Re: [Bug 695637] Nautilus does not render icons for filetypes set by assogiate

2011-06-12 Thread Steve Faulkner
I upgraded to Natty about in May 2011. The problem persists without
change.

You may be interested to know: something interesting did occur in March 2011
for a short time while I was running Maverick. Correct file icons were
displayed one day. This was while my machine was finding difficulties due
to a shortage of disc space in my /home partition. Without much thought, I
downloaded a feature length movie onto my desktop. Following this, my
Gnome displayed a few strange effects that I attributed to shortage of
space on my /home partition. The strange effects included larger desktop
fonts which were not my configuration. Icons in Nautilus were also
displayed large, not my configuration. But my files were displayed in the
correct icons!!! After I uncluttered my desktop, my Gnome returned to
normal (I guess after the next reboot, I don't remember). Following this
episode, my guess was that shortage of diskspace made Gnome unable to
consult the user configuration and so uses a default config file. And that
Nautilus is able to behave as designed on this default configuration but is
unable to do so on the user config file. Maybe the user config file does
not save the user settings properly.

I do hope this is helpful. I would love this problem to be fixed.

Bets wishes, Steve.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or

issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May
you please test with that version and comment back if you're still
having or not the issue? Please have a look at
http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that
version. Thanks in advance and sorry for the late response.

This is a problem that I have noticed for a number of years on several
different machines and several different Ubuntus.

It is customary for a file manager to display documents of different
filetype as icons of associated with that filetype. Nautilus, by
default, my displays documents using a default document icon. This is
the case for .pdf files and .lyx files. [I have turned off the option
to display .pdf as a thumbnail]. I have experimented with only these
  two filetypes.

I used assogiate to set the filetype icons for .lyx and .pdf filetypes
to ones of my choosing. These save properly in assogiate. When I run
assogiate the new icons show for these filetypes and the machine has
been halted and booted again since I set them.

However, Nautilus persists with displaying the default icon for both
  .pdf and .lyx files.

Re: [Bug 474554] Re: links on desktop to folders, when opened, show default icon arrangement instead of that of the folder

2009-12-11 Thread Steve Faulkner
I have, just now, tried to re-create this bug. Happily, I am unable to do
so. I think there was a new version of Netscape recently. Possibly the bug
was inadvertantly fixed.

Many thanks,

2009/12/11 Pedro Villavicencio pe...@ubuntu.com

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
 better. Please answer these questions:
 1. Is this reproducible?
 2. If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug? Be as
 detailed as possible.
This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

Links on my desktop to folders elsewhere in the tree, when opened, do not
show the arrangement configuration of the original folder.

These links were created in the parent of the original folder then dragged
onto the desktop. The original had been given custom icons. Links correctly
acquired these and also acquired the sorting arrangement of the original
folder. However, as these links are dragged onto the desktop, they lose
this configuration as they are released. If configuration is repeated, this
is seen to have been lost the next time these links are opened. They then
 remain on my desktop showing a generic gnome icon instead of the custom;
and when opened, child folders are arranged in what seems to be the nautilus
default config. Nevertheless these configurations reappear correctly as
the link is dragged off the desktop back to the folder they came from or
some other folders but not all. All filing systems are ext3 but these other
folders seem consistently to be in a filing system of a partition mounted at
/home/steve/Mybox, whereas the desktop is a folder in the partition mounted
 at /home.

I am using an up to date karpic.
I expect folders and links to keep their own configurations.
