[Bug 1766137] Re: [regression] Password accepted but login fails (blank purple screen and mouse pointer only)
I see the same thing as #17 (Andrew). I type in the password correctly each time. I login to a user (successfully, no errors) and then log out. After that, I login as a different user and I get the purple screen without the desktop showing. I typed the correct password. If I switch users leaving the first user still running (instead of logging that user out) the error does not happen. By interpreting the 1st argument as an address and reading the value on this address, I get a 0 for the first three lines of my output (which are the futex calls). Thanks for your quick answers! After poking a zero, I performed a little loop to get the system call number (orig_eax) and the next two arguments (ebx, ecx) of the next 20 system calls. This is how it looks: syscall=240 (1st_arg=-1210085564 2nd_arg=0) syscall=240 (1st_arg=-1210085564 2nd_arg=1) syscall=240 (1st_arg=-1210085564 2nd_arg=1) syscall=13 (1st_arg=-1075451152 2nd_arg=135199597) syscall=13 (1st_arg=-1075451152 2nd_arg=135199597) syscall=102 (1st_arg=1 2nd_arg=-1075451340) syscall=102 (1st_arg=1 2nd_arg=-1075451340) syscall=221 (1st_arg=11 2nd_arg=2) syscall=221 (1st_arg=11 2nd_arg=2) syscall=102 (1st_arg=3 2nd_arg=-1075451340) syscall=102 (1st_arg=3 2nd_arg=-1075451340) syscall=102 (1st_arg=9 2nd_arg=-1075451304) syscall=102 (1st_arg=9 2nd_arg=-1075451304) syscall=6 (1st_arg=11 2nd_arg=1) syscall=6 (1st_arg=11 2nd_arg=1) syscall=174 (1st_arg=17 2nd_arg=0) syscall=174 (1st_arg=17 2nd_arg=0) syscall=4 (1st_arg=6 2nd_arg=134908385) syscall=4 (1st_arg=6 2nd_arg=134908385) syscall=13 (1st_arg=-1075451152 2nd_arg=135199597) syscall=13 (1st_arg=-1075451152 2nd_arg=135199597) syscall=102 (1st_arg=1 2nd_arg=-1075451340) syscall=102 (1st_arg=1 2nd_arg=-1075451340) syscall=221 (1st_arg=11 2nd_arg=2) syscall=221 (1st_arg=11 2nd_arg=2) syscall=102 (1st_arg=3 2nd_arg=-1075451340) syscall=102 (1st_arg=3 2nd_arg=-1075451340) syscall=102 (1st_arg=9 2nd_arg=-1075451304) syscall=102 (1st_arg=9 2nd_arg=-1075451304) syscall=6 (1st_arg=11 2nd_arg=1) syscall=6 (1st_arg=11 2nd_arg=1) syscall=119 (1st_arg=1 2nd_arg=-1210093580) syscall=-1 (1st_arg=1 2nd_arg=-1075448172) syscall=221 (1st_arg=9 2nd_arg=2) syscall=221 (1st_arg=9 2nd_arg=2) syscall=102 (1st_arg=3 2nd_arg=-1075448172) syscall=102 (1st_arg=3 2nd_arg=-1075448172) This looks a little cryptic now, but you just need to have a look into /usr/include/asm-i486/unistd.h where all the numbers for the different system calls are defined. It seems each system call is represented by 2 output lines. 240 stands for futex. 2nd arguent "0" means FUTEX_WAIT. "1" means FUTEX_WAKE. 119 stands for "sigreturn". This is where the signal handler is left and the process continues with the normal procedure. 221 is fcnt64 which is also part of the debug() call. 102 is socketcall which seems to be a synonym for "connect". -- Futex hang when exiting using the window close button https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/57731 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 57731] Re: Futex hang when exiting using the window close button
You are right. I dont need to restore the signal handler - one system call less in my signal handler. I now saved a snapshot of the unfinished futex call. So I can experiment as often as I want. Poking a 1 does not work. But Poking a 0 works perfektly fine. And youre also right : I cannot use strace when the process is alredy attached to my ptrace stuff. So I will implement some PTRACE_SYSCALL steps myself to see the process continuing after poking a 0. Do you think, that errno could be the problem as well? Maybe a system call is assinging a value to errno. Then the signal arrives and the handler tries to access errno, too, which is blocked now? If really the debug() call is the reason, I wonder why this problem does not happen more often. I am debugging a lot in my code. And besides the debug calls like every 2nd or 3rd code line ends up as a system call. If interrupting a system call and executing another system call in the handler should cause the problem, I feel like this kind of deadlock should happen more often... -- Futex hang when exiting using the window close button https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/57731 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 57731] Re: Futex hang when exiting using the window close button
By the way: The last system call before SIGCHLD arrives is "connect". This call is also part of the debug procedure. But strace does not mark this call as "unfinished". Normally "connect" is followed by a "send".
