[Bug 501037] Re: Cannot create a second desktop launcher on second head

2018-01-03 Thread jhansonxi
Eight years later I now feel like my life is complete.

Just kidding, I switched to Xfce years ago. If I need to run an old
Loki game port that can't handle multiple monitors I'll just use a VM.

[Bug 713431] [NEW] Volumes shown for mounts to dot directories

2011-02-04 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) i386
Nautilus 2.30.1

mount -t cifs //localhost/test /home/administrator/.should_be_hidden -o
uid=1000,gid=1000,ro

Nautilus shows this mount in Places sidebar and desktop. It is also
shown in file chooser dialogs such as Gedit. It is hidden in the view
the same as other dot directories/dot files.

Adding it to ~/.hidden and ~/.nautilus/globalhidden has no effect.

In my usage scenario, the CIFS mount is being used to override UID/GID
of a r/o branch for an aufs mount. The aufs filesystem doesn't have
that capability. Since the aufs mount point is the one intended for the
user (along with a hidden rw branch), the CIFS mount is useless and
distracting.

I reported this upstream already. Reposting here for reference.

[Bug 630504] [NEW] Need a way to merge skeleton gtk-bookmark with XDG additions

2010-09-04 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xdg-user-dirs

Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)
/etc/skel/.gtk-bookmarks consisting of entries for /home/public and
/home/local
Standard /etc/xdg/user-dirs.defaults

If a new user is added, xdg-user-dirs-update (or maybe it's xdg-user-
dirs-gtk-update) doesn't update the skeleton ~/.gtk-bookmarks so the
standard XDG bookmarks are not available in Nautilus. This makes it
difficult to automatically add custom bookmarks to new accounts when
they are not one of the well-known directories in user-
dirs.defaults. There also doesn't seem to be a way to specify a
different name for the bookmarks in user-dirs.defaults so it can only
default to the directory name.

[Bug 518862] Re: With wine installed, win32 programs fill the Open with another application dialog

2010-02-14 Thread jhansonxi
I think the problem is that Wine registers mime types in the native
desktop for anything an installed Windows application supports and there
is no easy way to manage them. These registrations are located in
~/.local/share/applications and moving the files elsewhere (not the
subdirectories!) removes the association and thus clears them from the
Open With dialog.

[Bug 520621] [NEW] Nautilus drag-n-drop broken on dual-head system

[Bug 520303] [NEW] Random bad behavior with dual-head system

2010-02-10 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

On the second display of a dual-head (non-xinerama) system, Nautilus on
the second head will develop random problems. This includes not
responding to mouse clicks on tree expansion, toolbar buttons refusing
to work, and a constant busy mouse cursor. Moving the mouse pointer to
the first head and back again resolves the issue (usually). This never
occurs with a Nautilus session on the primary display, even when
Nautilus is active on both screens.

[Bug 519529] [NEW] gnome-display-properties can't change resolution after full-screen app crash

2010-02-09 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

This is a problem that goes back to 8.04 (Hardy Heron) and probably
earlier. If a full-screen application changes resolution and later
crashes (or hangs and is killed by the user), the screen is not restored
and g-d-p can't seem to change it. For example, I just had a DarkPlaces
(enhanced Quake engine) game hang on exit on Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala).
The game was set to 1024x768 while the normal desktop resolution is
1280x1024. When I killed it from a VT, the screen was left at 1024x768.
When I attempted to change it back to 1280x1024 using g-d-p, it accepted
the change but nothing happened.

The solution (as always) is to use a terminal window and issue the command:
xrandr -s 1280x1024

I'm don't know if the problem is with g-d-p not making the change
request or the daemon not applying it. The logs don't show anything.
This occurs with my new Radeon HD 4770 [RV740] using fglrx and my old
Nvidia GeForce 7300 and I've encountered it on many different systems
I've built both x86 and x86_64.

[Bug 490676] [NEW] Places side pane gets confused with nfs mounts

2009-11-30 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'm on Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) using Gnome 2.28.1 and the included
Nautilus. To get around brainstorm #456 I have multiple nfs mounts in
fstab with noauto and user options similar to:

server:/srv/archive /home/user/server/archive nfs
defaults,noauto,user0 0

These show up as unmounted drives in the Nautilus places panel. If I
click on one it mounts but usually instead of adding the up-arrow icon
to the existing place to show that it is mounted, it duplicates the
place at the bottom of the list and adds the arrow to the duplicate. If
I click on the original place again I get an error message like Unable
to mount archive mount.nfs: /home/user/server/archive is busy or
already mounted. Other open Nautilus windows duplicate the pane.
Sometimes it will report a different nfs mount as if the places entries
are mismatched from the names shown. Sometimes all unmounted places
stop responding to mouse clicks (won't mount) while the mounted entries
act normal. Sometimes a new Nautilus window opens when Browse media
when inserted is checked, sometimes the existing window is used.
Sometimes I'll get a DBus NoReply error. Sometimes a timeout error
waiting for the mount to appear. Sometimes closing all the Nautilus
windows (but not killing the primary Nautilus process) corrects the
places panel, sometimes not even when the process is killed. Unmounting
all the nfs mounts and closing the windows seems to fix it (usually).

