[Bug 808106] Re: Shortcut for changing tabs should be Ctrl-PgDn/PgUp

2013-06-26 Thread markba
I don't understand. In the upstream bug report it is stated that Ctrl-
Alt-PgUp/PgDn is part op GTK. I tested it and indeed it works with both
gedit and nautilus. However, nautilus does also have Ctrl-PgUp/PgDn. Is
that part of GTK also or is it a specific implementation of nautilus?
And: if it's part of GTK, how come gedit does not have that behaviour?

[Bug 1185186] [NEW] Content of sidepanel does not stay the same when toggling

2013-05-28 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When the sidepanel is on when the editor starts, the content is correct,
showing maps and folders of the opened file. But when switched off en on
again (F9), the panel appears again but with the default folder
selected: /home/username, rendering it nearly useless. Expected is
that the panel re-appears with the same data as before.

Bluefish 2.2.4, Ubuntu 13.04.

[Bug 873191] Re: Ubuntu starts with lowest brightness on HP G62[regression]

2012-09-22 Thread markba
My hardware:

Intel: $ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 02)

ATI: $ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 02)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Manhattan [Mobility
Radeon HD 5000 Series]

Strange thing is that the model with ATI reports 2 different cards, and
that in a laptop, how curious. The ATI-model differs slightly from the
one smola has in #14.

I have both installed with 10.04 and they work just fine. My hope is
that there is a solution before 10.04 gets obsolete (2013).

[Bug 873191] Re: Ubuntu starts with lowest brightness on HP G62[regression]

2012-09-18 Thread markba
By sheer coincidence (what are the odds?), I happen to have 2 optically
identical HP G62's, one with a Intel-card and one equipped with ATI.
Both suffer from the same brightness problem, very weird indeed. The
remark of Ian at #10 might be correct: maybe the drivers are mixed up,
in a way neither of the gfx's work.

As I happen to have both machines at the same time (they are from people
who asks me to put Ubuntu on it), I can do tests on both machines, which
could help in solving this bug. I'm looking forward to any suggestion. I
post the exact specs later, when I have them on hand.

2012-09-15 Thread markba
Please upgrade to a recent version first (stable 3.4 series or unstable 3.5
series) - 3.3.92 is an old unstable development version.
A I indicated before, I'm using a stable version 3.4.2.3 (stock Ubuntu 12.04),
*not* a development version; so as far I can see, that would be OK.

And what is the source of the assumption that I'm using 3.3.93? Is that
from the attached log file? In that case, version numbering in that file
is wrong I guess.

[Bug 910063] [NEW] Window of EOG does not has focus when opened from Nautilus

2011-12-30 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When an image is opened from Nautilus, thus starting the the standard
image viewer, EOG, this window does not has the immediate focus. A user
has to click into the window to move the focus to EOG.

This problem is especially cumbersome when EOG is opened maximized: a
user can not see that the global menu which is unhidden when moving the
mouse to the title bar, is *not* the menu of EOG (it is the menu of
Nautilus...). When trying to close EOG, a user *actually* closes the
former window (= Nautilus). Because the user see nothing changing
(because a hidden window underneath is closed), he clicks another time
and only then, the EOG window is closing. The user expects to come back
to Nautilus, but he will not find it.

I don't have to explain how confusing this is.

[Bug 855048] Re: Nautilus progress window does not minimize to icon tray

and look at the progress in the unity launcher
At first, I was under the impression that it was only a *visual* clue, the
progress bar on the unity launcher icon.

But I just recently discovered that there is also a *quicklist item* to
reveal the progress window, like it was in 11.04 but than with a
indicator. In a whole, this design decision feels right: more emphasis
on the launcher and less clutter.

I would like to share this info for people who also are in search for
the hidden progress window.

What is odd, is that the locale of the remote seems to be set to nl_NL,
but this is the locale of the host system. It looks like Ubuntu is

no error messages.

[Bug 846270] [NEW] Cancel search with Esc would be good

When searching, the proces can only be stopped by opening the menu and

this shortcut can be universal for all long during actions in Nautilus

[Bug 846277] [NEW] When in list-mode, creating folders or files is not possible

2011-09-10 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When Nautilus is set to list-mode (Ctrl-2), it is not possible to create
a folder or a file. This is only possible on the white area. But when a
list is too big, there is no white area (below the list), so it is
nearly impossible to create a new folder (or file), only by creating a
new tab or nautilus window which is not very intuitive.

The good thing about list mode is that you can easily drill down in a
folder structure. This bug is the only reason why I do not go into list-
mode by default.

[Bug 846289] [NEW] Action Properties in places menu is not available, like in the breadcrumbs menu

2011-09-10 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

When opening a menu on the breadcrubs, there is a Properties item
available. This one is not there when you rightclick on the Place pane
menu.

