[Bug 518087] Re: palimpsest cannot delete partition/MSDOS_MAGIC found
I'm using a Maverick x64 LiveCD trying to change some partitions on a failed Clonezilla restore of a disk with Windows Vista on the primary partition and three partitions on an extended partition. Don't know if this is the same bug or not but when I try to delete the swap partition in the extended partition I get the following error (googled for MSDOS_MAGIC and found this bug). I was able to delete the ext4 partition sda7 just before it without a problem and the ntfs partition following it also (all three in the extended partition). I need to get my system built back up soon and will likely start from scratch again with a Windows then Ubuntu install to get dual boot. And since I don't seem to be able to restore this configuration doubt that I will be able to help with a further repro. [Bug 500570] Re: Appearance "Visual Effects" settings lost across reboots and log out / log on
Just in case anyone else hits this problem, I found the cause. My ~/.local/share/applications/ directory had a compiz.desktop file in it. I booted the release Karmic Live-CD and it was able to return from suspend, however it took quite some time and I had a kernel oops to report with apport when the UI came back. Looks to be a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/417842 for which a recent fix has been released. This is my wife's (Windows) computer and she never allows me to install anything. But my grandson has the same model with an Ubuntu partition so I will make sure it is up-to-date and give this another try later this evening to see if the release fixed the problem. -- Suspend hangs on Gateway W350A https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/343275 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Marking this invalid because I have two other systems at same update level with no problems (one is different partition on same machine). Looks like saved state is a red herring but something is definitely messing up my compiz settings and window layout when I log out / log in or reboot. I've never tried the "convert to a question" link. Maybe that will post to the forums where I can get an answer on what causes this / fix that could also help someone else. [Bug 500570] Re: Appearance "Visual Effects" settings lost across reboots
This is most definitely NOT a regression of 430981. /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager is set correctly both before and after the reboot. After a reboot I can fix the problem (which manifests as missing key bindings and also windows are missing the title bar and the menu overlaps the panel at the top of the screen - weird). I can temporarily "fix" the problem by setting "Visual Effects" to "Normal" (they show as "None" after a reboot), but then after the next reboot I have the same problem. If I set "Visual Effects" back to "None" after fixing the problem windows display normally (without the compiz enhancements), but the problem always returns after a reboot. I have found that ~/.gconfd/saved_state gets rewritten with some line diffs (I've attached a *.bad1 and *.good1 to show the file before and after fixing the problem in Appearance Preferences), but across reboots instead of a few line differences the entire file seems to be changed, so maybe this is not part of the problem. If anyone has some ideas for what to look for I would appreciate it. Yes, after a reboot the mouse works just fine. I did a couple of reboots - suspend - resume on both my 900 and 901 and dead mouse on resume but working mouse on reboot seems 100% repro. Sorry if I hit a nerve with my "deployment-blocker" comment. I realize Jaunty is Alpha, but I would be more than happy to take my chances and run the Alpha for my day-to-day usage in the hopes of helping to discover additional bugs while there is still some time to triage / fix them before release. I run Windows at work but Ubuntu for most of my personal computing. I have jumped on board early for the last few Ubuntu releases and in the past run alpha and beta versions of a major competitors software. Maybe I've just gotten too soft / picky with 8.10 working so well for me :-). Unfortunately I use suspend much too frequently to upgrade until this gets fixed (or at least confirmed and scheduled for a fix) so will have to wait for a later build before upgrading. And yes, while expected now if it doesn't get fixed before release it *would* prevent me from upgrading from 8.10. [Bug 326789] [NEW] Jaunty Alpha 4 mouse freeze on resume after suspend
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager Asus Eee 901 and Jaunty Alpha 4 Live session boot from USB thumb drive. After resume from suspend mouse is frozen (keyboard still works, can alt-tab between applications, etc.). This is a deployment blocker for me. Same happens on my Asus Eee 900. [Bug 318280] [NEW] Jaunty A3: gnome-brightness-applet hangs gnome on Sony VGN-CR120E
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)" Kernel version: 2.6.28-4-generic g-p-m version:2.24.0 HAL version: 0.5.12rc1 Related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power- manager/+bug/243904 but now the problem is a hang rather than not working. Other bug was for Intrepid and this is for Jaunty Alpha 3 Live CD. I'm not sure I got the right package but ubuntu-bug -p gnome- brightness-applet said there wasn't a package by that name. I had tried brightness gnome-brightness-applet on Jaunty Alpha 2 (it worked fine) and was ready to install Alpha 3 but since this has been broken since Intrepid I tried the Live CD first. Unfortunately the fix in Alpha 2 is gone, and rather than gnome-brightness-applet doing nothing, it now hangs gnome (cursor moves but no mouse left clicks work). Repro: 1) Boot Jaunty Alpha 3 Live CD on Sony VGN-CR120E 2) Right-click panel and "Add to panel..." 3) Add brightness applet 4) Click the brightness applet and try to move the slider to adjust screen brightness At this point gnome is mostly hung. Mouse moves and I can ctl-alt-f1 to get a terminal, but right and left clicking on the UI doesn't work, and I can't alt-tab to switch applications. I've attached the output of gnome-power-bugreport.sh. Please let me know if anything else would be helpful. [Bug 267019] [NEW] Intrepid frequently locks up (no crash reports)
