Please ask for support in an appropriate venue:

I haven't looked at xrdp ever since working on this bug, but IIRC it did
still require a bit of configuration (see e.g. comment 58) and reading
of scripts to see how things are put together.

Looks like the /etc/X11/Xsession wrapper is being used; it's trying to
launch an Upstart session. In this case you need to export:

DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome-fallback
XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity

in order for the upstart Xsession.d scripts to work properly.

Please double-check the versions of the relevant packages:

If you still have problems, please log into your NX with just xterm as

[Bug 1251281] Re: gnome-session-flashback/Unity fails to start without hardware acceleration in cloud/remote environments (Forwarded-X/XRDP/VNC/NX/X2GO/Chromoting)

2015-04-02 Thread Ryan Tandy
Hi all,

The patches that were in my PPA (ppa:rtandy/flashback) are now in
trusty-proposed and utopic-proposed; so if you were using those
packages, please head over to bug 1416081, test the proposed packages,
and leave your feedback there.

If you had the PPA packages installed, please ensure you _downgrade_ to
the proposed packages as the version in -proposed is lower than what was
in the PPA. ppa-purge may help with that. (My bad; will choose ppa
versions more carefully next time.)

Thanks!

supported in trusty-proposed, as soon as it's released to -updates that
won't be needed any more.

[Bug 1251281] Re: gnome-session-flashback/Unity fails to start without hardware acceleration in cloud/remote environments (Forwarded-X/XRDP/VNC/NX/X2GO/Chromoting)

2015-03-27 Thread Ryan Tandy
I tried to verify this, but bug 1416081 blocks testing with
tightvncserver and xrdp as well as with x2goserver. Would anyone be
willing to upload the patches in that bug to -proposed as well? I will
fill in the SRU paperwork shortly. In the mean time,
ppa:rtandy/flashback contains the necessary patches for testing.

My testing steps:

- install gnome-session-flashback and tightvncserver,
- (trusty/utopic): install gnome-session-bin from -proposed,
- create ~/.vnc/xstartup with appropriate contents:

(vivid, session managed by gnome-session:)

export XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME-Flashback:Unity
export STARTUP=gnome-session --session=gnome-flashback-metacity
--disable-acceleration-check
exec /etc/X11/Xsession

(vivid, session managed by upstart:)

export DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome-flashback-metacity
export XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME-Flashback:Unity
exec /etc/X11/Xsession gnome-session

(trusty/utopic, session managed by gnome-session:)

export STARTUP=gnome-session --session=gnome-flashback
--disable-acceleration-check
exec /etc/X11/Xsession

(trusty/utopic, session managed by upstart:)

export DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome-fallback
export XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity
exec /etc/X11/Xsession gnome-session

- chmod +x ~/.vnc/xstartup,
- run vncserver,
- from another host, run vncviewer.

The keyboard problem I mentioned earlier seems to be related to bug
568401 and bug 658723 (but not bug 112955 or bug 112309). Basically
Super modifier is always active when connected over VNC (or xrdp, as it
uses VNC behind the scenes). FreeNX/X2Go don't seem to have this
problem.

With regards to this bug specifically, AFAICT the gnome-session changes
in -proposed (supporting the --disable-acceleration-check switch, and
applying it to upstart-managed gnome-flashback sessions) are working,
but I'd love if a second person would confirm that!

[Bug 1251281] Re: gnome-session-flashback/Unity fails to start without hardware acceleration in cloud/remote environments (Forwarded-X/XRDP/VNC/NX/X2GO/Chromoting)

2015-03-25 Thread Ryan Tandy
Hi penalvch,

Whether or not this works with xrdp probably depends on how your session
is set up. I just tried installing gnome-session-flashback and xrdp on
the vivid daily CD; the default configuration does nothing, but the
following ~/.xsession:

env DESKTOP_SESSION=gnome-flashback-metacity XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
=GNOME-Flashback:Unity gnome-session --session=gnome-flashback
--disable-acceleration-check

does load the session. (but the keyboard layout seems wrong somehow...
:/)

If xrdp needs to be adjusted to set this up by default, or documented
somehow, maybe that should be a separate bug against xrdp.

Thanks for your work triaging and testing!

[Bug 1251281] Re: gnome-session-flashback/Unity fails to start without hardware acceleration in cloud/remote environments (Forwarded-X/XRDP/VNC/NX/X2GO/Chromoting)

2015-03-06 Thread Ryan Tandy
I am happily running GNOME Flashback with the FreeNX server, and nx-libs
from the X2Go stable PPA, on multiple Trusty terminal servers and it has
been quite stable. The gnome-session --disable-acceleration-check option
is needed, and also bug 1416081 has to be fixed to stop unity-settings-
daemon from crashing. I have uploaded all the necessary patches to
ppa:rtandy/flashback and attached them to these bugs. In the PPA I also
patched gnome-session-flashback to use --disable-acceleration-check, but
it's not really necessary -- just for symmetry :).

