[Bug 1693607] [NEW] No HOME environment var, USER, SHELL, others not set

2017-05-25 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

Shortly after I logged in, I started a gnome-terminal with Ctrl-Alt-T. I was
surprised to see the message:

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo ".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

I was further surprised to see that /usr/bin/script started /bin/sh, not
/bin/bash.

So far, I've noticed (after moving my .profile and .bashrc aside) that
the environment provided is only:

DISPLAY=:0
PWD=/home/w3
SHLVL=1
TERM=xterm-256color
VTE_VERSION=4205
WINDOWID=67108874

No HOME, SHELL, USER, ...

A gnome-terminal started later gets no sudo complaints, and these environment
variables:

Why isn't gnome-terminal startup deterministic?

I still have the malfunctioning gnome-terminal open if further diagnosis
is possible or needed.

[Bug 1431487] [NEW] `sudo startx` works, `startx` give low-res, no Dash

2015-03-12 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

Somehow `/var/run/gdm` had the permissions changed to `711`. This causes
the greeter to fail, and shows a low-res screen with no Dash. `sudo
chmod 755 /run/gdm /run/gdm/greeter` fixed the problem for me, see

[Bug 951939] [NEW] evolution crashed when I repeatedly enabled/disabled an account

2012-03-10 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly  valgrind -v --tool=memcheck
--leak-check=full --num-callers=40 --log-file=$DIR/$LOG
/usr/bin/evolution

I opened "Evolution Preferences", and idly clicked rapidly, multiple
times, in the "Enable" box for one of my accounts (a local mail spool)
to enable,disable,enable,disable,... and Evolution vanished!

I was able to recreate the crash under the valgrind command above. The
log is attached. The output from the execution is:

[Bug 794768] [NEW] Greeter displays password expiry message, then vanishes

2011-06-08 Thread WaltSullivan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I have password aging enabled, and it's getting close to password change
time. When I login, the greeter displays the " Warning: your password
will expire in 6 days" message, then vanishes before I can read the
message. It should persist for a few seconds so I can read the message
(if any message has been posted).
