[Bug 2062377] Re: Ubuntu 24.04: gnome-shell crashes on Xorg if a legacy X11 cursor theme is selected

2024-07-08 Thread Ken
Hi - I rebooted and tried again with the same result. I've attached the
mutter packages as reported by synaptic. It appears that I've installed
mutter, but not libmutter, so will try to correct that tonight.

2024-07-05 Thread Ken
Hi,

Have just tested and it failed, giving me the same white screen as
before.

I installed mutter from noble-proposed, then installed gnome-tweaks, ran
Tweaks, and changed the cursor to Redglass.

[Bug 1955850] Re: /etc/X11/Xresources no longer loaded, error in patch

2024-04-27 Thread Ken Gilmer
This seems to be preventing the Regolith X11 desktop session from
properly initializing. Due to this bug, the gdm3-produced Xsession does
not initialize xrdb, which is a required component in Regolith. While a
workaround seems simple enough, I guess any X11-based gdm3 session with
applications that use Xresources may not be properly initialized on a
system with this bug. As such, IMO this bug deserves to be fixed.

[Bug 2058118] [NEW] CPU usage too high. System either stops for a minute or greatly lags

2024-03-16 Thread Ken Wagner
Public bug reported:

CPU usage for gnome-shell skyrockets 25% to over 125%. System stops for
a minute or longer. Other times everything lags and stutters.

1. Does not matter if I use X.org or Nvidia (470 tested release for my GT720
card with two monitors).
2. Turning Gnome Extensions on and off doesn't help.
3. Using Ubuntu 23.10.Updated regularly.
4. This issue started about 7 months ago.

I expect the halts and stutters to go away. Nothing has helped so far.
I mostly use Firefox 123.0.1, logseq 0.10.7, US Gov weather, Nautilus,
LibreOffice Writer, Thunderbird Email, gedit and text editor (gnome) and VS
Code + Rust 1.76. Doesn't matter on using or not using any of these apps. I
usually have 4-5 workspaces over my two monitors.

Kindly advise. Glad to help if I can. What else would you like to know?

Thanks,

Ken Wagner

[Bug 2016395] [NEW] control-center sound using audio devices without consent

2023-04-15 Thread Ken Anderson
Public bug reported:

(Reporting for blind user ken)

gnome-control-center sound is forcing the selection of an input device
you do not have consent to use.The only option listed is CM108
microphone. None is not an option; it needs to be. Motherboard audio
is also missing.

Just because an audio device exists does not mean you have consent to
use it for desktop audio purposes. NONE must always be an option.
Audio output device also lacks none, though in this case it isn't
causing an issue because there is another audio output device. However,
using this audio output device without permission is a federal crime.
Unauthorized radio transmissions are not allowed.

Reproduce:
*
* Plug in digirig mobile which contains a USB hub, CM108 audio, and CP210
serial and ham radio rig interface circuitry.
* Enable pipewire as described here:
https://gist.github.com/the-spyke/2de98b22ff4f978ebf0650c90e82027e?permalink_comment_id=4116017
* Open control-center sound.
* Try to set output device to none.

2022-09-06 Thread Ken VanDine
I've tried removing them all, and still seeing the crash. Of interest
though, it looks like only some apps using the indicator are triggering
the crash. For example, starting mattermost-desktop or discord triggers
the crash when it registers the appindicator. But starting telegram-
desktop doesn't. Perhaps something about the libappindicator being
utilized? telegram-desktop isn't using the content snap.

[Bug 1988315] Re: gnome-shell crash with wayland on kinetic

2022-08-31 Thread Ken VanDine
I tried disabling the system extensions and logging in again, which did
work. I was able to reenable them all and gnome-shell was still working
again. Then of interest, launching an app that uses an appindicator
caused the shell to crash. I can reliably reproduce this, the
appindicator extension is triggering the crash. It happens when an app
registers with the indicator, which I have slack and mattermost set to
autostart on login, which in turns triggers my crash at start.

