Re: [Bug 285119] Re: [packaging] The README file is uninteresting to the end user

2008-11-06 Thread Siegfried Gevatter (RainCT)
Nope. Documentation files should only be included in binary packages
if they have any useful information for the people using the package.
As the .deb's are already compiled and do not contain the source, it
doesn't make sense for them to explain how to compile them, and such a
README file only wastes disk space.

[Bug 262958] [NEW] Allow to choose which icons are displayed on the desktop

2008-08-30 Thread Siegfried Gevatter (RainCT)
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

The "Interface" tab has some space left so it would be the ideal place to add
the option to choose which icons (computer, home directory, trash, network and
mounted volumes) should be displayed on the desktop. As far as I know this can
currently only be done through gconf or using 3th party applications.

This idea has been originally suggested on Ubuntu Brainstorm

provided a draft of how it could be look. You can find it here:

[Bug 185171] Re: gnome-open has no manpage

2008-07-04 Thread Siegfried Gevatter (RainCT)
Hm... Raising the priority to "Low".

And yes, it's policy (and I've state more than once that *I* won't
advocate any package on REVU that is missing a manpage :)), but it is
only a "should" and not a "must". Quoting from /usr/share/doc/debian-
policy/policy.html/ch-docs.html#s12.1:

«Each program, utility, and function should have an associated manual
page included in the same package. It is suggested that all
configuration files also have a manual page included as well. Manual
pages for protocols and other auxiliary things are optional.

If no manual page is available, this is considered as a bug and should
be reported to the Debian Bug Tracking System (the maintainer of the
package is allowed to write this bug report themselves, if they so
desire). Do not close the bug report until a proper man page is
available.»

[Bug 174277] Re: Launchers under "System > Preferences" and "System > Administration" have similar names, leads to confusion.

2008-03-14 Thread Siegfried Gevatter (RainCT)
The proposed changed seem redundant to me (by the way, the
set/manage/configure/etc. words are already in the menu entries'
comments). IMHO, this will just make it more difficult to find stuff in
the menu (more text), would deprecate tons of documentation and doesn't
make any sense at all.

If there's some confusion in this area then what should be done is
better educating the users about it (about changing the categories to
"User Preferences" & "System Administration", that doesn't sound bad at
all, but in some languages using that will make the menu look awful, as
the translations can be long).

(Note: I'm speaking for myself and in no way representing the opinion of
Ubuntu's development team.)

[Bug 199014] Re: python-xml removal: please drop/replace (build) dependencies

2008-03-06 Thread Siegfried Gevatter (RainCT)
David Futcher: I'm not sure what the dependency there is for (on a fast
look the only .py file in the source is one called stats.py which
doesn't seem necessary for anything), but it would be good to
investigate why it was added before removing it (perhaps asking Michael
Bienia). Note that a python build dependency isn't really necessary
(even if it needed it), as python-xml already depends on python.

[Bug 195796] Re: "zenity --question" does not return code

2008-02-26 Thread Siegfried Gevatter (RainCT)
Thanks for your report, but I don't think this is a bug. The values that
zenity returns are exit values; it isn't text printed to the screen.

You can catch exit values in the terminal by executing "echo $?" just
after zenity; for example: «zenity --question --title "Alert" --text
"Microsoft Windows has been found! Would you like to remove it?"; echo
$?».

Re: [Bug 48679] Re: Birthdays before 1969 shows as birthdays in the future 2000+

2008-01-20 Thread Siegfried Gevatter (RainCT)
Version 2.21.5 is available in Hardy (the development version of
Ubuntu, which will be released in April). To get it into Gutsy this
would need a Stable Release Update, but I don't think it qualifies for
it (as it is no security vulnerability, crash nor important regression
from previous releases).

If you are really interested in using this new version I guess your
best option would be to request a backport. See

[Bug 118514] Re: 12-hour clock type not functioning in Gnome panel clock of zh_CN locale

2007-12-01 Thread Siegfried Gevatter (RainCT)
Thanks for your bug report, Rockallite. I can't find any option to
choose between 12 or 24 hour display on the preferences window for Gnome
Panel's clock. Might this option have been removed since you reported
this?

Regarding to your last message, I just want to remember that bugs are
mostly reviewed and fixed by volunteers in their free time, and there
are way more reports than we can handle, so quite a bit patience can be
required until someone looks at your bug. If you would like to help out
with bugs, have a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HelpingWithBugs.

Thanks again!

[Bug 160311] Re: Window Resize Difficult (Window Border Thickness)

2007-11-13 Thread Siegfried Gevatter (RainCT)
See my opinion on this below, but note that I can't speak in name of the
theme designers (in fact, I've no experience in this field):

I don't really think this is a bug nor that it's very several (I hadn't
heard anything like this until this report was created), but if some
users have problems with the currently provided themes a variant of the
human theme (or whatever it will now be called on Hardy) with thicker
borders (and perhaps other usability changes) would be adequate to be
also included in the default installation.

Of course adding an option to change the border thickness on the
properties dialog would be better, but as the GNOME guys said this isn't
that trivial, there's really more important stuff where time should be
spend than on patching this. Unless someone could come up with an easy
fix for it, of course.

Well, as I said this is just my opinion, and I'm not really sure about
what I'm speaking, so I think I'll just stop following this now and
leave it for someone else that knows more about this subjects.

If you have any other idea on how to fix this, let us hear it :).

[Bug 162225] Re: Nautilus won't ask before moving files to trash, even if "Ask before emptying

2007-11-12 Thread Siegfried Gevatter (RainCT)
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, the described behavior isn't a bug: the "or
deleting files" part of that sentence refers to the option below it,
"add a option to remove files without sending them to the trash first"
(it might be called something different, I'm translating from Catalan).

If you have a suggestion on renaming the "Ask before emptying..." option
in order to make it easier to understand feel free to report it to
