[Bug 137598] Re: Screen brightness resets to default (maximum) on idle with AC plugged in

2008-02-29 Thread Tim Hull
This still happens on Hardy alpha 5. I posted a potential fix in this
bug - could devs look at this/potentially tidy up what I did? I'm kind
of "out of the loop" for Hardy (first discovered this in Gutsy testing
cycle), but I do plan to be back for the Intrepid Ibex test cycle
(hopefully it will be fixed then).

Could this be nominated for beta? It is still around, and it would be
pretty bad IMO to have this in the final product - particularly for an
LTS. I had a posted fix that works somewhat (towards the beginning of
this bug) - could the devs responsible for g-p-m take a look at this and
integrate it, improving if possible?

[Bug 118745] Re: Font sizes in Gutsy are affected by bad X.org DPI detection

2007-09-05 Thread Tim Hull
Please revert the changes made with respect to font defaults from Feisty
to Gutsy. As it stands, I have HUGE fonts in Gutsy, even though my DPI
is *technically* set correctly (114 dpi). The 11pt menu font only makes
this worse. As it stands, I always have to adjust the fonts after the
install - as do many people. A screenshot of the atrocious-appearance-
by-default is attached...

[Bug 140599] "Tap to click" option in Touchpad settings has no effect

2007-09-17 Thread Tim Hull
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

With the new updates to gnome-control-center in Gutsy, there is now options to
turn on/off tap-to-click, horizontal scroll, and vertical scroll.
However, checking "tap to click" does not enable tapping to click, even though
my touchpad (Apple touchpad on MacBook) supports it.
As a side note, I do have tapping disabled in my xorg.conf - but it seems like
the gnome-control-center options should still override this.

[Bug 140602] Add two-finger scrolling/two-finger tapping to Touchpad options

2007-09-17 Thread Tim Hull
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I did notice that options for touchpad tapping, vertical scrolling, and
horizontal scrolling are now included in the Mouse preferences.
This is definitely a great improvement over having to configure these options
in xorg.conf - hardly a trivial task for new Windows converts.

However, there are still a few options that can't be configured from here that
would be incredibly helpful to have here.
The particular options I am referring to are:

* Sensitivity options - this is one of the things Walt Mossberg complained
about in his Ubuntu review...
* 1/2/3 finger tap - allow these to be assigned to right, middle, or left click
as the user wishes
* two-finger scrolling - this is what Macs use by default, and the synaptics
driver allows for this.
* circular scrolling - also available through Synaptics driver
* corner taps - these are quite useful on my MacBook, as I errantly tap a lot
but still want an actual button for right-click

Also, it may be a good idea to use Mac-like defaults for appletouch
touchpads and Windows-like defaults on all other touchpads - that way,
everything behaves as the user expects it to (in most cases)...

[Bug 140610] Touchpad preferences panel doesn't appear with no xorg.conf

Public bug reported:

In the newly-updated version of gnome-control-center with touchpad

[Bug 118745] Re: Font sizes in Gutsy are affected by bad X.org DPI detection

The issue still isn't fully fixed for me. On my MacBook (13.3",
1280x800, intel graphics), the fonts for the user id on the login screen
and for application title bars are still gigantic. However, the rest of
the fonts are OK, and restarting X once after booting up will resolve
the issue with the title bars until the system is rebooted again. Seems
like a different DPI is being used when X is started through the init
process as opposed to through gdm AFTER the init process. Could someone

[Bug 113464] iPod support should include writing/synchronization

2007-05-08 Thread Tim Hull
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

After installing Feisty, I connected my iPod mini with the intent of
synchronizing my song library as I do in iTunes.
Upon connecting my iPod, rhythmbox appeared. It will read my iPod's songs, but
will not write songs to the iPod.
I am aware that this is the current limitation of rhythmbox, but it seems that
this should be a priority for the next release. Most
users would expect that iPod support would entail synchronization and copying
songs to the iPod, and not simply read support.
If rhythmbox is never going to have iPod write support, it seems like switching
to another media player for the Ubuntu default install
(such as banshee) or preconfiguring gtkpod to work with the rhythmbox library
would be worth considering.

2007-06-14 Thread Tim Hull
OK - I've managed to fix this for all OSs, and in all cases.

Make the following changes to the default Xorg.conf:

1. Change

Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"

in the Synaptics section to

Option "CorePointer"

2. Change

InputDevice "Configured Mouse"

at the end of the file to

InputDevice "Configured Mouse" "SendCoreEvents"

3. Move

InputDevice "Synaptics Touchpad"

to before the Configured Mouse Line

4. Restart X

After doing so, you should be able to adjust pointer acceleration as you
wish.

