You are correct. However, it was previously marked as duplicate of a bug
in ubuntuone-client which was causing a Nautilus crash. The stack traces
attached by Cristophe probably caused apport or someone to mark it as a
duplicate of that bug incorrectly. I've unset the duplicate. Sorry.

[Bug 403130] [NEW] All my desktop icons were rearranged

2009-07-22 Thread Rodney Dawes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I just upgraded to Karmic, and upon first log-in discovered that my
desktop icons had all been rearranged. This is terrible behavior. I
expect my icons to remain where I had previously put them. It seems that
if I arrange them again manually, they will stay where I put them, but I
have a lot of icons on my desktop, and I shouldn't have to rearrange
them again.

[Bug 403130] Re: All my desktop icons were rearranged

2009-07-23 Thread Rodney Dawes
I'm pretty sure these are separate issues. I want my icons to remain
aligned. Having "Keep Aligned" does not re-order my icons, but simply
keeps them aligned to the grid, rather than being placed at arbitrary
points. I had this option enabled in Jaunty as well, and I do not care
to disable it. What happened, was that after upgrading to Karmic, it
appears that Nautilus did a one-time "Clean Up by Name" action, which is
not what I ever want to do.

Re: [Bug 403564] Re: Incorrect recall warning for Lenovo T61

2009-07-23 Thread Rodney Dawes
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 402287 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/402287

The recall warning is not a new thing. My laptop did in fact have a
battery recall. However, it was about 2-2.5 years ago, and my battery
has already been replaced. And I got the recall warning then, did the
recall and told the notice to leave me alone. I haven't gotten such a
notice until upgrading to Karmic, presumably because of the switch to
DeviceKit, and how it and g-p-m have regressed from HAL a bit.

[Bug 405825] [NEW] rhythmbox-metadata keeps aborting

2009-07-28 Thread Rodney Dawes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

A few days ago I tried to import some new MP3s into my library. However,
import keeps failing. It appears that rhythmbox-metadata continues to
abort on the songs, and the UI tells me there was a GStreamer error and
I should file a bug, without any useful information. The new songs
display metadata info fine in Nautilus and Totem, and play fine in
Totem. I've also successfully synced them to an iPod using gtkPod, but
Rhythmbox keeps failing. Attached is a screenshot. Here is a backtrace:

Re: [Bug 405825] Re: rhythmbox-metadata keeps aborting

2009-07-31 Thread Rodney Dawes
I'm unable to obtain a backtrace with gdb or valgrind, as when I run the
rhythmbox-metadata helper externally, it exits and the socket
disappears, rendering the value passed in to rhythmbox invalid, and
leaves one of the import failures with the message that it couldn't open
the tmp file (socket), which no longer exists. And all the other
incantations in rhythmbox itself seem to be getting run as separate
processes, rather than one that handles all the imports. Oddly enough,
I've imported some other songs just fine, since these errors, but these
songs keep failing to import. I wonder if the library database might be
in a broken state due to the first time it failed, as well. I don't know
where the actual database for the library is though.

[Bug 382626] Re: Nautilus location bar toggle icon implies unrelated function

2009-06-03 Thread Rodney Dawes
The icon is horrible anyway. It's used in other places as well
(GtkFileChooser uses it the same way Nautilus does), as it's a stock
gtk+ icon. If anyone can come up with a better metaphor for a generic
"edit" action (good luck), I'll gladly get the icon changed in gnome-
icon-theme. I would rather just see all the places using the icon, not
use it, though, as there are probably better icons to use, or there
could be design for a better UI to use (in the case of
Nautilus/FileChooser). Something more like the hyperlinks/arrows/entry
combination like Vista has would be better here I think.

[Bug 383396] [NEW] X crashes when screensaver activates

2009-06-03 Thread Rodney Dawes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I just installed the latest updates for Karmic, rebooted, logged in, and
was idle long enough for the screensaver to active. Upon doing so, I had
been returned to the GDM screen. To test, I logged back in and chose
"Lock Screen" on the main menu, to which my session was terminated, and
I again found myself at GDM.

2008-10-16 Thread Rodney Dawes
Ted, if that's the case, then why bother with it at all? You could just
wait until the "new panel" comes about, and have it Just Work (TM)
without all the breakage in the meantime, because the patch is
inadequate for dealing with a lot of seemingly common cases. I know one
of the first things I always do when I install a new system, is to
immediately remove the FUSA applet. It is of absolutely no use to me,
having only one user ever.

[Bug 402287] [NEW] Keeps showing recall warning

2009-07-21 Thread Rodney Dawes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

After one of the recent updates to Karmic, every time I log in on my
Fujitsu P7120d, the recall warning pops up, suggesting I need to view
the web site. Even though I clicked "Never Show Again" the dialog
continues to pop up after logging in. The dialog is also rather large
and confusing. Presumably the "OK" and "Cancel" buttons don't actually
do anything but close the dialog. Please fix the regression so that I
don't have to keep closing the dialog.

