[Bug 1611433] Re: gdm does not start after upgrade from 14.04.4 LTS to 16.04.1 LTS
the system starts "gdm", but this maps to the default gdm selected by "update-alternatives". Since gdm is not installed, but lightdm is, update-alternatives automatically selects lightdm to start with: # update-alternatives --get-selections x-session-manager auto /usr/bin/startxfce4 x-window-manager auto /usr/bin/metacity This does indeed start lightdm and in tune lightdm starts lightdm-gtk-greeter. But after successfully logging in lightdm does not start the desktop! I have to switch to a console, login as user, stop lightdm, then start X11 with "startxfce4" to have my desktop shown. /etc/lightdm holds only: drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K Jan 30 2015 lightdm.conf.d/ -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 51 Dec 19 20:59 lightdm.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2.7K Apr 11 2016 lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 452 Oct 30 2014 users.conf the only changed file: lightdm.conf holds: [SeatDefaults] greeter-session=lightdm-gtk-greeter An other file in lightdm.conf.d has: [SeatDefaults] user-session=xubuntu But combining these into one does not change anything. lightdm starts, handles login, but does not start my desktop environment. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm3 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1611433 Title: gdm does not start after upgrade from 14.04.4 LTS to 16.04.1 LTS To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1611433/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Quite difficult. As soon as I move the mouse it may hover a window. This leads to a redraw of all windows, removing the artifacts from windows moved to the other screen. ;-) I'll try further. [Bug 805658] [NEW] various redraw errors with gnome
Public bug reported: Open a window (shell, browser, LibreOffice, ...) open some more windows, work. Move some of the windows from one desktop to the other. Parts of the moved windows will still display. Switching from one console to an other will remove these parts and redraw the whole screen. Sometimes this is true moving windows to top or bottom too. The old window moved down the stack is displayed further util the whole desktop is redrawn. From time to time this is with the taskbar too. The only way to force it redrawn is switch to an other console, then back. This is quite annoying ... Having the same here: clicking Other ... to log in with some user name not displayed in the list, there is no password prompt. Subsequent programs handling the login are given an empty password. It is possible to log in, but only with an account not having set a password. --- Sure you'll have to enable users to login with an empty password first :( Maybe related: setting password change time to 0 makes gdm prompt for a new password, after the old one correctly entered.