The usuallys could imply a timing bug of some sort.

All of this is normal to Nautilus as there is nothing in the logs.

I also noticed that the icons for nfs and nfs4 places are different with
the nfs4 icons being generic drives. I'm not sure if that is related or
not.

[Bug 311824] [NEW] Yelp doesn't search/show all available documentation

2008-12-27 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

When telling beginners to RTFM the most obvious and direct access is the
Ubuntu Help Center but currently it doesn't cover a lot of available
documentation included with packages. For example, London Law
(londonlaw) doesn't show up at all in the search results as it doesn't
have a man page (obviously a separate bug). It does have a manual in
/usr/share/doc/londonlaw but this file doesn't show up in the search
results so the user won't know it exists. Yelp 2.24.0 on Intrepid

[Bug 99276] Re: User and Groups does not inform user that manual UID already exists and create user groups.

2008-11-21 Thread jhansonxi
users-admin works much better on Intrepid (8.10). If I create a user
named admin it takes the existing admin group (112) and reassigns it a
new ID in the user range (like 1002) and adds the admin user to all the
normal user groups apparently without problems as there are no messages
about it. This way it provides Windows 9x-Me security without the
annoying Vista-like security warning pop-ups. Thanks!

[Bug 251337] [NEW] Shutdown from XFCE returns to login if inbound ssh session active

2008-07-23 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

(split off from bug #196816)
On Ubuntu Hardy Heron, if an inbound ssh session (from another system) is
active, a shutdown initiated from an XFCE session fails to shut down the system
and instead returns to the login screen. With a Gnome session the shutdown
proceeds normally. An outbound ssh session, from tty1 for example, does not
inhibit the XFCE-initiated shutdown sequence.

On Xubuntu Intrepid Ibex Alpha 2 this occurs with both XFCE and Gnome
(added via ubuntu-desktop). Neither will shut down if an inbound ssh
session is active.

I can't see any differences in the logs between a Gnome-initiated
shutdown and an XFCE-initiated one. The issue is 100% reproducible.

[Bug 251350] [NEW] Wrong speaker selected in Gnome on Intrepid

2008-07-23 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

HP Pavilion XG823, Celeron 700, using Intel 82801AA
Xubuntu Intrepid Alpha 2 + updates as of 20080723. Gnome added via
ubuntu-desktop.

In Gnome the audio output is routed to the PC speaker instead of the
speaker output jack. My economy USB-powered analog speakers may be low-
quality but their fidelity is definitely better than a mono piezo
element. Changing to any of the listed devices (ALSA, OSS, Pulse) does
not change the output port. Tested with audio stream from Totem and
VLC. Greeting sound at login screen (gdm) is normal. Speakers work
normally with XFCE session.

2008-06-25 Thread jhansonxi
I just encountered it again in Hardy but I also was having a crash issue
with gdm. I ran gdm-setup the first time out of XFCE and gdm segfaulted
dropping me back to a VT. I restarted gdm and tried again. After
selecting Happy Gnome with Browser and logging out, gdm died again and
didn't restart. I launched gdm again and got a different login screen
(Happy Gnome I think). After loading up XFCE again and checking gdm-
setup, it had switched to Random from Selected. After setting it back
to Selected Only and HG w/B, it retained the setting upon the next
login. I didn't have any additional gdm crashes after that even though
I tried to reproduce them.

[Bug 215302] Re: file-roller symlinks support broken

2008-05-13 Thread jhansonxi
Submitted:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=532983

Bug #189066 probably is not a duplicate as the conditions for it's
reproduction are completely different. However, these (and Gnome bug
462371) show that there are significant design problems with the current
implementation so it's probably best to leave them marked as duplicates
and re-evaluate symlink handling as a whole.

[Bug 210499] [NEW] Storage tab missing

2008-04-01 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

gnome-volume-properties in Hardy is missing the Storage tab found in
Gutsy. It appears that this functionality has moved to Nautilus
preferences but the menu entry is still named Removable Drives and
Media which is confusing as removable drive options are no longer
there.

