[Bug 1880305] Re: Failed to mount Windows share: Software caused connection abort

2020-05-23 Thread Tony Pursell
Have created a workaround which works:

1. created directory ~/.smb
2. copied /etc/samba/smb.conf to it
3. added 'client min protocol = NT1' to [global] section.

as suggested in bug #1879776

[Bug 1880305] [NEW] Failed to mount Windows share: Software caused connection abort

2020-05-23 Thread Tony Pursell
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading from 19.10 to 20.04 I cannot access folders on my NAS.

What happens:

In Nautilus (1:3.36.2-0ubuntu1) I do the following

1. Go to Other Locations
2. Click on Windows Network
3. Double Click on WORKGROUP
4. Double Click on DYLAN (the NAS at 192.168.1.5)
5. Double Click on public (a folder that does not require a password)

I get the error message 'Unable to access location. Failed to mount
windows share: Software caused connection abort'.

What should happen:

Following the above steps the public folder opens and shows the files
and folders in it.

My backups using Deja Dup also get this error.

[Bug 1824641] [NEW] Blank screen after booting 4.4.0-145

2019-04-13 Thread Tony Pursell
Public bug reported:

Having run update on my i386 Asus Eee PC with Intel Atom N550 Dual core
CPU running 16.04.06 LTS, it installed linux 4.4.0-145. If I boot this
kernel everything is blank. Just a black screen. If I change to a
terminal using Ctrl Alt F4 it is still a black screen but I can
carefully type in my user name and password and then the shutdown
command and it shuts down

Using Advanced options in grub neither the upstart or the recovery
option work. The screen is still black. The recovery option does,
however, display the boot sequence before going black.

I can boot the previous kernel 4.4.0-143 and all is OK.

[Bug 1588994] Re: Location not working since OTA-11 on BQ 4.5

2016-07-28 Thread Tony Pursell
I think you may be right, Henry. I went out on a walk along a country
lane this afternoon and decided to try out uNav. I don't think that app
expects the device to have a location to hand to it when it starts. Your
press an icon in the header to determine you current location, and it
worked. As I walked up the lane my position changed automatically. I
then found that Google and Here maps showed up my location automatically
on start up without complaining. Nearby scope also began to work.

So is all well? Probably, but location is a bit flaky. I did a restart
and initially Google maps complained that location wasn't working, but
in a minute or two it came up with my location without any further
action on my part. Nearby scope needed a refresh for it to find me.
So, grudgingly, I'm going to say that location is working (although not
as seamlessly as on my Android phone).

[Bug 825775] Re: Siliencing NickServ/ChanServ

2013-04-12 Thread Tony Pursell
I agree with you Max, and we shouldn't have to get used to it.

@Bilal Empathy and xchat are quite different. Xchat is just an IRC
client and when you go there you expect IRC windows to be opened when
you join a particular room. Empathy, on the other hand has a general
log in to all IM channels the user has defined and is not at that time
joining a particular room. Maybe Empathy should defer logging in to IRC
servers until the user joins a room.

[Bug 825775] Re: Siliencing NickServ/ChanServ

2012-04-12 Thread Tony Pursell
I find this irritating as well. All accounts have a log in procedure.
It is only IRC that has a chat window opened, but it is a clearly
defined procedure where Empathy gives a password in response to a chat
message. Empathy is already doing something special with these messages
from NickServ, so I don't see why it shouldn't close the chat window
after the 'You are now identified for username' message.

Can you go to the Skype Options and select the Video Devices page and
tell us what it displays under 'Select Webcam'.

Have you got more than one web cam listed?

Also can you test it using Cheese (you may have to install it).

Its is worth noting that both Skype and the Googletalk-browser plugin
are proprietary software that may have capabilities to recognise web
cams that other Linux programs cannot.

[Bug 869901] [NEW] Keyboard not enabled at login screen

2011-10-07 Thread Tony Pursell
Public bug reported:

I an using an Asus EEPC 1015PEM running Natty for some months.
Everything was OK until a few days ago. Now the keyboard is not enabled
at the login screen. I can use the touchpad and its mouse keys to
select myself from the list of users, but I cannot type my password.
Only the Esc key seems to be working. Pressing other keys gives
nothing.

The same situation is found with a USB keyboard plugged in and with the
on-screen keyboard enabled.

The physical keyboard is OK. It has been tested at the GRUB boot
screen, in Windows 7, using a live 11.04 on a USB stick (which has a
login screen) and in Recovery Mode, which is being used now to create
this bug report (via netroot su tony strartx terminal ubuntu-bug

[Bug 657453] Re: Can't Establish Video Calls on MSN

2011-06-01 Thread Tony Pursell
Hi

I have been following this problem over many recent versions of Ubuntu.
The position as far as I understand it is that the new MSN P2P method of
working has been implemented but there still are problem with NAT
traversal that haven't been resolved yet. This means I can have a full
AV chat with my wife, who is on our local network in the same room, but
not with my brother over the wide area network in another town.