Attached is the FreeNX config file I use. Note it relies on the Upstart
session job to pass --disable-acceleration-check to gnome-session. For
X2Go, /usr/bin/x2goruncommand has to be adjusted similarly; I will
follow up to their tracker (http://bugs.x2go.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=774) soon.

I hope these patches can be considered for vivid, and maybe for
trusty/utopic SRU as well. Thanks for reading!

[Bug 1416081] [NEW] (FreeNX/X2Go) gnome-session crashed with SIGSEGV in gnome_idle_monitor_get_idletime()

2015-01-29 Thread Ryan Tandy
Public bug reported:

The X server used by FreeNX and X2Go does not support the IDLETIME
counter. This eventually leads to a NULL pointer dereference by gnome-
session due to a missing parameter check in
gnome_idle_monitor_get_idletime. This renders GNOME Flashback unusable
via FreeNX/X2Go in Trusty.

Utopic and newer are not affected and the patch is not applicable as the
GnomeIdleMonitor implementation was rewritten. Saucy is also affected
but is EOL, however I would like to fix this in Trusty as the patch is
tiny and IMO obviously correct.

This and bug #1251281 are the only bugs preventing GNOME Flashback being
used via FreeNX/X2Go in Trusty; and the latter has an easy workaround
(divert the acceleration-check helper and replace it with /bin/true) and
may be fixed properly soon.

I would be happy to prepare a debdiff and fill out the SRU template if a
sponsor agrees that the patch is SRUable.

[Bug 1251281] Re: gnome-flashback (metacity) fails to start without hardware acceleration, cloud/remote environments (Forwarded-X/XRDP/VNC/NX/X2GO/Chromoting)

2014-06-02 Thread Ryan Tandy
Hi Eugene,

Can you please attach a debdiff of your proposed changes here, suitable
for upload to utopic? If you mark it as a patch, a bot will subscribe
the sponsors team and it will show up on their board for review.
http://reqorts.qa.ubuntu.com/reports/sponsoring/ The queue is fairly
long right now, but someone will review it eventually.

Status Fix Committed is appropriate once a fixed package is uploaded
to utopic-proposed.

After the fix goes into Utopic (promoted from -proposed), we can follow
the SRU process and get it backported to Trusty.

Thanks for working on this! I'm also interested in having gnome-
flashback working over NX.

[Bug 1232299] Re: Compiz doesn't undo profile change after processing upgrade

2014-04-05 Thread Ryan Tandy
There are some test packages for trusty in ppa:rtandy/lp1232299

Does anyone else affected have a trusty system they could test that on?
For me, my own session and the guest session both work well, under
Flashback (Compiz) and Unity.

I experienced a Unity crash one time, but now I can't reproduce it, so I
don't know whether my changes caused it.

libplist 1.11 is now in unstable and looks syncable.

Sorry, I'm totally wrong about libplist 1.11 being syncable. The soname
changed (libplist1 - libplist2) and I think now is probably not the

[Bug 1232299] Re: Compiz doesn't undo profile change after processing upgrade

2014-03-26 Thread Ryan Tandy
I've been poking at this a bit. This change makes the bug go away when
using the ini backend, but not gsettings. I'm not sure whether there's a
separate bug in the gsettings backend, or whether this change is
incorrect. I'll put some more time into it when I can. Hoping to get it
fixed for trusty.

AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=rtandy

... with gdm from precise-updates:

~$ dpkg-query -W gdm
gdm 3.0.4-0ubuntu15.2

gdm crashes to a text console and the segfault is recorded in dmesg:

After installing gdm from precise-proposed and rebooting:

~$ dpkg-query -W gdm

gdm starts properly and automatically logs me in to my desktop session.

[Bug 805154] Re: gdm-simple-slave crashed with SIGSEGV in _nss_compat_getpwnam_r()

2013-11-25 Thread Ryan Tandy
The change from 3.0.4-0ubuntu16 is trivial: two lines plus a bit of
quilt noise. For me at least the crash is easily reproduced by
activating automatic login, and the patch fixes it. Would be lovely to
have this uploaded if possible. Thanks for considering.

[Bug 805154] Re: gdm-simple-slave crashed with SIGSEGV in _nss_compat_getpwnam_r()

2013-11-25 Thread Ryan Tandy
** Description changed:

+ SRU justification:
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ * With automatic login enabled in /etc/gdm/custom.conf, gdm crashes
+ instead of logging in, and doesn't respawn, dropping to a text console
+ instead.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * install gdm and choose it as the default display manager at the
+ debconf prompt
+
+ * create /etc/gdm/custom.conf with contents:
+
+ [daemon]
+ AutomaticLoginEnable=true
+ AutomaticLogin=some-username
+
+ (where some-username is a user on the system)
+
+ * Reboot (or stop the previous display manager and start gdm)
+
+ * In gdm in precise-updates, instead of logging in, gdm crashes, the
+ system drops to a text console, and a gdm-simple-slave segfault is
+ recorded in dmesg.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * Minimal. The change consists only of adding a missing NULL parameter
+ check.

