[Bug 745983] Re: Closing a Nautilus window crashes the whole file manager

2011-04-02 Thread Sense Hofstede
Thank you for helping with making Ubuntu better by reporting this as a
paper cut. However, the One Hundred Paper Cuts project is for small
usability issues that are trivial to fix. From your description,
especially the refreshing desktop part, it seems that Nautilus doesn't
wrongly close all windows when you try to close one, but crashes
completely and then restarts.

Therefore this is a regular bug and I am declining this for the One
Hundred Paper Cuts project. I am leaving the Nautilus task open, because
this is a valid bug. Other bug triagers will process this bug further.

** Summary changed:

- Pressing X on a nautilus window, quits all nautilus windows (and refreshes
the desktop)
+ Closing a Nautilus window crashes the whole file manager

Deluge added its own indicator meanwhile, and that is using the unedited
tray_menu from the GtkStatusIcon. However, the submenus are not
displayed at all here, so this seems to be an issue still.

They are using Glade, maybe that worsens the situation.

[Bug 717631] [NEW] XChat GNOME menu bar doesn't show up in classic GNOME

2011-02-12 Thread Sense Hofstede
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xchat-gnome

When you run XChat GNOME in the regular GNOME 2.x desktop, with the
panel and Metacity, its menu doesn't show. You have to explicitly run it
with the command 'UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=false xchat-gnome' in order to make
it show its menu.

The menu does not show up in the Indicator Appmenu widget on the GNOME
Panel either.

[Bug 707606] [NEW] GtkMenus doen't show on Glade's canvas in Natty

2011-01-25 Thread Sense Hofstede
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: glade-3

In Ubuntu 11.04 alpha, natty, a GtkMenu won't show up on Glade's canvas
when running it in Unity. I suspect that the adaptations made to Gtk+
cause the GtkMenu to be hidden in the Glade interface designer as well.
This makes the menu not show up anywhere.

I think that we ought to make the menu show in the interface editor, so
you can edit it. You cannot edit the menu if it is not there.

[Bug 704392] Re: Make Ubuntu's default settings the fallback of GNOME Settings Daemon

2011-01-18 Thread Sense Hofstede
Not resetting at all probably would be the best option, but it could be
that the reset happens due to the nature of the GSettings system. When
settings are updated, they are immediately changed in applications that
use them as well, right? Maybe the reset is presented to applications
like regular value changes, so the applications just update their views.

In case GNOME Settings Daemon doesn't start right from the beginning, at
the start of a new session, I think it would be good to adjust the fall-
back values anyway, though.

[Bug 704392] [NEW] Make Ubuntu's default settings the fallback of GNOME Settings Daemon

2011-01-18 Thread Sense Hofstede
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

When GNOME Settings Daemon crashes, the system reverts to some baked-in
defaults. The icons and settings used are not Ubuntu's default settings,
and don't look too pretty.

It would be better, I feel, if the baked-in defaults would be Ubuntu's
defaults, so that when the settings daemon crashes, your system still
looks like Ubuntu and not like GNOME 2.0.

[Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2010-11-27 Thread Sense Hofstede
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue. However, I'm
declining this as a paper cut because this bug is not trivially fixable.
A paper cut is a small usability problem in default and featured
applications that affect many users.

Please note that I'm marking this as Invalid for the One Hundred Paper Cuts
project ONLY.
I've opened a new task for Xorg in Ubuntu—which was missing—that makes this bug
show up on the radar of the people whose task it is to look after X. Previously
this tasked lacked, so the Ubuntu X developers couldn't have known this bug
existed. A task for xorg should have been added when this bug was marked as
Invalid for control-center.

[Bug 644133] Re: Rotation with Shotwell is not compatible with EOG

2010-11-27 Thread Sense Hofstede
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 644168 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/644168

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue. However, I am
rejecting this as a paper cut because a paper cut is a small usability
issue in default or featured applications that are easy to install. From
the conversation of the upstream developers it seems that this issue is
complex, affecting multiple applications, and is not trivial to fix.
Therefore it is not a paper cut.

This issue also is a duplicate of another bug report, bug #644168. It is
probably better to have one bug report for all applications where this
can go wrong. Please follow the conversation there from now on. Thanks!

