In Preferences > Power Manager you can select the display time, for instance on my jaunty system I set mine to the lowest - 11mins and after that time it shuts off power to the monitor completely. The solution to this issue I believe is to wishlist that the default setting be less than 40mins which it currently is, so will not show a black screen for a long period of time.