[Bug 1252818] [NEW] gnome-menus: desktop entries duplicated in Other menu

2013-11-19 Thread Ryan Tandy
Public bug reported:

gnome-menus 3.8.0 contains a bug that causes menu entries to appear in
the Other category, in addition to the expected category. This is fixed
upstream in 3.8.1 (b89833d: layout: don't use OnlyUnallocated for
sections different than Other).

Running the attached script on a system with python-gi, gnome-menus, and
gir1.2-gmenu-3.0 installed shows the spurious Other menu in saucy and
trusty; merging gnome-menus 3.8.1 makes it go away.

[Bug 1232299] Re: gnome-session-flashback with Compiz launches Unity if you create a user and log in for the first time directly with gnome-flashback

2013-11-13 Thread Ryan Tandy
Got it. The bug is in Compiz.

When Compiz starts up it looks for upgrade scripts in
/usr/share/compizconfig/upgrades and runs each of them. For each
upgrade, ccsProcessUpgrade
(compizconfig/libcompizconfig/src/main.c:4737) sets the Compiz profile
to the one mentioned in the filename (unity for all the scripts
shipped in compiz-gnome); I guess that is so that the affected plugins
are made active. But, it doesn't set the profile back afterwards!

So, the workaround for a new user account is:

mkdir -p ~/.config/compiz-1/compizconfig
for file in /usr/share/compizconfig/upgrades/*.upgrade; do basename $f; done
~/.config/compiz-1/compizconfig/done_upgrades

Then Compiz won't run the upgrade scripts (since we told it they've
already been done), and we avoid setting the profile to unity.

Compiz devs, would you please consider trying to fix this bug? If I have
time I'll try to submit a patch, but it won't be soon...

** Changed in: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed = Invalid

** Summary changed:

- gnome-session-flashback with Compiz launches Unity if you create a user and
log in for the first time directly with gnome-flashback

[Bug 1089148] [NEW] rhythmbox can't play PLS containing PLS tracks

2012-12-11 Thread Ryan Tandy
Public bug reported:

Comparing two stream links from http://www.di.fm/ :

the Deep Tech stream -- http://listen.di.fm/public3/deeptech.pls has
entries like:

File1=http://pub3.di.fm:80/di_deeptech
Title1=Digitally Imported - Deep Tech

the Trance stream -- http://listen.di.fm/public3/trance.pls has entries
like:

File1=http://stream-19.shoutcast.com:80/listen.pls?sid=1
Title1=Digitally Imported - Trance

Rhythmbox in precise and quantal (haven't tried raring) can play the
Deep Tech playlist, but not the Trance playlist. It complains: This
appears to be a text file.

This is probably an upstream bug, and now that I think of it is probably
in totem-pl-parser or such rather than Rhythmbox itself. Anyway, I
wanted to track it in Ubuntu since it affects two releases that I use.

If it's helpful, and if someone can help me confirm which component is
actually responsible, I can go and file this with GNOME as well.

Thanks!

[Bug 607357] Re: cannot cope with incorrect current password under LDAP backend

2011-07-20 Thread Ryan Tandy
I installed gnome-control-center 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu2 from lucid-proposed
and verified that it fixes the reported issue. Thanks for accepting my
patch!

[Bug 607357] Re: gnome-about-me: cannot cope with incorrect current password under LDAP backend

2011-07-08 Thread Ryan Tandy
Thanks for the response. I fixed the problem locally a long time ago
and mostly forgot about this bug. Looking at my bugs in
bugzilla.gnome.org I don't think I ever filed it upstream either.

I installed a fresh VM of Natty and checked the behaviour. I use
libpam-ldapd these days and when that is active the behaviour is
correct. I also checked libpam-ldap and when that is active the bug is
still present as reported.

I am attaching the patch I have in production that fixes this problem.
It's against gnome-control-center 2.30.1-0ubuntu1 from Lucid. Should I
regenerate the patch against upstream's git master and send it to them?

** Patch added: fix interaction with passwd when pam_ldap is active

[Bug 607357] [NEW] gnome-about-me: cannot cope with incorrect current password under LDAP backend

2010-07-19 Thread Ryan Tandy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

When changing a UNIX password, if you enter an incorrect current
password passwd will print an error and exit. However when using LDAP,
unless the password has length 0 passwd offers another chance.

Enter login(LDAP) password:
LDAP Password incorrect: try again
Enter login(LDAP) password:

gnome-about-me mistakes the second prompt for the prompt to enter a new
password and assumes the initial password was correct. Proceeding
through the dialog eventually results in gnome-about-me hanging since
passwd exits either at an unexpected time or not at all.

The interaction completes as expected when the correct initial password
is given.
