[Bug 588155] Re: randomly gnome-settings-daemon fails to start

2011-03-15 Thread Troy James Sobotka
I've recently been seeing this happen across two different motherboards.

I hadn't seen it appear at all previously.

I'll wager that on some level this is a race condition. It occurred zero
times with a quad core and about 50% of the time with my six core. This
happened on identical hardware with the only difference being the
processor.

[Bug 305546] Re: Nautilus crashing/freezing when opening folder with svg file

2010-04-14 Thread Troy James Sobotka
And SVG thumbnails art still dragging the entire file browser down,
sometimes without it given the ability to restart itself.

This is as of _Lucid_ 14th April.

I'd say that it is fair to suggest that there are likely zero audience
members that expect standard thumbnailing activity to drag down their
entire desktop. Symptoms of this _exact_ bug include:

1) Crashing Nautilus. As of Lucid, Nautilus attempts to restart on its
own now.

2) Freezing Nautilus requiring a pkill on the CLI.

3) Freezing the entire system. This requires switching to a virtual
terminal and pkill'ing Nautilus.

This is a default thumbnailer on the system so one could only hope that
this bug gets the proper attention it requires.

2009-12-30 Thread Troy James Sobotka
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 438484 ***

It seems illogical in todays day and age that a thumbnailer crashes the
entire desktop file browser system.

Confirming here. The thumbnailer crash bugs have been around for at
least four or five releases. Is there anything we can do to alter the
way that Nautilus thumbnails so that a thumbnail bug doesn't drag down
the entire system?

[Bug 438484] Re: Crash when thumbnailing an SVG file

2009-12-30 Thread Troy James Sobotka
Nautilus needs to be insulated from thumbnailers crashing the entire
system.

As it is now, and has been for at least four or five releases, I can
easily drag down my entire desktop file browser via an SVG thumbnail or
video codec thumbnail.

Medium seems like a low priority given that these sorts of bugs
completely prevent Nautilus from starting up - or worse - if the file is
located on the audience member's desktop. It results in a system that
is unrecoverable in terms of browsing a system, searching for files,
etc.

Is there a way of preventing a thumbnailer from crashing Nautilus? It
would seem more logical to patch Nautilus at the source and have a
generic icon displayed instead of having the entire system get stuck in
a loop of crashing.

[Bug 479810] [NEW] GTK+ / WACOM / XINERAMA: Incorrect offset makes Wacom unusable

2009-11-09 Thread Troy James Sobotka
Public bug reported:

Summary: A well known and understood bug that has yet to be fixed
upstream. When using GTK with Xinerama and mapping the Wacom tablet to
a single screen, all Wacom devices suffer from incorrect offsets between
the cursor and the Wacom level input device. In short, while the Wacom
device correctly uses the entire single screen desktop region, the
underlying GTK insists that the tablet is still halved (or whatever
screen to tablet ratio) between the two monitors.

2008-02-22 Thread Troy James Sobotka
@Mihai

This isn't about changing the look and feel, this is about the

1) The window's grab area should be separated from its aesthetic border
trim area ( as per Jonathan Kerls suggestion at

[Bug 16128] Re: Wide color channels in Gimp

2007-12-09 Thread Troy James Sobotka
I wanted to bump this bug report with the news that Cinepaint is now
considered unmaintained in Debian / Ubuntu and is possibly (?) not going
to be included in Hardy.

I will say beyond a shadow of a doubt that lacking _any_ application to
do realtime manipulations in interfaces that are _close_ to Photoshop
will hurt Ubuntu uptake.

Every single DSLR camera on the market today offers the ability to shoot
in RAW mode. While wonderful tools such as dcraw exist to push this
into a usable open TIFF format, there will be no 'Photoshoplike' tools
to manipulate the data. This is problematic.

Blender can and will operate on these bit depths, but differ
dramatically in the ease of slider based interfaces that most 'average'
DSLR users would probably prefer.

The GIMP developers have put 16 bits per channel and greater resolutions
on the unimportant list for too long I fear, and we are now going to
be faced with the very real smashing of reality (DSLR users almost
exclusively use RAW manipulations in the deeper colour depth and they
are becoming ubiquitous) that Free Software and Linux are falling _far_
behind mainstream dollar store applications.