[Bug 621927] Re: Embedded Terminal Emulator isn't giving a TERM variable

2010-10-12 Thread Sense Hofstede
I agree that this may be confusing for users because they don't have
(and can't be asked to have) notion of the relation between the way an
application acts and the libraries it uses. Launchpad may need some
improvement there. However, this is not an issue in Tilda and doesn't
need to be fixed by people working on Tilda. Therefore, it's correct to
mark this bug as Invalid for Tilda.

This bug hasn't been fixed upstream as far as I'm aware—even though it
has been reported upstream—but there is a task for the upstream bug open
as you can see above. There is a fix in the proposed updates section of
Maverick, and I hope that it will be made available for all Maverick
users shortly.

I understand that there might have been some confusion, we cannot expect
everyone to know everything about the way we work, but please don't make
changes to bug statuses without reading the bug's discussion and without being
sure what you're doing.
If you're not, just leave a comment and we'll be glad to process that
information. Thank you!

[Bug 448051] Re: The trash is not emptied anymore in Karmic when ejecting removable devices

2010-08-04 Thread Sense Hofstede
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut
should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu installation,
which affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug
can't be addressed as part of the project.

A quick glance on the upstream bug report seems to indicate that this bug is
most certainly not trivial to fix, and therefore it is not a valid paper cut.
For further info about papercuts criteria, please read
.

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as "Invalid" ONLY in the
papercuts project.

2010-08-04 Thread Sense Hofstede
Thank you for helping with making Ubuntu and Metacity better by
reporting this bug. I can confirm this issue, have found an upstream
report describing the same problem at
.

However, unfortunately I don't think that this bug is trivial enough to
fix to accept it as a paper cut. It's not that easy to implement this
feature, so that's where this bug report falls short of the criteria for
the paper cuts project.

I'm marking this bug as Invalid ONLY in the One Hundred Paper Cuts
project. I'm changing the status in Ubuntu to Triaged, since the bug is
confirmed and an upstream report has been found, and the status to
Wishlist, since this is an enhancement suggestion, not a regression.

  How it does work:
If I add some icons they are not realigned automaticly, instead I have to
deselect 'keep aligned' in the context menu (of the desktop) and then
reselect it.
  how it should work:
If anything happens with the icons on the desktop realign them to fit into

2010-08-03 Thread Sense Hofstede
The 'child-added' signal, which is currently the signal used by libappindicator
to check for newly added submenus is only emitted when a GtkMenuItem is
insterted in a GtkMenuShell. This means we need to add an extra signal for
submenus added using gtk_menu_item_set_submenu(), because that is what we need
to watch new submenus.

[Bug 612275] Re: [maverick] System crashes after login with "(process:268): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)"

2010-08-01 Thread Sense Hofstede
Note: manually executing 'sudo update-grub' and restarting doesn't solve
the problem for me.

staying on screen as the only remaining artefact of the graphical

  A help topic at

seems to suggest that running 'sudo update-grub' helps with this problem and
that it is related with the kernel update from Lucid's kernel to Maverick's.
That would explain why this issue appeared between Karmic and Lucid as well.
However, I'm not sure if it makes a difference to run update-grub manually,
since it must have been run before this crash when an update for the Maverick
kernel was released.

  I also see the
  "GLib-GObject-WARNING: invalid (NULL) pointer instance
  GLib-GObject-CRITICAL: g_signal_connect_data: assertion
`G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE (instance)' failed"
- errors in the syslog for several applications, including
'gdm-simple-greeter'. I see the same error on my other system each time I
initialise a GTK object in Python with PyGTK, or when running a PyGTK
application.

[Bug 458376] Re: Indicate the active keyboard layout in 'Keyboard Preferences'->Layouts

1) The connection is not obvious to everyone
2) The fact that the indicator already shows the currently active layout
doesn't mean we can't show it in the keyboard settings window as well.
3) The fact that the user "should (one day, may be not immediately:)
understand" the connection already demonstrates that the connection isn't
obvious to new users. They have to learn it. Why not make this small change and
help them understand the wretched UI that is the keyboard layout settings?

Would this be worth adding a patch for?

[Bug 604497] [NEW] Evolution doesn't provide GNOME Pilot (Palm) conduits anymore in Maverick

2010-07-12 Thread Sense Hofstede
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution used to provide a set of conduits for GNOME Pilot to synchronise e.g.
your Palm with the Evolution Data Server.
However, in Maverick the conduits are gone.

