[Bug 260765] Re: DVD playback broken in Intrepid because of resindvd
Resindvd as found in the bad plugins set is missing important features of DVD navigation and is not robust. This is why the project is in the bad plugins set and not the good plugins set. The intent of the original bug was that DVD's would not play at all but in the progress of the Intrepid development cycle that particular problem was fixed. This major issue breaks about half of my DVD collection and still exists in this SVN build of resindvd. Please note, it does not exist with Hardy as resindvd was not used. 2. Seeking is still broken. 3. Trying to go back to menu during title playback is still broken. 4. Subtitle functionality is still broken. 5. Audio functionality is still broken. 6. Multi angle DVDs are still broken. Onkar, Im thankful for the work youve done with this and Im sure that when upstream is in a better state you will be able to help deliver a great DVD experience on Ubuntu with gstreamer. The problem is the changes with totem using resindvd for a production release version thats very shortly to be released is that the whole experience with gstreamer for DVD playback is much more worse than what it was under Hardy. Some additional problems to the list: 4. Subtitle functionality is broken - subtitles do not appear when a user selects them in the totem menu and also the list of available subtitles the dvd supports is not correctly identified. 5. Audio functionality is broken - audio tracks are not changed when a user selects them in the totem menu and also the list of available audio tracks the dvd supports is not correctly identified. 6. Multi angle DVDs fail to be dected and totem fails to switch angles when a user attempts too. I suspect there is a problem when resindvd has to switch between DD 5.1 and a stereo audi stream, where I think it results in stopping playback and giving a stream error dialogue window. Im still testing and diagnosing this issue. On issue 2 I reported earlier, I can confirm that all methods of seeking via chapters, via dragging the seek bar or via selecting a new section of the seek bar are broken. Overall, resindvd in the last bad plugins gstreamer release has a very poor dvd user experience. -- DVD playback does not work anymore https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/260765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gst-plugins-base0.10 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 260765] Re: DVD playback does not work anymore
Sebastien I can assure you that gstreamer packages were downloaded and installed onto my AMD64 test system following your comments. If you supply the name of the configuration item in question I can look through the package install log to advise you of the date and time it was installed. Perhaps it would be easier if devs were specific about which configuration items have new revisions with the fixes, so test results can be more accurately related to them. Just as a suggestion mate :) Anyway since other updates came along Ive since given this another round of testing. Generally there is improvement but there is a bunch of regressions. I have not concluded my testing but to provide initial problems: 1. The user experience has a serious blocker for DVD titles where the DVD menu sequence has a language selection menu item before the main menu. This means the user gets stuck on that screen with no apparent way to go forward. Later on gstreamer provides a UI with focus on clickable fields but this does not seem to occur before the main menu for language selection screens. This is a major issue for my native Region 4 DVD collection as this region typically has these types of menus in many different titles. 2. Trying another test with a dvd title that doesnt have language selection before the main menu, when I select to play the DVD I am not able to seek at all through the footage. 3. In a similar way when playing back the movie there is no response from Totem when a user selects to go back to the main dvd menu. Have you conducted any unit tests on the SVN version of resindvd? Given resindvd is modular in nature and with what appears to me as a number of regressions in the so called released "bad plugin set" version theres an argument that the SVN version might actually have less harm that the "bad released" version. I dont think this point of view should be dismissed out of hand just because Intrepid is in beta - IMHO this specific situation is a bit unique. I also fully expect my ongoing testing in this area to reveal more problems. -- DVD playback does not work anymore https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/260765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gst-plugins-base0.10 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 260765] Re: DVD playback does not work anymore
Following the updates that came through today by slomo (thanks btw), such as the new gstreamer base revision, I gave another dvd title a test. I tried the R4 title "Reign of Fire" and it failed to playback by presenting an error dialogue about playlist errors not being parsed. I tried again "The Core" and get the same error about parsing playlists. I'd like to briefly comment on testing dvd menus too. No open source project has been licenced by the copyright holders to provide dvd menu playback. What this means is that the hackers who have reverse engineered dvd menu support in open source projects have done so without being issued the specifications. DVDs have a vast range of different functionality that the specifications cover - some of it is not intuitively obvious or trivial. When it comes to testing its important to try many differently authored DVD menus as they typically use different features out of the spec. If a tester reports "it works for me" we should not rush ahead with this - we need to have caution and a wider test coverage to more widely understand the robustness.