I urge anyone capable to attempt and seek resolution on this issue. It
is _not_ a minor point as this also has huge implications in the feature
film industry and its adoption of Linux. Having tools and
infrastructure that operate on professional level bit-depths formats is
vital to Free Software uptake, health, and simple practical 'every day'
uses.

Upon further review, it appears that Evince is not exporting the file to

In this instance, choosing the Save as... in Evince failed to save the

Is this in fact perhaps two possible bugs? One for the Evince not
exporting as per file extension and one for Eye of Gnome not identifying

[Bug 160311] Re: Window Resize Difficult (Window Border Thickness)

2007-11-13 Thread Troy James Sobotka
It is relatively painless to change the dimensions of the surrounding
border for themes. That said, you may end up with a gaudy looking heavy
window, but I assume that you don't care about that.

To change border widths, simply open up the theme's Metacity XML file.
For example, Human's theme is located in
/usr/share/themes/Human/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml

The stanza in question should be apparent:
  distance name=left_width value=5/
  distance name=right_width value=5/
  distance name=bottom_height value=5/

Try mucking with the values until you get something you are happy with.
Unfortuanately, resolution dependency still plagues much of Gnome.

[Bug 112665] Re: /usr/share/gnome/gnome-panelrc fails to impact theme

2007-10-13 Thread Troy James Sobotka
No.

Unfortunately, the gtkrc will not affect the panel properly. For
example, if you tried to have gtkrc draw a 'flat box' or a custom drawn
element for the panel, it will not apply using the class overrides.

Apparently the gtkrc for the panel exclusively was to handle this, but
has gotten lost somewhere along the line.

In order to fully control the panel's theming, I can see no other way to
accomplish this. The current method of introducing a panel image is
extremely kludgy and doesn't elegantly handle all of the possibilities.
As far as I can see from the research, Debian has somehow managed to
bork the file. I would need to test another variation of Linux away
from the Debian tree to be certain. The list reading however, indicates
that this might be the case.

[Bug 112665] Re: /usr/share/gnome/gnome-panelrc fails to impact theme

2007-05-13 Thread Troy James Sobotka
After much searching on the various forums and such.

According to the default text contained in the gnome-panelrc file, it
clearly states:

#
# This file is intentionally left empty. You may add gtk theme
# definitions here and they will only apply to the GNOME Panel.
#

However, although this is listed through various links and suggestions
as a viable way to properly affect the panel (unlike the default pixmap
themeing which is rather kludgy), there appears to be a problem on
Debian based systems regarding this. For example, the following users
also have this problem:

http://gnomesupport.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6636start=15sid=fbf27043e3bbe00da4f80f9188a62dc9

Various other distributions often cite utilizing the gnome-panelrc as a
viable way to theme the panel.

Hope this helps. This is a very important piece of design to properly
affect the panel itself. For example -- as it currently stands, if one
uses the pixmap engine for example, FLAT_BOX nor BOX can be used to
scope a class to affect the panel. Reportedly, the gnome-panelrc
_would_ permit this.

Thank for looking into it Seb.

2007-03-21 Thread Troy James Sobotka
Hrm... Daniel?

This looks suspiciously like either the SVG isn't registered for the

being used instead of the SVG.

[Bug 80946] Re: desktop-effects human variant would be nice

2007-02-21 Thread Troy James Sobotka
I think you are entirely missing the point. Read the topic of the bug.

The idea is to have a _Human_ variant.

This means a very restricted set of design guidelines (albeit inferred
as opposed to well documented) in order to fit in.

The sources are provided and they are SVG which means that the
antialiasing isn't really an issue at all as it is a product of a
relatively good algorithm.

There are people of two large general mindsets -- A) twiddle the heck
out of something that is completely irrelevant to the average user or B)
get the 'big picture' in place. In my eyes, the latter is more
important than the former.

Many people spend long hours twiddling the heck out of their work and
fail to realize that ultimately, the average end user (lets propose
21-36) could care less about the effort the individual has exerted as it
simply isn't a factor.

