Bug 421326] Re: Genre should not be Enabled by Default or Moved

2010-03-12 Thread Rich Jones
That's not an argument!

How in the world could "Rock/Pop" be more useful in terms of
identification than the _name of the person who is going to be singing
to you_ ??!! If it is still included, why should it be given such
priority? - at least move it! And why would it be "Unknown" - it is my
library, this is all the music I added, I know what I'm listening to. I
don't think that's an appropriate example.

As I mentioned upstream:

"It's because the genre information doesn't directly pertain
specifically to the song.

It's an issue of order of importance. Title-Artist-Album-Genre is descending in
terms of importance. Title-Genre-Artist-Album doesn't have any order - it is
nonsensical."

Ex, iTunes: http://www.theater-pro.com/content/images/itunes.jpg

I think that the funniest thing about this is that even on their OWN
screenshots page, they have changed the default behaviour because it is
so stupid and ugly: http://projects.gnome.org/rhythmbox/screenshots/rb-
auto-playlist.png

I'm surprised there is actually resistance to this.

unacceptable behavior, especially when the fix is simply to give the

[Bug 472232] Re: Invest applet leaves border on desktop background

I found an issue with the window hint in the investment list window. For
an unknown reason when using the WINDOW_TYPE_HINT_DOCK hint the window
manager leaves a frame shadow after the investment list window is
closed. Changing the hint to WINDOW_TYPE_HINT_TOOLBAR resolves this
issue.

[Bug 473510] [NEW] totem play + audio problem combo

2009-11-03 Thread Rich Norman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Audio problem occurred shortly after upgrade

test: System -> pref -> sound -> sound effects -> bark
result: repeatedly 'barks' would eventually sound like when a 'space invader'
defender gets hit.
thought: dead Mobo audio, buy new sound card

test: put in new audio card
result: repeated 'barks' good. solution solved?

Problem: totem seems to have no audio
As long as 'sound' app is running, totem has audio and plays at normal speed.
Once 'sound' app is closed, totem cuts audio, plays video until end
upon replay, video/mp3 is at least twice normal speed, no audio
on replay from that, video dead stops.

pause/unpause no effect
re-opening 'sound' app also have no effect

closing totem and restarting (with 'sound' app running) works
fine...again

Here is it not making sense (the default):

Here is a more sensible alternative (but will be a slightly harder patch):

I think #2 is the simplest and easiest solution right now.

** Description changed:
