True control lies in harmonising with the community, and paradoxically
involves letting go of your need for control while also giving the part

Heartbleed shows inherent insecurity of a house divided against itself

Re: [Bug 296867]

2014-04-28 Thread Sam Liddicott
I think most people take it for granted that telepathy devs are on the dark
side - even the name of the project gives it away!

Telepathy is for other people to read your thoughts.

But it's bad manners to bring it up on the bug report list.
On 28 Apr 2014 17:51, Bugzi 296...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote:

After all that NSA, PRISM, etc, scandal, I don't want to imagine the silly
face Telepathy's developers who stated so arrogantly that security wasn't
very important must have every morning. They thought that critic users who
were demanding security were little less than intellectually retarded
people, who couldn't distinguish what is really important, whereas they,
the developers, in Their infinite wisdom, had the Truth, knowing what was
prioritary, not us, stupid users who can't even code.
After all these of costant slapping in their faces from the news, the
papers, the public; in short: the reality, one would think they must have
become a little humbler (Christ, they even rejected to work on encryption
despite people was ready to collect money pay them to do it!), but it seems
that things haven't evolved too much, right? (KDE's Telepathy
implementation has even been removed from Prism Break website because its
[lack of] security is just unacceptable:
 https://github.com/nylira/prism-break/issues/939 )

Well, we, the critic users, aren't developers in this project, or at all.
We can't tell them to do what we think is prioritary when the other 90% of
users think is not (y'all know: a trillion flies can't be wrong. Let's eat
sh*t), nor can we write an encryption plugin, so I think all critic users
should stop trying to make TP devs reason, it's a lost cause.
I suspect that Collabora, the company after Telepathy, might have been
intentionally delaying as much as possible the securization of Telepathy.
We known now that the obscure hand of the NSA has been involved in the
development of cryptography standards and even in TOR. As an iceberg's
peak, surely we don't even imagine the 90% unter the water. Suspiction is
not knowledge, of course, but all that immovable interest in not writting a
damn plugin for OTR o implementing any other secure encryption method year
after year, even when people was ready to pay... Well, it just smells
 rather fishy.

So, dear folks who do know that fascistoid governments and companies arent
interested in bad guys only but want to have controlled all of their
people just in case, simply use Pidgin; it's ugly as a witch, yes, but it
works; or if you want to polute your system with Java, you have Jisti,
which is more feature rich, but I don't think all this discussion, all this
bitching and all that We are the devs, if you wan't something do it
yourself! has any sense, and even less if there are interests who don't
want our conversations to be private.

 Cheers.

2014-04-28 Thread Sam Liddicott
I think people are trying provoke a post-Snowden comment from the devs or
Ubuntu.

This uncomfortable discussion has an important social role in establishing
or restoring or writing off credibility.

Pre-Snowden the official position seemed incredible, but potentially
honestly held.

It may even have been part of the Ubuntus baffling but consistent long term
strategy of replacing working software with half finished software.

But post-Snowden we see an opportunity to discover if they are accidental
helps or wilful supporters of the evil empire.

Thus are reputations forged.

just as crucial as and even less appreciated than the developers.
Certainly if I get round to writing this code it will need their
 attention.

What I don't like are people who do nothing except repeat something we

The problem occurs with a
ID 0204:6025 Chipsbank Microelectronics Co., Ltd CBM2080 Flash drive controller

but not with my Sandisk Cruzr

I'm using Maverick, with Rhythmbox 0.13.1

Disabling MTP plugin stops it breaking

[Bug 638971] [NEW] CPU takes 100%

2010-09-15 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

When playing DVD's or DVD iso's with totem CPU takes 100%

The CPU used doesn't seem related to the playback window size

I think it needs a little more publicity. Perhaps on
http://blogs.msdn.com/ or New York Times technology pages (they've not
published much on GNU/Linux since 2009).

You're too smart for Linux if you can configure a screen-saver is a
suitable headline.

I used to use photo-screensaver when I could configure it to spend only
1 second per photo.
Now I don't use a screen-saver because I don't like the dozens of

[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2010-08-31 Thread Sam Liddicott
Relax. They (upstream) have a fix - of course!

This bug has been marked as a secret show-case bug for some MS fan-boi
(or Ballmer on his swan song) to pull out as evidence as to how kack
linux (Gnome) is because you can't even configure your screen-saver.

As soon as that happens, the patch will be applied to steal away the
thunder and undermine MS marketing strategy.

This big is also part of the strategy for bug #1
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1

All this is obvious (and I shouldn't have to explain it) if you read
between-the-lines here:
http://live.gnome.org/GnomeScreensaver/FrequentlyAskedQuestions#head-
64ef29e28226e09a3b849d8f00726cc004625c62

And realize that most of the reasons given are pretty much dumb reasons
that only appeal to powerful entities who need help controlling their
serfs and in no way relate to giving competent power over their own
operating system.

Once you realise that, it all makes perfect sense!

Happens to me on latest lucid.
To avoid the problem I have to click on the local in box On This Computer as

Then I wait until my mapi folders have been detected and listed and can
then click on my MAPI inbox, and it will work fine.

[Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption

2010-03-30 Thread Sam Liddicott
Just to clarify;

1. the fedora guys have marked it as wont-fix
since which we read this comment in the fedora bug tracker:

Jonathan Blandford 2009-11-16 08:23:37 EST

[ Note that upstream has since changed their mind on that, and claims to be
considering how to include OTR. In the short run though, its gotta be pidgin.
]

2. the ubuntu guys have marked it merely as triaged, not wont-fix

Also I note the main advantage of OTR is that it supports end-to-end encryption
even when the transport does not support encryption.

In the mean time I'm the cause of Ubuntu being dissed by my associates
because Pidgin doesn't support video or audio chat, and I'm certainly
not going to use Empathy in it's current state.

[Bug 432471] [NEW] media player keys, cross-fading, and gtk buttons interact badly

2009-09-18 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Description:Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release:9.10

I have just upgraded rhythmbox to 0.12.4 (with latest Karmic Koala) and
rebooted.

My rhythmbox had cross-fading set, and media-player keys activiated.

As I played a track by double-clicking I found that my play/pause media
key did nothing, neither did right-click on the status-tray on the task
-bar and clicking play; neither did clicking on the play/pause gtk
button.

The progress-bar kept moving, and the audio kept playing.

If i double-clicked another track, then both tracks played together.

Disabling and re-enabling cross-fade and media keys stopped the problem
and so I cannot investigate further.

[Bug 375436] [NEW] IMAP sync gets stuck on expected message gone

2009-05-12 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution fails to load messages from some folders with the message:

Error while Refreshing folder.
Incomplete server response: no information provided for message 1479

This is technically true in this case, the imap server was unable to
provide message 1479, but it should not be a fatal error - evolution
should carry on and show the other messages that were available - as
does MS Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Pocket Outlook etc.

[Bug 375446] [NEW] evolution IMAP ignores additional namespaces

2009-05-12 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

This post says it all:
http://www.mail-archive.com/evolution-l...@gnome.org/msg06856.html

My mail server is setup like this:

INBOX
 +--fruits
 +--veggies
 +--meats
cheese
 +--swiss
 +--cheddar
pizza
 +--buffalowing
 +--taco

INBOX is the defaul mailbox namespace, So I can only get access to INBOX via
Evolution.
I've fiddled with Override server-supplied folder namespace in Receiving
Options and left
Namespace: or with a variety of different options, but Evolution can
never seem to see my cheese and pizza boxes. I'm using IMAP for the
server type.

Thunderbird works fine, outlook works fine. Evolution just doesn't
notice.

I'm using Citadel imap server.

[Bug 293832] Re: printer prints page at wrong position, page cut

2009-04-06 Thread Sam Liddicott
I take that back.

The official brother debs cause the test-print page to print properly,
printing from firefox seems to come out fine

but printing from gedit still cuts off the first 2 text lines, although
the left columns are all there.

The printer job options margins were all set to 0 points. I set them all
to 24pt which moved the text about 1.5 em's to the right, but about six
lines down suddenly making room for the gedit page header as well as the
missing 2 lines.

Most weird, maybe 0 as a margin value has a magic meaning?

[Bug 339451] [NEW] import too slow - enable import button before preview complete

2009-03-08 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

I'm trying to import about 1700 photos from an NFS share, and
annoyingly the import button of the import dialog is disabled and
seems that it will remain disabled until all the image thumbnails have
loaded in the import dialog.

At 1 per second this is going to take half an hour just to be able to
click the import button - and then probably go through it all again as
it does the actual import.

Please allow the import to work while the thumbnails are being generated
- sometimes people just want to import a large folder and don't want to
inspect each thumbnail just to be sure.

Subject: [Bug 160264] Re: [nvidia] compiz displays white screen when locked

Just thought I'd add this:

I just tried locking my screen as User1. The screen-saver started
running. I hit ESC to exit the screen-saver and log back in. I was
prompted with the standard unlock login prompt (no white screen).

At this screen I chose Switch User instead of logging in. I was
prompted through the GDM login screen for a username and password. I
entered User2 / password and was dropped into User2's desktop
immediately (as if I had switched users; i.e. it didn't login a new
User2 session, but rather switched me to User2 --this all seems
correct).

At this point I switched back to User1 and was prompted with User1's
unlock screen --NOT the white screen. I was able to unlock the screen
with User1's password and was back to User1's desktop.

My reason for mentioning this is because it seems that when I went from
the unlock screen (where U1's screen was locked), I was able to return
without the white screen. When I go directly from my desktop and switch
users, I return to the white screen. I'm hoping that this will help to
isolate the offending code.

To tie this into the permissions idea; the locked screen prompt is
publicly visible, while my desktop isn't. ?? M'eh. Just a thought.
Anyway, I hope this helps shed some light.

I'm wondering if the loss of audio is related to loss of alsa dmix, my

I'l check into that, it may have been that totem gstreamer (which I
don't use for poor dvd menu support) couldn't play ANY audio.

I'll look into it.

I'm trying to get dmix back as it seems more compatible with multi-users

[Bug 102991] Re: noisy audio decode error

2008-03-13 Thread Sam Liddicott
Right now on a re-install of hardy heron alpha 3 now updated to the latest
(with libc6 fix) totem-gstreamer can't even play the audio (mplayer can).
(I hate totem gstreamer can't show dvd menus why does it keep re-installing
itself)

totem-xine plays that file just fine.

I've seen lots of people never get round to the next version.

If he releases this version then it doesn't matter if he doesn't get

[Bug 41335] Re: DVD playing is not working correctly with totem-gstreamer

2008-02-16 Thread Sam Liddicott
Until totem-gstreamer has menus working, can we please NOT have it set
as the default, but use totem-xine instead.

I'm using Hardy and my children keep getting frustrated because totem-gstreamer
keeps getting installed with updates.
It's a load of crock and stops them watching their DVD's, please don't make
half-baked packages the default when there is another alternative that has
worked for years.

I'd just like to confirm that on my system disabling the SyncToVblank
option in compiz solved my problem. I am now able to switch users
without any problems. I suspect there are two bugs in play here that
give similar symptoms as mine was definitely a compiz problem.

[Bug 112518] Re: Switch User freezes at blank screen

2007-09-11 Thread Sam Liddicott
I tried disabled extmod in my xorg.conf, but with or without it, if I
login (with compiz enabled) and switch to a text console and back, then
I'm stuck on a blank screen and need a remote gdm restart doing.

In any case I find that a remote kill of the compiz.real process will
unlock the vt lock and recover things pretty much (apart from
compiz.real being dead stops doing its work)

username 11919 11894 3 21:24 ?00:00:01 /usr/bin/compiz.real
--ignore-desktop-hints --replace ccp

kill -9 11919
in my case recovered it.

So the bug is in compiz.real, maybe?

I did an strace on compiz as I switched to a text console and back again

[Bug 104187] gparted

2007-04-07 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gparted

gparted ignores bad partition tables and presumes there is none.
e.g. if partitions overlap, or a logical partition is flagged as physical, or a
partition goes beyond disk boundaries etc, instead of reporting these errors
(as parted does) gparted pretends there is no partition at all.
Thats a nice way to lose all the data on the disk.

[Bug 102991] noisy audio decode error

2007-04-04 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I'm using feisty fawn.

This bug-report screen won't let me attach a file, but I'll attach an
avi in the next step.

If I play with mplayer the audio output is perfect. mplayer reports the audio
as:
Opening audio decoder: [pcm] Uncompressed PCM audio decoder
AUDIO: 16000 Hz, 1 ch, u8, 128.0 kbit/100.00% (ratio: 16000-16000)
Selected audio codec: [pcm] afm: pcm (Uncompressed PCM)

but totem plays a load of static barely overlaid with the original
soundtrack.

xine also plays fine, although I am using totem-xine... go figure
(xinelib 1.1.4)

[Bug 99070] shares-admin won't share nsf AND smb

2007-04-03 Thread Sam Liddicott
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

This is actually a complicated set of bugs

1. right-click on a folder and select Share Folder from the popup menu.
observe that only either SMB or NFS can be selected at a time.
If you select SMB and fill in the details and then select NFS and fill in the
details and finish, then the SMB details are lost.

2. sudo shares-admin
can be used to set up SMB and NFS together, but then when the share is edited
via right-click Share Folder one of them goes away again.

3.There is also a bug using sudo shares-admin
a. run shares-admin as root
b. click on +ADD
c. click on the PATH listbox an select other
d. type: /home
and press ENTER
e. see that HOME now appears in the drop-down list box
f. click on OK.
g. see that /home as NOT been shared, but whatever was the initial path in the
path-choosing dialog.

If I use click-browsing to navigate to a folder then this is selected OK
AND saved OK.

In doing this test I also got:
Gtk-ERROR **: file gtkfilechooserdefault.c: line 6136 (update_chooser_entry):
assertion failed: (impl-location_entry != NULL)

[Bug 97572] can't skip unskipable DVD tracks

2007-03-28 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

- so big brother got GNOME too, eh?

Like any decent DVD player older versions of totem would allow me to
skip to the next track.

Totem 2.18.0 and xine-lib 1.1.4 now disables the skip-track buttons for
some tracks like the logo track, the copyright track etc

I can still seek to the end of those mind-control track, but a click-
and-drag x 3 isn't as easy as 3 clicks.

I know in the windows world that system administrators are usually
control freaks that micromanage what users can do. But the FREE in free
software means that far more Linux users expect freedom. It is not
logical that in windows world the default is freedom and system changes
must be made to add controls, but that in a Linux world the default is
control, and one must go find feedom with no help. At least make it
easy to return to the old xscreensaver or gnome one that is equivalent.

Please do not make Linux emulate the worst of windows.

Or to be more clear; as the administrator of my family PC,
I have not locked down access to screen saver settings,
and yet, my family cannot configure their screen-save settings.

Windows policy editor does allows the admin to select which settings are
locked down.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 22007 ***

I think you mistook me for a supporter of the foul and ghastly and
unusable and undesirable nothingness that the gnome-screensaver
configurator currently is.

And quite possibly windows doesn't let you lock-down
screen-saver-settings via the policy editor, I haven't used it for - oh
so long - but GENERALLY the policy editor lets you choose which
configuration items should be locked down rather than locking them all
down which is what gnome seems to being doing in the name of ab^H^usability.

Sam

* Carey Schug wrote, On 03/11/06 15:39:

Which windows was that? on my win-xp I could configure screen saver
settings from my unprivileged account by default. I didn't even know it
could be restricted without adding external software packages, as I know
was required in earlier windows versions. I think you must have
selected something in windows to restrict the screen savers. Now, true,
unprivileged users cannot install NEW screen savers, but that is not
what was being discussed, the problem report is only about changing
options on screen savers that come on the ubuntu install CD.

Anyway, I don't care what the default is, I just want it to be EASY to
 allow freedom to change settings.

If the default is no change allowed, but I can go in as root and check a
box somewhere that allows changing settings, I would be happy.

I have done the work around and it is messy. You have to edit config
files by hand to disable the gnome screen saver, then install
xscreensaver, and even then you LOSE functionality (password locking of
screen and/or hibernate, which I don't have to have so I do do without).

Even if configuring was restricted to root that would be acceptable to
me. But the only configuring that can be done on a default ubuntu
system is by manually editing the individual screen saver config files.
And, i presume, kill and restart the daemon, since there was no change
when I didn't do that. Anything that requires vi or even gedit is *NOT*
easy, and even gedit didn't work for me except by the special first
userid (which I put aside and don't use as I think it has special
privileges like root) unless something is done to manually configure the
display. When I attempted to do that, I used vi.

Also, one final nit, the gnome screen saver doesn't have most of the
favorite themes that I liked in xscreensaver, and, in general, has more
the feel of a windows screen saver to me, and i want to be as different
 as possible.

If Ubuntu wants to change the default for screen savers that grab photos
to NOT grab them from the web, to avoid a risk of porn, I would support
that. That was an unlikely, but reasonable concern about locking down
screen saver configuring (NOT including installing new ones). And I
never said there weren't control freaks in Linux, just that in Windows
 there were FAR MORE.

OK, I *DID* upload the crash report, it's a human/malone issue.

Malone complains if I don't provide a description for the upload, but only
after the upload is complete.
I didn't see the error message and thought the upload was successful - so -
sorry - no crash report for this one, but I just uploaded another crash report