Public bug reported: For the last several weeks (since about Alpha 4) I've been getting frequent lock-ups of the gnome desktop with the following symptoms (2.6.27-2-generic #1 SMP x86_64 on a Sony Vaio VGN-CR120E) : * No response from keyboard, including ctrl-alt-f1, ctrl-alt-backspace, etc. * Mouse is locked up. * Caps lock and scroll lock LEDs flash at approximately one second interval. * Only way to restart is to hold down power button until system shuts off, then power back on. Prior to this (since Alpha 1) gnome has never locked up like this on my hardware. I usually have Firefox running and often have run update manager to get the latest updates. Tonight when it locked up I was also connected to another system via Remote Desktop Viewer. There are no crash files in /var/crash aside from the usual _usr_bin_gnome-power-manager* (which seems to be well reported). Also Firefox got really unstable at about the same time (and I've seen lots of reports of this so won't post another). I don't have any clue what the correct package should be or what would be useful information, but I attached today's /var/log/syslog in case it can point to a cause. If someone can give me some instructions on gathering more helpful info now (or next time it locks up) I would be glad to do so. [Bug 201762] Re: [hardy] Battery brightness slider gone
Chris, thanks for educating me on this! The brightness applet works great and completely addresses my concerns about adjusting the brightness. Do you know if this will get turned on by default on a 7.10 upgrade? For laptops I think it should be put up on the panel by default right along with the volume control so it is more discoverable. Seems easier to remove if you don't want it (e.g. buttons work) than find it if you don't know where to look. Alternately maybe it will get covered in help (for those who RTFM :-) Thanks for your help, and if you feel it is warranted I'd be happy to file a bug to get it turned on by default or added to help. -- [hardy] Battery brightness slider gone https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201762 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I probably just don't know where to look, but I can't find anything on my task bar, system menu, or in Synaptic searching for "brightness" or "applet" and browsing through the offerings. Note that I have upgraded from 7.10 rather than a clean install so maybe this is the problem. A hint where to look for a brightness panel applet may very well address my (and other's) concerns. I'm OK with setting one brightness and having it "stick" across both AC and battery, and a brightness panel applet would actually be better than going to the power management applet (I actually had a short cut for this I used it so often). BTW, my brightness keys have never worked on my Vaio VGN-CR120E, but I did submit requested info at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=465491 so hopefully the keys will someday work. In the mean time a brightness panel applet would be my only relief from using Terminal to control my screen brightness. I hope I'm not in a Catch-22 where the keys have to work for the brightness panel to appear... -- [hardy] Battery brightness slider gone https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201762 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 201762] Re: [hardy] Battery brightness slider gone
I would like to respectfully disagree with this being "invalid / file a wishlist" for the following reasons: * The feature was available in 7.10 along with the confusing and unpredictable way it worked, but it was usable and better than nothing. As an end-user upgrading I would be very disappointed if I lost this functionality in an upgrade. As far as is possible I don't think upgrades should burn people or this will foster the kind of inertia widspread in the Windows world. * I find the ability to adjust laptop brightness essential (see Alex's use case above, and add battery life). * 6.1 Screen Dim Brightness in help has been revised to remove the (I expect planned but couldn't make it into Hardy) task bar slider, but the existing text is entirely inadequate. There should at least be pointers to how to find the laptop specific (in my case sudo /etc/acpi/sonybright.sh) scripts so that advanced users can control brightness from terminal. To summarize this should be left as an open bug against Hardy and fixed ASAP. If a "correct" fix is too hard to provide in the next couple of months the old behavior should be reverted as an interim fix. -- [hardy] Battery brightness slider gone https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201762 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 205329] [NEW] Heron: gnome-power-preferences lost display brightness
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager At some point over the last few days of updates the display brightness slider disappeared from the gnome-power-preferences dialog and I can no longer control the display brightness of my Sony VAIO VGN-CR120E. Display brightness is still available if I boot the Heron Alpha 6 Live CD. lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu hardy (development branch) Release:8.04 apt-cache policy gnome-power-manager gnome-power-manager: Installed: 2.22.0-0ubuntu2 Candidate: 2.22.0-0ubuntu2 Version table: *** 2.22.0-0ubuntu2 0 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status >From preferences help it appears there may be a new Brightness Applet, however it is not showing up on my task bar and I don't see this listed as an issue for Beta. I have attached the output from gnome-power- bugreport.sh and will attach gpm.conf.values shortly. Also xorg.conf doesn't seem to know what kind of video device I have, is that the problem? [Bug 188537] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV
Pedro, thanks for your pointers. I'm a nubie but was able to figure out that I needed to install nautilus-dbgsym to get a backtrace. If I run "gdb nautilus" and set a breakpoint at main I can get a backtrace with symbols, however if I unzip CoreDump.gz and run "gdb nautilus ~/Desktop/CoreDump" I get the following error: "Cannot access memory at address 0xb7fac658". Backtrace produces a similar error: #0 0xb75ee837 in ?? () Cannot access memory at address 0xbfdfbb64 Unfortunately when I installed nautilus-dbgsym I think it also upgraded nautilus, so the symbols probably no longer match CoreDump at the time of the crash, and I haven't seen this crash repeat. Are we SOL or is there some way to recover a backtrace at this point? If you could give me a pointer to forcing load of old symbols or some other technique I will be happy to try again after work tomorrow (machine is at home). -- nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/188537 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