Onkar I'm sorry to report problems with all DVDs I tried using your PPA. With the R4 title "The Core" resindvd fails to see user input regarding which language to display at the DVD menu prompt with a list of languages. Since user input is required to progress in the DVD menu sequence no playback occurs. On the R4 title "We Were Soldiers" the DVD starts to playback with the copyright notice but then fails with "an error occured failed to connect to stream : OK". Clearly it is bugged with determing dvd menu sequences correctly. On the R4 title "Ratatouille" the DVD drive seeks, no playback occurs and totem freezes requiring the user to force quit. Its clear to me that the idea of using the released resindvd in the bad gstreamer plugins will result in a poor user experience. Resindvd was put into the bad plugin set for specific reasons and I think an argument could be fairly made that is was not ready to be considered for release into the bad plugins set at all. If Ubuntu will not consider looking at a CVS compile for where resindvd is up to now, then I recommend what I see as the only real choice available : revert back to not using resindvd with dvdnav / dvdread from the setup that Hardy used. The setup from Hardy was not always correct, but atleast most of the time it was able to playback main DVD titles without menus. This sometimes caused problems, such as with the R4 title "Star Wars IV A New Hope" where it would select the wrong dvd stream to playback as the main title in the dvd sequence. This however did not occur very often on the DVDs I tried with Hardy's setup. -- DVD playback does not work anymore https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/260765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gst-plugins-base0.10 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 257818] Re: Totem Fails To Deinterlace
I'd like to share my progress with this. Since upstream seem to be somewhat uncooperative on implementing deinterlacing in Totem Ive been doing tests with gstreamer. I'm pleased to report that deinterlacing functionality is working well. Here's a command line for bottom field first interlaced content: gst-launch filesrc location=/mnt/vault/Film/Tests/aspbff.avi ! decodebin2 ! ffmpegcolorspace ! deinterlace2 tff=2 ! xvimagesink And for top field first content: gst-launch filesrc location=/mnt/vault/Film/Tests/asptff.avi ! decodebin2 ! ffmpegcolorspace ! deinterlace2 ! xvimagesink Note that currently gstreamer cannot auto detect if the content is TFF or BFF and TFF is assumed. [Bug 257519] Re: File Roller With P7zip Broken on Rars
I appreciate that the RARLABS software is closed source, but RARLABS provides the software as a way for users on non windows environments to extract their format. Ubuntu includes other closed source software in the repos such as the Nvidia drivers. Another example is Adobe Flash. The so called "free" unrar library (the RARLABS unrar is also "free" as in cost) that is optionally available in the repos as well is feature limited and not reliable for general use cases in my experience. An example is how it fails to extract multiple volume archives when I tried it. The idea that the required package cannot be included as required for file roller is one which is at odds to other Ubuntu closed source precedents. -- File Roller With P7zip Broken on Rars https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/257519 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 257519] Re: File Roller With P7zip Broken on Rars
We should not be so quick to get rid of bugs without having consideration to a quality user experience. The gnome feature list states that "File-roller (Archive Manager) now uses p7zip to extract archives, so it supports .alz, .zip, .cbr, .cbz archives, .arj, .rar and .iso files". People naturally expect that stated features will actually be included and that they will work without hassles. If the root cause of the bug is that the package p7zip-rar is not present, then the solution should be that this package is changed to require p7zip-rar. What happens now is that rar's under file manager fail mysteriously without any assistance about needing the p7zip-rar package. Im re-opening this to confirmed because its not an invalid bug report. ** Changed in: file-roller (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => Confirmed -- File Roller With P7zip Broken on Rars https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/257519 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 250021] Re: copy as root trashes my install
I'd like to elaborate on how this bug has an inappropriate priority since no one with credentials to change it has actioned my suggestion at raising it. I note that another bug that looks at how Intrepid does not shutdown using the shutdown menu in Gnome (workaround is to log out and then shutdown from GDM) has a priority of high. At best, that bug is a nuisance for user workflow. Here with this bug we have an error that wrecks the system - it nukes the install. The solution requires non intuitive use of the command line. Should this bug pass into production, it could easily lead to Ubuntu users concluding that Ubuntu lacks expected robustness and quality. This bug replicates itself in performing fairly common tasks with file roller. I expect the priority to be critical. If Ubuntu has a policy statement on the assignment of priorities (which I havent found so far) then I will read/review that. -- copy as root trashes my install https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/250021 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 257818] Re: Totem Fails To Deinterlace
