I also see this in a variety of gnome 3 desktops (classic, shell and
cinnamon). Aesthetically annoying...

[Bug 351122] Re: gthumb doesn't work with gphoto (was please disable gphoto2 backend for Jaunty)

2009-12-06 Thread Richard Kleeman
Spillz,
I tried your app and followed your directions. Unfortunately it ultimately did
not work. Here is what happened:

1) I plugged in the camera and Ubuntu asked which application I wanted to open.
Yours was listed and I chose it.
2) The camera was listed in the left panel and I selected it to import from.
3) I clicked the browse button and the app communicated with the camera (I saw
the camera communication light go on).
4) This state lasted for about 3-5 minutes with no thumbnails appearing. After
that period, the right panel displaying the Picture directory blanked out. The
communication light on the camera went out and no thumbnails appeared.

I should add that I am still able to access photos as follows:

1) When Ubuntu asks which app to open it also offers unmount. I selected that.
2) Open digikam and select import from the appropriate camera.
3) Wait 3-5 minutes while the app communicates with the camera
4) All the thumbnails appear in reverse chronological order.

The Camera is a Sony Cybershot DSC-H2.

[Bug 351122] Re: gthumb doesn't work with gphoto (was please disable gphoto2 backend for Jaunty)

2009-11-23 Thread Richard Kleeman
I take your points. I would make two points in response:

1) My camera takes a very long time to mount for some reason. If I don't mount
it and allow
digikam to access using ptp it still takes a while but not as long. Why the
long delay?
Is it the fact that the usb connection is slow or something else. The contrast
with a usb stick is striking.
I plug that in and the file system is virtually instantaneously mounted and
available.

2) Isn't it rather strange that so many apps are having problems with a ptp
mount? Are these
cameras so rare that the upstream devs are just ignoring this problem or are
these projects
not very active?

[Bug 351122] Re: gthumb doesn't work with gphoto (was please disable gphoto2 backend for Jaunty)

2009-11-10 Thread Richard Kleeman
This problem is also an issue for digikam as well and has been for several
releaeses
including the present one Karmic

In order to get my Sony DSC-H2 working with digikam I must unmount it from
the desktop so that PTP works in Digikam,

I have a basic and possibly naive question:

Why are cameras that use PTP being mounted at all when many photo apps need
the device unmounted to function?

Surely this is a gvfs issue if none of the usual apps can handle these
devices in mounted state...

[Bug 351122] Re: gthumb doesn't work with gphoto (was please disable gphoto2 backend for Jaunty)

2009-11-10 Thread Richard Kleeman
That's fine and I hope digikam (an excellent application otherwise) also
takes care of this issue but color me confused:

Why would you mount a PTP camera at all? Surely the backend should distinguish
between cameras with
usb mass storage access and those with ptp access and act appropriately i.e.
only mount the camera in the first case...

Am I missing something?

Please excuse the pushy tone but I just wasted 2 hours researching this
problem and it has existed for at least a year now in Ubuntu.

[Bug 172435] Re: [hardy] login hangs after upgrade to xorg 1.4

This bug can be closed. I reinstalled gutsy and upgraded to hardy using

switched to hardy very early in the hardy development cycle and used
aptitude to update and then upgrade. Some config files must have been

[Bug 172435] Re: [hardy] login hangs after upgrade to xorg 1.4

2007-12-08 Thread Richard Kleeman
I tried the amd64 livecd for hardy alpha 1 with interesting results. The
initial screen with various options came up with no problem and I was
able to navigate options with arrow and function keys. However when I
selected *any* particular option using enter on the keyboard the cd
light started flashing but the system just hung. This occurred for ALL
options in the menu and also occurred if I allowed the 30s to run down
without intervention from the keyboard.

[Bug 172435] Re: [hardy] login hangs after upgrade to xorg 1.4

2007-12-07 Thread Richard Kleeman
The bug is triggered in a straightforward way: X starts and the usual gdm login
screen appears. After the input of username and password the gdm screen stops
responding and nothing occurs. I am still able to go to a console using
ctl-alt-f2. I have attached the syslog and Xorg.0.log files.

[Bug 32621] Re: Movie tests as requested

2006-04-05 Thread Richard Kleeman
Crashes occur typically for all external session launches but do not
consistently. As I recall they occur the first time the browser is launched but
not the second time. I will recheck this more carefully if you would find it
useful

[Bug 32621] Movie tests as requested

2006-02-23 Thread Richard Kleeman
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32621

Affects: totem totem-gstreamer-firefox-plugin (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Tested the movies from

http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/media/large/
with totem firefox plugin and all possible gstreamer plugins installed (good
bad ugly and multiverse). All movies work perfectly with mplayer (codec test).

Results:

Work Perfectly:

axisallies.mov
gravity.mpg
shihad.mpg

External Totem session launched:

bullet.vob
dolby.vob
matrix.avi
sincity.mp4
startrek.vob
starwars.mkv

Sound fails for the vob files in the external player. With the external
totem player there were often browser crashes as well.