I've confirmed that nvidia-470 is getting installed in jammy, not
nvidia-495. AFAIK this is a bug, I thought nvidia-495 was in jammy?
Without it we don't get a wayland session with nvidia.

[Bug 1809685] Re: The evince application often freezes

2021-08-16 Thread Ken Ryan
I can confirm it happens to me also in 21.04. The PDF opens fine for me
but the instant I hit print the evince process pegs the CPU and stays
there indefinitely. Files are on the local disk. x86_64 architecture.

The most recent PDF that did this to me is here:
https://www.lcps.org/site/handlers/filedownload.ashx?moduleinstanceid=305856=381294=New%20Health%20form%20MCH-213G-032014.pdf

Printing worked fine with 20.04, then I upgraded to 21.04 about a month
ago and have not been able to print a PDF ever since.

One possibly interesting bit:

[Bug 1917926] [NEW] Window focus issues in 3.38.3-3ubuntu1

2021-03-05 Thread Ken VanDine
Public bug reported:

I switched to an Xorg session in hirsute today after upgrading gnome-
shell and mutter packages which just hit the release package. There are
very strange focus issues. Clicking on a window doesn't raise it to the
front, alt-tab seems to only switch between a subset of the one windows.
It's impossible to move windows with the mouse and resizing does not
work.

This occurred with:
gnome-shell=3.38.3-3ubuntu1
mutter=3.38.3-3ubuntu1

Downgrading these packages fixed it:
gnome-shell=3.38.3-2ubuntu2
mutter=3.38.3-2ubuntu1

** Affects: mutter (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Critical
 Status: Triaged

[Bug 1883015] [NEW] [SRU] gnome-terminal to 3.36.2 and vte2.91 to 0.60.2

2020-06-10 Thread Ken VanDine
Public bug reported:

[ Description ]

Update as part of the GNOME 3.36 stable release series

[ QA ]

Check you can launch the terminal and use it. Maybe check that different
themes, launching a custom command, custom terminal launchers, etc work.

There is a standing SRU exception for GNOME:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates/GNOME

[ Regresison potential ]

If the update causes issues they should be pretty apparent when running
gnome-terminal.

[Bug 1864307] Re: Many apps have no icon in Software on Focal

2020-05-11 Thread Ken VanDine
** Description changed:

Many applications have no icon displayed in GNOME Software 3.35.91 on
latest Ubuntu Focal. See the attached screenshot.
+
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ * Some apt packages do not include an icon in snap-store
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * Open snap-store, search for GCompris and confirm there is an
+ appropriate icon
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * Very low. Previous Ubuntu releases including apt-config-icons based
+ on the depends in gnome-software. This just adds an apt config that can
+ be used to fetch icons for apt packages via apt.

[Bug 1873658] Re: Deb Files are not associated with an application that manages packages

2020-05-06 Thread Ken VanDine
** Description changed:

- When you download a DEB file within 20.04 Ubuntu Beta and you double
- click it the file is opened by the archive manager. I would expect the
- installer to open the file just like in previous versions of Ubuntu.
+ [Impact]
+
+ * When a deb is downloaded the default handler is not capable of
+ installing on 20.04.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ We should perform this test on Ubuntu 20.04 as well as some flavors to
+ ensure we do not regress.
+
+ * Download any deb in firefox, double click on the downloaded file
+- On Ubuntu this should open "Ubuntu Software"
+- On flavors it should open whatever their default app for handling debs is
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * For Ubuntu, very low, rarely would a user expect to open a deb with
+ file-roller
+
+ * Other flavors of ubuntu are overriding this default and should not be
+ affected. We do need to test this on other flavors to ensure their
+ defaults are still honored.

launch to find software. This should use the system default. For

[Bug 1867610] Re: snap-store cannot install local deb packages

2020-04-22 Thread Ken VanDine
I am thinking is some race condition here. It works reliably for me on
a fresh install of focal in a VM but on my desktop which has lots of
history and lots of packages installed I see the "not supported" error
sometimes.

I'll re-open the issue and we'll continue to work on it.