My information comes from a recent enquiry I made on #papyon on irc.

[Bug 657453] Re: Can't Establish Video Calls on MSN

2011-06-01 Thread Tony Pursell
By recent versions of Ubuntu, I mean the last 4 or 5 versions of
Ubuntu - am currently on version 11.04.

The comment about MSN removing its servers is very old news. I don't
know why the Protocols Support list still refers to it as it certainly
is not the current reason why MSN AV chat is non-functional over a WAN.
As I said, it is completely functional on a local area network.

It is my understanding that both Empathy and aMSN use the package
python-papyon. So when aMSN 0.99 arrives with full AV chat, Empathy
will have it too.

The papyon project is at

http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/papyon

if you want to follow this up.

As far as I know, this is not true. That FAQ is out of date. Work has
since been done to enable the new peer to peer MSN service in empathy
and was made available in Ubuntu version 10.10.

Are you using 10.10? If you are, please say if this bug is still
affecting you.

Public bug reported:

[Bug 603526] Re: new conversation notifications are hidden until I open the conversation

2010-09-07 Thread Tony Pursell
My testing (in Lucid) seems to shown that notifications happen when the
windows are minimised to the task bar, but not when when they are
unminimised and out of focus. Evolution provides new mail notifications
when it is out of focus and unminimised. But things are more
complicated with Empathy as there is a Contact List window and a
possible Conversation window. If the Conversation window is open, then
that should control notifications, but if the Conversation Window is not
open, then the Contact List window should control notifications. I
guess you guys have probably worked that one out already.

[Bug 587689] Re: No window decoration if Visual Effects = None

2010-06-01 Thread Tony Pursell
Hi Leo

Yes, I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid, and after that upgrade I could not
boot normally (only in rescue mode using a Karmic kernel and then only
in a console). So the /home that I retained, when I re-installed, was
from that dist-upgrade.

In /home I have profiles for myself and my wife. So I tried my wife's
login and there is no problem with the Window Decoration. It is there
and Visual Effects are set to None. My wife does not use this Ubuntu
installation, so her profile is very much the default one that was
installed when I had this PC in Sept 06.

Do you want me to set up a completely new profile?

[Bug 528740] Re: Error when adding new account

2010-03-07 Thread Tony Pursell
Having had to redo my Live system on the USB key, this problem came
back. It looks like empathy tries to create a 'default' keyring and
sort of fails. Possibly because the 'default' keyring is already there
and new one is created called 'default2'. Then another one called
'default3', and so on. I deleted all these extra keyrings and then
empathy worked OK. Sorry to be a bit vague, but I didn't keep a
detailed record of what happened. If you need that, please ask, but I
don't want to go back and re-create the USB key unless I have to. It
takes a long time as there are hundreds of updates to install.

[Bug 528740] Re: Error when adding new account

2010-03-01 Thread Tony Pursell
I assume that the live CD has been updated somewhat since I wrote it to
a USB key.

As the USB key has persistent storage, I can update it with update
manager, so I suppose that some other update cured the fault because
this problem has completely gone away for me.

I will boot into Lucid with the USB key and retest. I will then run
update manager and report back if there is any regression.

[Bug 519551] Re: Video call to/from MS Messenger contact does not work

2010-02-28 Thread Tony Pursell
Following a downloaded update, Alpha 3 now allows creation of MSN
accounts. But video calls to/from MS Messenger still do not work.

Functionality of the remote was verified first by establishing a video
call call from MS Messenger in Windows.

A debug is attached as requested above. There were two or three
attempts at connecting to the remote from Ubuntu and one attempt at
connecting to Ubuntu from the remote. This produced the following
message at the remote end:

Messenger is not available right now. Please try again later.
(0x80ee001c)

Empathy version is: 2.29.91-1ubuntu2

[Bug 528740] Re: Error creating MSN account

2010-02-27 Thread Tony Pursell
So this seems to be a general bug when adding a new account, which, of
course I have to do because I put the release on to a USB stick (with
persistent storage) with no existing accountss.

So it is a serious regression from the version in Alpha 2.

[Bug 267371] Re: [gvfs] [smb] Damaged OpenOffice files from samba shares

2010-01-31 Thread Tony Pursell
Can you try a test with my Polly2.odg? Copy it onto your NAS share,
open it in OOo, delete two frames, save it. Close OOo. Open the saved
file from Nautilus by double clicking it. Is it OK?

Do you know what OS your NAS box uses?

[Bug 267371] Re: [gvfs] [smb] Damaged OpenOffice files from samba shares

2010-01-30 Thread Tony Pursell
I have tested using Karmic and OpenOffice.org-core 1:3.1.1-5ubuntu1
(taken from the Help About box). My standard test using the file
Polly2.odg (see #14 above) opened from a Windows XP SP3 network share,
deleted 2 frames and saved back to the network share. I did not find a
problem.

I did the update you referred to first.

The remote network share was mounted first as a CIFS filesystem by
accessing it in Nautilus.

How are are you NAS box's shares mounted? Is you OOo version the same?
