[Bug 849909] Re: g-s-d dies on starting

2011-09-23 Thread Toby Smithe
Hello? I know I'm not the only one with this bug:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1789452

I wish I could help out; unfortunately, I have neither the skills nor
the time immediately to hand. It just seems that bug reporting has
become a futile process: unless it is a problem that either affects such
a large number of people it is impossible to ignore, or a problem that
personally affects a developer, it seems that there is no motivation
even to triage (let alone fix!). I know I haven't paid for support, and
I know I'm not helping out particularly with the bugs I report, but it
is frustrating that an evident lack of engineering and QA resources
manifests itself in this way; as I said, I'm not the only person with
this bug.

Apologies for the confusion; I was not refuting the patch, but merely
responding to the mention of the time passed since my initial report.
The patch works for me, but as I said earlier, I cannot ascribe that
solely to the patch, as the situations in which the applets would
rearrange arise far less often these days.

Regards, and thanks for the continued effort,

Ahh, this is an old haunt! Must say, I feel it's my duty, after all you

this bug still affects me.

But, as the system is much more stable than it was three and a half
years ago, this bug affects me less.

[Bug 178652] Re: No access to non-default sound format profiles

2008-04-25 Thread Toby Smithe
Err, this is a totally valid bug. I have all the codes installed.
Plainly, the profiles do not work. Ripping a CD tells me that the
cdlossy profile cannot be found. Well, of course it can't; I can't even
select it from the list. I don't even necessarily know that I want that
profile. I just want mp3 output :) Creating profiles does not help: even
if they are added to the gnome-audio-profiles-properties list, they do
not appear in the drop-down for selection. Occasionally, when they have
done, they do not allow me to rip anything.

[Bug 178652] Re: No access to non-default sound format profiles

2008-03-02 Thread Toby Smithe
I can confirm this bug on Gutsy. Whilst there seem to be profiles for
mp3 active (by default, though I am not sure what package provides
them), they are not selectable from withing the Sound Juicer preferences
drop-down list. This also applies to the "Voice" profiles, too, and any
profiles manually created.

[Bug 145524] Re: Splash screen typo error

2007-11-18 Thread Toby Smithe
I do not believe this is the intention of the image. The image is there
to inform the user that the software was released as a "release
candidate", not a "release condadidate". Thus this is not "fine", and
the bug is valid.

The bug report referenced above has not been updated since December
2006, so I don't think any activity will be happening there; let alone
any "tracking".

I would confirm this report, but I don't believe I have the authority,
so I'm setting it back to "New".

[Bug 122855] evolution-alarm-notify crashed with signal 5 in g_logv()

2007-06-28 Thread Toby Smithe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Could this be linked with bug 122389 and bug 122683?

I was not aware of having set any alarms, nor running this process
manually. However, I believe that it runs as a part of my default
GNOME/Evolution session. Is this correct?

[Bug 105093] Evolution has "Submit Bug Report" and "Report a Problem" menu options under "Help"

2007-04-10 Thread Toby Smithe

Under the "Help" menu, there are options to both "Report a Problem" and
"Submit a Bug Report". As the "Report a Bug" system menu item was
changed to "Report a Problem", "Submit a Bug Report" should be removed
for reasons of jargon and confusion.

[Bug 95865] Re: gnome-settings-daemon conflicts with xfce daemon over keyboard handling

2007-03-26 Thread Toby Smithe
Well, the new title does not effectively describe the bug. There is no
conflict (as I would not be running XFCE and GNOME at the same time),
nor does XFCE have such a daemon that I am aware of. (As I said in my
original report). Perhaps having a setting to allow gnome-settings-
daemon to not try and take control of, say, the keyboard settings, and
let the user set it up himself via an Xmodmap.

[Bug 95865] gnome-settings-daemon thinks it's God, but doesn't do a very good job of it

2007-03-25 Thread Toby Smithe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

gnome-settings-daemon seems to think it's in charge of every preference
that I'd like to set on my computer. While in theory this may be a good
thing, and I agree that if implemented properly it could be, in practice
it is not, as it gets things wrong. My main qualm at the moment is that
where XFCE (which does not have an omnipotent daemon) lets me use my
multimedia keys to control any application that supports them (with the
aid of an Xmodmap), gnome-settings-daemon seems to decide that although
the keys are recognised, it will prohibit me from using them for
anything. This appears to be a regression from Edgy.

2007-02-20 Thread Toby Smithe
I can confirm this on Feisty. Rhythmbox is erratic, and while amaroK
used to capture the keys without focus, that fails now under GNOME.
Under XFCE everything is good. (/me adds this to his list of complaints
that gnome-settings-daemon takes control).

[Bug 56726] [Edgy] CD burning broken in nautilus

2006-08-17 Thread Toby Smithe
Public bug reported:

I'm surprised I couldn't find another bug on this topic, but I didn't;
and so I filed this one. I'm sure it's also known about, but I'd like to
be sure I know what's going on.

When I try to burn a CD, I don't get the option to burn using my CD
writer - only to an image. There's not much point burning an image to an
image, so I'm guessing this is broken. It mightn't be nautilus though -
could be udev or something (but I don't know anything about that). Do
correct me if I'm wrong.

It is installed; as I said, by rolling back to what appeared to be an
earlier version using one of aptitude's suggested solutions, I managed
to install libgtk2.0-dev. However, this now seems to be the latest
version, as aptitude install libgtk2.0-dev showed no updates to the
package. The version is (of libgtk2.0-dev) 2.8.17-1ubuntu5, and (of
libglib2.0-0) 2.10.2-1ubuntu3. Shouldn't they be the same - either
2.8.17 or 2.10.2?

To overcome this, I just used aptitude to install a version that worked
- I'm sorry, I can't tell you what version that was.

I'm running on i386 (i686 kernel for my Pentium M 725 - Dell Inspiron

[Bug 49220] [Edgy] Broken packages while trying to install libgtk2.0-dev

2006-06-10 Thread Toby Smithe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-dev

sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libgtk2.0-dev: Depends: libglib2.0-dev (>= 2.8.5) but it is not going to be
in stalled
Depends: libpango1.0-dev (>= 1.10.0-2) but it is not going to
b e installed
Depends: libatk1.0-dev (>= 1.6.1-2) but it is not going to be
i nstalled
Depends: libcairo2-dev but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libxcursor-dev but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libxfixes-dev but it is not going to be installed