[Bug 121683] Font DPI in Gnome wrong in Gutsy on MacBook

2007-06-21 Thread Tim Hull
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu Gutsy on my MacBook, the default font size/DPI for Gnome is
wrong.

In the case of running on the MacBook hardware natively, this means
extremely large fonts - with Gnome defaulting to 112 dpi.

In the case of running on VMware Fusion with the same resolution, this
means extremely small fonts - with Gnome defaulting to 75 dpi.

On Feisty, both configurations default to 96 dpi and have reasonably-sized
fonts. Changing to 96 dpi in Gnome (Font control panel) in Gutsy makes the
fonts better, though they are still a bit larger than they are in Feisty with
the same setting. This is wrong on two counts - 1) the fonts should be set
reasonably after install as in Feisty
2) The actual DPI of the screen is 113 dpi - at that setting the fonts would be
HUGE

Filed bug against GNOME as fonts outside of GNOME/GNOME apps are fine
and the issue hinges on GNOME's DPI setting...

[Bug 118745] Re: default desktop/panel menu font sizes too small

2007-06-24 Thread Tim Hull
On my system (13 inch MacBook - dual-boot installed w/Boot Camp), this appears
to detect the DPI correctly. as being 112 dpi.
However, the resulting fonts, when using my display's native 1280x800
resolution, are huge. I think the issue may not necessarily be the
wrong DPI being detected - it's that the font is a bad size with the right DPI
selected! In the meantime, I've reverted to the Feisty settings
(96 dpi, 10 pt font in Gnome), and everything looks normal again.

[Bug 118745] Re: Font sizes in Gutsy are vulnerable to bad X.org DPI detection

2007-06-28 Thread Tim Hull
In my experience, changing the DPI does have an effect . However, what I'm
finding is that even with the *correct* DPI values, the fonts can be way too
big.
In my case, using the correct value (112 dpi) causes my MacBook to have fonts
that are intolerably large. 96 dpi, on the other hand, results
in fonts that are of a more reasonable size. I have a separate bug open to
this effect - though some systems are certainly detecting the wrong DPI, I'm
finding the fonts are bad even with the *right* DPI!

OK - I've managed to fix this for all OSs, and in all cases.

Make the following changes to the default Xorg.conf:

1. Change

Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"

in the Synaptics section to

Option "CorePointer"

2. Change

InputDevice "Configured Mouse"

at the end of the file to

InputDevice "Configured Mouse" "SendCoreEvents"

3. Move

InputDevice "Synaptics Touchpad"

to before the Configured Mouse Line

4. Restart X

After doing so, you should be able to adjust pointer acceleration as you
wish.

[Bug 118745] Re: Font sizes in Gutsy are affected by bad X.org DPI detection

2007-10-05 Thread Tim Hull

Re: [Bug 140599] Re: "Tap to click" option in Touchpad settings has no effect

2007-09-17 Thread Tim Hull
Just tested again, and I can confirm that the option does work without
tapping disabled in xorg.conf. It does, however, not work *with* tapping
disabled in xorg.conf.

[Bug 140610] Touchpad preferences panel doesn't appear with no xorg.conf

2007-09-17 Thread Tim Hull
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

In the newly-updated version of gnome-control-center with touchpad
configuration options, touchpad options don't appear if the xorg.conf
is deleted. As X.org now fully supports running without an xorg.conf file,
this should probably be resolved.

[Bug 118745] Re: Font sizes in Gutsy are affected by bad X.org DPI detection

2007-10-05 Thread Tim Hull
The issue still isn't fully fixed for me. On my MacBook (13.3",
1280x800, intel graphics), the fonts for the user id on the login screen
and for application title bars are still gigantic. However, the rest of
the fonts are OK, and restarting X once after booting up will resolve
the issue with the title bars until the system is rebooted again. Seems
like a different DPI is being used when X is started through the init
process as opposed to through gdm AFTER the init process. Could someone
fix this? It is a tad annoying...

[Bug 140599] Re: "Tap to click" option in Touchpad settings has no effect

2007-10-05 Thread Tim Hull
There is no issue as long as the touchpad is in the xorg.conf. From my
understanding, xorg.conf-less operation is not officially supported in
Gutsy, so closing this.

Re: [Bug 118745] Re: default desktop/panel menu font sizes too small

2007-06-26 Thread Tim Hull
The bug I filed is that if I do this - set the DPI to the calculated size -
the fonts are gigantic.
That is why I don't have it set that way...
