[Bug 1766137] Re: [regression] Password accepted but login fails (blank purple screen and mouse pointer only)

2018-05-01 Thread Wayne Carr
I see the same thing as #17 (Andrew). I type in the password correctly
each time. I login to a user (successfully, no errors) and then log
out. After that, I login as a different user and I get the purple
screen without the desktop showing. I typed the correct password. If I
switch users leaving the first user still running (instead of logging
that user out) the error does not happen. This happens on 3 different
PCs that I've updated to 18.04.

[Bug 1245214] Re: Cannot manually arrange (drag and drop) url desktop launchers after upgrade from ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10

2013-10-27 Thread Wayne Perry
I'm the only user so cannot comment on the "Guest Session" question as
none are set up. Some "shortcuts" do not exhibit this problem. The
"Home" icon, for example, can be moved around freely. From the error
message I described it appears the operation is trying to copy root (/).
I have another "machine" that has not been upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10
that doesn't have this problem. It, however, has nautilus version 3.6.3
instead of version 3.8.2 that was installed with the 13.10 upgrade on
this computer.

[Bug 993792] Re: R.Box doesn't show the album art

2012-06-06 Thread Michael Wayne Goodman
Same here. In fact, this bug report is how I found out how to show the
album art. It seems the art pane is just hidden below the bottom of the
window. I was able to partially view the album art of the currently
playing song by switching to small display, then back to full, then
resizing the window (since turning off small-display didn't restore the
original size... another bug, perhaps?).

[Bug 517021] Re: gvfsd-metadata causes 100% CPU usage

2011-12-22 Thread Wayne Scott
Just adding my vote here. I have seen this ever since upgrading to 11.10 on
multiple machines.
It is really annoying.

This happens on a 64-bit desktop and a 32-bit laptop. (I can't remember, but
I think the laptop had 11.10 installed
directly and wasn't an upgrade.)

I have been using Ubuntu for years and haven't see this on earlier
releases.

[Bug 762918] Re: Natty Screensaver freezes system after some period of inactivity

2011-09-04 Thread Wayne Rodrigues
Recently, this problem occurs on and off (randomly). Can't really say what
causes it.
"Ctrl+Alt+Bkspace" fixes it.

I'm running "GLMatrix" as my screensaver.

[Bug 730382] [NEW] Change "no effect" text to "no effects" or "effects disabled"

2011-03-06 Thread Wayne Davison
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

In the gdm selector for choosing the session type, there is the text
"Ubuntu Classic Session (no effect)" which would be better written as
"Ubuntu Classic Session (no effects)" or "Ubuntu Classic Session
(effects disabled)". The phrase "no effect" denotes that something
doesn't do anything (since it has no effect), which can confuse the user
as to what purpose that option serves. The plural is more clearly
indicative that the login option will disable desktop effects. I
personally think that "effects disabled" is a pretty clear wording.

[Bug 713893] [NEW] Empathy can't set avatars in MSN

[Bug 57731] Re: Futex hang when exiting using the window close button

2010-11-09 Thread Wayne Salmiaker
By interpreting the 1st argument as an address and reading the value on this
address, I get a 0 for the first three lines of my output (which are the futex
calls).
Very nice how you use awk and the created header file in the middle of your
code. I tried it. It works ;-)

A few answers ago, you said restoring the signal handler is not
neccessary. Is this a general fact or does it only apply to some kernel
versions/architectures?

This looks a little cryptic now, but you just need to have a look into
/usr/include/asm-i486/unistd.h where all the numbers for the different
system calls are defined. It seems each system call is represented by 2
output lines. 240 stands for futex. 2nd arguent "0" means FUTEX_WAIT.
"1" means FUTEX_WAKE. 119 stands for "sigreturn". This is where the
signal handler is left and the process continues with the normal
procedure. 221 is fcnt64 which is also part of the debug() call. 102 is
socketcall which seems to be a synonym for "connect".

[Bug 57731] Re: Futex hang when exiting using the window close button

2010-11-08 Thread Wayne Salmiaker
You are right. I dont need to restore the signal handler - one system call less
in my signal handler.
I now saved a snapshot of the unfinished futex call. So I can experiment as
often as I want.
Poking a 1 does not work. But Poking a 0 works perfektly fine.
And youre also right : I cannot use strace when the process is alredy attached
to my ptrace stuff.
So I will implement some PTRACE_SYSCALL steps myself to see the process
continuing after poking a 0.