[Bug 160738] Re: context menu positioned next to mouse pointer when using keyboard in stead of next to keyboard position (nautilus, gnome menus, ...)

2009-03-27 Thread Rodney Dawes
This definitely has nothing to do with the gnome-common package. I think
it is a general gtk+ issue though, so am moving to the gtk+ package. It
seems like gtk+ should be positioning near the focus instead of the
mouse, which it is doing now. All the key does is cause a right-click
event to be simulated, and is not treated specially different from a
right click, which is presumably why the behavior is the current way.

[Bug 351986] [NEW] Multimedia key notifications are useless

2009-03-30 Thread Rodney Dawes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

After upgrading to Jaunty, I now see a notification every time i press
prev/next on my keyboard. These notifications are extraneous, and
annoying. When I have no music player running, I still get the
notifications. Do I really need a notification to tell me that I pressed
a key? Also, when rhythmbox is running, and iconified in my tray, I now
get two notifications, one for the song change from rhythmbox (which is
actually useful, as it has song title/artist info), and another from
gnome-settings-daemon for when I pressed the key. The positioning of the
two notifications is not always consistent, sometime the rhythmbox one
is on top, sometime the keypress. Also, as the height is not always
consistent, when the rhythmbox notification is on top, and I press next
before the notifications time out, the rhythmbox notification will
sometimes resize due to song/album title lengths, and overlap the
keypress notification.

Can we please get rid of the keypress notification? It's only useful to
notify me of a keypress, if something was supposed to happen, and
instead didn't. But in that case, I would rather be notified of the
error, and not the fact that I pressed the key. For example, with eject,
I would rather know that the device is locked by some process, than that
I pressed the key and the drive didn't eject. When pressing eject, I'm
expecting it to eject, and so then I can directly see/hear/feel that the
drive tray did not eject.

[Bug 306656] Re: Internal/external disk icons are bogus

2009-02-20 Thread Rodney Dawes
Alex, is 'Storage' NOT an external hard disk, but instead a usb flash
key? If it's a hard disk in a plastic case with a usb cable, then the
icon is correct as far as generic fall backs go, which is all we will
ship in gnome-icon-theme itself. If it's a flash key, then the icon
should be falling back to the media-flash when it is mounted, instead,
but probably whatever is generating the icon name for the icon, is
generating the wrong name.

What would you suggest using for a removable media icon outside of the
drive with a slot?

As for the Macintosh case you present, I do think it might be better to
just always show the drive-harddisk icon, for both the mounted and
unmounted states. If the user is not allowed to unmount the volume, the
readonly emblem should be added, and the unmount/eject actions disabled.
If the user is not allowed to mount the volume, the unreadable emblem
should be added, and the mount action disabled.

In all these cases though, I think the solutions lie somewhere other
than gnome-icon-theme, unless you have a particularly brilliant
suggestion for a better removable media metaphor, anyway. :)

This is certainly fixed now. Most if not all of the 3rd party app icons

The shared-mime-info package includes the MIME types for the links I've

suspect the bug should stay open until the new icon-naming-utils is

[Bug 333895] [NEW] Volume Info Patch Incorrect

2009-02-24 Thread Rodney Dawes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

The current xdg-volume-info patch in the gvfs package is slightly
incorrect due to a small oversight. It should be looking for .xdg-
volume-info insead of .volume-info, which it is currently looking for.
This apparently made it into the patch without me catching it, as I was
using .volume-info to test as I have a patched glib with a similar
patch, which was rejected upstream, and which conflicts with this patch.
The fixed patch is attached here, as well as upstream (as soon as
upstream bugzilla stops failing to do anything useful).

[Bug 332081] Re: Panel volume icon state changes to "mute" when volume reaches zero

2009-03-02 Thread Rodney Dawes
My music player (iPod) doesn't have mute. It has a volume slider, and
that's it. The only way to mute it, is to turn the volume to 0, or to
pause the music.

My Alpine stereo in my truck, also does not behave this way with mute.
The mute button on it, decreases the volume level to 4% of the original,
and then restores it when pressed again. To get no volume, the only
options are to decrease the volume by turning the knob to 0, turn the
power off, or pause the music (if the source is pausable).

I think we should probably either behave like Mac OS X does here, or
make the applet be astoundingly smarter, rather than exposing silly
technicalities to the user, as we are currently doing now.

2009-03-06 Thread Rodney Dawes
This is not a dup of #320921. This is a bug in Ubuntu's changes to the

The dialog currently looks poor in quality, with the missing icon, for
other themes. :-/