[Bug 206889] Re: Power-manager reports incorrect battery percentage

2008-04-01 Thread jhansonxi
Try adding the Battery Charge Monitor applet to your Gnome panel and
compare it's state with the Power Manager applet. Also look in
/proc/acpi/battery/battery ID and cat info and cat state to see
what ACPI is reporting when the problem occurs.

[Bug 206889] Re: Power-manager reports incorrect battery percentage

2008-04-01 Thread jhansonxi
Compare the contents of info and state when it's working to when
it's not. Your issue seems different from my Power Manager problem
which often disagrees with the Battery Charge Monitor. Coincidently I'm
also using a Toshiba Satellite latop, a M35X-S114.

The /proc directory is virtual in that it does not really contain
files, just system information.

For more info on ACPI see Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACPI

[Bug 199614] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in ev_document_load()

[Bug 189066] [NEW] Don't follow symlinks

2008-02-04 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

File Roller 2.20.1
tar (GNU tar) 1.18
gzip 1.3.12
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=7.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=gutsy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu 7.10

I discovered that when creating an archive of a user's home directory
File Roller would run until it exhausts all free space even if the
amount of data in the folder was relatively small. I traced the problem
to symlinks in ~/.wine/dosdevices (like c: - ../drive_c or h: -
/home/user) which cause it to loop through other directories
repeatedly. It appears to ignore links to directories owned by root but
if they belong the the current user then it follows them. It also
doesn't seem to kill tar and gzip correctly when the archive creation
dialog is cancelled but this may be a different issue. Bug #124992 and
bug #117066 may be related.

System Administration Network. Under General tab set hostname to
http://hostname.com; then Close and reboot. Then add a key using apt-
key like the Wine deb repository (http://www.winehq.org/site/download-
deb). Result - GnuPG fails to add the key due to a temporary file
creation problem (probably because of the // in the hostname).

[Bug 122213] Re: Installing a gdm theme changes Selected Only to Random from Selected

2007-08-12 Thread jhansonxi
I have encountered this problem also. I normally use the Happy GNOME
with Browser theme with multi-user setups. In gdmsetup, if I change to
it from Human (by check box) and log out, I end up with a different one
in gdm. Logging in and bringing up gdmsetup again shows that instead of
the one I selected, Circles and Happy GNOME are selected with the Theme
setting set to random.

[Bug 99276] Re: User and Groups does not inform user that manual UID already exists and create user groups.

2007-07-14 Thread jhansonxi
I just encountered this same issue on a new Feisty (7.04) install when I
attempted to create a user name of staff. As is default in Ubuntu,
USERGROUPS=yes in adduser.conf so each new user gets their own group.
The group staff is a Ubuntu default with a GID of 50 so it couldn't be
used. No messages were displayed by users-admin and I didn't figure out
what the problem was until I tried to use adduser which informed me the
group already existed.

[Bug 120753] Nautilus refuses to give up copying lock file

2007-06-16 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Because I'm impatient and too lazy to set up a local repo, I often copy
the apt cache off a new system so I can copy it to other systems I'm
setting up. If I copy any file along with
/var/cache/apt/archives/lock as a non-root user, Nautilus pops up an
error that it Error while copying...lock cannot be copied because you
do not have permission to read it. If I cancel or skip it, it ends up
trying to copy it anyways and the Copying files dialog stays up.
Nautilus is still responsive but hogs the CPU. I have to kill the
process to get rid if it. I've run it out of a terminal window but no
messages are displayed. This may be another manifestation of Bug #39482

[Bug 117066] Directory duplication when creating tar

2007-05-26 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

GNOME file-roller 2.18.1
tar (GNU tar) 1.16
When a tar archive of a directory with subdirectories is created from within
Nautilus using right-click Create Archive, the resulting tar contains
duplicate subdirectories. Opening the archive in File Roller doesn't show the
duplicates. Extracting the archive doesn't produce any errors unless the
original directory structure used relative symlinks in such a way as to cause
some targets to be attempted to be extracted twice. The duplicates are
viewable from within Midnight Commander. Running File Roller directly and
creating a new archive does not result in duplicates in the tar. The only clue
is obtained by running Nautilus from a terminal:
(file-roller:7668): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_file_system_path_to_filename:
assertion `path != NULL' failed

[Bug 117066] Re: Directory duplication when creating tar

2007-05-26 Thread jhansonxi
This is an update for Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns by Loki. It uses
relative symlinks which result in an error upon extraction when a faulty
archive is made from it. Extract the contents with subdirectories.
From Nautilus, right-click and Create Archive (tar) with File Roller.
Open archive with Midnight Commander, duplicate subdirectories will be
present. File Roller shows no duplicates. Extract tar with either app
- errors will result.
