And finally, here is nautilus, under metacity, with indicator-applet-

I have done as indicated, but the application menu still does not show

I have System Settings > Appearance > Behavior > Show the menus for a

This works for all of the other applications that I've run, but not for
nautilus. Is there no way to get the menu back in nautilus the same as
for the other apps?

[Bug 1126592] [NEW] Nautilus' tooltip hides the last file

Creating a bookmark will allow the user to go to an automounted NFS

reasonable one for a medium-to-large-sized organization with many
automounted NFS directories.

[Bug 776397] [NEW] GConf error: Failed to contact configuration server

2011-05-03 Thread msp3k
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gconf

Login takes an exceedingly long time. When the desktop does finally
appear, a window appears with the following error message: GConf error:
Failed to contact configuration server; the most common cause is a
missing or misconfigured D-Bus session but daemon. See
http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: GetIOR
failed: Timeout was reached)

Other similar errors have been reported, but they all seem to be in
response to SSH or remote desktop logins. This is a normal login,
although the user home area is NFS-mounted from another host via
LDAP+NFS+AutoFS. This auto-mounted methodology works properly on all
other hosts running Ubuntu-9.10. The problem host differs in that it is
running Ubuntu-11.04.

[Bug 773232] [NEW] gnome-volume-control freezes with Waiting for sound system to respond

2011-04-29 Thread msp3k
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

Cannot change the volume, clicking on Sound Preferences... or running
gnome-volume-control from the command line both result in a Waiting for
sound system to respond window. The program will wait forever and
never continue beyond this point.

Playing sounds from the command line works fine with the following example:
$ aplay /usr/share/sounds/purple/alert.wav

And alsamixer works from the command line.

For this particular sound card, several reports have been seen where users have

[Bug 248236] Re: panel is blank at 1st login

2010-04-30 Thread msp3k
This bug affects me as well.

I am using an up-to-date Ubuntu Karmic amd64.
w/ gnome-panel 1:2.28.0-0ubuntu6
w/ kernel 2.6.31-21-generic

We have around 30-some-odd users, but only one user is affected by this
bug.

The user is not using compiz.

All user home areas are mounted via AutoFS, but the user's home area
physically resides on the machine that she uses the most often. (I have
not tested the bug on machines that require an NFS mount yet.)

All user authorization is managed via LDAP.

After moving the user's home directory to another machine the bug followed.
Machine #1's video: nVidia Corporation C79 [GeForce 9400] (rev b1)
Machine #2's video: ATI Technologies Inc M76XT [Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT]

Each time this bug happens, the following error can be seen in the log files:
syslog:Apr 30 10:23:48 uca kernel: [ 65.540326] gnome-panel[2662]: segfault
at 7f80dd5a4f08 ip 7f80de698f00 sp 7fff6a0b8ef0 error 4 in
libc-2.10.1.so[7f80de623000+166000]

To reproduce:
Power the machine off
Power the machine on
Log in -- 99% of the time the user's panel will be blank.
Gnome-panel does not respond to clicks and the user cannot log out or start a
terminal.
Using ctrl-alt-delete, the user can log out (users are not allowed to reboot or
shut down, but clicking on reboot or shut down will log them out).
A subsequent login will work fine.

Logging in remotely and typing the following command also seems to fix the
problem, without the need to log out and back in:
pkill -u user -HUP gnome-panel

[Bug 481315] [NEW] Update Manager fails to install updates, clicking Install Updates button has no effect

2009-11-12 Thread msp3k
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

Sometimes when updates are available, the Update Manager window will
appear. Sometimes, clicking Install Updates will have no effect.
This only seems to happen when the Update Manager window appears on it's
own. If I select System Administration Update Manager, then the
Install Updates button will work just fine. (I've had this problem
with my 9.04 installation too, but not with 8.10.)

[Bug 481315] Re: Update Manager fails to install updates, clicking Install Updates button has no effect

2009-11-12 Thread msp3k
This happened on a second Ubuntu machine (this second one is running in
VirtualBox on an OSX machine).

I have an strace log to contribute, it it's helpful. The strace command
line was:

strace -f -F -tt -x -e trace=all -e signal=all -e read=all -e write=all
-o ~/Desktop/update-manager-strace.txt -p 1848

The point where I click Install Updates button happens at
08:43:10.464345

** Attachment added: A trace of Install Updates button click failure in
update-manager
