[Bug 2027628] [NEW] First boot login doesn't capture keystrokes automatically if screen locks

2023-07-12 Thread Lee X
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS
gdm version: 42.0-1ubuntu7.22.04.3

Hi all, minor bug but it is annoying for my ADHD ass.

If I power on my PC, let it boot to ubuntu, and then immediately start
typing my password, it accepts the password without me needing to click
on my profile name at all.

If I walk away before logging in, and come back to it asleep, when I
wake it up, I have to click on the profile before I am able to enter my
password.

I am assuming the intended behavior is for it to always start accepting
input when you start typing, just like Windows. I believe it is a bug
that I need to click on the profile before it will register key inputs.

[Bug 1981115] Re: middle-click and secondary-click are sometimes swapped

2022-07-23 Thread X Ghosh
This is when starting up in Wayland btw. Starting up in Xorg only has
the mouse disappear until something forces a redraw of the mouse-cursor
like a desktop zoom-in setting.

[Bug 1982584] [NEW] wacom invisible cursor on startup, xorg 22.04

2022-07-22 Thread X Ghosh
Public bug reported:

With a Wacom One attached, the mouse cursor doesn't show.

The mouse cursor can be made to show if, after logging in using the
keyboard, you type the super-key, type "zoom", and arrow key over to
zoom, and activate the zoom functionality with the enter key. Then the
mouse cursor appears once your view is zoomed in, and you can deactivate
the zoom and go about everything as normal with the mouse cursor working
normally again.

[Bug 36812]

2018-06-08 Thread Freedesktop-x
(In reply to Nikolay from comment #155)
> There is now once more spike of activity here - probably because Ubuntu
> 17.04 was released recently which dropped this patch because it was not
> compatible with newer xorg. kyak has provided an updated patch, but it would

On Ubuntu 16.04.03 LTS I just went from using Unity to Gnome. With some
back and forth with lightdm vs. gdm and the screen lock issues I got
things working more or less until I stumbled over what probably are the
ripples of this old bug (and I couldn't agree more with Nikolay and his
comment).

I had two keyboard layouts running with Unity, and as everybody seems to
have, I used Alt-Shift to switch layouts, just like on my Windows
laptop. And like almost everyone else, I of course have Alt-Shift-Tab
set for cycling backwards through windows (after jumping through all
sorts of hoops to tell the window manager not to group windows of the
same app...).

I reported my issue at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=786257
which obviously was the wrong place. And now I found this bug here.

I haven't taken the time to understand all the details, so I apologize
for the outside perspective. Yet, I am of the opinion that it should be
possible to define shortcuts such that they trigger their event only
upon release, not upon press, because as noted by everyone else here it
makes it impossible to define "release" shortcuts that are "prefixes" of
other shortcuts, and this is a severe limitation that becomes highly
practically relevant for the usual keyboard layout switching shortcut
that just so happens to be a prefix of the usual window backwards
switching shortcut.

There have been much worse backward incompatibilities in Linux. And
while I hate seeing things break by such changes, here my very personal
view is that should this really present a problem that cannot be solved
in a backward-compatible way (e.g., by letting users distinguish between
"release" and "press" shortcut definitions) then so be it. What is this
compared to deprecating X11, then xorg and at some point also
Wayland...?

I'm not certain that's enough for X.org to be able to handle it. Any
changes to this should go in another bug anyway.

[Bug 1310902] [NEW] turn on screen magnifier on login screen will render it unusable

2014-04-21 Thread X
Public bug reported:

steps to reproduce the bug:
1, log out to the user switching screen
2, turn on "larger text"(not sure if necessary) and "zoom in" in universal
access setting(the upper right corner)

unlike what you would expect, the screen zooms in, the cursor becomes
giant, then, everything freezes(a giant cursor in the middle of the
noisy gray background), a small mouse cursor can be moved around, but
there's nothing to click.

can anyone tell me how to reset this?

