You can mount the drive you want to write to with the -o sync option and that will write all data directly to the drive, so that the file reporting is accurate, though it is slower and can cause premature ageing in solid state devices. In Ubuntu 13.10 instead of gvfs using /run/user/USERNAME it changed to /run/user/USERID.
