Tried using the proposed gnome-settings-daemon package for a few days. The input method switch problem didn't appear at all. I think it's safe to say that it fixed this bug. Hope I can see the proposed package on the main repository soon. Thanks Mathew. I've just installed the proposed gnome-settings-daemon. The IM switching seems to be smoother. But since the problem came on- and-off randomly, it's hard to tell if it is really fixed unless I try it a few days. To make clear what has happen, this is the procedure to reproduce the problem: (1) I insert a VCD to my Ubuntu notebook (2) totem starts automatically. (3) totem pop-up an error message to me says, An error occured -The playback of this movie requires a VCD protocol source plugin which is not installed. I have the same problem in my Gutsy Gibbon (7.10). [Bug 28949] failed recording sound after gstreamer0.8-plugin is installed

It is very sure that sound recording fails sound after the package gstreamer0.8-plugin is installed. I have a Sony VAIO notebook (should be PCG—R505TS, I'll update the model number). I fresh install Ubuntu and test the sound recording function by gnome-recorder and gnome's recording volume display. They works at this moment. I then install gstreamer0.8-plugin with synaptic. Just after that, the sound recording function fails. gnome-recorder fails and gnome's recording volume display nothing as I shout to the mic.
