[Bug 1251281] Re: gnome-session-flashback/Unity fails to start without hardware acceleration in cloud/remote environments (Forwarded-X/XRDP/VNC/NX/X2GO/Chromoting)
I tried to verify this, but bug 1416081 blocks testing with tightvncserver and xrdp as well as with x2goserver. Would anyone be willing to upload the patches in that bug to -proposed as well? I will fill in the SRU paperwork shortly. In the mean time, ppa:rtandy/flashback contains the necessary patches for testing. My testing steps: - install gnome-session-flashback and tightvncserver, - (trusty/utopic): install gnome-session-bin from -proposed, - create ~/.vnc/xstartup with appropriate contents: (vivid, session managed by gnome-session:) export XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME-Flashback:Unity export STARTUP=gnome-session --session=gnome-flashback-metacity --disable-acceleration-check exec /etc/X11/Xsession (vivid, session managed by upstart:) export DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome-flashback-metacity export XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME-Flashback:Unity exec /etc/X11/Xsession gnome-session (trusty/utopic, session managed by gnome-session:) export STARTUP=gnome-session --session=gnome-flashback --disable-acceleration-check exec /etc/X11/Xsession (trusty/utopic, session managed by upstart:) export DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome-fallback export XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity exec /etc/X11/Xsession gnome-session - chmod +x ~/.vnc/xstartup, - run vncserver, - from another host, run vncviewer. The keyboard problem I mentioned earlier seems to be related to bug 568401 and bug 658723 (but not bug 112955 or bug 112309). Basically Super modifier is always active when connected over VNC (or xrdp, as it uses VNC behind the scenes). FreeNX/X2Go don't seem to have this problem. With regards to this bug specifically, AFAICT the gnome-session changes in -proposed (supporting the --disable-acceleration-check switch, and applying it to upstart-managed gnome-flashback sessions) are working, but I'd love if a second person would confirm that! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-session in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1251281 Title: gnome-session-flashback/Unity fails to start without hardware acceleration in cloud/remote environments (Forwarded-X/XRDP/VNC/NX/X2GO/Chromoting) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-session/+bug/1251281/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1251281] Re: gnome-session-flashback/Unity fails to start without hardware acceleration in cloud/remote environments (Forwarded-X/XRDP/VNC/NX/X2GO/Chromoting)
Hi penalvch, Whether or not this works with xrdp probably depends on how your session is set up. I just tried installing gnome-session-flashback and xrdp on the vivid daily CD; the default configuration does nothing, but the following ~/.xsession: env DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome-flashback-metacity XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP =GNOME-Flashback:Unity gnome-session --session=gnome-flashback --disable-acceleration-check does load the session. (but the keyboard layout seems wrong somehow... :/) If xrdp needs to be adjusted to set this up by default, or documented somehow, maybe that should be a separate bug against xrdp. [Bug 1251281] Re: gnome-session-flashback/Unity fails to start without hardware acceleration in cloud/remote environments (Forwarded-X/XRDP/VNC/NX/X2GO/Chromoting)
I am happily running GNOME Flashback with the FreeNX server, and nx-libs from the X2Go stable PPA, on multiple Trusty terminal servers and it has been quite stable. The gnome-session --disable-acceleration-check option is needed, and also bug 1416081 has to be fixed to stop unity-settings- daemon from crashing. I have uploaded all the necessary patches to ppa:rtandy/flashback and attached them to these bugs. In the PPA I also patched gnome-session-flashback to use --disable-acceleration-check, but it's not really necessary -- just for symmetry :). Attached is the FreeNX config file I use. Note it relies on the Upstart session job to pass --disable-acceleration-check to gnome-session. For X2Go, /usr/bin/x2goruncommand has to be adjusted similarly; I will follow up to their tracker (http://bugs.x2go.org/cgi- bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=774) soon. I hope these patches can be considered for vivid, and maybe for trusty/utopic SRU as well. [Bug 1416081] [NEW] (FreeNX/X2Go) gnome-session crashed with SIGSEGV in gnome_idle_monitor_get_idletime()
