[Bug 395299] Re: gdm 2.26 has no graphical configuration tool

2009-11-03 Thread joewski
quotewhat issues especially make you think that the new gdm is not
suitable to use

I wouldn't be complaining if a tool had been built to configure the
login screen that was called something else. However there isn't even a
command line solution to this configuration issue.

It plain and simple the upgrade did not go as described or planned,
resulting in a bug which unfortunately incorrectly displays the
incorrect login screen. Until there is a solution this will remain a
bug, doesn't matter who made what decision, or who's fault it is. Its a
naked, for all to see bug, and that it.

[Bug 395299] Re: gdm 2.26 has no graphical configuration tool

2009-11-02 Thread joewski
The change in gdmsetup has created a serious bug in 9.10 that was not
present in 9.04.

Basically when I did an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 instead of having the ubuntu
login I ended up with the xubuntu login screen.
Now since the gdmsetup has changed there is no way to correct the problem.

I understand the need for making the desktop easy to use, but this
dumbing down is stupid.

[Bug 452679] Re: nautilus on drag n drop to network drive kills desktop

I have since positivily confirmed that the issue was dropbox. I uninstalled the

[Bug 452679] Re: nautilus on drag n drop to network drive kills desktop

2009-10-27 Thread joewski
Just to add I will monitor this issue and post updates as to the progress.
I have left messages on the dropbox forum indicating the problems with dropbox
and ubuntu.

Please note that dropbox is a closed source application so Ubuntu is
unable to help fix it. This post is a record for those currently looking
for a similar problems and may not know what it is.

I advise people using dropbox not to use it as of the current time as it
leads to instability in nautilus under certain circumstances, in
particular moving or copying files to and from samba nas drives. Or in
plain language microsoft windows drives.

I am very sure of this bug because it affected not one machine but
several from different classes of process and machine configurations.

[Bug 452679] Re: nautilus on drag n drop to network drive kills desktop

2009-10-18 Thread joewski
I checked the directories that you have mentioned Sebastien and found no crash
reports.
I have activated apport by setting the value to 1

I can reproduce the desktop crash consistently. I also have some clean
machines and will see if the crash occurs on those machines.

Interesting I test Ubuntu 9.10 on monday and did not have the same
problem.

I will do more testing.

[Bug 452679] [NEW] nautilus on drag n drop to network drive kills desktop

2009-10-15 Thread joewski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

On a simple drag n drop from the desktop to nautilus the desktop disappears.
What I mean by disappears is all the icons disappear.
This is a recent problem and I have noticed it over a number of computers
running 9.04 gnome.
To fix the problem I run nautilus from terminal.
Provided I do not close the terminal session the desktop session is restored.
If I perform the same action action that session will crash.

Here is a copy of the terminal session information.

[Bug 415846] [NEW] Asus M50SV Nividia Geforce 9500M brightness

2009-08-19 Thread joewski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

I have been installing on a laptop, this is the fix for fixing the
brightness which is very dark on this system.

The fix

The NVIDIA Geforce 9500M needs the latest version of the nvidia drivers
to function properly. However even with the new drivers its brightness
is still very dark. Until this fix is done.

On ubuntu have to change the sensor light level (light levels go from 0
to 15):

sudo -s
echo 15 /sys/devices/platform/asus-laptop/ls_level

This line can be added to /etc/rc.local file to permanently fix the
issue.

2009-04-03 Thread joewski
I have added VLC from th repository and found that it will play the
above mpg correctly. I knew the file was ok because I tested again under
windows but I thought I'd better prove the file could be loaded and
played in Ubuntu also.

I have retested after installing VLC and the latest round of updates and
still no update has fixed the mpg playing issue. I was hoping that VLC
might add the required codec to the player, but it appears that was not
the problem.

[Bug 172615] Re: totam won't play mpg files

2009-03-31 Thread joewski
I think Totem fails to identify that the codec is missing, or the codec
is broken. In any case the mpg file fails to play.

I have noted that a number of movie files types suffer from this
problem.

If it is a codec problem may I suggest that totem have a manual button
added, called search codec for this file. That way the user could
search for the codec manually.

I also know that if you search the internet nearly all files can be
played with the right libaries. To make it easier for the user, maybe
those solutions need to be incorperated as well.

Also I am aware of commerial codec's that are sold throught the Ubuntu
online shop. Those files could also be added as a solution.

[Bug 352123] [NEW] Nautilus 2.26.0 unable reenter network drives

2009-03-30 Thread joewski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When a NAS such as FreeNAS is used and ubuntu mounts a drive via a samba
share, Ubuntu mounts and accesses the drive correctly. While activity
is occuring the connection seems to be reliable.

However if after a period of time the user does not use the connection
(say half an hour) Nautilus or via the desktop icon the user is unable
to enter the network drive.

The only way to fix the problem is to drill down from
placesNetworkFreeNASlandrive and then it NAS drive would mount. A
second icon is then added to the desktop.

If however you drill down with placesNetworkWindows
NetworkWORKGROUPFreeNASlandrive the drive will not mount and displays
the message.

Could not display smb://freenas/landrive/ The file is of an unknown
type

I know there is not issue with the FreeNAS drive as it is serving files
to my xp windows machines just fine. I have two machines with 9.04
installed and both exhibit the same behaviour.