[Bug 1195965] [NEW] Screen locking issue

2013-06-29 Thread babis x
Public bug reported:

When i turned on my laptop today for once more a small window opened telling me
that my system has a problem .Usually lately i ignore these messages because
they ask me to give my ubuntu password and for security reassons after all
these which are happenning in my computer, but this time i checked it little bit
more.
So i pressed report the problem and another window appeared .This new window
had the name "authenticate" and the following writting: Please enter your
password to access problem reports of system programs. An application is
attempting to perform an action that requires privileges.AUTHENTICATION IS
REQUIRED TO PERFORM THIS ACTION.Password...
Under this on the left bottom had also a small upside down triagle and the
word Details.
I pressed the Details and appeared: Action :com.ubuntu.apport.apport-gtk-root
  Vendor : Apport
Pressing the Vendor word SOMETHING VERY STRANGE HAPPENNED:
A new window came out: "Close Firefox. Firefox is already running, but is not
responding. To open a new window , you must first close the existing Firefox
process, or restart your system .OK .
BUT FIREFOX WAS NOT OPENED / AND THIS HAS HAPPENED IN THE PAST FEW TIMES .
I mean that quite few times has happenned that WITHOUT firefox opened the
system tells me THAT FIREFOX IS ALREADY RUNNING !!!
Any way i had to press OK to that so firefox opened by itself on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport.
I stop everything there and i put on the side this Authenticate window.I did
not gave my password (Please tell me if this comes out from you in UBUNTU , and
WHY FIREFOX it seems to be open when it is not )
After that i checked my hotmail account to see if you have sent me something
from the yesterday problems i had faced and reported to you.I had no answer so
i log out from hotmail and i went to my other email account in
AOL.(lifegoesonlifegoe...@aol.com) I succesfully loged in BUT when i tried to
chek my inbox the screen( i had only this window in AOL opened) got dark and
was not responding.I press Ubuntu Help and after while the screen got lighter
but i could check my emails,AGAIN got darker and i had to press alt+f2 several
times ( was not openning)and finally to send this report to you with all of
these details.PLEASE ONCE MORE I NEED YOUR HELP.

,after few efforts by ubuntu-help and the opening of the ubuntu desktop guide
,a new window open about a script(again it happenned when i was visiting
antipliroforisi.gr) ,the
script:http://connect.facebook.net/el_GR/all.js#xfbml=1:123 ,and sudenly
TOTALLY blocked.I couldn't do anything ,everything on the screen got darker
,all the windows by firefox, the ubuntu desktop guide window ,and even the
window of apport during collecting problem information window ,which i had open
by alt+f2 during my efforts to unblock the screen.I couldn't do anything .I
tried but at the end i had to cut the electricity again in order to shut
down.Today it started ok but half an hour ago the screen was blocked again ( i
was visiting 1.my email page in aol.com,2.theodotus.blogspot.gr and 3.
chaos.crisis.gr),i had to press again alt+f2 and here we are again.Thank you,i

[Bug 1184532] [NEW] Screen locking issue

2013-05-27 Thread babis x
Public bug reported:

People from ubuntu have a nice day first of all. Here in my computer
,problems keep on making my life more difficult than already is ,living
in Greece at this time of history. My screen keeps on locking ( blocked
some how, even that yesterday was not all of the times which was blocked
in a darker level).Yesterday i was trying to unblock it one more time
clicking on the ubuntu desktop help and the Firefox help ,came out a
window saying for a script which is resource://unity/unity-global-
property-in.tializer.js:369 , i press stop and everything was working
again .I was, after 5- 10 minutes working in my email account
lifegoesonlifegoe...@aol.com and again everything was blocked,I tried
again with ubuntu help ,finally the ubuntu desktop guide was open and
after a minute ,came out another window for another script which is
http://o.aolcdn.com/cdn.webmail.aol.com/37740/js/dojo-
custom/dojo2.js:196 , i was able after few efforts to press the stop
on this window and again everything was unblocked.Today since i open my
computer the problems start right away and when i open the libreoffice
to create by copy-paste from an open page (antipliroforisi.blogspot.gr)
and save ot the libreoffice window strted to get darker after with light
after darker and thi went on for 1 at least minute ,the same happen when
i trid to save it as a PDF.Any way everything was blocked again and
after few efforts i was able to press alt+f2 so to create this apport to
you, during even this the screen was blocked again for several times.I
HOPE that i will be able to send it to you and you to receive it as
well, because in my both email accounts 1) babisxanthopou...@hotmail.com

to my friends and they send me emails to my both accounts and i never
receive them WHAT CAN I DO with all these.I have a feeling that they
have totally control on my own computer.THANK YOU A LOT one more time.

[Bug 979805] Re: nautilus greys out valid options

2012-04-12 Thread Mister X
** Description changed:

When you are in a group that has full rights to edit files, but you are
not the owner, the "Create File/Folder" options are greyed out in
Nautilus although they shouldn't be. Despite being greyed out, clicking
  them does still work though.