Get the broad strokes down, then polish later. To that end, there is
enough foundation building material within this thread to at _least_
alleviate the bug and work towards a more consistent presentation. The
second 10 minute icon was an attempt to address what Etienne highlighted
as a thematic issue.

Icons that are visible for less than 0.5% of your viewing day should
probably be evaluated accordingly.

[Bug 80946] Re: desktop-effects human variant would be nice

2007-02-06 Thread Troy James Sobotka
Sorry, yes, I probably should have stated that.

I developed that icon based off of the Canonical SVG monitor icon
present in

/usr/share/icons/Human/Scalable

My contribution to the icon is obviously completely subject to whatever
license is required by Ubuntu / Canonical.

I whipped it up in about 15 minutes, but again, it is better than what
we currently have (being the Fedora knockoff.)

The SVG renders properly on GNOME and under Inkscape. Firefox will
corrupt the SVG render.

If there is a specific size issue, it could probably be modified quite
easily.

Hope this was helpful.

[Bug 37603] Re: Ensure that foreground and background color combinations provide sufficient contrast when viewed by someone having color deficits

2007-01-28 Thread Troy James Sobotka
However, if we can provide universal access with the default theme

Sorry, there is no such creature.

We need to focus on the fact that users fall into very strict needs.
Specifically, this is no different than language based restrictions (and
the related motifs that work only for particular cultures.)

Perhaps we should consider some form of easily accessed hotkey
combination or like tool that would flip Ubuntu into a particular
accessibility needs mode? This would make it far easier for someone
with distinct needs to access the proper look. It would be of use if we
could somehow find needs based on the various motor / sense patterns --
perhaps offering visual / audible / motor augmentations so that they can
be 'stacked' to meet the requirements of a given user.

Throwing ideas out there with the hopes that something gels.

Ultimately, however, there is no such creature as universal access.
It is a Utopian myth. We need to be realistic about our target
audiences for a given design pattern, and target them specifically. In
the end, the overarching lack of design direction in _all_ of the
buntu's relates to this fundamental underlying concept.

[Bug 37603] Re: Ensure that foreground and background color combinations provide sufficient contrast when viewed by someone having color deficits

2007-01-28 Thread Troy James Sobotka
I would suggest that instead of implementing a poor 'middle' ground for
these issues, it might be prudent to target the needs in an orthodox
manner.

That said, it would seem to make sense to target the fundamental theme
at a larger percentage group. Demographics are an unfortunate reality
in this circumstance. It would seem logical that someone with motor
impairment not be forced to use a medium 'middle' ground window control
in OSX, or colour impairment be forced to use the palette of the default
view.

Reality would obviously dictate that these such needs are quickly (in an
ideal world ;) ) overcome by specific design semantics for each
particular facility.

I personally believe that if we can make it a mandate to acknowledge
this, and begin designing Ubuntu centric design patterns for those
elements, we would probably further the cause.

The simple act of attempting to aim for universal access is, in my opinion,
watering down our attempts at strictly addressing the needs of the many
individuals who require a diligent and well planned design strategy to
facilitate their computing.

Do you know of any wiki pages established to tackle these sorts of
issues Henrik?

[Bug 72645] Re: _Very_ poor linear scaling used in GDM when SVG images are scaled

2007-01-17 Thread Troy James Sobotka
Yes.

I actually think this applies to several aspects of the GNOME rendering
engine -- if we can track down exactly where the SVG is being pre-
cached, we can probably figure out what is going on.

I will render a test image and provide screenshots.

Also, Sebastien, is there any way to have SVGs rendered during the
bootup process to prevent the very noticeable lag on complex SVG
backgrounds in a GDM? IE: If you have a complicated SVG image as a
background used in GDM, the lag will be massive during boot. I realize
that last comment is probably an upstream issue, but it would require
some forethought before pushing it.

[Bug 43350] Re: Too Low Resolution Backgrounds

2007-01-17 Thread Troy James Sobotka
This bug is largely surrounding resolution of background images -- so I
have merged a bug thread that deals with multi-head resolutions.

At the very least -- Feisty should provide at least ONE SVG background to
accommodate all of these issues. I realize this isn't optimal for the users of
such setups and extremely high resolution monitors, but it is at least a step
in the proper direction and would address _all_ of the issues we see in this
thread and the other merged bug report.