Basically my program looks like this: static volatile sig_atomic_t child_terminated=0; void sigchld_handler(int sig) { int copy_errno=errno; debug("Received SIGCHLD"); child_terminated=1; signal(SIGCHLD,sigchld_handler); errno=copy_errno; } int main() { signal(SIGCHLD,sigchld_handler); for(;;) { /* do some heavy weight stuff */ /* check for child_terminated and perform waitpid */ } Maybe the debug-call is the reason. It is sending the String to the local syslog-daemon, using sockets and therefore a bunch of system calls. When I consider strace, I see the arrival of SIGCHLD and the futex call directly behind it. When the futex call is performed, the 3rd argument is a "2". I verified it using PTRACE_PEEKDATA on the 1st argument (which is the address of the futex value). It really is a "2". Do you know what this "2" exactly means? Does it mean one process blocked a ressource and another one is now suspended? What happens if I write a "1" to the futex address? Thanks a lot for answers ;-) -- Futex hang when exiting using the window close button https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/57731 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 57731] Re: Futex hang when exiting using the window close button
Hi Rogers, Thanks for your interesting C-code! Occasionally I am experiencing the same problem. The program freezes due to a FUTEX_WAIT call (detected by the use of strace), directly after the arrival of SIGCHLD. After reading some documents on futexes I believe to know, that the reason for the deadlock is a missing FUTEX_WAKE call by the kernel to wake up the suspended processes/threads again. In your program your are writing a zero to the futex value. Why is this working? Did you refer to a specific document? [Bug 650750] [NEW] Empathy contact list defocuses on most keypresses
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: empathy I'm running Maverick beta (last updated Sept 27th 2010) with Empathy 2.32.0. In what appears to be a regression from Lucid, I cannot control the Empathy contact list by the keyboard. I would like to do the following: 1. Press tab to change focus from the buddy list to status settings 2. Select a status from the dropdown list (to be fair, this might not have been available in Lucid) 3. Press enter while a contact is selected to open a chat window with that contact Currently, while the status text box is focused, I can type a new status and enter it, but I cannot open the dropdown menu. Pressing tab in the status text box changes focus to the buddy list (rather than to the dropdown menu button). The more serious problem is that, apparently, while the buddy list is focused (e.g. a contact is highlighted) any key besides up and down will defocus the application. I cannot press tab to go back to the status text box, and I cannot press enter to open a chat window with that contact. Even pressing letter or number keys will defocus the application. This is very annoying for me as I primarily use the keyboard. I would be happy to provide further information and some time debugging. ** Affects: empathy (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Empathy contact list defocuses on most keypresses https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/650750 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to empathy in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

OKvery interesting After two installs (one update from Karmic and then one format and install straight off the CD), I tried booting into the LiveCD which worked. From there, I formatted my Linux partition in gparted and then installed from the CD desktop. Voila. Full boot into Lucid without a problem. I chose all defaults for the install, BTW. But THENI started using the desktop, and about 5 minutes in, the screen went black. I had an error message about a Gnome package but wasn't quick enough to note what it was. Subsequent boot attempts get me to the desktop for about 2 seconds and then back to a black screen. [Bug 531556] Re: [Lucid] Blank Screen after login
I can also confirm this with a MacBook 2,1. The difference is that when I boot the Live CD, I can actually get to the desktop. I've tried both an update from Karmic and a full install from the CD (without booting to the live CD). I'm now trying a full wipe and install from the liveCD. Interesting that I can boot to the LiveCD without incident...would not the files on the CD be the same as those installed? -- [Lucid] Blank Screen after login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/531556 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 376996] Re: Sudoku not acknowledging winning solution
This happened to me as well, but also there were cells marked incorrect (red font) when they were actually correct (no other cell in row/column/square had the same number. I double-checked). After getting stuck on a first pass, I tried to have the program "Fill all squares", but it did not do anything. I cleared the numbers and notes I had on the board and started over. [Bug 430583] [NEW] New GDM login screen counter-intuitive
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm Looking at Karmic Alpha 5: On logging on for the first time, the user only sees two buttons. Restart or Shutdown. Many users will only look at the buttons. Worse the login user name is already highlighted by default (only one user after first install) - it is not at all obvious that you should click on an already highlighted user name to bring up a password prompt. I believe this needs some work to make it more friendly, usable and intuitive. I'd suggest a Login button, even if all it does is act the same as clicking on the highlighted user name. Not have the user name highlighted, unless you also display the password box. At the moment I know most of my family would try clicking on a button or Other... in the hope that something would work. And I've spoken to some other experienced Ubuntu users who admit that on first seeing this screen they have to stop, and consider what should be done. ** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- New GDM login screen counter-intuitive https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/430583 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I can confirm this bug on Ubuntu 9.04 with gnome panel 2.26. What is most definitely broken behavior is that locked items will shift to make room for non-locked icons! [Bug 288494] Re: the youtube code needs to be updated
I already had the totem package above already installed (came thru automatic update) but it still didn't fix it. The way I had been doing it was to copy the downloaded youtube video from the /tmp folder to desktop and add extension .flv. This used to work about 6 months ago but no longer. My fix: Download package youtube-dl with synaptic package manager. To use, open terminal and enter: youtube-dl The resulting .flv file will be saved to your home folder (unless you changed directory in terminal). I can play this flv in totem no problems. Hope that helps. -- the youtube code needs to be updated https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/288494 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 275731] Re: trash will not empty
Sorry still pretty new to linux so after one more clean install attempt the trash problem continued to do the same thing as mentioned. I tried rebooting and restarting, then i just logged off and logged back in and the problem was no more. Have been playing with the 64-bit ubuntu 8.04Lts all day with no problems just logging off and back in did the trick. -- trash will not empty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275731 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 275731] [NEW] trash will not empty
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gvfs This is on a new system with old hardware. amd X2 64 4200+>Nvidia 6150Se> 1Gig of ram. After a clean install and applying all updates when i delete a file to the trash, sometimes it shows up in the trash, and sometimes it does not. Trash icon is saying no trash and there is trash inside, also icon shows trash inside after i have deleted trash. Then when i go into trying to remove the trash i have to click two times on empty trash before it emptys. Also after doing this a couple times the empty trash tab becomes grey, then i can not empty trash. This happens on 32-bit ubuntu 8.04Lts and 64bit. Not sure if its a hardware issue. After rebooting it lets me empty trash a couple times then just replicates the same behaviour as before. Driving me Nuts. Thanks I miss my Ubuntu. ** Affects: gvfs (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- trash will not empty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275731 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gvfs in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