- Practical example: the /var/www folder belongs to www-data:www-data and
- file permissions are set to 775. I add the regular user to that group to
- be able to edit files without requiring root access. He can now edit
- files and create folders, but the Nautilus buttons do not indicate this.

[Bug 129219]

2012-03-27 Thread Mbrubeck-x
Here's the code that constructs and opens the folder path:
https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/file/ae8de2241732/xpcom/io/nsLocalFileUnix.cpp#l1819

Note that it is not passed directly to Nautilus on the command line, but
instead goes through gnome_vfs_url_show_with_env(). We can't just pass
a filename to that function, because that will open the file itself in
its app (rather than showing it in Nautilus).

However we fix this, we should also make sure that it does not break
badly on old versions of Nautilus.

[Bug 869765] Re: Screen locked on lid close, suspend, user switch

2012-03-26 Thread X
this is such an odd idea, since there's already an option for auto
locking in "system settings-screen", why not use it, isn't it reasonable
to assume someone who wants auto locking would prefer it to happen
either after screen turns off or goes into suspend (by closing lid or
clicking menu)

[Bug 649809] Re: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits

2011-04-07 Thread alpha-X-geek
I don't see how it's Ubuntu One, as this bug occurs in Debian too. Also,
I disabled Ubuntu One upon a fresh installation of Maverick anyway. The
theme issue can disappear for a while and then come back again, hence
why people try fixes and think they've worked, but in fact they haven't
worked.

[Bug 107574] Re: Gzip or Bzip still runing after cancel Button is pressed

2011-02-12 Thread x
This is what happened to me:
1. I was trying to create a big tar.gz file from 2 GB source.
2. Progress bar doesn't show any progress show after a while I canceled it
3. I tried again creating a .zip file from the same source
4. Again, no progress, so I cancel it.
5. After a while my computer starts jamming due to out of memory (which I have
4 GB and normally max 1 GB of it is in use)
6. Then my computer starts shutting down my applications due to out of memory
errors
7. I finally manage to locate the cause after logging in to command line and
kill file-roller, but some data was already lost due to killed applications.

I see that this bug has been soon open for 4 years and that there are
several other faults, reported to upstream which are not fixed.

Suggestions:
- Remove that application from Ubuntu.
- Or fix it
- Or rewrite it
- Or build a system which takes down applications that consume huge loads of
memory before bad things start to happen. I never figured out why very small
applications are killed in out-of-memory situations, instead of the one
application that takes 90% of the systems memory and just keeps growing.

[Bug 575877] Re: gnome-keyring mysteriously asks for keyring password on startup

2010-06-02 Thread Mr. X
This bug shouldn't be marked as low importance. This is an usability
issue that impacts the very first impression of ubuntu.

As an example, I installed Ubuntu in a netbook for my parents.

Because they value simplicity, I made the netbook login automatically,
opening the web browser and skype immediately.

It worked perfectly until I upgraded to Lucid. It now asks for a
password to access the wireless network.

Advanced users may think this is low priority; but for the regular users
this is an usability killer.

Please give us a workaround -- or mark this as higher priority.

Remember: this is the very first impression of ubuntu.

[Bug 583381] [NEW] Large directory tree (200Mb) hangs Wastebasket

[Bug 392292] Re: Tooltip of the Nautilus search button is misleading

2010-05-19 Thread X I
Nautilus is indeed documented to search the contents of files but
doesn't.

Also there is no Places > Search for Files... (was that a suggestion or
is that how it's supposed to work).

I think the Ubuntu team should be split in to teams, i.e. UI designers /
programmers / testers / document authors etc. When programmers start
"designing" UI's things normally go horribly wrong... no offence but
designing user interfaces WELL is actually very difficult, although
everyone thinks they can do it... so much so that it took Microsoft
years to even start to get close. One example of people's incorrect
perception of how easy it is to design UI's is the fact that most people
think they can design websites... when in fact hardly anyone can!

Not everyone is a designer... people need to start focusing on their
strengths and ONLY their strengths. When people go outside their area
of knowledge then shit happens! lol... like if I tried cutting
someone's hair it would be disastrous!!! The open source community need
to start getting their act together with this. Even though it IS
volunteers surely everyone wants to design better products?

[Bug 582914] [NEW] Re-start after crash should automatically ask user to send log files + description

2010-05-19 Thread X I
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

The first re-start after a serious crash should ask the user to send
their log files (i.e. the system asks them "Do you want to send system
information plus a description to the Ubuntu development team regarding
the previous system crash?").

If they enter a description and press "Yes" then the appropriate log
files are automatically attached and sent.

