[Bug 2051383] Re: gnome-shell high CPU utilization when moving a high frequency mouse

2024-02-27 Thread Sergey Zolotarev
To answer your first question: I'm testing on a freshly booted system
with no applications running.

Regarding extensions:

After I disable the Desktop Icons NG extension (appears to be one of the
built-ins), peak CPU usage for gnome-shell goes from ~55% to ~35% when
moving over an empty desktop. When moving over an application such as
gnome-terminal, CPU usage for gnome-shell increases to ~60% both with
and without this extension (and also gnome-terminal itself consumes
about 25%).

Besides that I have Ubuntu Dock and Ubuntu AppIndicators - disabling
them didn't affect CPU usage.

evtest output attached.

It seems to also track mouse movement when playing games in full-screen
mode which reduces FPS. Is this normal?

[Bug 2051383] Re: gnome-shell high CPU utilization when moving a high frequency mouse

2024-02-04 Thread Sergey Zolotarev
I've noticed that at some point gnome-shell starts consuming twice that
amount of CPU resources when moving my mouse over the desktop, reaching
nearly 100%, i.e. to the point where the desktop experience is not good.

I'm not sure what it is that I do that triggers is. I've experienced
this 2 or 3 times in the last week.

[Bug 2051383] Re: gnome-shell high CPU utilization when moving mouse cursor

2024-01-29 Thread Sergey Zolotarev
1. Nope, the log is normal, nothing new is logged when moving the cursor
around

2. Razer DeathAdder V2. BTW switching to 60 Hz doesn't seem to change
anything. However, switching to an old cheap mouse decreases gnome-
shell's CPU usage down to ~10%.

3. Unfortunately that didn't help. I also had this line in my
/etc/environment before:

MUTTER_DEBUG_ENABLE_ATOMIC_KMS=0

Tried both with and without it.

[Bug 2051383] Re: gnome-shell high CPU utilization when moving mouse cursor

2024-01-29 Thread Sergey Zolotarev
I'm sorry, the 20% part was a bit of an overstatement, after observing
more I can say it's somewhere between 1% to 5%.

I have the following extensions active:
- Desktop Icons NG
- Ubuntu AppIndicators
- Ubuntu Dock

Disabling all extensions didn't change anything in my case.

Also I've noticed an interesting thing: when moving the cursor, CPU
usage goes up for gnome-shell AND for whatever process on top of whose
window I"m moving it. For example, if a Text Editor window is active, it
goes up for the gedit process.

If it helps, below are a few screenshots of "top" taken when I moved my
mouse, with Xorg and Wayland for comparison, and a video.

[Bug 2051383] [NEW] gnome-shell high CPU utilization when moving mouse cursor

2024-01-26 Thread Sergey Zolotarev

When I simply move my mouse cursor on an empty desktop, gnome-shell's
CPU usage goes up from 20% (when idle) to 60%, which causes stuttering.

I miss this feature as well. If I want to search, I would simply click
Ctrl-F like in web browsers or all the other normal file managers. I
don't understand why GNOME had to drop this feature.

[Bug 1926398] [NEW] Nautilus doesn't show folder name in Operations dialog

2021-04-27 Thread Sergey Zolotarev
Public bug reported:

When I copy a directory from one disk to another, Nautilus won't show
its name next to the progress bar. It simply says "Copying N files to
diskName".

I think it should say something like: "Copying N files in directoryName
to diskName".

Reason:

When you copy 2 big directories with a lot of files to the same
destination and want to know which one is which, you can't differentiate
between them since the directory name is not shown. If you want to
cancel one of them, you also don't know which X button to click.

See my attached screenshot.

It seems that Brasero is working now even if remove the s bit for

[Bug 1764096] [NEW] Brasero can't burn DVD because of permissions issue

2018-04-15 Thread Sergey Zolotarev
Public bug reported:

When trying to burn a data project with Brasero it exits with "unknown
error". In the log file it says the following:

BraseroWodim stderr: wodim: Operation not permitted. Warning: Cannot raise
RLIMIT_MEMLOCK limits.
BraseroWodim called brasero_job_get_flags
BraseroWodim stderr: wodim: Resource temporarily unavailable. Cannot get mmap
for 16781312 Bytes on /dev/zero.
BraseroWodim called brasero_job_get_flags
BraseroWodim stdout: TOC Type: 1 = CD-ROM
BraseroWodim stderr: HUP
BraseroWodim stdout: HUP
BraseroWodim process finished with status 11
BraseroWodim called brasero_job_error
BraseroWodim finished with an error
BraseroWodim asked to stop because of an error
error   = 0
message = "no message"
BraseroWodim stopping
Session error : unknown (brasero_burn_record brasero-burn.c:2859)

Current user is a member of the cdrom group.

As a workaround I set setuid bit on /usr/bin/wodim, after that Brasero
was able to burn the DVD.

sudo chmod +s $(which wodim)

As far as I remember DVD burning used to work on Ubuntu 17.10.

[Bug 1437411] [NEW] Keyboard layout indicator shows wrong layout

2015-03-27 Thread Sergey Zolotarev
Public bug reported:

I have two keyboard layous: English (en) and Russian (ru).

The problem is that when I switch to either of those via the keyboard
shortcut (Alt+Shift in my case), the layout indicator shows the opposite
layout. That is, I'm typing English letters, but it shows ru;
likewise, when it shows en the input language is actually Russian.

If I switch laoyout through the indicator itself, the language is set

2013-12-04 Thread Sergey Zolotarev
I don't know if this is the same issue but recently this started getting
even worse:

1. default input language for some reason is not English
2. as a consequence, the LED lights on when I switch to English (should be the
other way around)
3. Alt + Space doesn't work anymore (should switch to next input source but
doesn't switch anything)
4. switching language via indicator doesn't work