Do you think, that errno could be the problem as well? Maybe a system call is
assinging a value to errno. Then the signal arrives and the handler tries to
access errno, too, which is blocked now?
If really the debug() call is the reason, I wonder why this problem does not
happen more often. I am debugging a lot in my code. And besides the debug calls
like every 2nd or 3rd code line ends up as a system call. If interrupting a
system call and executing another system call in the handler should cause the
problem, I feel like this kind of deadlock should happen more often...

[Bug 57731] Re: Futex hang when exiting using the window close button

2010-11-05 Thread Wayne Salmiaker
By the way: The last system call before SIGCHLD arrives is "connect".
This call is also part of the debug procedure. But strace does not mark
this call as "unfinished". Normally "connect" is followed by a "send".

[Bug 57731] Re: Futex hang when exiting using the window close button

2010-11-05 Thread Wayne Salmiaker
Basically my program looks like this:

static volatile sig_atomic_t child_terminated=0;

void sigchld_handler(int sig) {
int copy_errno=errno;
debug("Received SIGCHLD");
child_terminated=1;
signal(SIGCHLD,sigchld_handler);
errno=copy_errno;
}

int main() {
signal(SIGCHLD,sigchld_handler);
for(;;) {
/* do some heavy weight stuff */
/* check for child_terminated and perform waitpid */
}

Maybe the debug-call is the reason. It is sending the String to the local
syslog-daemon, using sockets and therefore a bunch of system calls. When I
consider strace, I see the arrival of SIGCHLD and the futex call directly
behind it.
When the futex call is performed, the 3rd argument is a "2". I verified it
using PTRACE_PEEKDATA on the 1st argument (which is the address of the futex
value). It really is a "2". Do you know what this "2" exactly means? Does it
mean one process blocked a ressource and another one is now suspended? What
happens if I write a "1" to the futex address?

Thanks a lot for answers ;-)

[Bug 57731] Re: Futex hang when exiting using the window close button

2010-11-05 Thread Wayne Salmiaker
Hi Rogers,
Thanks for your interesting C-code!
Occasionally I am experiencing the same problem.
The program freezes due to a FUTEX_WAIT call (detected by the use of strace),
directly after the arrival of SIGCHLD.
After reading some documents on futexes I believe to know, that the reason for
the deadlock is a missing FUTEX_WAKE call by the kernel to wake up the
suspended processes/threads again.
In your program your are writing a zero to the futex value.
Why is this working? Did you refer to a specific document?

Cheers,
Wayne

[Bug 650750] [NEW] Empathy contact list defocuses on most keypresses

2010-09-28 Thread Michael Wayne Goodman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

I'm running Maverick beta (last updated Sept 27th 2010) with Empathy
2.32.0.

In what appears to be a regression from Lucid, I cannot control the
Empathy contact list by the keyboard. I would like to do the following:

1. Press tab to change focus from the buddy list to status settings

2. Select a status from the dropdown list (to be fair, this might not
have been available in Lucid)

3. Press enter while a contact is selected to open a chat window with
that contact

Currently, while the status text box is focused, I can type a new status
and enter it, but I cannot open the dropdown menu. Pressing tab in the
status text box changes focus to the buddy list (rather than to the
dropdown menu button).

The more serious problem is that, apparently, while the buddy list is
focused (e.g. a contact is highlighted) any key besides up and down will
defocus the application. I cannot press tab to go back to the status
text box, and I cannot press enter to open a chat window with that
contact. Even pressing letter or number keys will defocus the
application.

This is very annoying for me as I primarily use the keyboard. I would be
happy to provide further information and some time debugging.

UPDATE:

During a reboot, I dropped into the terminal from GRUB and did an

I got the following warning after about 30 seconds on the desktop:

An attempt to "Report Problem" resulted in a "Collecting Information"

[Bug 531556] Re: [Lucid] Blank Screen after login

2010-03-28 Thread Wayne Crannell
OKvery interesting

After two installs (one update from Karmic and then one format and
install straight off the CD), I tried booting into the LiveCD which
worked. From there, I formatted my Linux partition in gparted and then
installed from the CD desktop. Voila. Full boot into Lucid without a
problem. I chose all defaults for the install, BTW.

But THENI started using the desktop, and about 5 minutes in, the
screen went black. I had an error message about a Gnome package but
wasn't quick enough to note what it was.

Subsequent boot attempts get me to the desktop for about 2 seconds and
then back to a black screen.

Hmmm

I can also confirm this with a MacBook 2,1. The difference is that when
I boot the Live CD, I can actually get to the desktop. I've tried both
an update from Karmic and a full install from the CD (without booting to
the live CD). I'm now trying a full wipe and install from the liveCD.

Interesting that I can boot to the LiveCD without incident...would not
the files on the CD be the same as those installed?