Bug reporting should be effortless. Indeed there should be a way to
report bugs from one of the Ubuntu menu's. Registering with online bug
reporting tools and having to log in is a pain. To be fair most people
probably don't even bother, and of those that do sometimes I'm sure they
can't be bothered to log in and report ALL bugs. This is a very bad
situation.

Why not make it effortless to report bugs?

i should be able to go to "System > Report Bug" and it should
automatically have a pop-up of ALL applications installed that I can
choose from (e.g. "Nautilus (file browser)" etc). From there there's a
description field. I then click send... job done. My email is
automatically sent as part of the data without me having to log-in.
Come on people let's make life easier... I hate it with a vengeance the
fact that I have to register to about 8 billion different websites for
all the different products I use on different platforms. ALL operating
systems should have this built in.

The easier it is to report errors, then the more errors are captured.
Also the version information of the specified application would be
automatically sent (as the system knows what versions are installed).
The more bugs and more accurate information sent means a better quality
product, and happier people who report bugs.

The other thing would be that the appropriate log files and debug info
would be automatically sent with possible history usage (of course
giving the user privacy options etc). This would be the best thing EVER
:) Let's lead the way!

[Bug 582903] [NEW] nautilus search doesn't work as described in help

2010-05-19 Thread X I
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

EXPECTED RESULT: When using the search function in Nautilus (Go > Search
for Files...), according to the help it should search for filenames
matching the search text as well as the contents of files, i.e.:

In the Nautilus help is says:
"Enter characters present in the name or CONTENTS OF THE FILE or folder you
wish to find and press Enter".

ACTUAL RESULT: It just searches the filenames not the contents of files.

So either the help is wrong (hopefully not as searching contents of
files is useful), or there seems to be a bug in Nautilus.

Nautilus: 2.30.1
Ubuntu: 10.04 LTS

Same problem for me on complete new install of 10.04.

I burned a standard CDR... it burned OK but didn't eject.

all other eject methods seem to work.

[Bug 453605] Re: Make default mount umasks configurable

2010-05-07 Thread X-Ander
I have added the following lines to my /etc/fstab:

/dev/sdb1 /media/usbd1 auto
noauto,rw,user,shortname=mixed,dmask=02,fmask=0113,utf8=1,flush 0 2
/dev/sdc1 /media/usbd2 auto
noauto,rw,user,shortname=mixed,dmask=02,fmask=0113,utf8=1,flush 0 2

Now two USB flash drives are mounted as I want. I don't need more
because I have only two USB connectors free at my netbook.

The idea was suggested by http://hal.freedesktop.org/docs/DeviceKit-

If you are actually considering touch scrolling, than you should also
consider that touch screens are much less precise than mouse pointers:
the mouse contact area is exactly 1 pixel, while fingerprints spread
across a significant area. That is a good reason to keep the close
button out of the way.

I really love Ubuntu, and want it to succeed.

That's a very good point.

There's no sense moving the min/max/close buttons to the left, if the
scroll bars are still in the right.

Perhaps the UI designers were trying to open space for the
notifications? A better solution would be to display the notifications
in the bottom right.

That's a very good point.

If there are any reasons for the change, this should be tested
separately -- like Gnome Shell, which I love.

The worst thing to do, in my opinion, is to do a disrupting change in a
LTS.

2010-03-18 Thread Mr. X
Mark Shuttleworth wrote:

> we are not voting on design decisions.

Mark,

I completely understand and agree with your position -- you are the
benevolent dictator for life, and Ubuntu is not a democracy.

HOWEVER, I also understand and agree with most of the critics who say
that this particular change in the user interface is bad.

People gave different reasons for why the change is bad. I'll give you
another reason: touchscreens.

In the next couple of years we're going to see more and more touchscreen
devices. As you may know, our fingers are not as precise as mouse
pointers. If you put the close/minimize/maximize buttons on the left
side, people *will* click on these buttons accidently, when they try to
open the Applications menu. And that mistake, repeated over and over,
will be infuriating.

If you agree that we are going to see more and more touchscreen devices,
I hope you'll also agree that the close/minimize/maximize buttons should
stay out of the way.

You don't have to listen to our opinions, but please consider what is
best for the project in terms of usability.

[Bug 341357] Re: file-roller doesn't provide deletion of folders in some type of archives

2009-08-05 Thread X
I'm using Mint 7 (9.04) and right now, I just delete a folder (at least want
to..) in a .cbz (a "comic book" format, it's yust a zip renamed)
I press "del" over the folder and select ok whitout see that the option to
delete only selected files was unavailable.
The result is an empty file, this issue no occurs if the extension is zip
instead cbz..

