Works as expected in Gedit <-- Name is highlighted, starting to type changes name. Does not work: Firefox <-- Name is highlighted, starting to type does nothing. Public bug reported: This has bugged me for many years now, and figure as long as the kinks are being worked out on this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1971516 I should bring it up: When you download a file from a browser, the save dialog pops up, and the filename in the name box at the top is highlighted (just the name, not the extension), which is the universal symbol for "I'm highlighted, start typing and you'll overwrite me!" However, typing does nothing unless you click the box, at which point the cursor is in the middle of the name, and you have re-highlight if you want to rename the file. This is still confusing to me after many years. Expected behaviour: Either: Filename is highlighted and you can start typing to replace the name (but not the extension) Or: Filname is NOT highlighted by default, indicating you are not ready to edit. Updated the title because I think I figured out the key (and it looks like others have too!). If you navigate through the file system, the "name" box at the top becomes greyed out, and when hit "save" nothing happens. If you click into the name box again to make it active, it saves as expected. If you click into one of the shortcut folders on the left (Downloads, Home) it can save because the filename box remains active. Can't. I fixed the typo. Nothing remarkable in journalctl... And it's a bit random: some subfolders I can download to. Others not. Howdy, here are my answers: • Is that an issue only for the save dialog? Not sure what you mean, but I only notice this when using the "download" / "save file" function from a browser. Nautilus is fine otherwise. • Can you copy files to this directory using the filemanager? Yes, in fact that's what I have to do: download to /tmp then in the file manager manually move it to the folder I want it in. • Is your user directory a normal local directory or is it a remote directory or an encrypted one? Normal. Directory structure is normal, fresh install of Ubuntu 22.04 All on local HD, no encryption.