The SVG issue will probably be addressed by the artwork community at
large before the official default package as the artwork is handled by
sabdfl, and he wasn't too keen on SVG during Edgy. Perhaps his opinion
has shifted somewhat during the course of Ubuntu? sabdfl?

That said, the community that is subscribed to this bug would gladly
help you if we can get some solid aspect ratio issues out of the way.

If you folks out there with multi-head support enabled could offer up
some of your aspect ratios, it would be most helpful. HD is irrelevant
as it is roughly 16:9 -- close enough to our dual format targets -- 4:5
and 16:10 (4:5 accomodates 4:3 etc, and 16:10 accomodates 16:9)

For example, as a user who is not entirely familiar with Linux multi-
head:

 1) It appears your image is spread across all desktops. Is this an
option? Can you set a secondary image (IE take two smaller images) and
set each display independently?

 2) When you set the 'zoom' parameter on the wallpaper setting, does it
properly take into account both monitors? Use a test image to experiment
if you can (Attached a sample.)

Anyone who can take the time to accomplish this will would be greatly
appreciated. I know that the community of artists at large would love to
support your displays, so please take the time.

Once again, it will probably take more effort to affect the default
installation of Ubuntu -- but we need to start somewhere. Thank you all
for your time.

ATTENTION ARTISTS: Anyone out there with solid SVG skills who could
possibly take up an experiment to generate the current default wallpaper
in SVG format please step up. Inkscape is the preferred tool as it will
assure you a reasonable level of compatibility with the GNOME SVG
rendering libs. As a general rule -- if it thumbnails properly it will
render properly. Thank you.

[Bug 66262] Re: Human login screen specifies the wrong font face for the input field

2007-01-11 Thread Troy James Sobotka
This is related to many other bugs.

I can, again, push a fix that will set the input box to a scaled region,
but as of now, it appears that it is impossible to accomplish in the
bounding rect container.

Theoretically, it should scale to the target dimensions of the user's
monitor, so it seems logical.

If we can agree that the Username: (subject to bug 13748 label
Max_Size changes that should be applied) and the input box will
_always_ be displayed, we can pull the stanza _outside_ of the need for
box.

In layman's terms, this means that the box would not be dynamic in terms
of new items (locate them below possibly), but would permit us to lock
into a %scale of the window, and thus %scale the input box. Phew.

Hope this clears things up.

[Bug 73023] Re: Round orange emblems have lack usability

2007-01-11 Thread Troy James Sobotka
There are many people, some with art and design degrees, who have issues
with some of Ubuntu's chosen implementations across everything from
Wallpaper to Icons to menu layouts.

That said, the current art and design final word is handled by sabdfl
himself. He chose to integrate the emblems. It his not, I stress _not_
within our range of power to change such a major element at this
juncture.

Sorry if this is not what you want to hear, but we must all learn to
work together and appreciate sabdfl's decisions on these matters.

If you have further concerns, I strongly suggest that you change your
local implementations of the emblems.

Once again, the look and feel of the Ubuntu emblems is 'by design'.

I hope this clears the situation up.

[Bug 29425] Re: rectangular buttons in titlebar

Closing bug.

Window design was handled directly with consultation with sabdfl
himself. His thoughts might change in the future, but for the time
being, the chance of him approving of buttons that are wider is
currently around nil, as a loose approximation.

Hope this helps to clarify the situation.

[Bug 19549] Re: Usability : the default metacity theme must be accessible.

2007-01-10 Thread Troy James Sobotka

Specific sets of disabilities require very specific and real design
features. It is simply impossible to address specific sets of
disabilities with a single theme.

[Bug 37603] Re: Ensure that foreground and background color combinations provide sufficient contrast when viewed by someone having color deficits

2007-01-10 Thread Troy James Sobotka
Can we close this?

This bug also falls under the area of accessibility features. The
default look cannot possibly hope to address the specific needs of
particular disabilities or special abilities -- Ubuntu should provide a
look / feel for various classes of disabilities. I am not qualified to
evaluate those classes, so perhaps someone within Ubuntu with a
particular class of disability might be more authoritative on the
matter.