Can I please make some comments here: 1. I consider the priority should be high, I could be argued into settling for medium with convincing points. In certain use cases this is a very serious problem. For example, trying to watch interlaced digital TV broadcasts or captures of such footage results in an unwatchable image. As too, trying to play footage show on interlaced cameras. Transcoding for progressive frames is not only a very time consuming idea but also one which may not be feasible in all cases given finite amounts of workstation storage and other reasons. 2. I think the "bug" exists in both gstreamer and totem. Why should totem have a drop down menu setting that does nothing? Isnt that poor UI design to provide apparent functionality to the user which is not actually implemented in the default back end used by Ubuntu? I'm new to Gstreamer but I'm going to take a look at the Gstreamer bug database to see if it needs to be reported upstream as well. -- Totem Fails To Deinterlace https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/257818 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gstreamer0.10 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

What are you doing Pedro? Can I please encourage you to have a more considered approach if you want to fiddle with bugs? This bug is not invalid, and it certainly is not a low priority issue! This is a very serious problem that trashes the system all together. While there is a workaround, that workaround is non intuitive for novice users who in such a case would be forced into an apparent re-install of Ubuntu. This is certainly the sort of user experience that must be avoided. If you have some reason why the bug is invalid you need atleast to put a comment as to why and allow us testers to respond. [Bug 255929] Re: Totem Fails On Multiple Audio and Subtitle Streams
I think my report was pretty descriptive. As I have already said: 1. Im on Intrepid synched as of 08/08/08 2. Im using the default gstreamer backend 3. Totem allows the user to change the preferred audio stream and or the subtitle stream duing playback 4. The bug is easily replicated by doing this, and observing that Totem fails to actually change the stream 5. I have identified a clumsy workaround that involves selecting the new stream, observing it not being enabled, then by pressing the mouse in the seekbar to go back in the stream the new desired streams will eventually come into play. Again, if you dont have sample media that has multiple audio and or multiple subtitle streams I can assist with providing some. ** Changed in: totem (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- Totem Fails On Multiple Audio and Subtitle Streams https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/255929 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 255931] Re: Confusing Media Player Open With
When this bug originally occured, I did not have totem-xine installed. It seems to be unecessary to install a totem gstreamer mime type desktop when Movie Player already has gstreamer installed by default and uses that. The "choice" between Movie Player and Movie Player (gstreamer) is no real choice as both load the gstreamer backend. Perhaps the desktop mime type can be removed to avoid situation all together or similar. ROAF (Ubuntu Dev) on the Ubuntu forum felt it is bug as part of my discussion here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=882453 -- Confusing Media Player Open With https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/255931 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 163660] Re: Color Balance "default settings" on Totem screwed video playback
Confirming this bug still exists in Intrepid as of today's build. Firstly, the Hue setting should be set to zero not halfway on the slider by default. Secondly the other three colour settings always move slightly when the user selects to restore defaults even though the user had not changed these three since last reverting to defaults. I would think this should be a simple thing to fix - has this bug been reported upstream? I note its taking 9 months so far without resolution. -- Color Balance "default settings" on Totem screwed video playback https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/163660 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 255931] [NEW] Confusing Media Player Open With