[Bug 372132] Re: "Create Document" Templates difficult to use

2009-07-14 Thread l-x-l
As a recent ubuntu convert I can honestly say that the current behavior
of "Create Document" is completely useless. How often do "regular" users
want to create an "Empty File"? At a minimum templates should be
installed for creating:

1. OO Word Processor file
2. OO Spreadsheet
3. Text File (to replace the name "Empty File")

As it stands now there is zero functionality to the current behavior.

[Bug 160264] Re: [nvidia] compiz displays white screen when locked

2009-06-03 Thread l-x-l
I can verify the bug is still in Jaunty. Using NVidia driver version
180.44 (recommended driver) on a GEForce Go 7900 GS with Compiz enabled.

I used Savvas Radevic's fix as a workaround & it works but at the cost
of disabling screen savers.

[Bug 181703] Re: Brasero does not recognize audio CD or blank CD-R

2009-04-15 Thread X Y
For anyone following along at home, a bit of cross-posting here, but
I did some reading at the linked-to Gnome bugs:

  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=556449
  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=557561

Both of these bugs mention symptoms I am seeing -- Brasero is
incorrectly reporting a disc's size as zero, and then refusing to
burn it.

One thing I notice in the latter of those two bugs -- this seems like
it has possibly been fixed (?) in a later version (Brasero > 0.8.2).

What is the Ubuntu process for getting this program updated?

I'd be happy to chip in to help.

[Bug 181703] Re: Brasero does not recognize audio CD or blank CD-R

2009-04-15 Thread X Y
Hi both dentament and huiii,

Apologies if my comment came off as silly; Ubuntu is by far the
friendliest Linux, and it can be frustrating when certain very basic
functionalities don't work right off the bat.

Now maybe this information will help in solving this Bug:

On my system, none of GnomeBaker, Nautilus, or xcdroast worked for
burning an audio CD. I tried all of them. I also tried each program
using KDE as my window manager (to rule out that Gnome might have
anything to do with my issue [yes, it would seem absurd that a window
manager would affect this, but it was a simple experiment for me to
try]). I was also not able to burn from within KDE, trying all of the
previously mentioned programs.

However -- after I had failed trying the programs through KDE, I logged
into Gnome using the "failsafe" mode. After I did this, Brasero
suddenly decided that it _could_ see my blank disc and that the
available space on it was more than 0 bytes. I proceeded to burn an
audio CD, and that worked correctly.

After the successful burn, I put in another blank CD -- back to square
one. Brasero refuses to burn it, claiming it does not have any space.

My conclusion is this -- something is absolutely wrong in the
_SOFTWARE_. My media is just fine (been using discs from this spindle
for months with no problem, the one time I did burn something it is
absolutely fine), and my DVD-RW drive is functioning just fine, too.

Something is wrong at the software level. I'd be happy to try other
experiments and/or provide log files from either programs or the kernel
messages; someone let me know.

Using 8.10, this problem still exists. I am trying OpenSolaris in a VM
to see if I can workaround it.

[Bug 231739] Re: Totem "freezes" after several pauses

2008-06-02 Thread x
More info: I noticed that it is possible to recover by selecting e.g.
"skip forward", "skip backward", "next chapter/movie" or "previous
chapter/movie" option when the movie is frozen. The movie will restart,
but is playable again. Even "skip to" is usable and it can actually be
used as a workaround when the freezing happens as it allows continuing
from the same location.

Status for this bug is "incomplete", but I don't know how I could gather
more info. I can still reproduce the behaviour any time.

[Bug 231739] Re: Totem "freezes" after several pauses

2008-05-19 Thread x
The problem is that Totem doesn't actually crash, so gdb doesn't catch
anything where I could take a backtrace. Only the movie freezes, the GUI
still works perfectly. And despite of what I said before, I can
actually close the movie and reopen it to recover, without restarting
totem. So even if I would stop Totem and take a backtrace, the execution
point could basicly be anywhere.

[Bug 231739] Re: Totem "freezes" after several pauses

2008-05-18 Thread x
Totem was not on the frozen state when the pressed the report a problem
link, so the ProcMaps.txt and ProcStatus.txt might not provide any
usefull information. I wish I had known that those were also provided
with the report. I expected to see something like "See what information
is gathered from your system". Let me know if you need that information
and how I can provide it without opening a new bug report.