Ultimately, however, this is beyond the scope of the default theme.
Once we have an appropriate 'need intensive' version of a look, it will
be simple to address these issues.

[Bug 29425] Re: rectangular buttons in titlebar

2006-12-23 Thread Troy James Sobotka
Apparently aesthetics doesn't matter. Once again, the default theme
should attempt to be aesthetically pleasing and functional for a given
target audience (yet to be defined.)

Since free software is infinitely customizable, I suggest that the user
apply their own theme to meet their needs.

Ultimately there are _many_ problems with the wide buttons. A few possible
reasons for this are:
 1) It is particular to one individual. What if someone wants them smaller or
even wider still -- is the design pattern subject to the whim of whomever
decides to place a bug report?
 2) Aesthetically, the wide buttons create inconsistencies with the rest of the
look -- notice the aspect ratio in comparison with an average distribution of
buttons across the look.
 3) For an average user with average motor controls, the current button size is
more than adequate. Perhaps this would be more well suited for an
accessibility look?

Sincerely,
TJS

[Bug 19549] Re: Usability : the default metacity theme must be accessible.

2006-12-06 Thread Troy James Sobotka
The bug reporting issue regarding design is getting a tad silly.

We have no target audience for the design -- which is ultimately the
problem. The aesthetic, whatever it ends up being, _will_ not and _can_
not please everyone.

Also, permitting bug reports to be filed against any aspect is truly
the path of folly. Most of the bugs should be marked by design by
our lead designer. Of course, our lead designer is sabdfl and he is
probably too busy.

It is completely impossible to even _consider_ 98% of these bugs.

Accessibility should be very high on Ubuntu's list, but it is similar to
language. We need _SPECIFIC_ design patterns for _SPECIFIC_
accessibility issues, and provide a look / feel for each.

[Bug 72143] Re: please revert startup sounds

2006-11-17 Thread Troy James Sobotka
While one can discuss the merits of the sounds on aesthetic grounds, I
would like to address the latter portion of your comment.

Currently, the modern world moves at the speed of thought -- it changes,
it morphs, it is nebulous. It is possible that an operating system that
strives to be contemporary and modern should _perhaps_ attempt to permit
such metamorphosis.

I wholeheartedly agree with you that consistency is worthy of concern,
but I believe the current branding of Ubuntu serves that purpose --
without focusing on the minutiae. The consistency is constructed from
the cohesive sum of the whole, not the discreet partial elements. Where
the technology within Ubuntu can change quite dramatically, we should
permit for the possibility of the same on aesthetic functionality.

Ultimately, change is healthy. We will certainly make mistakes in the
process, but that is the nature of innovation. Our operating system
should strive to push new limits, set new standards, and, most
importantly, change at the rate that society is changing. That is part
of the beauty of it.

[Bug 72143] Re: please revert startup sounds

2006-11-17 Thread Troy James Sobotka
but the old sounds were much more relaxing, professional
the previous sounds were really professional

It seems over the Edgy cycle this term 'professional' was bandied around
as some catch phrase. This is especially interesting when considering
the compositions of the various teams and the education / professional
background of the participants.

Once again, it seems the issue here is change. I am quite certain that
if one were to conduct a poll, the sounds would attain an acceptable
level of approval. I am quite certain that there are disagreements over
coding style, documentation grammar, etc., that are all as relevant --
but perhaps not quite as high profile. We _are_ a team however, across
all of the various elements, and we need to support each other.

Ultimately, reversion is probably not the wisest choice -- as
progression would seem more appropriate. Further still, until we
_concretely_ define Ubuntu creative design policy and treat it with the
same attention as we do with the technological aspects, we are doomed to
repeat the same mistakes.

Perhaps we should be discussing the mechanics of design that 'work' for
Ubuntu versus, such as useful terms as 'relaxing' etc. This is all far
more critical towards building a comprehensive design philosophy as
opposed to dissecting the smallest of details regarding our current
evolutionary state.

Let's work towards the future, not mimicry of the past. Those were the
days isn't a good enough excuse as, for us, _these_ are the days.