This isn't necessary, when I asked at the #evolution IRC channel on
GIMPNet about it I was told that the conduits were gone in Evolution
3.0, but should still be available in 2.30.

To a reasonably -- although shrinking -- group of people this would be a
large regression in terms of functionality. I would like to see the
conduits back, even if they would be put in a separate package.

[Bug 604027] Re: Checkbox label doesn't make sense

2010-07-10 Thread Sense Hofstede
Thank you for helping with making Ubuntu and its file manager better by
reporting this bug. I can confirm this issue and am marking this bug as
Triaged after reporting it upstream or linking it to a previously
reported bug.

However, I'm declining this as a paper cut since this is not a usability
issue with an often used part of Ubuntu, but instead a small string fix
affecting only the English speakers, not all users.

[Bug 602175] Re: glib-compile-schemas trigger not run after installation GCalctool

2010-07-06 Thread Sense Hofstede
I can confirm this bug myself.

It seems that this is a packaging issue, the GSettings scheme isn't compiled

However, not everyone is having this bug.

[Bug 70643] Re: 'Request Read Receipt' does not work at all

2010-07-02 Thread Sense Hofstede
I'm reopening this bug and confirming it myself.

It seems that Evolution does support adding read receipts, but that it
just doesn't pick it up. Sending mails from Outlook with receipt
requests doesn't trigger anything, and a closer inspection of the mail
generated by Evolution shows that it does add the "Disposition-
Notification-To:" header item.

This bug isn't Invalid because it is non-sense that you have to enable
something in the accounts settings for read receipts to work. The option
Christian was talking about is setting the default behaviour, but you
can also add read receipt requests manually via the Insert menu.

This bug seems to be that although Evolution does add read receipt
requests successfully to the mail header (can anyone confirm that it
works in Outlook, to be sure?) it doesn't do anything when a message it
receives requests a read receipt.

I have confirmed this bug on an up-to-date install of Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid
Lynx.

2010-06-27 Thread Sense Hofstede
Thank you for helping with making Ubuntu and its IM client Empathy
better by reporting this bug. It is most certainly a valid paper cut and
an accessibility issue as well.

I'm accepting this as a paper cut and am reporting this upstream if it
hasn't been done already. Thank you!

+ Can't change font size in Empathy

** Description changed:

- On empathy the default font size is too small with certain resolutions,
- and there isn't an easy way to set it properly (unless you edit the
- theme XML).
+ It is not possible to change the font size of Empathy chats in the
+ Empathy preferences window. You can only change it by adapting the
+ theme's XML file, but that is not what we want to force users to do,
+ especially when users have problems with their eye-sight and need larger
+ fonts.

  try these on terminal
- nvidia-settings --assign GreenBrightness=0.5
- nvidia-settings --assign BlueBrightness=0.5
- nvidia-settings --assign RedBrightness=0.5
+  nvidia-settings --assign GreenBrightness=0.5
+  nvidia-settings --assign BlueBrightness=0.5

expect all our users to know exactly how the paper cut project works.

The best place to discuss this would be either the Ayatana Discussion

I'm afraid it was decided this is not a valid paper cut and not something we
want to fix this way. Not only is the coding and the testing (don't forget the
testing for an issue like this!) that would be required to fix the bug too much
to make the bug a valid papercut, but Mark Shuttleworth also indicated that he
finds the current situation better than what a solution for this report would
give us:

this bug report. Thank you for that. Now I'm waiting for the responses
of some people with more experience with usability on the mailing list
to verify a few things and to make sure this really is a papercut. The
fix for this bug could potentially have a noticeable impact on the way
windows behave and therefore it should be properly discussed first.
Since the people I'd like to get an answer from aren't subscribed to
these bugs I've sent a mail to the Ayatana Discussion mailing list.

Accepting this as a papercut as this is a pretty disturbing abuse of
dialogues. :) Go away!

I'm not touching the other tasks as I'm not sure whether this should be
fixed in Notify OSD or in GNOME Power Manager.