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem I'm using Totem with the gstreamer backend on Ubuntu intrepid synched to the repos as of today 08/08/08. When I need to associate video footage to open with Media Player by right clicking the file and selecting open with another application, a user is presented with two confusing elements for Movie Player. The first is Movie Player, the second is Movie Player (Gstreamer). This is not only confusing for a user, but it's also unnecessary for the user to make a choice. I need Totem to use the gstreamer back end as without it, it has no demuxers and decoders to play anything. It is also confusing because even when Movie Player is selected instead of the gstreamer variant, Totem's help about shows that gstreamer is in fact being used as the backend anyway. ** Affects: totem (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Confusing Media Player Open With https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/255931 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 255929] [NEW] Totem Fails On Multiple Audio and Subtitle Streams
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem-gstreamer Im using Totem with the gstreamer backend on Ubuntu intrepid synched to the repos as of today 08/08/08. When a user plays some footage with multiple audio streams and / or multiple subtitle streams Totem provides the functionality for the user to change which stream is being played. In both cases, a user trying to change subtitles and / or audio is able to select the new stream but Totem will not effect the change. There is a work around where if the user fiddles with pressing the mouse in a prior section of the playback a few times the new desired streams will eventually come in. Re: [Bug 22930] Re: Newly-sensitive button ignores clicks until cursor re-enters it
While I am new to Ubuntu, I have over a decade of professional experience in IT projects and I am so shocked that someone with an Ubuntu email address would actually make the statement that Sebastien has made I feel compelled to respond with my own points. The importance of producing robust, stable, easy to use software in IT projects is fundamental. Ubuntu talks about the "myth" that it is only a desktop OS - well, what person in their right mind is going to install a distro with the approach that bugs are ok, we'll wait for LTS. Or even someone wanting to use the distro on a business workstation. I respect your right to present your views Sebastien but I also have a right to explain why I fundementally disagree. Canonical should wisen up and understand the millions of complaints MS receives about bugs in their software and the attitude of the general population about wanting reliable software that "just works". How can anyone honestly expect Ubuntu to threaten MS's dominant position when the releases get out the door into production when they shouldnt and too many cowboys are contributing to the project who charge ahead and give a lack of manpower the reason for not sorting out the quality? Its so incredibly reckless and frivilous. Some of the bugs are downright dangerous too. Like the GUI bugs with user and group management - how any software could have been released with that issue confounds me when I see so many talented people helping on this project. Gutsy is not looking any better - in fact many of the new features have presented me with new bugs in the many tests Ive done and the release date for that looms ever closer. Gutsy is unusable for the LiveCD and I have continue to have numerous bugs making the alternate install painful. New features should indeed be stopped and the build brought back to basics in a major bug fix - forget about a "bug day" and "bug hugs", Ubuntu needs a bug fix release. Otherwise Canonical is going to continue to frustrate users coming over from Windows with silly bugs like the one in this thread, companies wont be using it due to serious bugs like the problems with GUI user/group management and the rest of the Linux community will increasingly regard Ubuntu as a distro for cowboys that moves too quickly and doesnt bother with due diligence in quality assurance. -- Newly-sensitive button ignores clicks until cursor re-enters it https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/22930 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 22930] Re: Newly-sensitive button ignores clicks until cursor re-enters it
Looks as though this bug has been around since 2001. Sadly it retains an upstream priority of normal which ignores the very serious impact it has on Ubuntu first impressions and greatly highlights one of the problems with FOSS. Given what has been a very poor track record on this bug why doesnt Canonical do a workaround for this bug so the installer atleast is not effected. I noticed the following in the upstream bug discussion: "For what it's worth, developers can work around this bug by simply hiding/showing the button after they make the button sensitive again. This will too fast for the user to see, and it will allow them to click the button without moving their mouse from the button." -- Newly-sensitive button ignores clicks until cursor re-enters it https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/22930 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