Use case: when trying to see for the free space on a device (USB-stick
or -disk), you have to click on the device in the PLaces pane, then move
to the breadcrumb in the right pane, activate the menu and choose
Properties. It is more intuitive that this particular action in
available in the Places pane menu.

It could be that there are more several actions which are inconsistent,
but this is the one I'm encountering always. From a technical POV, I
think there should be no distinction between the several menu's (one
menu for all), thus providing optimal consistency.

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-06-11 Thread markba
In my situation, the sound icon has disappeared, whereas most people are
complaining about doubling the sound icon. It is really quite odd,
because the sound icon is part of the indicator-applet, and other
indicators like network manager are (still) visible; that means that
somewhere, the configuration of that particular applet has gone wrong.

Furthermore, the distance between the applets which have gained (by
design) in 10.04, is back where is was before: now the applets are
positioned right next to each other, just like it was in 9.10.

I've upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 several weeks ago and right after the
upgrade, everything is fine. The disappearance of the sound icon and the
removal of the distance space happened simultaneously, from about last
week.

[Bug 486089] Re: CPU goes to 100%, game is not playable

After changing the theme, form 'plain' to 'tango flat' or 'tango shaded'
, the game was playable (again). However, changing the theme back to
'plain' did not lead to any difference, i.e. the bug was not
reproducable. It could be that het theme changing twice has some kind of
positive effect.

A point of interest: changing a theme, leads to a crash. I post a

[Bug 388656] Re: Non-intuitive term Move to trash

2009-12-11 Thread markba
I don't believe it would be the correct decision
in this case to do what Windows does

Well, in fact, 'Delete' in Windows *actually* means 'Move to trash',
because that is what is does. If we take it this way, we could say that
only Windows is not intuitive (not describing what it actually does),
and Ubuntu and Mac do the job well. But because everyone is 'trained' in
Windows, I guess we take that for granted. Kind of a paradox.

BTW, in Windows Shift+Delete bypasses the trashbin.

[Bug 486089] [NEW] CPU goes to 100%, game is not playable

2009-11-20 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnometris 2.28.0

It seems like the game is reacting on the keys (up, down, left, right),
but very slowly, because of the high CPU.

It works fine in Jaunty, but not on a clean install on Karmic (or even
with a live-CD).

It is especially problematic because gnometris is installed by default
(or can be run from the live-CD) and new (non-technical) users who are
likely to to try those little games have a bad first look on Ubuntu.

[Bug 273294] Re: Rhythmbox can not use smb:// as library location

2009-10-21 Thread markba
Very odd that in karmic it seems to work. Maybe it is something specific
to my setup, but I cannot imagine that, because 'everything' except RB
seems to work with gfvs. I'll do a couple of more tests, to other samba-
shares on another server maybe.

[Bug 273294] Re: Rhythmbox can not use smb:// as library location

2009-10-20 Thread markba
None of the workarounds work on Jaunty
- terminal: gnomevfs-ls smb://lin01/public/music/all
- entering a ~/.gvfs path in rhythmbox preferences (this is immediately
translated by the gui into smb://server/share
- removing /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstgnomevfs.so (and rebooting)

I tried also:
- entering a ~/.gvfs path in gconf-editor
- make a connection through ssh via gvfs

In Karmic this is also not working (tried all workaround as on Jaunty).
I noticed that the file libgstgnomevfs.so is indeed not installed (as
indicated by Sebastian), but nevertheless, no go.

It seems like RB doesn't 'understand' gvfs, in contrast to Totem, etc.
and this bug is not fixed.

[Bug 273294] Re: Rhythmbox can not use samba as library location

2008-11-15 Thread markba
This bug only takes place when using a gvfs connection (smb://...). When
mounting through smbfs in /etc/fstab, it all workes fine. This can
considered as a workaround. Also, title should be changed, more
detailed, Samba it self is not to blame.

[Bug 137606] Re: nautilus in lookup mode has no icon view

2007-10-03 Thread markba
Well, it's not exactly a bug but merely a feature request...
When I want to open a file, say in gedit, after 'File', 'Open' a 'File Open
Dialog' appears (caption: 'Open files...'. I my terminology I call this a
lookup dialog, your description of 'file selector' is probably better.
In this particular dialog, I'm missing the option that I cannot switch to icon
mode for preview purposes (in stead of the standard list mode), see the
attached mockup image.

What version of Ubuntu do you use: feisty
What is the lookup mode: standard dialog when opening a file in an
application, say gedit, gthumb, etc.
I've added a mockup: normally files are shown in a list, but I activated an
icon view
This icon view is normally available nautilus where you can choose list or icon
view, except in typical lookup dialogs.

[Bug 137606] nautilus in lookup mode has no icon view

2007-09-05 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When using nautilus in lookup mode, i.e. browse for a file for opening
or selecting, the list of files is always in list mode. It would be very
handy when one can change to icon mode, because then there's
automatically a preview.