Public bug reported: The X server used by FreeNX and X2Go does not support the IDLETIME counter. This eventually leads to a NULL pointer dereference by gnome- session due to a missing parameter check in gnome_idle_monitor_get_idletime. This renders GNOME Flashback unusable via FreeNX/X2Go in Trusty. Utopic and newer are not affected and the patch is not applicable as the GnomeIdleMonitor implementation was rewritten. Saucy is also affected but is EOL, however I would like to fix this in Trusty as the patch is tiny and IMO obviously correct. This and bug #1251281 are the only bugs preventing GNOME Flashback being used via FreeNX/X2Go in Trusty; and the latter has an easy workaround (divert the acceleration-check helper and replace it with /bin/true) and may be fixed properly soon. I would be happy to prepare a debdiff and fill out the SRU template if a sponsor agrees that the patch is SRUable. [Bug 1251281] Re: gnome-flashback (metacity) fails to start without hardware acceleration, cloud/remote environments (Forwarded-X/XRDP/VNC/NX/X2GO/Chromoting)
Hi Eugene, Can you please attach a debdiff of your proposed changes here, suitable for upload to utopic? If you mark it as a patch, a bot will subscribe the sponsors team and it will show up on their board for review. http://reqorts.qa.ubuntu.com/reports/sponsoring/ The queue is fairly long right now, but someone will review it eventually. Status Fix Committed is appropriate once a fixed package is uploaded to utopic-proposed. After the fix goes into Utopic (promoted from -proposed), we can follow the SRU process and get it backported to Trusty. Thanks for working on this! [Bug 1252818] [NEW] gnome-menus: desktop entries duplicated in Other menu
Public bug reported: gnome-menus 3.8.0 contains a bug that causes menu entries to appear in the Other category, in addition to the expected category. This is fixed upstream in 3.8.1 (b89833d: layout: don't use OnlyUnallocated for sections different than Other). Running the attached script on a system with python-gi, gnome-menus, and gir1.2-gmenu-3.0 installed shows the spurious Other menu in saucy and trusty; merging gnome-menus 3.8.1 makes it go away. ** Affects: gnome-menus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: gnome-menus (Debian) Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Tags: saucy trusty ** Attachment added: menu.py https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1252818/+attachment/3912794/+files/menu.py ** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #729940 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=729940 ** Also affects: gnome-menus (Debian) via http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=729940 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-menus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1252818 Title: gnome-menus: desktop entries duplicated in Other menu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-menus/+bug/1252818/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1232299] Re: gnome-session-flashback with Compiz launches Unity if you create a user and log in for the first time directly with gnome-flashback
Got it. The bug is in Compiz. When Compiz starts up it looks for upgrade scripts in /usr/share/compizconfig/upgrades and runs each of them. For each upgrade, ccsProcessUpgrade (compizconfig/libcompizconfig/src/main.c:4737) sets the Compiz profile to the one mentioned in the filename (unity for all the scripts shipped in compiz-gnome); I guess that is so that the affected plugins are made active. But, it doesn't set the profile back afterwards! So, the workaround for a new user account is: mkdir -p ~/.config/compiz-1/compizconfig for file in /usr/share/compizconfig/upgrades/*.upgrade; do basename $f; done ~/.config/compiz-1/compizconfig/done_upgrades Then Compiz won't run the upgrade scripts (since we told it they've already been done), and we avoid setting the profile to unity. Compiz devs, would you please consider trying to fix this bug? If I have time I'll try to submit a patch, but it won't be soon... ** Changed in: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Invalid ** Summary changed: - gnome-session-flashback with Compiz launches Unity if you create a user and log in for the first time directly with gnome-flashback + Compiz doesn't undo profile change after processing upgrade -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1232299 Title: Compiz doesn't undo profile change after processing upgrade To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1232299/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