[Bug 458376] Re: Indicate the active keyboard layout in 'Keyboard Preferences'->Layouts

2010-05-24 Thread Sense Hofstede
The keyboard preferences already create an tray icon once a second
keyboard layout has been added and that tray icon shows the current
keyboard layout. However, I do think that the Keyboard Preferences —
apart from needing a thorough redesign to remove all the UI clutter —
should indicate the currently active keyboard layout on the 'Layouts'
tab, so I'm accepting this as a papercut because this should be very
easy to fix.

[Bug 534477] Re: Closing "File Operations" into panel is redundant with minimizing

2010-05-24 Thread Sense Hofstede
I'm setting the status of this bug report to Incomplete as this needs
some discussion before we can decide what to do with it.

The points raised by the reported in the bug description are very valid
ones and I tend to lean to his solution; it's better to have a dialogue
open that cannot be closed than to use that hideous and pretty useless
AppIndicator icon.

A more long-term solution would be some kind of automatically hidden
transfer applet that could be used by Ubuntu One and Firefox as well as
Nautilus to show the progress of these kind of operations and allow to
cancel, pause and resume. That is out of the scope of this bug report
and I think that a good solution to bridge a possible gap between the
current situation and a possible transfer applet would be the solution
proposed by the original reporter.

[Bug 534334] Re: Gnome screen lock unlock issue when password is about to expire

2010-05-24 Thread Sense Hofstede
This is not a papercut as this is a complex bug report that everyday

complicated issue with 'gnome-screensaver'. I'm marking this bug as
Invalid for the One Hundred Paper Cuts project and will open a new task

[Bug 523421] Re: Ctrl-A works inconsistent in search box of Nautilus

2010-05-24 Thread Sense Hofstede
Thank you for helping with making Ubuntu and its file manager Nautilus
better by reporting this bug. I can confirm this issue on Lucid. What's
even more confusing is that even though Ctrl+A selects all files in the
directory when the cursor is in the search button, the enter button is
catched by the search box, which you wouldn't expect when another
keyboard actions just affected folders in a completely different view.

I've forwarded this bug upstream, so the work of the Bug Squad is done
so far and the status can be set to Triaged.

[Bug 441641] Re: Cluttered names for password entries in Seahorse

2010-05-24 Thread Sense Hofstede
This is not an issue with Seahorse, but with the applications that use GNOME
Keyring. I'm assigning this task to Gwibber as that is one of the applications
I can find cluttering the overview in Seahorse.
I'll open tasks for Telepathy and Evolution as well, they seem to use some
quite uninformative name as well.

I'm rejecting this as a papercut as this is not something that's trivial
to fix. You'd have to check all applications to make sure they register
nicely and if you want to fix if completely you might consider writing a
policy and finding ways to enforce it. That's out of the scope of the
papercuts project.

[Bug 502015] Re: Add "Paste Shortcut" to Nautilus context menus

2010-05-24 Thread Sense Hofstede
Thank you for helping with making Ubuntu better by reporting this suggestion.
I've found an upstream bug report and am linking the two bug reports to each
other.
I'm setting the status to Triaged as this bug report is now sufficiently looked
after by the Bug Squad for now. The importance is set to Wishlist because —
even though this is a valid usability issue — this bug report isn't so much
about an issue that hinders users, but more a suggestion for making the life of
users easier.

I am accepting this as a papercut as fixing this bug shouldn't be too hard
considering that the code can be simply copied from the middle-click drag menu
— why would this be harder than a right-click drag menu? I'd be in favour for
the third mouse button, really.
The status of the papercut is set to Wishlist as well, for all the same reasons.

[Bug 506973] Re: Inconsistent names are assigned when user adds more than 4 workspaces

2010-05-24 Thread Sense Hofstede
I can confirm this issue with LANGUAGE=C — LANGUAGE=nl_NL doesn't seem
to be affected by this — and with Compiz disabled. With Compiz enabled
no workspace names whatsoever are shown, apart from the persisting
tooltip "Currently virtual desktop: 'Workspace 1'", which appears no
matter what workspace you're on.

I'm setting this papercut to Triaged as this is indeed a valid issue for
those that are using a computer that doesn't support Compiz. However, as
a lot of users don't change the workspace settings this issue will most
likely remain relatively low-profile; I don't expect it to be selected
for any of the 10 rounds this cycle, or the next. This does not mean you
cannot fix this as a valid papercut and fixing this issue will appear on
the statistics.