[Bug 376996] Re: Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution

2010-02-23 Thread Michael Wayne Goodman
This happened to me as well, but also there were cells marked incorrect
(red font) when they were actually correct (no other cell in
row/column/square had the same number. I double-checked). After getting
stuck on a first pass, I tried to have the program "Fill all squares",
but it did not do anything. I cleared the numbers and notes I had on the
board and started over. As I was filling out the board, some numbers
would highlight red, but not be paired with anything. After finishing
the board, it did not acknowledge the win.

[Bug 430583] [NEW] New GDM login screen counter-intuitive

2009-09-16 Thread Wayne McDougall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Looking at Karmic Alpha 5:

On logging on for the first time, the user only sees two buttons.
Restart or Shutdown. Many users will only look at the buttons.

Worse the login user name is already highlighted by default (only one
user after first install) - it is not at all obvious that you should
click on an already highlighted user name to bring up a password prompt.

I believe this needs some work to make it more friendly, usable and
intuitive. I'd suggest a Login button, even if all it does is act the
same as clicking on the highlighted user name. Not have the user name
highlighted, unless you also display the password box.

At the moment I know most of my family would try clicking on a button or
Other... in the hope that something would work. And I've spoken to some
other experienced Ubuntu users who admit that on first seeing this
screen they have to stop, and consider what should be done.

[Bug 111893] Re: Panel items lose their order when panel is not "expanded"

2009-09-10 Thread Wayne Werner
I can confirm this bug on Ubuntu 9.04 with gnome panel 2.26.

What is most definitely broken behavior is that locked items will shift
to make room for non-locked icons!

It really gets to be a pain - I want my clock, date, and login name to
be on the right-most side of the panel. But gnome-panel doesn't seem to
think that makes sense.

[Bug 410876] [NEW] "key to choose 3rd level" function does not work with all applications

2009-08-08 Thread Wayne Cat
Public bug reported:

The "key to choose 3rd level" function does not work with all applications on
my
Macbook Pro. I can create a "@" if I press the "Left Win + L" in
gnome-terminal
but it does not work in firefox/evolution/gedit.

xev tells me:

state 0x0, keycode 133 (keysym 0xfe03, ISO_Level3_Shift), same_screen YES,
XKeysymToKeycode returns keycode: 92
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyPress event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x3a1,
root 0x77, subw 0x0, time 6159254, (-178,240), root:(455,614),
state 0xc0, keycode 46 (keysym 0x40, at), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (40) "@"
XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (40) "@"
XFilterEvent returns: False

That looks good ... everything ok ... but only for gnome-terminal.
Other Gnome applications do not recognize this combination.

Public bug reported:

Marc Lee ... thank you for the "background information"

I'm using the Screenlets "Output applet" (Widget-like mini-applications
for GNOME) ... it also has problems with the new version. Not critical
... it works ... just lost the "3d look" ... but maybe other tools also
have problems with the update ... just for your information.

Attached ... my .xsession-errors ... maybe the Screenlet developers will
have to change their code too.

BTW ... major changes means ... major improvements ... awn is not critical
application ... And I did not see major gtk
problems in the Ubuntu Karmic testing forum.

[Bug 288494] Re: the youtube code needs to be updated

2009-03-21 Thread Wayne H
I already had the totem package above already installed (came thru
automatic update) but it still didn't fix it. The way I had been doing
it was to copy the downloaded youtube video from the /tmp folder to
desktop and add extension .flv. This used to work about 6 months ago but
no longer.

My fix:
Download package youtube-dl with synaptic package manager.
To use, open terminal and enter:
youtube-dl
The resulting .flv file will be saved to your home folder (unless you changed
directory in terminal).
I can play this flv in totem no problems.

Hope that helps.

[Bug 275731] [NEW] trash will not empty

2008-09-29 Thread wayne pronge
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

This is on a new system with old hardware. amd X2 64 4200+>Nvidia
6150Se> 1Gig of ram. After a clean install and applying all updates when
i delete a file to the trash, sometimes it shows up in the trash, and
sometimes it does not. Trash icon is saying no trash and there is trash
inside, also icon shows trash inside after i have deleted trash. Then
when i go into trying to remove the trash i have to click two times on
empty trash before it emptys. Also after doing this a couple times the
empty trash tab becomes grey, then i can not empty trash. This happens
on 32-bit ubuntu 8.04Lts and 64bit. Not sure if its a hardware issue.
After rebooting it lets me empty trash a couple times then just
replicates the same behaviour as before. Driving me Nuts. Thanks I miss
my Ubuntu.