This has especially much value when browsing for an image, say for
adding an attachmant in a gmail message within firefox.

Note. special lookup screens for example eog already have a preview, but
this is a special mode, this should be generic.

[Bug 133208] gthumb does not always activate save button

2007-08-17 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

Some actions in gthumb resulting in changing a picture, do not activate
the save button. Hence it is not possible to save the changed picture.

Misbehaved actions involved under 'Image' menu :
- Color Balance
- Hue-Saturation
- Brightness-Contrast

Similarity: all misbehaved actions have a preview function. Other
actions like 'Enhance', 'Negative' or 'Desaturate' (to name a few) act
immediately (without a preview) on the picture. These functions do
activate the save button as expected.

Temporary work around: use the save as-function, and choose to overwrite
the file when asked.

[Bug 85780] Re: gThumb selection for red eye reduction does not work

2007-03-20 Thread markba
After examining this behaviour again (as you pointed out) I can not make
a selection. I *thought* I should make a selection, because the label on
the right upper side says 'Selection'. As it turns out, this is a
position and not a selection (should have 4 points and not just 2).

Next, I just clicked in an red eye area and nothing happened.

Guess my problem is two sided:
- red eye removal does not work at all (at least, it seems to in my case)
- label 'Selection' should be 'Position' to prevent user errors (not critical)

As I mentioned before, I recall this functionality has been working
before.

Changed the original description.

** Summary changed:

- gThumb selection for red eye reduction does not work
+ gThumb red eye reduction does not work

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gthumb

+ Changed description (see my comment below):
+ - red eye removal does not work anymore
+ - label 'Selection' should be 'Position' so it is celar for the user the he
isn't supposed to make a selection but just click
+ Also changed the summary.

[Bug 86233] Re: nautilus uses filenames over network (for speed reason)

2007-02-24 Thread markba
Currently, my real problem seams to be this: I cannot open a (bash) file
with gedit through Nautilus.

First try: double click. Because Nautilus has no knowledge about the
file type, this is the error message I get: Cannot open
ssh://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/usr/local/sbin/3a-transcode: No application
suitable for automatic installation is available for handling this kind
of file.. This can be considered as normal because of the unknown file
type.

Second try. Make a file association to this file: Right click,
Properties, Open with, Add, Select 'Text editor'. This does not work
because the selected program cannot be added, probably because the file
type is unknown. Error message: Could not add application to the
application database. This can be considered as normal because of the
unknown file type.

Third try. Right click, Open with another application, select 'Text
Editor'. I get the same message as when I'm trying to change the file
association (see second try): Could not add application to the
application database. This cannot be considered as normal because I
want to open the file only *this* time with the selected application.

Fourth try. Open gedit, browse to the ssh'ed file and open it. This
works.

My guess that this is my problem: just because Nautilus cannot add the
application due to the unknown filetype, blocks me from opening a file
with a application of my choice. Ofcourse, if SSH gives the correct file
types back, this problem is not likely to exist.

Note. This optimization which you mention is for SSH connections only?
When connecting through Samba (static mount of gnome-vfs), file types
are (normally) read.

I've tested this again with Rhythmbox 0.9.8 (updated a few times since I
reported the bug), everything seems to work right now.
Consider it solved?

2007-02-19 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

A bash file browsed with Nautilus over SSH does not show the correct

[Bug 83822] Gedit displays a warning when saving a file a samba share

2007-02-07 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

When saving a file on a samba share, gedit displays a warning (see attachment).
After the warning, the file is saved wihout a problem. This happens only when
the share is mounted through the mount command.
When saving the same file through gnome-vfs, everything is working OK.
Setting 'Create a backup copy of files before saving' does not have an
influence.

[Bug 83491] Re: Shortcut Ctrl-C not working in Nautilus treeview

2007-02-06 Thread markba
I'm a bit disappointed. The upstream bug is from may 2005 and also this bug is
classified as wishlist meaning it has a very low priority (lowest?). We are
talking about useability (people switching over from Windows for example) where
it is expected these things just work.
Altogether, this means this bug will not be solved very soon and that's a pity.
Sorry if i'm a little emotional on this thing.

[Bug 83491] Shortcut Ctrl-C not working in Nautikus treeview

2007-02-05 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When Nauilus is operated with a treeview in the left pane, it is
possible to copy a folder with the right-click menu, command 'Edit'.
This folder can than be pasted anywhere where desired. However, this
same copy operation is NOT possible through the assigned shortcut
Ctrl-C. When issueing this command, nothing happens.

Within the top 'Edit' menu, the copy command is grayed out, meaning not
available, although this functionallity actually works. May be the
graying out is the reason while the shorcut Ctrl-C is not working.
Probably, Ctrl-C is connected to the (disabled) menu item.
